Shen's consistently has good food and service. We went last night primarily for sushi and also had the hot and sour soup, which was very good -- especially if you like it mushroom-forward. For sushi, we had the Sunset roll (fresh salmon and lemon over a spicy salmon roll), broiled scallops on seaweed salad, and a selection of tuna, yellowtail, and white tuna nigiri. The yellowtail stood out as very good, and the scallops were excellent. The salmon and white tuna were more average -- I'd skip those and lean into the stronger options. Honestly, one of the worst dining experiences I've had. It took forever for someone to even come over and take our order. When the food finally came out, my order was incomplete, and the appetizer never showed up. When I asked about it, the server told me he had forgotten to put it in. On top of that, we waited way too long for our food after ordering. Between the long wait, the missing items, and the poor service, the whole experience was extremely disappointing. Not good! Ordered this and had it delivered to a hotel I way staying at. The never brought my drink or a plastic for or spoon. The wonton soup was horrible so I sat it aside for my main meal and it was so greasy. The grease leaked out the bag and was over everything. We were excited to go to Shen's as reviews and recommendations looked solid. We ended up being so disappointed. The outside looked run down and almost abandoned. The inside wasn't much better. The booths were dirty and the upholstering was very loose. The glass waterfall wall was dirty and hadn't been cleaned in too long. Overall everything looked old, worn, and overly used. We had high hopes for the food. The Mongolian Beef was solid, but the sushi could have been described as wet and tasteless. Honestly, Sake was so much better. Stopped in for a quick dinner last night. Started with the house Pinot Grigio and a sushi sampler. Wine was cold, sushi was pretty good. Then ordered the hot and sour soup and veggie dumplings. I found the soup lacking a bit. Flavour seemed a little off to me. Dumplings were just ok. After a few minutes of cooling off they all seemed to stick together. But the flavour was ok. Then we split the Chicken king po with some steamed rice. WAY too much salt. My husband, who loves his salt , said the same thing. We could barely eat it. You can imagine all the plates, bowls etc on the table after ordering this amount of food. Not one plate was removed. We had a table full of dirty dishes by the time we asked for the bill. Service was fantastic. Our waitress was very busy, but, she was cheerful, joking, and very friendly and accommodating. There is a menu, and there is an authentic Chinese menu. I didn't find what i wanted on the menu so i asked if they had it.....she brought me the "other" menu. We ordered peking duck, sesame chicken, Sichuan dumplings, pan fried dumplings, scallion pancake, ma po tofu, beef tendon, the ma pu green beans, and Sichuan beef. The ONLY complaint, and not really complaint.....critique maybe? The scallion pancake would have been better if it wasn't as greasy......still great, perfect crispness, perfect flavor and chewyness.... Now, everything else..... OMFG!!!! She enjoyed her spicy crab, dynamite roll and avocado roll. She also likes the miso soup, which has plenty of tofu and seaweed. I ordered dynamite roll, Alaska roll (salmon and avocado), and tekka (tuna) roll. All of the sushi was very fresh and well made. I had the chicken corn soup. I'd never tried it before, so I was up to trying something new. It was tasty. It's a lot like egg drop soup with a corn taste. I was really wanting some spice in my life too, so I tried their mala tendon. It was really good. My friend asked if it was spicy. I told her I thought it was a little spicy. So she would probably find it really hot. She kept asking about it, so I offered her a taste, she also found it to be tasty. But told me it was really spicy. She marveled at how I just kept eating it. So, if you're don't really enjoy spicy food, this might not be your top choice. Personally. I love things super spicy, so it was right up my alley. Went to Shens on May 10,2026 with another couple. We have all been there several times. Our service was impeccable and the atmosphere was beautiful. Two of us got General Tso pork and one got the chicken. I have had this at many restaurants over the years but would not advise it here. The menu says the sauce is hot but it should have a warning as it was extremely hot. I choked on the first bite. None of us ate it all and should have sent it back. It is the day after and it got us up during the night and do not feel well today. I can eat hot but this was rediculous!! read more

Asked for fried rice got white rice. My small daughter only ordered fried rice only , im thinking the small side of fried rice nope our server rung in a $12.95 plate of fried rice for a small child. I had high expectations from looking at the menu from their website. They had Peking Duck, Braised Beef Noodle Soup and sushi! I figured I would try Peking Duck since I have not had one since 20 years. The last time I had Peking Duck was in Beijing and it was really good. Maybe this was not a good idea... Peking Duck came out, the presentation was far off from what I have imagined. I should have searched for the actual food photo on Yelp or online. Anyway, it also came with drumsticks. I felt like getting fried chicken to be honest. Anyway, the crispy duck skin was somewhat similar to what I had in mind, meat was kind of dry. I usually don't rely on the sauce but for this one, I had to rely on the sauce and cover the dryness with the moisture from the sauce. Steamed buns were okay when they were warm but obviously not after ten to fifteen minutes when they were cold. Taking off one star just because of this menu. I will try other menu when I have the opportunity next time, not Peking Duck anymore. Sashimi Sampler and Sushi Sampler were both good. Except they should really make the portion bigger and charge a bit more. Especially Sashimi Sampler had half the plate empty. But, they were very good. Service was good and fast. I had really high expectations but the experience fell short. It was AOK. 3 1/2 stars, I do expect to return for another shot. The hostess seemed unhappy and the greeting not enthusiastic. We sat in a half circle booth with two salt shakers sitting on the table. Not what I would normally expect at a Szechuan restaurant. I got up to grab a soy sauce decanter off a nearby table and realized that all the tables had cloth napkin rolled utensils and small plates- except ours. Our waitress had already been to see us three times and apparently didn't notice this. She was very new, she told us. So I blame lack of sufficient training, not blaming her. She was also not trained that rice is supposed to accompany the entrees. We had to ask for it after they were delivered. We flagged down a busboy before the app arrived and he brought the place settings. The Szechuan dumplings were tasty but I found the dough too thick and the filling very dense. More of like a German style dumpling except for the chili oil. I had the Peppercorn Beef which is a dish that needs mixing and was surprised it didn't come with a large spoon to do so. It was incredibly HOT and I mean the temperature. It was like boiling from the inside out like a Hot Pocket straight from the microwave. This was frustrating as I had to scoop a little at a time onto the plate and wait for it to cool! The spice level was stellar but I didn't get as much of that numbing sensation as I would like. Honestly the leftovers next day, after the flavor blended further, were much more enjoyable. My husband had the Cheng Du Pork and liked it. It was also packing a lot of heat. The white rice struck me as being plain old Carolina Rice, not the unmistakable Chinese "sticky" rice. It was a wee bit underdone. We had the house Saki and Plum Saki and these were generous servings and tasty, especially the plum which I would order again. There were a good number of waitstaff, runners, busboys around and I found it really odd that not a single one was Chinese. Overall the restaurant is very pretty but seemed like it could be a little cleaner. There were no paper towels in the bathroom and I actually opened the under sink cabinet and found some. So, I think I'll seek some Szechuan in Oxford next time the craving strikes, but will get back to Shen's at a future date. read more

Went here a year ago and went again today. The food has gone downhill! My crab Rangoon was completely empty. I asked for a new order and the new ones had no filling in it either. The combo low mein lacked flavor. The peppercorn steak was almost inedible how spicy it was. The general Taos chicken was cold. The interior is very pretty. But the exterior is falling apart - needs some upkeep. Crab Rangoon is delicious. We ordered the Lettuce Wraps but they have changed: now just a Spicy Tablespoon of wet chicken on a small Lettuce round. The Lettuce is so small, you can't really fold them. It was awful. The Chicken fried rice was good although the portion is smaller than before. No hot green tea available, which is really weird. Lots of tables, only one server. Then the host began helping. Service was slow. We need more drinks but the server didn't return to check on us, she was too busy. We could see it wasn't her fault. The restaurant needs minimum two servers for lunch. We left 20% anyway, but I'm not sure others did. Saw a couple leave before they finished their meal, not even sure if they paid. What used to be great, now is mediocre. Needs improvement. read more

The prices were great considering the portion sizes are huge! The restaurant is large and has plenty of places for a cozy date night or an evening with friends. I would say "Shens" is hit or miss depending on what you order. I went here multiple times during the summer , I never had a bad sushi experience. The quality is very good for dayton Ohio. I feel I had a few cooked dishes that were ok, nothing was bad. But they weren't great. I really liked the sizzling rice soup. Some of the reviews people didn't like it, I was a bit surprised. On the other hand , I didn't like the lettuce wraps, crab raggoons, or dumpling'. Others did !! So I think it might just depend what you are looking for and what you like. A great dining experience after a long day on the road. The texture of the seafood pan-fried noodles was excellent. The flavor of the Hunan Shrimp and Chicken had tons of flavor and enough spice to satisfy. Many dishes included imitation crabmeat, and did not clearly communicate this on the menu. Waitstaff is professional, courteous, attentive, and well engaged. My wife says: She ordered the house salad with ginger sauce and the scallop and shrimp with garlic sauce. The vegetables are perfectly crisp tender. The sauce has zip, but it's not overwhelming. She is very pleased with it. I ordered Szechuan beef with fried rice and miso soup. The miso soup was excellent, spectacular evening. Well done, great texture, great taste. It was probably one of the better miso soups I've ever eaten. For what that's worth. The meat is nicely cut it's a excellent serving size with good fresh well cooked and properly cooked vegetables. The flavor is solid. I asked for sorry they gave me Sawyer a good clean container they had multiple breeds. Again they had a great craft beer selection, surprisingly enough.
