Great addition to South Grand! I went for lunch on grand opening day. The staff were friendly, the food was delicious, and they've done a lot with the look of the space, with shiny copper tables and low seats with woven covers. I love Turkish food, so I'd been looking forward to this place ever since I heard it was coming, and I wasn't disappointed. We ordered the turkish kibeh for appetizer, the combo for 4 (meat), and the kutafa and kadaifa, everything was GREAT. Our family loves authentic food, especially middle eastern flavors, this was amazing. Very good, and the service was very nice too. Our waiter fawzi was very helpful and kind, spoke french! We stopped in for lunch and ordered quite a variety of the dishes offered. We enjoyed every single one though the lamb dish was a personal favorite. I enjoyed the copper dinnerware as well as the copper tables. The soup was particularly good as well. We struggled to save room for dessert and the three of us were successful. Walk into Sheesh and you're greeted with a lot of copper, it's beautiful. Copper table tops, copper plates, copper cups, copper serving platters, copper decorations. Don't go here if you're allergic to copper! The decor leans toward being overwrought, but it works. Our servers were attentive, but not overly so. They made me and my party feel special during dinner, and isn't that really what you want from a restaurant experience (besides good food)?!!! Speaking of food - They get an A for good food. We got a lamb kebab and chicken biryani pus baba ganoush for appetizer and their rice pudding and turkish coffee for desert. For me, the star is of the night was the biryani. For those who don't know (I didn't know before getting it myself!) chicken biryani is a rice dish with chicken pieces mixed in. The rice is special because it's spiced and mixed with other delightful ingredients (like shaved carrot and raisins) which provide complexity of flavor and texture. It's also NOT spicy, just in case you were worried. Only reason why not 5 stars is the price. A little more than I was hoping for if buying one entree for myself. That being said, the portions are on the larger side and the prices become very reasonable if you're going to share a couple of entrees between a few people. read more

I met a friend for dinner here a couple of nights ago. As soon as we made our plans, I started fantasizing about my visits to Turkey in recent years--needless to say, this induced some serious cravings! I walked in and immediately liked what I saw and felt, with the music and copper décor creating an appropriate atmosphere. Things sort of went a bit downhill from there. First, even though the restaurant wasn't very busy, we sat with an empty water jug on our table for at least 10 minutes before anyone even greeted us or gave us menus. Second, none of the fish dishes on the menu were actually available, so no go on the fish sandwich I tried to order. Third, my Alinazik Kebab was underwhelming. The flavors of the lamb and eggplant puree were spot on--nice smokiness on the eggplant and tomato--but the meat was dry and significantly smaller in portion than some of the pictures in other reviews represent, and the eggplant puree was really sparse. I was really jealous of my friend's biriyani at that point. The bread was fine, but not as supple and fresh as I expected, although it did save me from leaving hungry. Even though I was disappointed in my experience, I probably would go back for dessert and apple tea, or maybe for lunch, when the prices are better. read more

After a 3 year military tour in Turkey back in the day (the 1980's) I found I was hooked on Turkish food and so have spent the last several decades trying to find good, authentic Turkish cuisine in every large city I visit. Some restaurants come closer than others, and some are more of a Greek/Turkish fusion than anything else. Then came SHEESH! Step in the door and understand from your first smell of the food cooking to the optical overload of authentic Turkish decor and the sounds of traditional Turkish music, you are in for THE finest Turkish dining experience to be had in the St. Louis area for sure, and feast for your senses as well. The menu is limited, but not restrictively so. There are dozens of ways to do kebabs, and it's obvious that Sheesh's chef has mastered the art. But I had the Moussaka on flat bread (ekmek)... a messy and extremely tasty deliight, while my friends opted for the Sheesg Tawook (Chicken kebabs) and the massively filling Lamb Biriyani, and even after our appetizers of Sarma (stuffed grape leaves), Cheese Sigara Borek (like a GOOD Taquito) and Labna, a thick yogurt dip, we all made a valiant effort to eat it all... we left carrying full to-go boxes. Food... 5 stars Ambiance... 5 stars Authenticity... 5 stars Service... 5 stars (a bit slow, but that allows plenty of time to be social and enjoy this experience.) This wonderful slice of Turkish culture has become a must do on all future trips to St. Louis. The seating was a bit uncomfortable. There are many other Mediterranean restaurants all over St. Louis that are much better. It wasn't the worst but far from the best. I have been here twice, and both were excellent. I do find the prices to be a bit high. I really enjoy the decor and copper tables/utensils, as this adds a wonderful authentic ambiance. I was expecting weird food with eyeballs floating in soup or something. But, it was great! So tasty! Great staff! We didn't know you needed reservations but they seated us immediately without giving us a hard time. The apple tea is a must try! I actually found it at Jays after we left so we can have it all of the time. The bronze tableware is cool and the funny suits the staff wears is adorbs. The food is flavorful and delicious. I just ate lunch here and must say, they have the best tahini sauce I have had. Speaking of sauces, their cacik (yogurt w/ cucumber and mint) is INSANELY good. I want to be drowned in this sauce. The people working there were very nice (I thought the dress of the guy who waited on us was a bit over the top, but to each his own) and the atmosphere was very pleasant. I wanted to love this restaurant!!!! Everything was so on point. The decor, presentation, music...it was all great!!! Then the food came, and...sigh....it seemed sloppy. It seemed that corners were cut to save money. The staff is extremely friendly, but seemed overwhelmed at every turn. They don't serve alcohol, and that's fine. The food here was pretty good. Although the service wasn't the best and they charged us for tip on only 3 trips to our table. 1: To bring us the food 2: To check if everything is okay. And 3: To ask us if we wanted any coffee or dessert at the end. Also the prices were pretty high we ordered I believe it was called Prizola kabab for 19.99$ and in the end it was only two Kababs and just a little bit of Baba G. On the bottom. We brought our 21 year old daughter here for dinner. The food was very good, lots of flavor but nothing overwhelming. We had 2 appetizers, one with cheese and spinach in a flaky phyllo type dough and another one with meat and walnuts in a breading. Both were really good. I had the mixed doner plate which had strips of beef and chicken, french fries, and pickled vegetables. The seasoning on the meat was wonderful. It was very tender. My husband had the beef doner plate and enjoyed his as well. My daughter had the lamb biryana. She said the lamb was tender and seasoned just right. The best part of my meal was the appetizer. We ordered some sort of appetizer sampler, and the baba ganoush was simply amazing. However the lamb shank that I had for my entree left a something to be desired; it was a little on the small side and could have used some salt (no salt to be seen on any of the tables). Also they don't have their liquor license and the beverage options are somewhat limited. The waitstaff seemed nice enough though. They all wore fezzes. I'm a big fan of the fez. Amazing! We had a combo dip appetizer, but the hummus was the star. Fresh delicious hummus, we would highly recommend trying it. My husband had the lamb Ishtar (sp?) (the first entree on the menu). The tomato sauce combined with the fresh yogurt on the side was so good. I had the pistachio lamb kabob, which was also delicious. Everything was light and fresh. It was a great option for healthy food while eating out (lots of veggies, fresh herbs, light dishes rather than fried foods). We will definitely be back! read more
