A true sanctuary for both vegans and celiacs! We stopped at this delicious cafe on our way to New Haven from the airport. So happy we discovered this amazing cafe. I'm a celiac and vegan, it's incredible to be able to choose from everything on the menu. We happily drove 60 miles a day to eat there and we will be back anytime we're in Connecticut! A customer I ran into drives from out of state for their food. The food is always fresh, made to order and Delicious! If you require organic, vegan, gf they are the destination. We had spectacular service from Christine and the rest of the staff. We had almost everything on the menu, fluffy pancakes, wraps, bowls and pizza. We also took food/dessert to go for later. Everything is vegan and gluten-free. Some are nut and soy free. Had the roasted veggie pizza with two different cheeses. My wife had the Mexican bowl. Both loaded with flavor and lots of fresh veggies and fruits. Every bite was a little taste of heaven and very filling. Got baked goods. I'll try later. Staff is very friendly and enthusiastic. So I will provide a review as a whole life Meat-Asaurus and as a new 4 month Vegan. I went to Shayna B's after it moved and expanded its offerings in Westbrook. My first time, as a Meat-Asaurus, I ordered the breakfast sandwich - which over the years has been my addiction-go-to item. When I finished I thanked cook and server Susan for having an egg sandwich on the menu "for us meat eaters." I will always remember her smile and her answer "there were no eggs in the sandwich - we are a completely vegan restaurant, but glad you liked it!" Oh and the bagel was gluten free... Whether you are a meater eater or vegan, need gluten-free or have a food allergy Owner Christine Reed has provided the shoreline with a vegan/gluten free bakery and cafe eatery oasis. While the foods-to-go, smoothies, soups, nachos, personal pizzas, sandwiches, wraps, and specials would be enough - there is the 20-30 foot long glassed bakery case filled with an assortment of yummy delights. The food is fresh, tasty, the portions are perfect and the soups are out of this world. The vegan lasagna in the to-go case was a delicious next day lunch at work. Preordering from the bakery is important around the holidays - we just put Christine's creations out for family/friends and don't even bother saying they are vegan anymore! The cafe is large and is defined by 1. the "front area" with food ordering and baked goods, an assortment of local vendor's items for sale, and comfortable metal seating for eating - on weekends there is usually a music group (1-3 persons) playing for a few hours; 2. the back area provides additional space to eat on more ornate wooden/shore inspired tables and seats, and wall art from children who have come to eat over the year. Stopped in for some vegan treats. There was a large selection to choose from with some more being made while I was there. I asked about the chocolate ones being available but didn't have time to wait until they were ready. They offered to go in the back and whip up some chocolate ganache to finish one for me but I didn't want to interrupt their process. The cafe is casual and reminds me of an old deli or country store. Love that everything here is gluten free and vegan! The cinnamon roll and bagels are a true test of gluten-free baked goods and they nailed it! I really wish I had a toaster though to heat up my cinnamon roll. I ended up toasting my bagel a few days later and it performed exceptionally. The chai spice cupcake was also really good. I am so in love with the food that I kind of want to make another trip out there just to stop by and pickup some goods! read more

In Westbrook, I stopped by Shayna B's By The Sea for some lunch. First, Westbrook is a beach town, so anywhere in Westbrook is by the sea. However the location of this restaurant isn't exactly on the beach, but it is close. It is a very cute name nonetheless. Shayna B's By The Sea is a vegan and gluten free restaurant. When I walked inside, I was the only one there, they have a lot to choose from. They have salads, pizzas, smoothies, soups, wraps, etc. I went with the Nourish Bowl. This came with quinoa, roasted mushrooms, cauliflower, broccoli, avocado, sweet potato, pineapple, hemp seeds, and topped with maple dressing! I sat down at one of their cute hand made tables, where kids' artwork is displayed on the walls. My food was brought out to me around 10 minutes later. This was delicious, fresh, full of nutrients and lots of greens. The roasted flavor of the mushrooms with the sweetness of the pineapple, not what typically goes together, but it worked. It seemed a bit too big at first, but I ate it all on my own. I was stuffed. There are so many tasty sweet things at Shayna B, they were making cookies while I was there. I have been hearing about Shayna's since long time. Frankly, I was a bit skeptical to go here, as I have had terrible experiences with vegan/vegetarian places charging such exorbitant prices for mediocre food, some times I prefer omni places with options for everyone. But Shayna's is different in so many levels. For one, they are completely gluten free. Their menu is pretty extensive and really unique. More importantly, I loved the food. It's been a couple of months since I went there (I know I should take another trip soon, but it's a bit of a trip for me). But now that I am writing the review, the flavor of their food comes to my mind as fresh as back then. I tried nachos, vegan wrap, Hawaiian pizza and cup cakes. Cup cakes were solid 5/5 as to me, gluten free cakes taste better than the regular flour cakes Pizza - 5/5 - as I did a take out, by the time I got home the crust was a bit hard, but the buffalo cauliflower, the sauce and the flavor were all spot on. Wrap and nachos - 4.75/5 - These were pretty good. They have a cute dining area inside with limited tables where you can eat. The employees were super friendly. I have been an acolyte of Shayna B since its vagabond origin in meals-to-go and baked goods delivered to Fiddleheads Food Coop, Willimantic Food Coop, and Stonington's year-round farmers market. When it made a home in a sit-down café in Old Saybrook, I rejoiced. Even better, in 2021 it moved into larger quarters with a veranda that offers sheltered outdoor dining overlooking a wetlands. Picnic time! I had long relished those wholesome and flavorful grab-and-go entrées. While it still sells readymade entrées to-go, now it serves more selections that are not easily transportable. The soups are always excellent and underpriced. Smoothies and fresh juices are now served. No mock meats here, fake foods that make a mockery of veganism. Among the entrées, Shayna B excels in its salad bowls and pizzas. I don't give a hoot about gluten, and find most gluten-free bakery items bland and chalky, yet even its brown-rice-flour pizza crust tastes good. I mourn the recent deletion from its menu of its outstanding Mac n' Cheeze. (Life is tough!) As a replacement, I lust for the Hawaiian Pizza, made not with highly acidic tomato sauce, but with freshly baked cherry tomatoes among its luscious veggie toppings. Best of all is its sunflower-seed cheeze that excels any fake cheese in the markets. But recently I have succumbed to a new object of my desire, the Nourish Bowl, comprised of roasted vegetables. Almost all dietary regimens and allergies and snobberies can be accommodated here. My food sensitivity is to all alliums (garlic, onions, et al), causing me indigestion, which in turn causes, oh never mind. I'm thankful that in most dishes except the soups the alliums can be omitted. If you abide by yogic dietary doctrines, you'll be thankful too. Most so-called natural foods restaurant desserts are made of white flour and white sugar. Such white plagues belong to the dustbin of nutrition. But even as a nutritional elitist, I do indulge in maple syrup or coconut sugar. At Shayna's, one daily dessert is sweetened only with those, so worthy of indulgence. Sweet! Note that its small outdoor signage is inconspicuous, so the café is easy to pass by. It shares its parking lot with a boat showroom, so look for drydocked dreamboats. read more

I'm thrilled that you exist! The nachos were fantastic. We'd had the buffalo tofu wrap in the past and remembered it fondly, but on this visit it seemed like the dressing was more sour, and there wasn't much tofu in it. It was lovely how it comes with sides, particularly the fresh pineapple. The funfetti cupcake was dry. The staff is lovely, but the space did not feel very clean. We had to wipe crumbs from a previous diner off of our own table. Having live music is a nice idea, but I wonder if maybe they could be set up in the room away from the counter instead of right in the middle of everything. read more

Stopped at Shayna B's for gluten free / dairy free bakery items on Sunday 8/25/24. First time at Shayna B's. We purchased 5 cupcakes that look like the old hostess cupcake. Guy at the register rang them out for $50!! Then realized he overcharged and gave the proper refund back in cash. 5 cupcakes for $35. The cupcakes seemed a day or 2 old and were somewhat dry and not worth the calories or money. I don't mind the high cost of the item(s) if they are good. If in the area go to Simply Delicious. The devil cupcake was SO dry. The frosting had some redeeming qualities to it. The vegan cream cheese was a glob of dingy tofu? Not at all good. The bagel was incredibly chewy and lacked flavor. The pancakes were rubbery and the best part of them was the syrup. The blueberry oat bar was a pile of mush. The blueberry's were good but the attempt at the oat bar was severely lacking. We tried a number of items and can honestly say nothing was delicious. Not worth the money. We went and got something from Ed's place down the road. Was looking for a vegan lunch spot along our route home on i95, and this place fit the bill. Glad we stopped here! One of the best vegan meals we've had out in a while. We both started with soup. He got the Moroccan lentil on the menu and I got the soup of the day, an Italian wedding soup with white beans. Both were hearty and delicious. For my main, I got the buffalo cauliflower wrap which was spicy and creamy and crunchy - phenomenal. Bread and butter pickles, red cabbage slaw, and fruit on the side were a nice extra touch. My husband got the Nourish bowl with crispy beets, mushrooms, quinoa, and other veggies plus a maple tahini dressing that was so good. Two thumbs up! The food is remarkable. The breakfast platter was well balanced and absolutely delicious with no seasoning added whatsoever! My girlfriend had the buffalo cauliflower wrap and it was a large portion. We failed to tell them that she was allergic to avocado and there was avocado on it. Which was absolutely on us. They took it off the bill which was above and beyond. Actually it was a little hard to find...first The Garmin took us to their old location, then we reconfigured the directions to the newer location and drove past it twice, but I must say it was worth our perseverance. The set up of this cafe is nice once inside but you could easily drive by it without noticing it. The menu is interesting and we ordered the California Wrap, the Mexican Bowl and the hostess cupcake, total Cost $39.50. The prices are high but you generally find that with vegan restaurants. The portion are small to medium in size. My kids are vegan and like G-Zen in Branford and Three Girls Vegan Creamery in Guilford and they rated Shayna's just below those two but still very good. And their preference doesn't mean it is below those two... others might think otherwise. The only disappointment was the cupcake which was dry but the Wrap was a 5 out of 5 and the bowl a 4 out of 5. read more

The whole family loves this place. Everyone can eat there safely with their food allergies and sensitivities. Everything in the pastry case is gorgeous, the meals are generous and always delicious, lots of different smoothie and beverage varieties. We all split a number of desserts together, all winners, moist and delicious. We had vegan waffles with strawberries and cream on one visit, which was a huge hit. Bowls and wraps were delicious with generous sizes. My daughter takes home dinners from their take-out case to heat up during the week. Everyone there is friendly, accommodating and inviting. Eat in or take-out, lots of variety, fresh ingredients, plenty of table choices for families, and other local artisan goods for sale. Chef even comes out to check how you like your meal. Ladies and gentlemen, this visit was a long time in the making. I first heard of Shayna B's before they officially opened last year. It's been there, never leaving the back of my mind. I don't make it out to Old Saybrook often, but many times I thought about driving out there just to hit up Shayna B's. But I never went. I had to visit AAA this morning and I knew Shayna's wasn't too far away, so I Googled the route last night. The route was 0.3 miles. I arrived as they were opening this morning, and I was possibly their first customer of the day. I have several friends who go to Shayna B's, so I've seen pictures, but nothing could prepare me for what I found inside. I had no idea this place was practically a straight up full-scale bakery! Whaaaaaaaat? Sensory overload as I looked around at all the goodies. Breakfast was the first thing on my mind, so I ordered the pesto pizza from their lunch menu. I read a bit in the Tao Te Ching while waiting (which seemed appropriate) and then demolished the pizza. Delicious! Wow! One of the best pizzas I've had in Connecticut. After the pizza I was still hungry so I ordered the mac & cheese, which came with a small yummy salad. After I finished eating it was time to load up an entire box filled with desserts, which I double checked to make sure nothing contained honey. The box of desserts ended up serving as my lunch and dinner for the day. The two huge cupcakes are all that remain as of this writing and I am doubtful they will last the evening. I've never been in a vegan bakery before...I guess I went a little overboard. I took 11 bakery items to go with me and the first 9 of them were absolutely exquisite. I definitely will be driving to Old Saybrook again just to go to Shayna B's. Their bakery is worth it and the food was great too! I had a wonderful first visit. The worst thing about my visit was that I forgot to get one of each type of muffin to go. It makes me want to cry. I'll be back for them. read more

I have been to Shayna B's many many times over the years and have always been satisfied. I went to one of the dinners this past week and was overwhelmed by the presentation and quality of the food. The staff was exceptional and the ambiance was very lovely. I am not a vegan or do I need gluten free food, but I will say, if I didn't live so far away I would be there more often. We discovered this gem accidentally. Talk about awesome! Allow me to explain. Some people in our group have deep roots in CA. All of us have lived there at one time or another so we speak with knowledge. If you know vegan, gluten free, healthy options packed with flavor, artfully plated, then you understand the CA foodie scene. We were all a bit hesitant to order anything at Shayna B's since some well publicized vegan places locally and in New Haven left us shaking our heads in dismay. Those places need help. Shayna's is nothing like "those" places. It could EASILY transport itself to CA and command a crowd where veganism is top notch . Yes, Shayna B's is THAT GOOD. We basically ordered the menu. Cashew nachos, spinach pesto pizza, mushroom pizza, Mexican bowl, 4 veggie bean burgers, a quesadilla and their signature Hostess cupcake. All of us can cook so none of us are ever " fooled". Two of us can honestly bake some dreamy desserts. We all, without hesitation, gave Shayna B's 2 thumbs up and we are decidedly not easy to please, if you haven't figured that out yet.
