We went here for Thanksgiving dinner but were very disappointed. My wife had chicken that was completely overcooked and dry. The vegetables left a lot to be desired. The waitress was nice but kind of nervous. Kind of a strange ambiance when we walked in like they weren't prepared for customers. I'm not sure why all the negative posts here. Every time I have gotten food from here, it was great. My son loves the French toast as it comes on nice thick, cut brioche bread. The pancakes are always nice and fluffy, and if we get eggs, they're always cooked just as we ask for them. I wish I had pics to show. We got chicken souvlaki the other day along with a Greek salad and both were delicious. The feta cheese was so good, and the salad wasn't drowning in dressing. The veggies were so nice and fresh too. The tzatziki sauce was fresh and yummy. Give this place a try. It could use a little updating inside, and the servers sometimes talk too much personal stuff out on the floor, but they're nice anyway. read more

Sherban's is a disgrace to the sanctity of Jersey diners. I do not understand how people continue to patron this establishment. We tried it for the first time today, and wow. First, the decor was endearing and we were excited to be in such a classic diner atmosphere. We were hyped to eat a quality jersey diner breakfast. Then we met our waitress who barked at us like we were her grandchildren causing trouble. The food was disappointing because we honestly cook a better breakfast at home. I ordered French toast with fruit-- and was promptly told it's not really fruit, it's fruit topping (like the kind you'd put on ice cream). I'm glad she told me, I ordered plain French toast instead. How can you not have fresh fruit for waffles/french toast???? Cheap. My boyfriend ordered a Spanish omelet and asked for bacon to be added into it. She promptly told him no, she'd put the bacon on the side of my French toast because it would cost less and she was "doing us a favor". But he wanted it IN the omelette. So we quickly realized you don't actually get to order what you want here. Side note: while she was bringing my hot chocolate a coworker bumped her and it made a mess of the hot chocolate all over the dish. There was hardly any whipped cream especially after it spilled. But that's what they gave me. It tasted fine (the best thing we had tbh). Then our food came and oh lord. Look at that "omelette". It's scrambled eggs with huge chunks of pepper onion SALSA? (Menu said tomatoes) and some surprise mushrooms. It was all just laid on top of the eggs. That's not an omelette. And the bacon was just thrown on top of all of it. French toast was so buttery and soggy, really tasted like someone's grandparent cooked it. And if that was the case fine but I'm paying money for this! I can make it better myself! Disappointed. We came here for a repast after a funeral. There were about 2 servers for 30+ ppl. Table was set so they knew about us coming in advance. The tableware and utensils were filthy,one water pitcher had a hole in it and was leaking all over the table. The room we were in smelled of mold and there was water damage all over the ceiling. The servers were not very friendly considering the occasion, should have said something to the family. The food was ok,but took forever to come out. My husband and I have been eating at Sherban's Diner for over 40 years. Throughout the years the food and service has always been top notch. We've always enjoyed eating there. Until today. Our waitress was excellent, friendly and professional. The man at the cash register was none of the above. I don't know if he is an owner or manager. He was having a disagreement on the phone with Uber and or a customer about a bill amount on a delivery. I learned this because he was yelling into the phone for most of our visit. There was no escaping or ignoring his tirade. The waitress apologized for the disturbance, repeatedly. She had nothing to apologize for, as I told her. It was so awful, I asked my husband to take me home, even though I wasn't finished. This man needs to learn a very important point about the service industry. If you've got a problem at your business, take it in the back. Never, ever expose your problems to your guests/customers. Ever. It was so bad and so loud, my stomach turned to knots. I grew up with this kind of out of control behavior. I refuse to be subjected to it as an adult. read more

For many, many years this was my go to diner. I guess I haven't been there in awhile as new places have sprung up in the area. However, I find it to be a very solid breakfast place with good food, pleasant service, and lots of parking. I also did recently have a late night veggie Panini here that I really enjoyed. I never criticize the writings here of others but in my personal opinion, it is a lot better than the general review consensus. read more

Went for breakfast on a Wednesday around 11am, so admittedly a weird time. Place was practically empty. First thing I notice right off the bat was the musty smell. Not appetizing. This place feels kinda run down, and the front stairs are a bit treacherous- steep and uneven. Wife ordered hard boiled eggs and they came out warm. My omelet was dry. Home fries were just potatoes, and didn't have the crunch I like. Wife's bacon was flavorless. Food came out very fast. 2 mediocre breakfasts with coffee and juice ran us $20, so I could have done it cheaper and better at home. I'll never come back here. read more

I usually don't post negative Reviews/comments but I just thought i'd share this, and i do hope that administration looks into this issue. So yesterday I was doing DoorDash and as I entered the restaurant it was fairly empty. Two (African-American) Females dining in, and a (Caucasian) Male being serviced. Now i'm very observant of my surroundings and things that go on. I was first not acknowledged by this (Caucasian) Woman who works in the Diner, then I just stood there and wondered if she was even going to say anything to me, and she didn't As this White Male was taken care of by HER, she was nothing but nice to him and as he left she even told him to have a nice day, etc. I'm still waiting for the order, about 5mins later she still says nothing to me , I was even looking over at the Delicious sweet Treats as I was interested in returning to buy something for myself. Finally A (Hispanic) lady comes out with the food and finally acknowledges that i'm picking up an order for DoorDash, she hands me the food and tells me to have a nice day. As i'm walking out the door the (Caucasian) lady is acting like she's so busy working and says nothing. This is very disappointing to me as a African American Male that we still live in a society today where racism is still very evident. This is not a good look for your business. Just know i'd prefer to not even go back to this establishment, only because of the (Hispanic) lady being nice I would consider it. But it's a NO for me ‍ read more

I visited Sheehan's diner in South Plainfield today and have to say the service, decor, cleanliness and food was the worst I have ever had. I wouldn't eat the food if it were free. I think they should close down. They had no condiments for a basic burger and made no apologies for the poor food and service. Your money would be better spent at McDonalds. I'm sorry to say, the place is going down hill. Had breakfast there today. 1st they had no help except for the owners son (who was trying to take orders and phone orders as well). Can't blame him as help is hard to find. I go there frequently but don't think I will anymore. My french toast was bland and you could taste the grease it was cooked in. My son's eggs benedict wasn't as good as it usually is. He asked for fries got homefries which to me are tasteless. I think they need new cooks as well. Used to be good. I thought I was part of a prank TV show when I walked in. It was a Saturday morning and there were only a handful of tables filled. The hostess was a little over-personal. Which is fine. It just seemed like she was compensating for what we were about to experience. We sat down and the bench was broken. The waitress came over and got our drink orders. Then immediately asked if we knew what we wanted to eat. We just opened up the menus and it felt rushed. She came back with our drinks and we were ready to order. She didn't write anything down which I was a little concerned about because she seemed confused as we were ordering. Us placing our orders also seemed like we were being rushed. We had 2 french toast orders, a ham egg cheese sandwich, and I ordered disco fries and 2 eggs. The waitress was very confused by my order. Saying the eggs came with potatoes anyway. Then someone else ordered a grilled cheese at our table and the waitress seemed to have an attitude. I doubted our food would come out of that kitchen correctly. She came out and placed a plate of jelly, syrup, and butter on the table. The butter were 2 globs with one having toast crumbs on it. Not a huge deal but the presentation was very sloppy. Our food arrived. French toast and grilled cheese orders were fine. I assume because they were basic. I got my 2 eggs. The fries were a huge disappointment. They were standard diner fries but the cheese was not mozzarella. It was that proceseed plastic cheese slices that was microwaved for 10 seconds. There was also no gravy! The ham, egg, and cheese sandwich had the same awful cheese on it. We ate it and kept our heads down because we just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. The check came and that is when I decided to create a Yelp account to review this place. The reciept said that I clearly get gravy and we were charged for it. The sandwich had a $0.40 charge for a hard roll and $0.95 for extra cheese. The extra cheese was never ordered by anyone. So the sandwich was $6.10 for really poor quality. Overall, the place is very out dated and nearly empty. The staff walked around with a glazed over expression. Just kind of getting through the day. It was just a very bizarre experience. Like I said, I feel like we were part of a prank TV show. But there were no cameras and no comedic relief. I am expecting I will feel sick from this food later. UPDATE: 3 out of the 4 of us did get sick from the food. We really regret spending money here. read more

Diner was ok. Every time you go try a new place, whether you hear good rating on it on yelp, etc, you should always show up at a place with no expectations and you will go home happy or ok. You wont go home pissed off, unless the service was horrible. This place was actually decent. They have the usual menu that most diners have, from burgers, to chicken, to wraps, pancakes, eggs, chicken gyros, omellettes, you get where im coming from? I wanted to be safe at the time, and just grabbed myself some pancakes with toast and butter with some syrup. Orange juice was from concentrate but was still good. I enjoyed my meal actually. Service wasnt the fastest, but it wasnt slow either. Overall, I gave it 3 stars. I will come back here and try other food on the menu, that might make me change my rating one day. I had gone to Sherban's Diner yesterday on Sept. 19, 2019, and had met the owner there. I only went to go order some bread pudding to go. He seemed quite unfriendly, miserable, and rude. When making the purchase, he snatched the credit card out of my hand, before throwing the receipt and pen on the counter. Did not like the horrible service, and he made short responses. The experience I had there TODAY was worse. I had expected to see someone different, but instead the owner was there. There were strange and depressing vibes in the diner. The owner of the diner was pretty unfriendly, looked miserable, slouched the whole time, and was disgusting. NO manners AT ALL. He had passed gas, VERY loudly in public in front of other patrons behind the register. I even had to endure the smell when paying at the register, with a smile on my face. He even snatched my card a bit aggressively, which I did NOT appreciate. I work at food service elsewhere, and NEVER treat my customers like that. The owner had also made a mistake on one of the waitresses' checks, which almost caused her to quit; she had told him that her check was more than that, before storming out, and saying, "I'm out of here." He had to chase her outside, and beg her to come back. On the other hand, the waitresses were very kind, and have provided great service. read more

"The Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains Long After the Sweetness of Low Price is Forgotten" I used to go into a busy and bustling Sherban's Diner on Friday evenings with my mother and grandmother nearly every Friday...and the food, service..I mean EVERYTHING was spectacular...30 years ago. Fast forward to 2019 (tonight specifically) and I can't even justify ONE star. Just so you know.. we were a party of 8. When we got there tonight at approximately 8:30pm, there were 2 cars in the parking lot and there was 1 woman sitting alone at a table ready to tab out with NO other customers. Odd for a Friday night...but I figured its Good Friday...people are likely at church or ate early dinner before shopping for Easter outfits because maybe they had they day off from work. Not the case. We placed our orders with the server...who appeared to be attentive. Nice...yes. Attentive? My first daughter asked for a french toast breakfast with bacon, scrambled eggs WITH AMERICAN cheese. There was no cheese. My 2nd daughter asked for the Seafood Creole NO RICE NO PASTA (she's on this keto thing)...her seafood came on top of rice. She politely sent the dish back to the kitchen to be remade. She got halfway done with her remade plate and found a shrimp that had not been cleaned. It had a FULL intestinal vein in it...which grossed her out. More on that in a bit. My 1 grandson had the kids burger which was so underseasoned that even his year and a half old tastebuds wouldn't eat it. He was good with the fries though. So we asked if we could swap out the burger for some chicken tenders...no fries. They said OK...but we would still have to pay for half the burger. I said OK fine... My 3rd daughter ordered french toast, scrambled eggs with cheese and bacon...pancakes showed up to the table about 7 minutes after everyone else's food... and nothing else. She just sent the pancakes back and refused to eat because to her...everything else "looked nasty". My daughter in law ordered a french toast breafast as well...and admitted it was BLAND. Homefries were bland and DRY. My son ordered the seafood platter which was SUPPOSED to come with potato and a vegetable (he wanted double fries). The manager asked him at the end of the meal if he wanted his fries and he declined. But that was only BECAUSE he was disappointed by everything else.. When arguing with the manager later...and I will get to this in a bit..., my son (who has a voice barely above a whisper...not my daughters though) said...no no...its ok. Later, when we argued over the bill, the manager came to the table and apologized for missing the sides...asked him if he wanted his sides and he declined saying he was dissatisfied with the entire night. But that was only BECAUSE he was disappointed by everything else. The manager replied, "so YOU were unahappy with FRIED seafood' (emphasis on all the capitalized words). Yelpers...not sure what THAT was supposed to mean...but yes, we are African American. Does that mean we have to like tasteless food despite it being fried? And BTW, we don't all eat fried chicken and watermelon either. The straw that broke the camel's back was when the manager instructed her adult son to call the cops on us (BTW, he told her he didn't know the number...and personally I don't think he wanted to). We were requesting a 50% discount on the ENTIRE bill. During a heated arument where my 2nd daughter insisted that they served her poop (remember...intestinal vein left in the shrimp). The manager did not want to grant the request for a discount saying that we couldn't guarantee that we wouldn't post negative reviews of the restaurant. Ordered a burger and it was extremely dry. Place filthy dirty! Ordered curly fries with burger and waiter brought regular steak fries. Not a good experience! They used to put cucumber salad on table. I eat here at least 3 times a week, and not just dinners. I've eaten in lots of diners, and this one is great. Not had 1 bad meal yet. Owners are friendly...waitresses are competent......you are a stranger but one time.....I feel like family! I've also eaten at Park Diner. Food was good, but much much too impersonal for my taste and I don't feel as safe or comfortable there. Sherbans hss done some painting, recovered booths, new counter tops and updated bathroom. I was really surprised at the "facelift" Sherbans underwent! I met a client there on Weds. when I walked in I noticed how much brighter it was! The booths were all redone and new chairs! The food was and still is very good here. Love the coleslaw at Sherbans. Bravo Peter! read more

DIRTY DIRTY GERMS!! gross!! my husband and I went here for brunch and first off you could tell the dishes weren't clean....that's nothing compared to the next horror. A man, who works there kept picking his nose, and I mean really digging up there. Right in the middle of the diner. I almost threw up and so did my husband. I had to pay this guy to after we attempted to eat our food. I handed him my debit card with a tissue over my hand and my purell waiting, I practically boiled my hands when I got home and lysoled my car....but wait there's more. I have been going here with family for over 15 years, they just refreshed in interior and it looks great! The food has always been consistent, some of my favorites are the prime rib and waffles! The service is always attentive and the management truly values your business, you can feel it from the moment you walk in and feel welcome! Sherban's is okay if it's late and you're hungry. That's about all I can say. The food isn't great, but it's not inedible. They DO have some good baklava, and they serve this cucumber salad at the beginning of the meal, which is pretty good. The wait staff is, for the most part, friendly. In the grand tradition of diners, you can get basically anything you want here from spaghetti to gyros to burgers. I'd skip anything breaded and fried. Typical diner food. Fast service. Diner is very dated but its a diner. Burgers are decent and the cucumber salad rocks. Sherban's really needs to clean it up though old doesn't mean you have to be dirty. The carpet is as old as the diner. Breakfast is decent but I wouldn't stray further than that. The place is scary late night because you just never know who may stroll in and it's really isolated over there late at night. read more
