Avoid this place at all costs--there are far better options to eat elsewhere. From the start, things went downhill. We were handed plastic utensils for unknown reasons, but we let that slide. Regarding drinks, we were instructed to serve ourselves behind the register. As for the food, it was practically thrown onto the table. When we asked for dipping sauce, that too was carelessly tossed, with half of it spilling on the way. What upset me was the handling of the bill. When it was brought to me, I handed over my credit card, and it was taken quickly--no issue there. But when I received my receipt to sign, there was a section with four tip options (18%, 20%, 22%, or 25%). I asked the waiter for the original receipt to check if the 18% tip had already been included. He hesitated, mumbled something, and disappeared for a solid five minutes. I had to ask the person behind the register to bring me the original receipt before signing. Finally, the waiter returned with the receipt and a flimsy excuse, saying the tip had already been added and there was no need to tip again. This shady practice is unacceptable. The food was far from what it used to be, the service was practically non-existent, and this is the worst kosher restaurant we've been to in a long time. Anything in the area, of Deal and Long Branch is a better choice than this place. Just don't even bother here in my humble opinion. Much has been said about Chang Mao Sakura over its rich 15 year history. This two-space Kosher Chinese restaurant is of the best (if not the only) in the area. Some locals have described it as the "best Chinese place in the world," still others have described it as a place to hold your nose in the parking lot due to smell. Regardless, if you are craving some good old fashioned Americanized Chinese food that won't break the bank, this is it. My wife gives me a pass to come here once every summer, and I gladly take it! This place is generally no reservations necessary, but it can get very full in summer months on the weekends. The paintings inside give it a calm ambiance, to juxtapose against a usually rowdy and disrespectful crowd. The staff works hard to turn tables quickly, and they are no nonsense. You should know what a pu-pu platter is by now. You should know to specifically ask for water. You should know that the "spaghetti with marinara sauce" option on the menu is never available. "We have no tomato" said one waiter. There's always lots of yelling in the kitchen. The bathrooms may not in the best shape, and I could have sworn my chicken tasted undercooked. Yup it's good food and it's kosher. The decor is seventies-Chinese-restaurant. The staff was overburdened. All things considered the waiter got the job done and the food was everything you expect from a typical kosher Chinese restaurant. No surprises but they did have brown rice and the sushi was very fresh. Yes I had to request soy sauce. Everything was hot enough. It's a bit frustrating when you get a beverage in the bottle with no glass. It's annoying when you have to beg someone to pick up your credit card to cash out. My experience started when I picked up my food. They were rude and made five people wait inside a small indoors area during corona virus. The soup containers they provided were open, which resulted in the soup spilling all over my car. They also did not provide utensils or napkins. The waiter, a very tall man, was very upset that my friend asked questions about the food. Simple questions like is there meat in this, or what is the soup made from... twice he just walked away! My family came to Chang Mao for dinner with some relatives that were visiting from out of town. Upon arrival, we were seated within ten minutes. The tables were not set and we asked multiple servers three times for silver wear and place settings. The server signed out of annoyance and complied with our request. When she arrived at our table with the place settings, instead of placing them by each patron, she tossed them at us. I am absolutely appalled at this point at the service. Tables should be automatically set for the next round of guests, not to mention it shouldn't be an extra chore and an inconvenience for the wait staff to provide us with such a standard request as place settings. At this point we were already embarrassed in front of our relatives that we had brought them to a restaurant with such awful service. I couldn't believe with a restaurant as large and packed as this that they only had two waiters on hand and possibly one chef! They were completely unorganized and unprepared for a Sunday night. To make matters worse, I think every table had a complaint. At this point this restaurant should no longer be in business. It took roughly 2.5 hours for our meal to come from the kitchen. Due to the lack of staff our waitress decided to divide the combination into 3's. Egg rolls first, soup second and some of us were lucky to get or entree at all not to mention the food was ice cold! After asking for our food multiple times some of us lost our appetite and cancelled our order. She brought the food that was cancelled, we told her we didn't want it anymore she angrily dropped it on the table food splattered everywhere. We were terribly hungry and our relatives had a long drive back home. This was our last straw. We complained to management and They did nothing but patronize us. this place is glatt kosher which makes prices higher than non-kosher places. however, the food is very good. my wife and i had the special dinner; pu pu platter, soup, main course and desert. my wife likes duck so the $30 per person meal for her was $37. there is an up charge for duck but worth it. first the table was set and we were brought hot tea, noodles and duck sauce. the soupo was hot and delicious. the pu pu platter consisted of egg roll, chicken wing, chicken stick, dumpling and fried wonton. i had the general chicken. i asked that it not be spicy and it came as asked. my wide's duck was not fatty and the sauce ver good. desert was lichee nuts (actually a fruit. we ordered food to take home and had it on a separate bill because they include an 18% gratuity to each bill. however, they do the 18% including the sales tax. who tios on the tax portion of a bill? i usually leave 20% so i let it go. if the take out portion of the bill was on the same check, i would have paid 18% on that part of the order. the only problem was they forgot my wife's soup in the take out portion.since we live in east brunswick, i was not going bck. nect time there i will bring it to their attention. all i can say is expensive but good food. read more
