I *hate* Shaw's - like abhor it. I called today to see if the bakery had something, so went to the bakery phone. When no one answered, the call went to the customer service desk. LOL - "customer service." Shyla told me "they went home... they have personal lives and do not need to be here all day.... It is out of our control." Um - no. The prices are competitive. As part of Star Market, this makes sense. I think the Star market chain is the most reasonable.. Shaw's produce is fresh with local and organic options. It looks like they are right off the vine. I like their selection of meats. I usually look for chicken liver. They are my favorite. read more

I stopped at this Shaw's to get some shelf stable products that I needed for the condo. This store is not as modern nor large as other ones in the area, but it does have an Osco pharmacy for those needing a prescription filled. Their selection of shelf stable milks in TetraPak containers was good and varied. I was able to get the one that I wanted. I like these containers so I don't have to worry about expiration dates that are not far out....these high barrier containers can hold the product (unopened) for over a year...when you are ready to open it, you still have to use it within a few weeks, but it gives people the advantage of having something in the pantry for use anytime. This is the only Shaws I have been to and the current Manager has requested for the employees not to make Salt n Vinegar chicken wings. The people at the counter (Maria) was of great service and fully understood what wings I was talking about. It a very clean store I would have rated higher but I need for this franchise to address this matter. read more

The store is filthy often times with often foods that expired. They also charge for paper bags, at 10 cents each, which are made so cheaply, that the handles rip apart. You'll have to double bag it, or better off, or buy a steady bag for $1.25each, if you forgot to brig one much more than Stop & Shop and others. Shop else, many others in the Waltham area. read more

Bit of a mixed bag here - some of the seafood looked not so fresh, and there needs to be more organic and cheaper leafy green produce. (This critique applies to a wide variety of Star Markets / Shaws in the area). The dairy section is plentiful, and features a number of different products of wide variety. Staff helpful, but the store needs to employ more of them. Not so crowded a store, so appropriate for pandemic shopping. read more

I've been shopping here for years. Its not the fanciest place in the area, but its been fine for what it is. I'm usually there before 8:00 am and its not crowded at all. However, today, no normal checkout lanes were open. I had a full cart and was told that since its before 8:00 am, I'd need to use the self-scan. While it has everything you need, this place is kind of a hole by modern grocery store standards. Can we get the self checkouts back please? I don't want to spend twice the time waiting in lines here to buy two items when the Stop & Shop on the next block has self checkout. Granted the old machines were total garbage and needed employee assistance every 10 seconds. And can you turn off the non-stop CDC warnings on the loud speakers? Play some elevator music like a normal store. I don't need to feel like I'm in a zombie apocalypse while I'm grocery shopping. And I don't need to be told to wash my hands by the damn grocery store. Slowest moving lines I've ever experienced at a Shaws. It was like pulling teeth to buy cigarettes here with my lunch. Unpleasant reception from key carrying employee who finally rang me up without apologies for delay. It's also not the cleanest Shaw's location I've ever been to. read more

This Shaw's reminds me of the old Meadow Glenn Mall in Medford. But instead of it getting replaced by a giant Wegmans, it will probably stay there. First off, it is depressing. I don't usually feel moods in stores, but the second I walked into this store I wanted to get out before I was afraid Lady Death was going to steal my soul. The funny thing is that is a pretty updated store, it just looks run down. I don't know, you really have to be there to see it I guess. I wouldn't say the staff are rude, but they just look miserable all the time. I only buy very few things from this location. ALWAYS check your expiration date. The staff I feel never ever restock items because there will be tons of expired items left on the shelves. Even small stuff. I've gotten candy from here that has been expired. Retrieving fruit is a hit or miss. I once tried to buy a specific type of apple and literally every single apple was majorly bruised. Really check the item too. Again, most of the veggies are soggy and bruised in some way. Fish and meat are also a big no no. I would never trust any meat or fish from this location. Cleanliness of the location would probably be a 2.5/10. Doesn't really matter what time of the day it is, it is always a mess. Lines are sloowww. Self checkout is almost always out of order. The slowness mainly comes from the staff. Like I said, everyone moves like they are in predatory or something. Why do I come here? They sell a particular soda that I drink. It is only available exclusively at Shaw's. It gets an extra star for that. read more

How do they stay open? Not enough cashiers so slow lines. Most times I go through self serve but with 12 packs of soda. Do too many of them and help is needed, but they are so short staffed so you wait or leave. This is the closest store to me, but I rarely go because of price, and service. Market Basket is often worth the drive. read more

While most supermarkets are nothing to write home about, I have to say this branch of Shaw's deserves a special mention. Why? Well, first of all, they carry a whole aisle of imported goodies such as McVitie's digestive biscuits, Aero bars, and Nestle Lion bars from the UK! I know there were a few other countries represented in this international foods aisle, but I just zone in on my favorites. I often find specialty products here that I don't see at other supermarkets, and they have a nice "natural foods" section too. Another plus is the baking aisle, which carries a wide variety of sprinkles, icings, cupcake liners, etc. which is sometimes frustratingly hard to find at other supermarkets. They even have parchment paper! The entire store is pristinely clean and I usually do not have to wait more than 5 minutes for a register to check out. It's a little weird that the store is so empty, but it does make grocery shopping a lot easier when you don't have to dodge carts and children. read more

Given the choice between Hannafords on Main Street, Stop and Shop on River Street, and Shaw's on River Street. I will choose Shaw's Every time. All three are a little on the run down side, and I wouldn't want to by fish at any of these stores. But Shaw's has more of the products I love. Their yogurt selection, ethnic foods section, and boxed/canned foods are all great. They have more of the hard to find stuff. The one big plus is the bakery. This Shaw's kinda grosses me out. The few times I've been there I've never had a good experience with their produce department (okay maybe once I got a good deal on some yummy grapes). It's dingy and small and a bit depressing actually. Full disclosure - I grew up in Newton and when I was a kid this used to be Ames department store, which I remember as a K-Mart type deal. It hasn't lost that feel... Do with it what you will, but you're better off going to the Stop & Shop down the street. read more

As far as Shaw's go, this store is not bad. The produce is usually of decent enough qualities, though on some days it can be bad. The seafood counter is great. Its a clean store with a good selection overall. However, they just took away self-check out! This is why they are getting two stars. I hate going through a cashier and ending up with one item in each doubled plastic bag, even though I bring in my own bags but they never load them up. Bring back self-check out and give people the option, or at the minimum teach your staff to bag groceries. read more

This grocery store will meet all your standard foodstuff needs, but not with much pizzazz or enthusiasm. They're fully stocked with everything you may need, and the selection of fresh fruits and vegetables is typically adequate. The customer service is a bit under par, even for grocery store levels. Many of the employees are young and (understandably) don't seem thrilled about their job, so smiling service is hard to come by. Prices are moderate, although a shrewd shopper can make use of their frequent sales on various items to stretch their dollar further here. read more

I only went here because I was catching a ride with friends. I've always had good luck with Shaw's in the past (always glimmering, clean, well-stocked, etc) . . . . but this one just sank that ray of sunshine. *Clean facilities, and relatively well-stocked. Prices are a bit higher than Hanaford (which is where I usually grab my groc). *Standards for product = down the toilet! Every bell pepper and onion I grabbed to bag were wrinkling with age, bruised,damaged, or rotting. *Not a single employee said "hello" or offered assistance with finding products. Apparently there is a slack dress code at this location...(unprofessional). *At the check out, the employee accidentally hit "cash" instead of "debit" and it launched this HUGE ordeal as to how to clear it. We ended up just using the ATM and paying cash - we actually got ATTITUDE from the supervisor who was called over to help! Meanwhile, the cashier and the bagger were chatting back and forth about trivial teenage matters in inappropriate speech. Truly the most ghetto grocery experience I have lived through to date. Will only return if absolutely desperate. read more

Sure, I almost got attacked by a bunch of Canadian geese in your parking lot one spring morning, but I only have beautiful memories of you. I loved that I could always rely on you to stock Lettuce Leaf, and that at any random day of the week other than Sunday afternoons, you were nice and empty so I could roam around at my leisure without feeling stressed. I loved your Clearance section in the corner where I could find 10 year old Pureology shampoos for only $5! (Yeah, I'm not ashamed that I used 10 year old shampoo) I loved that your freezer section was never too cold and your check out counters were never too long. Over the years this Shaw's has managed to go completely down hill. Management has changed over many times and it just keeps getting worse and worse. The overall surface and attitude of the store is reflected on the shelves as well as in the employees. Management needs to seriously start focusing on their employees and the quality of products on the shelves. It's gotten to the point that I'll go out of my way to go to the Auburndale store instead of this one even though this is closer to me. read more

I had always gone to Shaw's while living in Brighton, but now that I live in Waltham I almost exclusively do all my grocery shopping at Hannaford's. I only stop by Shaw's for one thing - Dietz & Watson deli meat. Sure it's a little pricey, but it tastes so much better than the slimy cheaper deli meat Hannaford sells. The one other benefit to Shaw's is the self checkout lanes, which can really come in handy if you are only buying deli meat and don't want to wait in longer lines. Items that are on sale weekly at Shaw's are sometimes a good deal, but in general almost every single other product from produce to milk to ice cream is cheaper at Hannafords. read more

Pros: This shaws has good hours, and good staff, and is in a good location. Since the chain was purchased by new owners summer 2013, they no longer require a store card, and the prices have become more competitive. Cons: if you are looking for particular products or options for produce it does not have that much. They only have maybe 2 options for most brands of dry goods, and then only 1-2 options for most produce, which is fine, but there is a Hannaford in Waltham with more competitive pricing and better bakery, meat, produce and fish, and then there is a larger Shaws on River St. in Waltham which has much more variety and is less crowded. This is a decent neighborhood supermarket, but you are better off going to others if you have a big shopping trip or are looking for specifics. read more

I come in this store a lot. It is like a soap opera. I have been in here when customers were fighting over the last My Mixx item on the shelf, a blond employee threatening to kill someone, and some African American guy in deli who is always making fun of people. Last night I came in and there was one girl with glasses working check out. The line was halfway down the store. She had her one register on, and self scan was going off. The girl had to keep jumping from the register to the self scans and keep it all together up there while bagging also. She kept calling for help but no one showed up. There was a giant flood in the back of the store by the cold items. I would have walked out if I was the cashier. Looks like paying the 12.00 minimum wage really kills this store, now they have someone doing all the jobs up there instead of one. Can they not hire more people? read more

This store has become quite relaxed in their practices. Their employees consistently pull their masks down while preparing deli food, stocking shelves and bagging groceries. Most customers adhere to the rules so it would be nice if the employees did as well. They also clean the registers a lot less than they did a few months ago and they are often filthy. And still finding many expired items on the shelves. read more

I'm a fan of the seafood counter at this Star Market. It has always been fresh and if you buy what is on special it can be a good deal. Recently we bought a few lobsters had them steam them up for us and had a special meal with the family for under 25 bucks with a cheap bottle of wine. Always ask the person at the counter what they recommend/ what is fresh and you are set. The store recently is better organized and cleaner that it used to be. The produce section can sometimes be a bit pricey though. read more

In the heart of (arguably) the most sketchy part of Waltham, there is a wonderful Shaws supermarket. It is cheap. It is clean. They sell Maltesers. Need I say more? It's cheaper than Hannaford, although I feel like the same items are always on sale ($1 shaws toaster pastries anyone?). The international section is the best part, lots of South American and UK goods. Never actually purchased produce here, but it's never looked too disgusting. Just be careful of the typical Waltham weirdos, one guy was wheeling himself around on an electric wheelchair making faces at people. read more

For some reason, this location is always busy at 7:30 AM. Maybe it's because of the convenient location on the way to work.. people stop in. When I come at that time on my way into work, it's usually the same staff. A lot of them are stocking up the shelves and are really friendly. Every single person greeted me. They are awesome there. The only thing I don't like is how they have a completely separate Entrance and Exit. read more

A lovely grocery -- very clean and spacious, airy feel, good selection (even for a vegan!) , pleasant and friendly checkout and stock people -- and (best of all, in my book) a recent new manager who has eliminated the loudly yammering "check-out TV" which used to compete with the piped in screechy diva pop music to drive the even minimally noise-sensitive customer bonkers. There were times I could be found muttering to myself in the aisle, poised to flee at the awfulness and volume of the music. And now ? Mozart. Bach. Brandenburgs !! Awesome. AWESOME !!! read more

The aisles are extremely tight. It was difficult for two carts to go side by side down the aisle without slightly hitting the other person. I was in the aisle when looking at different drinks, and I move several times so I just got mad and put my cart in the main aisle. During check out, the cashier asked if I wanted things in a bag. I told him no, just give me bags since i need to put in certain bags. He put everything to the side and looked at me funny what i asked for three plastic bags. I ended up getting it myself since he started the next customer already. read more

I am giving a 2 stars because 2 stars says "Meh, I've experienced better" and that is how I feel about this Shaws. Don't get me wrong, it is perfectly fine for what it is, but there are some things left to be desired: Pros: Good hours - they are open till midnight most nights. Organic Produce - they have it and stock it if you are into it Shelves are pretty regularly stocked Customer service is pretty decent, cashiers are pretty friendly. Cons: Probably the most expensive grocery store around. It is close and convenient to me, but they have items that are 10-25% less at other places, this is particularly true in the "natural foods" section, but across the board I find it more expensive to shop here. No self check out - They used to have it, but took it away. Now always waiting in line... and that leads us to: The promise of "No more than 3 in a line at a time" - Again, they took out self check out and put up big signs promising that no more than 3 people in a line at a time, they regularly break that promise. I think the last time I was in the took the sign down, but either way, sometimes you have to wait to check out. All that said, I go there all time, and don't have any major issues with the way the store is run, it just feels expensive read more
