The man who sold me this pair of Hoka One One is perhaps the most vivacious, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and happy person I have ever met in a shoe store. He is the antithesis of Al Bundy. I have been hiking my entire vacation out here in Portland, clocking something like 40 miles in five days. (don't judge if you're a big-time hiker. I'm just getting started. I need time for tattoos, meeting my cousin for the first time, and other vacation type stuff) anyway the point is my feet are tired. Hoka is to feet what Visine is to a stoner's eyes. So I went in there. This guy was like a super happy positive ant lion. There was no possible way I was leaving without a pair of shoes, less I endure the sight of his bright smile faltering for just one second. And I don't regret it. But there's more. You see I missed my flight this morning because of a delay and the airline had to reschedule it all, and comp me a hotel room near this shopping mall. So instead of going home today, I'm stuck next to 20 acres of retail, which thankfully includes bars. Four margaritas in, I'm wandering around again and I see him walking a couple out. Each has the exact same bag that I had, with the same blue box emblazoned with the same brand. They are praising him for his knowledge and thanking him for the $600 they just dropped. Corporate, if you're reading this, this dude is regional manager material. I wanted to slap him high five, and yell, "Bro! Hoka! F@&k yeah!!" But that seemed like it would be a lot. And none of those three had been drinking margaritas all day. Anyway, point is, buy some shoes here.

But I need walking shoes for an upcoming trip, so I tried Shoe Mill. It was a pleasant surprise to find they still use "old-fashioned" approach here. Instead of slinging boxes at me and leaving me to sort it out, the salesperson, Susan, helped me through the entire visit. She listened to what I needed and was very knowledgeable about the shoes and proper fit. It took 10-12 pairs to find what I was looking for and she was upbeat and kind the whole time, while also helping several other customers. I ended up with two pairs of walking shoes that are not only comfortable, but super cute! Best shoe shopping experience I've had in years and I'm actually looking forward to my next visit.

I wasn't going to leave without spending 150 bucks on a new pair and decided on a baby blue suede with large silver buckles option. Once I got back to California, I realized that the sales person neglected to tell me my foot required the standard foot bed (which shoes I purchased were definitely not). There are two types of foot beds in the Birkenstock brand, one for wider feet (standard) and one for slim feet. I didn't think that Birkenstocks made uncomfortable shoes, but discovered that wasn't the case once I wore my new pair for the day. My feet were KILLING me because they were too skinny for my feet. I got blisters too so, talk about AGGRO! I was really bummed because it's not like I could drive back to Portland to return or exchange them for a pair that fit properly. The only bonus to purchasing at this store was the obvious, no tax. Other than that I'm pretty pissed that I got such an uncomfortable pair of shoes. They were fine when I tried them on around the store, but, wearing them for an entire day was a different story. The sales people should be required to tell customers what their two options are before customers drop their dough on a new pair of shoes. Giant Grrrr.

When we realized the style was discontinued, he didn't stop there--he went the extra mile to check the main warehouse for any remaining stock. Although they were unavailable, Isak spent a significant amount of time discussing numerous comparable alternatives with me. What impressed me most was that even when it became clear I wouldn't be making a purchase that day, Isak remained incredibly kind and patient. Additionally, Isak suggested contacting their flagship store, Gimre's, which is right in my hometown of Astoria, saving me the long trip from the coast to Tigard. They have straight, loose, wide, flare and barrel styles. and opted for a pair of high waist, slightly wide leg jeans that fit perfectly. Love that they offer petite, regular and tall inseams. Hate having to spend $30 to hem jeans and this saves the cost and trouble. Of course the have more than jeans. The store was stocked with sweaters, tops, jackets, and more. For parking, I drive down Westover and parked in the free garage right before Petco Unleashed. Levys is right next store so it's super convenient.

I found parking around the corner which was a bit of a surprise. Parking off of 23rd can often be challenging. As I entered, I was created by the security guard with a hello and welcome to the store. This location always has security which I'm not surprised with the on-going homeless problems that Portland has been facing. The store was clean, well organized and not to busy, which was nice. They were also having a 60% off sale on a good amount of items. I resisted and stayed focused on my original goal - confirming if the trucker Jean jacket was the right size or if I wanted to go up a size. The woman who assisted me looked both on line and throughout the store for a size up, but unfortunately Levi's was sold out of the jacket. She took the time however to offer alternative styles and discussed that she would ensure I new any cost adjustments should I decide on a different style. After trying on several other Jean jacket styles in a medium, it was clear a size medium was way too big. I tried my original jacket back on and both the woman who had been helping me so kindly as well as the other woman working did a fit on my jacket (perfect on the shoulders, etc). I decided to keep the one I had gotten. I want to say thank you to the two woman working here today. They were both very kind, helpful and just genuinely nice and pleasant. This Zumiez had some great things. I love that their sales racks are actually organized. The women's rack is separate from the men's completely, which helps with any confusion. I'd definitely visit this place again.
