If I could give Shelly's Tea Room 10 stars, I absolutely would. Shelly is so kind and you can truly feel the love that goes into this family-owned tea room. We hosted a surprise party for my mom here, and Shelly was great to work with from start to finish. She was more than accommodating, so communicative, and genuinely cared about making the day special for us. When bad weather hit, she was understanding and kind. Lovely experience for Mothers Day! Room was decorated very nicely and I was lucky to have a 2 seat section a little separated from the rest. Otherwise seats are very close together. If u don't like dogs this not the place. There is a resident golden retriever but she was very well behaved. Service was good and the owners, looks like family owned and operated. The harpist was wonderful, loved that. Food was delicious and we were asked for 3 helpings of the tea sandwiches. Sandwiches thin on contents but delicious and filling overall. Tea was very good. Oh man, I drove 1.5 hours to come here for a 40th birthday party. And, man, was I disappointed! The atmosphere is beautiful here. I wish I could give my experience 4-5 stars but the service was terrible. I arrived late to the reservation which might have been why I had a bad experience. However, I was sitting directly next to a table that was arrived shortly after me and they received great service. The owner was serving everyone in the tea shop it seemed like. I was given tea sandwiches shortly after sitting which was nice. However, my tea order wasn't taken until 30 minutes of sitting down. I ordered the Egyptian Organic Chamomile tea which arrived promptly after ordering. BUT, then the tea I ordered steeped for another 20 minutes because I was never given a tea cup to drink out of! It wasn't until I told the organizer of our party to ask the staff to remove my order from the bill because I couldn't drink it - that a cup and saucer magically appeared. The pastries given were just fine. The black currant pastry had yogurt in it and was frozen? It didn't taste good. But, all the other pastries were decent and the plain scones with butter and clotted cream and jam were the best. The owner brought her golden retriever in the tea room. It roamed around and greeted customers at their tables. I love dogs so I thought this was comforting. But also, we were eating food and there was a dog in the eatery. Does this mean I can bring my dog there too? It was a confusing experience and the dog was adorable but there can't be a dog roaming around a tea room that is promoting a "proper" and "posh" experience. It just doesn't make sense. Unless the dog is wearing a suit and sits on a dog throne in a designated area in the tea room. read more

We had a fantastic time while enjoying high tea at Shelly's Tea Room. We made reservations and were given a 2:10 pm time. The place was packed when we arrived but they kept our reservation time. Shelly has a system for serving customers where new customers arrive at intervals. Make a reservation if you want to go. We were first served a delicious iced tea. That was followed by a choice of 4 finger sandwiches and you could have all 4 (and she came around again and you could have your choice again). When it came to tea there were 100 to choose from. Shelly also mentioned you could have a choice of a second pot of tea of your choice later. Pastries and scones were simply delicious. So much food that we took our scones for later. A great and fun experience that I would repeat again. read more

Service is okay but not brilliant as it seems to be only Shelly herself serving. I love dogs. However, they don't belong in a public establishment where food is served. They are animals with instincts no matter how well trained, the possibility of injury is always a threat. Remove the dog and I'll be back far more often. Ambiance - minus the dog - is wonderfully UK with its bit and bobs as decor. Tight and cozy - would love to see them expand, but I get why they don't - UK businesses thrive in the UK with such cramped confines pretty much everywhere when I travelled there. They don't see space as a major issue as Americans often value. Pricing is on the steep side (food and gifts) but particularly for their take away items such as their signature scones. And, they don't necessarily taste as good as fresh. read more

Had the Windsor high tea special at Shelly's for a friend's celebration and it was lovely. It starts with mulled tea, and a fun pull and snap gift that you open with a friend, which contains a joke, crown, and little gift (mine was a puzzle). You pick your own pot of tea from their extensive menu. I chose chai and it was okay, a bit lighter than expected. For food, an array of crustless finger sandwiches (egg, turkey, cucumber and mint, and pickles and cheese) are presented and served - my favorite was the pickles and cheese. They also had dairy free and gluten free options for folks with dietary restrictions. It finishes on a sweet note with warm scones with clotted cream, butter and jam, mince pie, chantilly cream filled cannoli looking wafers, and a boozey breadpudding. I put the clotted cream on every bite, so good. The service and ambiance were delightful, a little cozy piece of Britain in Plymouth, and it was a nice way to celebrate my friend. read more

Its on a busy street but there is a lot not far from there that you can park in. Service was friendly, but slow. There was only one person waiting on all the tables, but she was really nice. Tea selection is plentiful and the teas are great! Food selection is okay, very pricey and the sandwiches seemed small and more bread than filling for the price. The scones are okay, Ive had better. We really enjoy eating at Shelly's. Everything there is great. Scones (clotted cream!) and desserts to die for. Nice variety of finger sandwiches. We have been there four times now. First on a spy mission for a tea party we were putting on for our charitable org. Owner has been so gracious in giving us tips/tricks. Finally got to try coronation chicken and marmite!! You truly feel pampered and special here. Love the dog there, too. We will return time and again. On last visit I confessed I was there for the food, I don't like tea. We had such a wonderful time celebrating my birthday yesterday at Shelly's tea room. It is such a perfect addition to plymouth that i feel belongs here and should have been here all along! This place is beyond cozy and homey, they even have an adorable dog well behaved dog roaming around! I can't wait to come back and bring my mother and daughter here! you can definitely dress fancy and have your little girl wear her fanciest princess dress! Perfect place to visit near Christmas they decorate and it's beyond precious! Tips for visitors - DEFINITELY call and make a reservation they are VERY busy and this place is VERY small. Also, this is a very relaxed and laid back environment not a fast paced establishment so don't come here if you are in a rush. We spent about 90+ minutes here. Another thing was this place is definitely on the pricey side. We did the cream tea($15 per person and you pick two scones and a tea which is reasonable) , and got assorted sandwiches ($12 for 6 very tiny slices of sandwich). We were full after and it was definitely worth it. They have a $35 per person option which I will try next time. They seem to be getting some extra things that we did not get to experience(like Christmas crackers) . We also saw many people just ordering tea and a piece of cake. So you can really make it your own and do whatever you want. My only recommendation to the business would definitely be to hire an extra helper because even though the place is small Michelle was definitely being pulled a little too thin, she seemed to be doing absolutely everything and the experience definitely would have been better if she had some help. I've been to this place twice now and both times have not been good. There is a large dog who seems to live there, which is fine, except both times I've had dog hair in my scones. The sandwiches are mostly bread and very little filling. This time, the woman dropped one of the sandwiches on the table, and served it to me the next time she came around. She had just used Lysol cleaning spray to wipe down the table as we arrived. Service was slow and I was waiting 30minutes to ask for the check at the end. Spend a bit more and go somewhere hygienic. There are carpeted floors so I can't imagine how much dog hair and dander is not visible, since my friend and I both had some in our food this time around. read more

I can't say enough good things about Shelly's!! We decided to have our book club meeting here and it was the perfect spot since our book was based in England. We decided to go for The Windsor option to get the full experience. The amount of teas you have to choose from is almost 200 I think, and they tell you the benefits of the different kinds of teas. Met a friend here for tea one afternoon. I was lucky enough to find an open parking spot right in front of the restaurant. Otherwise I would say plan to do some walking as parking is limited in this area. The tea room is in the smaller side, but very nicely laid out with several tables and a small area to purchase tea related items. I recommend calling ahead to make reservations due to the size of the establishment. We thankfully did this and our table was ready when we arrived. We did notice that other tables who arrived after us got asked for their order before us, but we still were waited on relatively quickly. The woman who waited on us was very nice and helpful. Our table of three ordered one large pot of tea and one smaller pot as well to ensure we had enough. We chose earl grey as it is one of our favorites. I was surprised at the mild flavor in comparison to the teas I'm used to drinking. The flavors remained mild even after steeping longer. It was still very good, just a little lighter than I prefer. We also shared 4 scones and one slice of cake. I did feel that everything was a tad dry. However, slathering on a generous amount of preserves and clotted cream helped greatly. One of the ladies in our party kept smelling urine, she thought it was the carpet, it ended up being her chair. The chocolate cake was a huge disappointment, dry and stale you couldn't eat it, the scones weren't the best I've had, just ok. The lemon cake was fabulous as well as teas. Very disappointed as I was looking forward to eating there as I LOVE tea rooms. The first thing I noticed was a resident Golden Retriever. I love dogs, but not thrilled with a strange dog inside on a carpet in the way of patrons and just wandering about. Health issue for sure and I am not sure if this is even allowed at an indoor restaurant. The food overpriced and the scones for sale prepackaged by another company, so no sure if the ones served were fresh or frozen Silverware and dishes could have used a good cleaning as the upholstered chairs and rug on the floor with probable dog hair. There was an odd smell which was not from food. My pressed coffee was good but the pot was broken and in need of replacement. The tea pot had no cozy on it so the tea got cold fast. My scone was fair. Not a place I would ever go again sorry to say. read more

The owner is stingy and is the only one running the operation (which is why it takes a billion years to get served). If you want to share anything, good luck. My mother and I tried to share the egregiously priced Windsor (35.95) and we were told we would both have to pay for separate arrangements. Why would I spend as much money on scones and sandwiches I can easily make at home as I would for a gourmet dinner? The atmosphere in the eatery is equally dismal. Disgrace of a tea room! Save your time and go to Dunbar tea room in sandwich; we had such service which is unbecoming of a place to even call itself a tea house. We had gone to Shellys during the afternoon while they were having a "news" story done in the shop and were placed adjacent to them which we were not told about or a simple "we are having a news story done, we are sorry if it gets in your way" which it did. The owner of the shop was nice enough but made no effort for conversation, then proceeded to bring dry day old scones and when ordering the cream tea proceeded to not even bring milk. Overall the service was not attentive, not only did they leave us unattended but didn't even bother to check to see if we were doing okay or needed anything; their dog was cute when we met the lovely pet, but even the dog could not save the place. They had said for so long "the British were coming", well maybe they shouldn't have bothered if their service had been better. In the end, best go to Dunbar and save yourself some time and good experience. read more

If you don't want to have to step over a huge dog and smell of dog while you try to enjoy food and tea don't go here.
