This is a review for both the hotel and the restaurant. First to the hotel. As Lindsey said below the carpet and decor is horrid, but I don't agree that at 120 a night I am getting what I paid for. While there is "free" continental breakfast and wireless Internet, the housekeeping needs to be brought up to par. The seat of the desk chair is stained...including one that looks to close to blood to make me want to sit in it. Being that there are only 11 rooms in this place it should be spotless. I am for sure paying for location here, it is right across the street from VMI, and in the historic downtown area. Also, there is assigned parking-which you have to replace and move a cone every time you leave so that someone else doesn't take your spot. Now to the restaurant. I thought the 11 dollar shrimp, scallop and grits special sounded good--but the tomato sauce was SO overbearing on the other flavors. The crab bisque, was okay--but some of the roux wasn't mixed in well and resulted in some clumps. The service was really the thing that saved this place from 2 stars. I think this one of those "you get what you pay for" hotels. Clean, reasonably well-kept rooms, but with hideous carpet and decor that hasn't been updated since the early 70s. Hotel Review: Very cute atmosphere! Very nice desk lady! I overheard her talking to another customer whom had a trailer and needed an extra parking spot and the desk lady gladly gave up hers for her. There are no stairs in this facility, you use traditional keys to get into the room, and everyone has a reserved parking spot. I am guessing there are about 15 rooms here. The rooms are very nice and spacious, pretty decor as well. Easy access to downtown shopping, restaurants, and w&l. Breakfast is continental and they had cereals, breads, yogurt, fruit, teas, coffee. Sadly, this restaurant has gone from impressive to a frustrating disappointment. They usually have good food, and I would recommend them for lunch, but dinner has become a joke. During my most recent visit, I ordered a fettuccine and spicy Italian sausage dish, and was not at all excited by what was placed in front of me: a minuscule portion of egg noodles with a bit of ground sausage and red sauce. It didn't taste bad at all, but left me hungry. I don't expect to be hungry after a $17 pasta dish. Also, our waitress left much to be desired. Perhaps it was because our table didn't order any alcohol, or maybe she was just having a bad day, but she was awfully inattentive. I'm sorry, Sheridan. I used to enjoy my meals there but have been too disappointed recently. I'm done wasting money on overpriced food and iffy service. You've lost another local. read more

brilliant. after eating at ruby Tuesday's this afternoon, anything would have tasted magical, but I believe the food here has an extra touch that most restaurants don't have. I got the grilled chicken sandwich and my lover got the grilled vegetable club. it was sensational, literally. it looked clean and organized, the chicken smelled of the grill and the bun was not too greasy. tasted great. I had the Devils backbone IPA with it. can't complain. the sandwich left me begging for more. we ventured out and ended the week with the hazelnut cheesecake. OH MY!! I'm still salivating at the thought. delightful hazelnut crust. not too heavy. The patio is a great place for lunch! The lunch menu is great and priced reasonably compared to other Lex choices. I have had both the bbq and the chicken salad and like them. I am not a huge fan of the crab cakes and my husband didn't love the shrimp and grits (he lived in SC, he knows good shrimp & grits). The key lime pie is very good.... Sheridan Livery is a decent place to go for a meal in Lexington. It has a patio which is nice for good weather. The food is inferior to Southern Inn and about the same price, so I would direct people to Southern Inn instead. The hotel is dated but in a good location in Lexington. Rooms are reasonably priced. The key to picking a hotel in Lexington is to find one that is within walking distance to everything you want, which basically limits you to this one and Hampton Inn Col Alto. If you are visiting children during parents weekend or graduation the last thing you want to deal with is moving your car up and down Lexington's narrow streets and looking for nonexistent parking. read more

My wife and I got take-out from here...One of our items were spring rolls. There were two of them...two bites each per each spring roll. (9$ total) So by my math...we literally paid 2.25$ per each bite of spring roll. If they were made well and in house...I could POTENTIALLY understand paying that much, but there was more bread than filling, the only seasoning appeared to be the ginger dressing drizzled over top (which contained so much ginger it made the spring rolls slightly bitter), and as I mentioned earlier, each roll was consumed within two bites. We also ordered she-crab soup, caesar salad, and a spinach dip... The she-crab was delicious though as a lover of this variety, we were let down by the lack of crab and the many tiny pieces of shell we had to pick from our teeth. The price for it though was fair, 5.50$ for a 6-8oz portion. The Caesar salads were large for 6$, but the dressing was very strong. The spinach dip needed seasoning, and though the crostinis accompanying were well seasoned and toasted we still felt the dish was a bit of a let down. We did not try any of the sandwiches or entrees, so we cannot review these items, nor have we dined in so we cannot review the service. I would like to give this place another try, but this experience will make me second guess myself if I ever decide to eat here in the future. read more

This small Inn is just off Main Street in Lexington which is a great location. Did not stay at the Inn but had dinner in the restaurant. There were few folks there on Friday night which was a bit of a yellow light, but we were pleasantly surprised. Pleasant staff. We sat outside. Delightful crab bisque. I have dined here many times over the past several years. The food is perfectly fine as well as the service. It's not particularly innovative. Nor do they really change the menu. I'm disappointed they change the she-crab soup I enjoyed for years to a basic crab soup. It had a faint seafood flavor that was totally overwhelmed by cream. Caesar salad with grilled chicken was very good. Ravioli - not so much. It was really small and kind of lukewarm. Very slow service, outrageous prices for mediocre food. I ordered the pan seared trout with puttanesca and green beans. I made the mistake of assuming the puttanesca would be a side item of pasta. Instead the puttanesca sauce was drowning my otherwise flavorless fish. The green beans were cold. The salad was merely a plate of lettuce, no other veggies included. Bleu cheese dressing was thin and watery. My dinner companions ordered steak which was over cooked. We will not go back. read more

We stayed here for family wedding . It was perfect location center of town and close to all the cute shops and restaurants. We stayed in a suite it had a nice parlor area for entertaining guests and a refrigerator which was perfect . Our bedroom was a nice size and love the high ceilings the beds were comfortable .They offered a nice coffee station and muffins for breakfast . The staff was very friendly and accommodating . It's very clean and quaint . Unfortunately we didn't get to eat dinner at the restaurant we heard rave reviews . We look forward to our next trip to Lexington we will definitely stay here again. read more

A gem of a restaurant. I had shrimp with parmesan grits and a red pepper sauce. I'm not a native Southerner, but those grits were wonderful! Creamy and cheesy, a real treat for the gluten free. Husband's salmon was grilled perfectly, served on grilled asparagus and a rice that resembled risotto. Service was attentive but not hovering. For dessert we had key lime pie and a flourless chocolate cake that was the best I've had...light and very chocolaty, not heavy and leaden. Drinks were good too. All in all, a delightful evening. Be warned though, we went in the off season- both colleges on break. May be much harder to get a table at other times. We just walked right in at 7 on a Saturday night. read more

Don't know what's happening here. Service and food have usually been really great. But today, the place was not busy, yet we waited nearly 40 Minutes for a salad, a quesadilla and a piece of fish. And they were out of saucers for coffee cups. We actually walked out before service. And it looked like some other tables were also not getting any food. And no apology for the delay. I was making my way back home after escaping Irma and I stopped at the Sheridan Livery. I ended up staying an extra night. The accommodations were spectacular. Stayed in a suite with a balcony. Loved sitting on the balcony enjoying a glass of wine and feeling the sun on my face and the breeze blowing gently. Then had dinner in the restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed the Top Roast Tacos that were "small plate special" (half price appetizer) and a "half bottle of Chardonnay" (which really means a full, but smaller, bottle). The ambiance is great. The waitstaff friendly. And the bartender ( David) exceptionally attentive. Can't say enough nice things about this place. Both for dining and for overnight. If you're traveling this way you must absolutely stop here. In fact, make this a destination. Enjoy! read more

I stayed here Easter weekend 2016. Room and food was mediocre. But as I was leaving, I spoke to front desk clerk, Joanne to book graduation 2017 for my child. She put me on a list, wouldn't take a credit card but guaranteed me a room. She said she would call after Memorial Day to confirm. I never heard. I called the next day, left a message that was never returned. I called the next day and was told Joanne retired and there were no rooms. I explained my story, that Joanne had personally guaranteed me a room and the timeframe. The owner, Gina was rude, told me there was nothing she could do. I asked if she could help me find another room and she said, no it's not my fault. Gina then hung up on me. What a horrible way to run a business. Never stay here!!! As a local who also goes to other local restaurants, I've noticed that as the Sheridan changes things, frequently the other restaurants follow suit. Our son is a junior at W&L so we have eaten at most restaurants in town. We had dinner with our son and his friend on Saturday night and unanimously we all agreed it was one of the best dinners we have had yet in Lexington. The salmon was grilled to a crisp tenderness and the rice and grilled vegetables were flavorful and just enough to balance out the meal. Many of the restaurants in town overdo the sauces and spices, so it was nice to have a healthy meal and know with my gluten allergy I wasn't going to get sick. The tomato salad dressing was incredible. My only recommendation would be to add some carrots, black olives and a touch of onion to the salad. Two people had the shrimp and grits and raved about it. The service was fast and attentive. We would highly recommend the restaurant and plan to make a reservation for our fall trip to Lexington. read more

I guess based on some of the other reviews that some of the dishes might not be as good. I must just be really lucky! I have had at least 5 different entrees, 2 soups, the burger of course (many times) and that's just the stuff I remember. Any place can have an off night / meal or whatever but that doesn't mean you should avoid this place by any means. Your only other real choice for this quality food and atmosphere is Southern Inn or Cafe Michael which are both fine choices as well. I prefer Sheridan Livery Inn personally. My wife, family and I have probably eaten at the Sheridan Livery over 40 times since they opened at their current location years ago. The food is always excellent. The portions are generous, the service is excellent and the prices are reasonable. The menu selection from appetizers, entrees to deserts and drinks (mixed drinks, wine, beer and nonalcoholic beverages) are very varied and it is infrequent that I have seen more than one repeat main course. They serve high quality beef, seafood, poultry, pork and occasionally lamb and veal dishes. There are usually about 2 to 4 special offerings which come with one or two cooked vegetables and one cooked starch. A good example might be: Roast duck with a wine sauce, wild rice with seasonings and a prepared multi-colored vegetable mix. House made breads are served with every meal. One can also order from a wide variety of standard meals, appetizers and deserts. Deserts are always exceptional and Key Lime pie or a chocolate mousse are my favorites. The owners are so gracious and will often visit our table just to make sure that we are enjoying our meal and that we are getting good service. The dining room and separate bar area are spacious with lots of room between tables. One side of the restaurant has high ceiling to floor arched glass windows that contribute to a relaxed and "open" feeling. And, there is a beautiful circular water fountain in the center which compliments the high ceilings.
