The speciality rolls ordered through DoorDash were the HUNNY roll ($20) and INDY-ANA JONES & THE TEMPURA OF THE DOOM roll ($24). They were not good unfortunately. And what really made it worse is they served old black avocado. Nobody wants a roll that's mainly covered in avocado to be black. Parking is, well, you know, a total cluster fuck here, especially as a spring weekend is starting. Sure enough, we landed a spot pretty far away, but it afforded the opportunity to walk on the seawall and visit the snoozing Sea Lions. Eventually, we made our way back to the restaurant and requested to sit inside. The staff were nice and the service was excellent. The food came out at an even pace, which was nice. The table never felt crowded with empty plates. All the rolls were excellent and expertly assembled. The sauces were also unique, not your typical variety. I was in the area so decided to check out their happy hour. Parking is always pretty busy in this area, but I found residential parking. The servers were all very friendly and welcoming! The restaurant itself is pretty small, but we got there around 4:15pm and were seated right away. Food review: -Edamame: bland with salt and some undercooked. -Crispy rice: delicious and super flavorful. Loved the tempura, worth a try. -Gyoza: cooked well, soft w/ the right amount of crisp. -Negitoro and Salmon handroll: both delicious and great for $5. I prefer the negitoro over salmon. -The prospect roll: interesting flavors, the oil was a nice touch. Not a fan of the spicy tuna here. If you're in the area, definitely give the happy hour a try. Decent sushi spot in beautiful, downtown La Jolla. They were open on Christmas Day. Friends and I passed about half an hour before opening. We returned a bit after 30-mins passed and the restaurant was almost full, which is expected since they were one of the only establishments open. Prior to being seated, the young gentleman advised service may be slow as they are short staffed. Indeed, the food came out slower than we would've liked. The slower service was balanced out with the delicious food we received: - Vegetable egg rolls - Agedashi Tofu - Tofu Geisha Roll - Hunny Roll - Cucumber Roll - Avocado Roll My Hunny Roll was a 4.5/5 - delicious! My friend and I swapped one of my Sunny for their Tofu Geisha Roll and it was also delicious. Someone in our party is vegan, so they ordered the cucumber and avocado rolls. Our main complaint for those: overpriced for the veggie rolls. In other words--do not come to a sushi spot for basic or vegetable rolls; it's highway robbery. Our appetizers were also great (vegetable egg rolls and agedashi tofu). They both came out piping hot and were perfect to share. Yes, service was slow. If it was not for (most of) the food being delicious, I would have docked another star. Ambient is casual. It is a smaller restaurant, so keep in mind if you have a larger party (parties of 4+). Friends and I did not realize this until the day after, but they accidentally charged us for one more Hunny roll (we only ordered 1 of each). It took some time to get a hold of someone; I left a voicemail and had to call a few times. However, once I was able to speak to someone, they were super nice and apologetic, and completed the refund right then and there.
