I live in Hinesburg, and regularly shop here, but when I'm working in Shelburne I will go to the Shelburne Market on my way home on occasion. While the store has a great selection of grocery items, produce, local cheeses, meats & a deli. I am continually confronted by the worst in customer service, and just plan rudeness. I would say the meat dept. is the worst! The two men I regularly encounter are curt, and always annoyed by any question I might have re: availability of something i don't see in the case, or some other benign inquiry. The other day the younger of the two was making some adjustments with shelving in the cold meat case, to the right of the small opening where one can ask a question or order something. He was iritated even before I inquired about a date on defrosted shrimp- Frankly he was really annoyed with just being interrupted- saying "Oh shit" To Me. What followed was really unpleasant as he rushed away from his case to where i was, with an response I can't even recall-given his behavior. While I cannot be any more specific about other experiences in this store, I will say it is not a welcoming experience-I never feel good while there, or when I leave-no interaction that leaves me feeling positive with shopping there. The deli staff at the shelburne market could use some customer service support. I have been here twice. Both times I lingered by the counter looking at food to order and not a word from any of the FOUR young adults behind the counter. I left and came back a few minutes later (assuming they were busy) but again was ignored. No eye contact. No acknowledgment of my presence whatsoever. This time three people were working behind the counter and not one of them even appeared to notice. This is the second experience of this nature at this particular establishment At the deli counter. I should not have to holler out to staff behind the counter to be acknowledged and waited on. Unfortunately this business lost my business today and I won't be back. Never would i have thought how crappy it is to shop here. Refrigerator food shelves leaking or not working at all. Always thought i could get anyyhing this am had 12 items on my list today i came home with 5. If jericho market was close i would go there, that store is well stocked and clean and everything is in working order. I live around an hour away but still go here to find products I cannot find elsewhere. I can get Maltex hot cereal and now they have coffee roasted in Charlotte that is certified BIRD FRIENDLY! Many other items but those are special. read more

So overpriced! I got a few things and prices were not marked. It cost me three times the amount I would pay for the same items at my local market in Washington, DC. There are not many choices to buy groceries in the town of Shelburne so shop in a bigger town. read more

Let me tell you what I like. Good assortment of all Vermont has to offer from spirts to quality produce. Nice deli / salad bar. Very clean too. Now what they don't have. Competitive pricing, friendly helpful staff. Not all staff is stuffy & unavailable. A few are quite charming & almost engaging with the customers. I've been in numerous times. Yes I'm a Vermonter. The other uncomfortable thing really has nothing to do with the market itself. Oddly enough it's the regular customers. They stroll in and out the isles at snail speed. It's almost like there in their own private space. Very passive aggressive, slowing down if they feel like you need to pass by. Very strange. Also when I pay with cash many times the cashier seems annoyed. Weird. read more

Went for the first time and was blown away! Excellent selection of nearly everything and with clean, local, aesthetic feel for a fantastic shopping experience. The store is set up with wine (complete with a well priced sale rack), pastries and breads, and stunning variety of local cheeses on the right; furthest back is an incredible sandwich shop and delicatessen. They have a stellar specials board which rotates or a choose your own ingredients which you select by filling out a sheet; dry goods and grocery isles form the main part of the store, packaged meats along the back wall, and frozen its along the left. The also had fresh, local bouquets of flowers near the registers. This will definable be a more frequent lunch stop for me! read more

This is a great little super market with a nice selection of fresh/local produce, meats, and breads. The deli is well stocked with Boars Head meats and rotating lunch offerings that are quite tasty! The store also has an impressive selection of beers/wines and a great cheese section as well. This is a perfect spot to pick up some quality local ingredients that the larger supermarket chains don't stock. read more

Shelburne supermarket always have loved This quintessential market. The selections have always been wonderful from the meat department to the produce even the dry goods. They pretty much have everything you could need. So you're probably wondering why I'm giving Only two stars. Well I've been coming here For Years. So my rating Over a long period of time. But yesterday when I went in and out to the checkout the young woman Was nothing but cold and rude. There's a lot of places we can go to purchase what we need . This isn't the first time I've experienced this it's pretty much how it is when you go there. It's almost as if you're putting them out when you get to the checkout an inconvenience that they might have to actually exchange niceties with the customer. No one saying that you have to have a full on intimate conversation. It's the strangest behavior and it's probably with 90% of the staff at the registers. It's almost like they've been trained to be snotty. No one's asking for anyone to kiss anybody's feet just be nice and engage if spoken to. For god sake it's almost like they're robots. And asking me if I need a bag really puts them out. We don't always have our bags with us I'm quite sure that's the case with many people. And when you asked me if I want to round up sometimes I don't wanna round up my change. But that's no reason to stop speaking and giving me a glare happens a lot. Could it be possible if this is what type of behavior they want their employees to have? I don't know but this is the typical experience many have going to this establishment. Like I said lots of other places to go and no one should feel judged or almost dirty when you leave the place such a bad experience as far as the customer employee interaction at the cash registers. read more

I've never written a yelp review before, which speaks to how disappointed I am with Shelburne Supermarket. The food is wonderful, the selections are great, and it's a good option for those who live nearby. The thing that really, really bothers me is the staff. The cashiers and deli staff run the gamut from ignoring you to being downright rude. I mean, extremely rude. My wife and I have worked in the service industry in various positions for many years, so we both understand that sometimes businesses have off days, and that a bad experience here or there is completely understandable. People who work in the service industry are only human, after all. But the way that I am treated here, regularly and consistently, makes me cringe every time I walk through the door. The deli staff (one bespectacled fellow in particular) behaves as if every order and every request are of the utmost inconvenience to him. I never see smiles or hear "thank you" from them. It's gotten to the point where I finally decided that I just can't go to that deli anymore. I can't support a place with such terrible customer service. It's a real shame, because the food is great. Even worse is the experience at the check-out. I try so hard to be friendly, but most often I'm brushed off as, again, an annoyance. Cashiers talk right over my head to one another as if I'm not even there. One dark haired, 30-something gentlemen seems to be in a consistently awful mood, and try as I might, I'm always met with a scowl and leave wondering "what did I do?". It's gotten to the point where, if we really need something, my wife and I have to decide who's willing to go be treated like a door mat at Shelburne Supermarket. I've started to think that, since Shelburne Supermarket is the only available option for those of us in Shelburne, they've decided that they can treat their customers poorly, and that we'll keep coming back out of necessity. I'm not going to shop there anymore. I just can't. Being that I've worked in the service industry for so long, it makes me really sad to see a business that treats people so poorly. It really, really does. I'd urge you to shop someplace else. Maybe they'll get the hint and start appreciating their clientele if more people start making an effort to shop someplace that values their business, treats them with respect, and exercises the slightest bit of good customer service. Shaw's and Price Chopper are head and shoulders above Shelburne Supermarket in this regard. This has gone on too long for me to keep subjecting myself to it, and I really wanted to express this to whoever reads my review, whether it's fellow customers or the employees. Worst customer service! The employees here are rude! At first I thought it was me then after talking w neighbors and friends I learn that they've been treated the same way. Prices here are usually a dollar more and item too. Best to travel a little further intown where you'll pay less and be treated better! read more

Living in Shelburne this place is awesome for our community. I shop here 3-5 times a week as it is so easy. They have a great selection but being small there are some things they can't stock. Their beer and wine selection is wonderful and they have great local breads. Good produce and meat and fresh veggies in season. Nice selection of cheeses. Sometimes their staff can be a bit surly but i have learned which ones to talk to in order to get a smile and service. Yes it may be a tad more expensive that the big box supermarkets but the convenience is well worth the few extra pennies it costs. read more

This used to be a great market. But since it changed hand it's now mediocre. I'll still go there but only due to proximity. Many products are being displaced with lower quality items. So now city market is my primary shopping location. read more

I live in Shelburne and I have been coming to and shopping at this store since the late 1960s (when my parents brought me there). Under two generations of Clayton Family ownership this has been the most pleasant, high quality grocery store in the area. The staff have always been helpful and eager to greet you. Now, unfortunately, under the varying and changing management of this store it has devolved into what I consider to be the WORST retail shopping experience. The aisles are so crowded and tight, the staff indifferent and unfriendly, the inventory is not of the quality it once was. Hannaford's, Price Chopper and Healthy Living simply blow it away. After today's shopping experience I have decided to only shop there if time and location force me to do so (I mean that in terms of being under duress). What a shame. A wonderful Shelburne institution is lost. read more

When I write that I've experienced better, I refer to the customer service being poor but the sandwiches are over the top. So it's five stars for the subs but it's two (if) for the customer service. The past two visits were the pits. Today, one person was ahead of me. No one behind me. Like five people working the deli. I filled out the sub card, waited for someone to acknowledge me or let me know they would be right with me. Nothing. I waited five minutes and just said, "Ummmm, do you want me to just leave this here". The guy looks at me and say's, "Just leave it there, one of us will grab it". Waiting.... Waiting..... Waiting. The same guy and two others wait on three people ahead of me and my order is still sitting there. The lady in the back comes up, waits on someone and than ask me if she can help me. I said, "Yes, you could have helped me three people ago, my order is still sitting there". Although the sandwiches are fresh and delish, the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I don't care how good the food is, if the customer service bites, it's not worth my return. I noticed a "HIRING DELI" sign outside as I was leaving. I am not sure what you may be hiring for as five people were working, standing around, chatting, laughing with each other and paying no attention to who was there. If I were you, I would fire the entire clan and start fresh. Customer service is so big in this day and age and it's so very hard to come by. Basic customer service skills are common sense. It's clear that several are school aged kids but the guy who originally told me to just leave my order and someone would grab it, was clearly mid 20's, early 30's. Good luck! read more

Overall a great little market that we spend waaaay to much money at. Love the service during regular business hours, and the deli food is incredible. I've eaten at deli's all over the country, and seriously - don't know of any that have such a consistency in such great tasting food. Good selection of everything, including wine and local coffee. Also, lots of long-term employees who take their jobs seriously and create a great, professional and friendly, environment. The only reason this isn't a five star rating is that when you come in "off hours" when the high school kids are running things - it gets a little lackluster and unprofessional. read more

This is a wonderful small market with friendly, cheerful people assisting and the best deli in northwest Vermont. I travel from St Albans at least once weekly and often more because of the trust I have in the stores' products and because it is fun to shop there with helpful, very nice people! The chain supermarket experience is pure drudgery and definitely not fun! read more

It's a great local place! A little high with the price. Some of the cashiers are absolutely not friendly. You touch the cashier's pen, and she freaks out about it! The other cashier I had seemed like she absolutely COULD NOT care less about her job. I realize some of these girls are in high school, and this job isn't a priority, but COME ON! I can pay less at Wal-Mart for the same JERK treatment. read more
