I am naturally a darker blonde, and I usually just stick with platinum highlights a couple times a year to lighten my face. Deciding I "needed" something new, I got a wild hair, and went straight for a cheap box of bleach at CVS. Needless to say, after very restless night, I wound up in this nice salon. I tried several other places in Walnut Creek, but they all told me I was out of luck, and that I'd have to deal until their next opening. I could NOT settle for later. The 12 hours I spent looking like a clown put a crick in my neck; I even shamefully threw on my husbands ball cap. Anyway, enough ranting.. Almost in tears, I called Turquoise, and the owner confidently told me she would see me at 1pm. Her last words before she hung up, "Ah, that's my specialty!" Talk about instant relief!! I called at 10am and she had me in by 1pm., not because she wasn't busy, but because she had a special event to go to that night. She STAYED AFTER to fix my mop!!!!!! I arrived embarrassed, and still shamefully wearing my husbands ball cap. I was almost in tears once again just trying to explain myself. I told her "Just make it all brown, just do it." She could tell I was passionate about my blonde, so she swayed my opinion to a brown base with subtle blonde highlights. She did it this way to avoid any more damage, and so I could keep some blonde. I thought I was in over my head... An hour and a half later she finished! After she dries my hair I can't contain myself!!! I leave with my ball cap in my purse, and a smile on my face! After reading some rather positive yelp reviews, I was intrigued. I called to ask about men's haircuts and their availability. They had an opening that afternoon which was my preference and they were very friendly. Upon my arrival I was taken aback at how small the place was but that was countered by glowing smiles and Nilla informing me she had been cutting hair for over 30 years! I have been told by so many salons that I have difficult hair and they some how think that warrants a crappy haircut: I disagree.. Therefore, I typically I offer up a word of caution to anyone about to embark on the trial/test that is my hair and let them know if they are worried or concerned do NOT cut my hair. To give you an idea, I have a double cowlick in back and one on the front right. Of course.. my hair doesn't stop there.. it is also about as straight and fine as hair gets.. Nilla was unfazed... Moment of truth: Nilla did a very good job! I recommend you check out Turquoise if you want a great haircut in addition to being around kind people. They also had a yelp discount for new customers which saved me 5$! The price of 40$ (pre-tip) was typical of what I pay elsewhere and the quality surpassed the majority. My typical haircut is simple, easy to understand and I have been getting it done at an upscale Salon for years, however I heard very good things about Mawash and for a better price I said I would give it a try. I told her about the style I wanted in very simple to understand English, with emphasis on not going above my ears, but she did just that. All the while I told her specifically NOT to do that but she kept saying she has an eye for this and continued to cut shorter. When all was said and done, I took her word that it looked good. But after not one, but several bad comments, I became increasingly irritated so I called her the very next day and asked her to do something about it. She insisted I didn't know how to style my own hair. So she asked me to come in and she'll blow dry my hair out and by some miracle she could change my mind. The place is small and off the main street a bit. I was surprised it was there. I probably passed by it many times and didn't even think about it. I really needed a change in my hair. I was so sick of my hair I was going to cut it myself. I decided not to do this, naturally. I found them and I gotta say, it was great. Mahwash was amazing. She took a look at the do I wanted, advised me of problems I may have with it, and when I gave her the go, she was a flurry of scissors. The first thing I have to say is that Mawash is a total professional. She is always ready when I get there, and the few times she's been behind are because the previous client ran late. She takes pride in her work and her shop, and she sincerely cares about her clients. She's incredibly sweet, totally accommodating, and if something isn't quite right when you get home, she's always willing to have you come back in so she can get whatever it is just right, at no extra charge of course. I've been going to Mawash for almost two years now for my highlights and cuts. I am naturally a dark blonde/ light brown and really wanted a more natural blonde look. I hadn't had my hair professionally touched in several years because every time I had, the stylists didn't listen to what I wanted or completely messed up. ANYWAYS, I decided it was time for a change. My hair was super long (which I didn't want to change) and finally all one length after years of growing out my awful self-done layers. I found this salon on yelp and saw that Mahwash had great reviews, so I made an appt with her. She's super friendly and I felt like I could trust her with my hair. She listened to what I wanted and did exactly what I asked for, which was great. She gave me some subtle layers and maybe one inch off my length. It looks AMAZING I'm obsessed! I was almost worried that it would be difficult to blow dry and style myself but I just did for the first time and it looks great!!
