It's not often that the place you're staying can become the destination in itself. A marathon brought me out to the area, and I was looking for a place with a kitchen and where dogs were welcome. I'm so glad I ended up staying at Fox Hill b&b, even though there were hotels closer to my race. Charlie and Julie acquired the place during the pandemic, and they're seriously killing it. Grounds. Absolutely gorgeous. The b&b is on a large stretch of land and there's plenty of small mown grass paths to explore and walk around. Mountains around, and of course close by to some legit hiking trails which I hope to hit in the future. Rooms. All I can say is that the pictures don't quite do them justice. Yes, they're quaint. I think I was expecting the rooms to "feel" older, but there were so many cute details, and everything looked new and very well kept. The bed and couch (where I may have watched like 2 hours of qvc) were comfy. They have a few rooms, two with kitchens. We got a kitchen room, and my parents got a non-kitchen room. Both with beautiful views of the grounds. The kitchen was well equipped, literally with everything that I needed (pots, saucepans, strainers, cutlery, bunch of different sized bowls/plates/mugs, etc.). There were also a lot of nice little touches, like drinks in the refrigerator that were gulped down immediately after the race or paw wipes for the dog. FOOD. This is the biggie. I've never ever ever have been to a more welcoming b&b. When I booked the room, about half a year in advance, Julie asked about dietary restrictions. I told her that we were vegan, and she asked me what type of milk I liked to drink (oat) and what I thought about vegan muffins/how I made them. I didn't think much about it because I figured she'd forget and we'd do what we always do - bring our milk, bring our food, just eat out of a can (sigh/lol). When we got there, they had bought oat milk, just egg, and had a recipe for vegan muffins for our breakfast. Breakfast was topnotch. A scramble of just egg with lots of veggies, vegan breakfast sausage, potatoes, delicious blueberry muffins, cup of fruit, and coffee with oat milk. Maybe redundant, but Charlie and Julie were also just good people. And there's some self selection it seems, because all other guests were friendly as well. Some other notes: - Dogs allowed in rooms, grounds, but not in main building (where the kitchen is). - There is an outdoor eating area if you're still uncomfortable eating inside (like my mom is). They had large heaters for the outdoor tables. - Check in between 4 - 7 p.m. They like to know when you get there because they set things up for your stay and like to welcome you in. read more

We stayed at Fox Hill for a romantic long weekend away from the city. It was exactly what we needed! The property is tucked away, quiet, and beautiful. We enjoyed walking our dog around the property to see the horses and chickens each morning. The included breakfasts were delicious, and we were given the option to chose between a sweet (think French toast and blueberry pancakes) and savory (frittatas and omelettes) option everyday. The bourbon maple bacon and the banana nut muffins were major standouts. They use fresh eggs from their chicken coop and butter from the dairy farm just down the road. Our room on the second floor was cute and cozy with an electric fireplace and bathtub. Parking is ample and there's plenty to do in nearby Lexington, VA. read more

We just came back from a perfect mountain getaway at Fox Hill B&B. The owners Julie and Charlie have a history in the hospitality industry as well as a love of the outdoors and it shows. The breakfasts were served on a large outdoor deck and were delicious as well as abundant portions. There was a choice of two main dishes each day which we appreciated. We elected one of each so we could sample both. The setting is idyllic. It is about a 20 minute drive to Lexington, but it is worth it for 38 acres of peace and quiet, horses, a well maintained natural property, and Mountain View's. read more

A not so pet friendly B&B in a beautiful country setting. Your granny's B&B. The web sit makes no mention of the restrictions that will be inflicted when you arrive at your little piece of paradise in the country with your pet. So buyer beware. A beautiful setting? True. Pet friendly? Kind of, but not really. You sign a waiver stating you won't allow your pet on ANY furniture, bedding or leave your pet in your room AT ALL, ever, not even crated. Had we known this we would not have bothered with making the trip which was out of our way, a bit more expensive and... well, you'll get the rest of the story below. So the owner informs us we can LOCK OUR PET IN THE CAR while we go in to Lexington to eat a lovely dinner at many of the fine restaurants there. Really???? Who does that? Or of course, we can load back up in the car and again she mentions we can lock our pet in the car while we go get food or go to Wal-Mart or whatever, the main point being, we cannot leave our dog at the inn for ANY REASON, in her kennel, in our room, for even 1/2 hour or 5 minutes apparently. So pet-friendly is a joke or has been ruined by some previous guests with barking dogs that have been left unattended for hours. We were also told at check-in our pet was welcome anywhere OUTSIDE, but not inside (except our room on the floor, no furniture), and that we would have to eat out on the patio or again lock our dog in the car. How is this "pet friendly?" So we had breakfast outside on the patio with our dog. This was okay because the weather was decent, but I can't imagine if it had been chilly, damp or pouring rain (as it had been shortly before we arrived the afternoon before). What then? No breakfast? Or just more "dog prison" talk from the owner? Having stayed at Bed and Breakfast Inn's all over the country and many in Europe, I can say Fox Hill's owners were friendly, breakfast was good, the room was "nice." They did bring our dog a treat at breakfast, but with all of the other restrictions and comments about locking her in the car (made more than once), this is not a "pet friendly B&B." We would not have stayed here had we known this. It was a bit out of the way, had a beautiful view and could have been special, but with the insensitive comments about locking the dog in the car over and over, it was NOT SPECIAL. Room: 3/5, typical B&B room. Bed was comfy. AC cut off at night so room was stuffy. Outside door was nice allowing privacy. Small bathtub was irritating, did not fit a normal-size adult. * Decor almost came across as grandma stuffy and prissy complete with coasters (coasters, coasters everywhere!!) It felt like you were not supposed to actually be comfortable in the room. Just look at how gorgeous it is, but don't use it or be comfy. *Outdated TV (we didn't use it but noticed it). *Has a bit of a 1980's-1990's feel, not modern. *Decor of rooms seems prissy and precious while rooms actually look like log cabin and western dude ranch. Confusing. *NOTHING about the bedding, decor or any other part of the stay made this a special or remarkable B&B. Breakfast/Foodt: 3/5, good, but again not remarkable. Nothing that sent me over the moon or made me want to ask for a recipe. *We were not welcomed with a drink upon arrival (it all felt a bit rushed), water, anything. * Brownie bites left in the room on a dish with saran wrap were ok, but again not special enough to want a recipe. * Granny McGranGran coasters everywhere!! YIKES! Felt more like a stuffy museum than a comfy B&B where I could relax. A bit too precious. *As Ryan (previous reviewer said): No coffee until 8. No breakfast until 8:30. Seems this is about the owner's convenience, not the guests. Location: 3/5, lovely, scenic, but out of the way. Considerably OFF the beaten path. We went here due to the "pet friendly" recommendation only to feel duped. The grounds are gorgeous. The house on the hill behind this one looks lovely and MORE relaxing. The paths through the pastures were nice though. Fox Hill B&B is nice, but way down on my list of B&B's. Even without the pet issues. It ranks in the lower end out of all the B&B's I've stayed in. My boyfriend and I stayed here in December 2011. To this day, we still have such fond memories of our time! Our room was large with a gas fireplace and comfortable bed. The best part? The beautiful view. Oh my goodness, the property and surrounding area is breathtaking. The property was quiet and it was such a relief coming from DC. Breakfast was delicious and the owners were super friendly and accommodating. One of the things I remember is how clean everything in the room was. That's so important to me! We went to Lexington for a day and walked around. It was nice to break up our time there with some sight seeing, but the rooms were comfortable to stay in all day. Just spent an excellent three day weekend at Fox Hill in Fairfield, VA. Set back far enough in the country to enjoy the peace and quiet of Mother Nature, yet only a short drive to civilization. The room was large and airy, with a comfortable bed and spacious private bathroom. Breakfast was absolutely delicious as well. The lands are beautifully landscaped with lots of paths to wonder around and relax. I think my favourite part was sipping my coffee, reading my Kindle, and watching the swarm of hummingbirds nearby. My only "minor" complaints - extremely slow and limited Internet access. We didn't miss it, but they should have been a bit clearer in the description. Connection via satellite, so lots of lag, slow speeds, and they are limited to 100MB day. Small 32" tv in the room. Again, we didnt miss it much, but in this day and age when you can pick up a cheap LCD for $300, it was a bit disappointing. And finally, the biggest complaint lol - no coffee provided until 8am! Partner and I are usually up by 5am, and are caffeine fiends. All in all, extremely minor complaints, and we can't wait to come back in the fall! read more

I had the lovely pleasure of staying at this cute little b&b over labor day weekend and let me tell you, it was awesome. I enjoyed it a lot. The property itself is huge! Lots of well manicured land to walk around as well as a stable with two horses and a donkey. There is an area, behind the house that one can wander about aimlessly and take in the fresh country air. You also have the mountains out in the distance for your viewing pleasure. The house: we stayed in was the merrifield room which was fine for what we needed: a comfy bed and a private bath. the room also came with a mini fridge, a small tv and a little seating area. The porch was also a great little place to hang out and have your morning cup of coffee. Rocking chairs and a view was all i could ever ask for, and Fox Hill delivered. some of the things we loved: the details! the house and room were decorated with various little trinkets and pieces that showed a lot of care and thought. From the hanging ornaments to the hooks screwed into the doors. The place was very welcoming. The owners Mark and Sue were so helpful. They knew where to go, where to eat and gave great little tips on hiking trails and places to see. She even guided me to the antique mall, which was a building full of crazy crap/treasure. The breakfasts we had were also great! Every morning it was something new. One morning they had made an egg and cheese dish and being that I hate cheese they were able to whip up something pretty quickly to help accommodate me. Hopefully you get to enjoy the poppy seed muffins. I ate 2 and tried to steal my boyfriend's..he wasn't letting that happen. The area is about 20 minutes from Lexington which is a pretty small town. A couple of restaurants and LOTS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS. the town is run with students from washington and lee/ VMI. Just don't go during labor day weekend, the town was covered with college kids and their parents....my worst nightmare. We went hiking- per sue's recommendation and it was a good thing we did. I am not a hardcore hiker but the crabtree falls trail was just right for me. Not too easy and not super difficult. I suggest you go early cause it gets kind of crowded. there is also access to water activities as well as other hiking trails. My one and only complaint- was the bathroom. It was pretty small and not a lot of counter space. I wish I saw a picture before hand. But in the grand scheme of things and the weekend it is a small complaint. They do tell guests that the WIFI is not very reliable. it was not a surprise to us considering that the area has very limited providers. TIP: If you want to know more about the place, I recommend calling them. People don't call anymore, you can never get all your questions answered on a website, so call them. They are really lovely people. Oh and again if you want to bring your pet I think you can. I saw many people with their animals running around the property. read more

My husband and I just stayed here for a three day weekend. We arrived at night and saw some deer on the property and a fox. The door and walkway were well illuminated. The owners were welcoming and very professional. Our room was very spacious- bigger than many hotel suites. The room was clean and had awesome views of the mountains. Breakfast was served at 9am and everything was delicious. The owners gave us information on the best local attractions and was available to answer all of our questions. This B&B is exquisite. The lovely, spacious rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated, and the innkeepers are fantastic. Cathy and Mike are truly the gems of this inn. Every morning, we were treated to a beautiful, three-course breakfast served by two people who truly care about their guests. My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary here, returning to the Lexington area becase we were married nearby at the House Mountain Inn. I loved the photos of the Fox Hill when my husband suggested it, but it was even more beautiful in person. Cathy and Mike were wonderful, answering every question and offering lots of suggestions to make the weekend even more memorable. They offered great service and both of them were just lovely. I surprised my boyfriend with this getaway in the valley in May, and it was exactly what we needed for a break from the city. The grounds were absolutely stunning, the food was the best I've ever had at a B&B, and the animals - including 2 dogs, an awesome cat, and a horse and donkey, were such a treat and so friendly! We stayed in the room that is nearest the kitchen, and it was the best room I've ever experienced. Modern but naturalistic. I can't wait to return again to eat Cathy's fresh picked strawberries, Mike's bourbon, maple, and cracked black pepper bacon, to enjoy the comforts of that room, and to see the amazing hills and greenery on their 35 acre property! The rickety bridge over the south river, just about 1.5 miles from their place, was a little piece of heaven. LOVED LOVED LOVED everything! read more

We wanted a quick little getaway and to enjoy some time outdoors. This place was very quaint and met all of our needs and expectations. The surrounding area is very rural, surrounded by the mountains and some fantastic hiking. We weren't too far from some popular Shenandoah hiking spots. Nearby Lexington was a fun place to get a nice dinner. The property is expansive and very scenic, especially in the mornings. This was our first B&B experience. Our room was stocked with toiletries and featured a brand new king sized bed. We had cable + HBO, Showtime, etc. The AC was controlled by us, and we had a mini fridge and plenty of space to spread out. The common space featured a great little patio with plenty of outdoor seating. Very peaceful. Mike made both breakfasts and was really excited about sharing his recipes with us--and for good reason, the food was fantastic. Seriously some of the best bacon I've ever had. They use mainly fresh ingredients from their own property (honey, corn, berries) and others from local vendors (granola, milk, eggs). One of our fellow diners was gluten free and they deftly accommodated her needs. We'd totally go back. We enjoyed chatting with Cathy and Mike about their experience running the B&B and the local area. They were very warm and knowledgeable. read more

There is absolutely no service for T mobil and I am almost sure it is just as bad for other providers as well. Make sure you plan everything ahead of time and not rely on google or yelp( since you can barely connect to network). There was wifi in the house but it was not as strong. Sue was very kind and she took the time to guide us with maps of the surrounding blue ridge attractions. read more

We absolutely loved our stay at Fox Hill. Cathy and Mike were very gracious and went above and beyond to make our stay special. I wish we were staying longer. I was not able to enjoy the breakfast due to dietary restrictions (which they graciously accommodated) but my boyfriend said it was amazing! He couldn't stop talking about the bacon and I couldn't stop drooling over the pastries! There was plenty for us to do in the town of lexington including shopping and nice restaurants. We really enjoyed hiking Crabtree Falls with our dog. We will definitely be back! read more

The gluten free muffins and brown sugar bacon were delicious. Our room was large, quiet and warm (gas fireplace - so good!). My wife and I had a great escape this weekend with our two dogs. The check in process was quick and easy, Cathy was very informative, and they have assembled an information binder in each room with local events, attractions, restaurants, etc. They are very knowledgeable about local events, and things to do. We stayed in the Cornwall suite, and found it spacious, comfortable, and well appointed. The B&B and rooms were well kept and very clean. The grounds are very nice, with Mountain Views. The dogs are very welcome, with homemade treats, extra dog towels, and the grounds are very conducive to play and run the pups. Leashes are required, but they have cut paths and a large field into a cornfield, leaving a great place for the dogs to run off leash. Breakfast is a highlight here, with home cured bacon, fresh fruits, and fresh baked goods. This b&b is kid free, a great option for those looking for peace and quiet. We loved this policy! We look forward to our return trips! read more

My boyfriend, dog, and I booked Fox Hill as an unexpected stop on a road trip from NYC to South Carolina last summer (August 2012). We thought it'd be nice to spend some time in the Shenandoah Valley before we head back north and I'm so glad we did. We had been stayed at many pet-friendly locations (hotels, motels, inns, b&bs, etc.) all along the east coast but this really took the cake. This place is really unbelievably beautiful. When we let her off the leash to run around, my usually playful hound dog just sat in awe of the scenery instead. I felt bad only because I couldn't help thinking, this is where dogs belong! The room was adorable and very clean. And the atmosphere is private, peaceful and calm. The reviewer who had mentioned it's not so pet friendly must not have been to many pet-friendly bed and breakfasts because almost all of them have the same exact policy. We definitely have thoughts of going back there again! read more

We celebrated our 3-year wedding anniversary at Fox Hill B&B in May 2017 - what a great decision we made! Fox Hill is by far the best B&B we have ever experienced in all of our many travels & we would highly recommend it. We stayed in the lovely Devon room on the ground floor - the room was cozy, spacious, beautifully decorated, extremely clean & well-maintained. Cathy & Mike, the owners, are delightful! They are warm, friendly & just phenomenal at creating the perfect ambiance for a restful getaway especially for city-dwellers like ourselves! They went above & beyond to make our stay the best possible. We especially enjoyed the special, homemade, farm-to-table, 3-course breakfasts that Cathy & Mike prepared with great care. Their signature maple bourbon bacon was amazing! They were particularly attentive to my gluten allergy & prepared gluten-free waffles, etc. for me, which I greatly appreciated. We enjoyed the idyllic setting - the fields with trails all-around were beautiful as was the little pond. We had a great time visiting our resident barnyard neighbors, Cody (the horse) & LoveBug (the donkey). Fox Hill is also closely situated to the mountains so we were easily able to hit the trails and go hiking during the day. We also liked Fox Hill's convenient location in between Lexington and Staunton. In the evenings, we were able to easily drive to either Lexington or Staunton for a wonderful dinner and stroll through the town. We will definitely be back here again! read more

We just left Fox Hill this morning and stayed for 1 night on our way from Boston to TN for Christmas. It was fantastic. The grounds of the property are immaculate and well kept with horse stables and walking trails (especially convenient since we had our dog with us). We stayed in the Devon on the first floor and the room was very clean, cozy and comfortable. Very much a rural farm B&B. Sue was wonderful and extremely friendly when we arrived. She knew we would be missing breakfast so she left muffins and a to-go bag for us in our room. Great property at Fox Hill. read more
