I came with a group of friends and shared some rolls and chef's specials. We got the tokusen nigiri and the chef's choice nigiri. A great variety to share and the fish was very fresh and flavorful. Then we got the salmon jalapeño roll (delicious!), the double double tuna roll (my favorite) and the black pepper scallop (also good). I would say I wasn't full when we finished and the price is higher than normal so take that into consideration. Other than that, we had a great experience.

It's been a while since I've had sushi ota but thats was take out and during covid. So was excited to dine in person! We had reservations for 5 at 7:45pm. Highly recommend getting a reservation. The place gets pretty busy. But even though they were busy the service was fast and friendly. The parking lot is pretty small but we got lucky and got a spot. Would definitely plan accordingly. The food was amazing! Probably the best sushi I've had in SD! We got 3 rolls: Black Pepper Scalop, Jalapeno Salmon and the Double Double Spicy Tuna. And the chef's choice and Tokusen Nigiri. I love tuna so the Double Double was my favorite, so much high quality tuna in each bite! But literally everything was good. They also had specialty items on the white board on the wall. So I will definitely try some of those next time.

Finally introduced my child to my favorite sushi spot by the sushi bar. This is classic sushi spot with clean deco. Basically ordered almost everything on the specials board since they source fresh local ingredients and from Japan. Chef's sashimi was awesome with the live spot prawn sashimi and nigiri. We had the heads two ways, fried and with miso. Amazing umami flavor. Finally got to try the limited mirugai, giant clam, that was out a few times. It's sweet and yummy easily my child's favorite together with the scallops and bluefin tuna. I'm glad to celebrate this occasion and introduce my child to the chefs. Very attentive service and on point individualized chef. Year over year my trusted spot outside of Japan.

Made a reservation for a Thursday night through OpenTable and it was so convenient! We arrived and found parking outside in the small lot right outside the restaurant. We ordered: -Ota B: comes with sashimi, grilled salmon, scallop deluxe, seaweed salad, steamed spinach, shrimp tempura, miso soup and rice. This is a great option if you want a mix of warm and cold Japanese food. -Chef choice nigiri: which includes 12 pieces of sushi -fried calamari: this was only ok, the calamari was not as crispy as I would have liked. I would skip this next time. Always a great restaurant, with fresh fish.

This San Diego favorite restaurant for consistently high quality sushi was again packed with satisfied customers. We came here for lunch and reservations are recommended even for lunch. The staff was courteous and fast. We loved it. The restaurant is very clean and welcoming for a great sushi experience. It felt like being in a high end restaurant in Japan. The nigiri sushi was some of the best and freshest I ever tasted. We had the double tuna roll, scallops jalapeno roll and snow crab California roll. Everything was outstanding and made with lots of special care. The sushi chefs here are high end experts. I see why sushi ota is a San Diego favorite.

The sashimi was incredibly fresh--each piece practically melted in your mouth and showcased the quality and care behind every cut. One can truly taste the difference. We highly recommend the Chef's Choice sashimi and nigiri. The sweet shrimp was exceptionally fresh--so much so that its legs were still moving when it was served. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring our drinks were refilled and checking in at just the right moments. Everything made it a pleasant dining experience. It is a small restaurant so reservations is a must. Although small, we never felt cramped.

Unfortunately had a below average experience with this restaurant. We came for lunch on a weekday. Got sat promptly. Service was standard and attentive. We ordered three rolls- crunch shrimp, salmon jalapeno, and double tuna. The crunch shrimp was the only one appealing. Unfortunately the squishy & slimy texture of the raw scallops was unappetizing. Along with how puréed the filling was for the tuna roll. The top of the tuna roll also did not look appetizing. Texture-wise it was not appealing or tolerable. We did not eat much of our meal. Maybe we just ordered the wrong things but I don't plan on coming again.

This is some of the best sushi I've ever had in my life... In California. I cannot wait to come here again This unassuming sushi restaurant in a mini strip mall in North PB is one of the best sushi restaurants in San Diego and wow, the sushi holds up When you walk in, it is so clean and beautiful with the nicest servers, staff and incredibly trained sushi artisans

Top 3 in San Diego for sure and they're not number two or three...service is great and the best quality of fish in the city hands down

Been here before but never for lunch until today and, my goodness, the lunch special sushi is to die for! For $16 lunch special, I got the nigiri and noodle soup with a choice between noodle or miso soup. The nigiri consist of super fresh salmon, tuna, yellowtail, eel, shrimp and two California rolls. My partner got the chicken teriyaki and miso, and the portions for the chicken were phenomenal. I did call ahead to reserve a spot in 15 minutes, and luckily they still had some tables open because it was packed in there. It was calm and nice inside with everyone inside. Besides coming here for special evenings, I could also casually come here for lunch!

My husband made a reservation to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary. Wow time flies! We dined on a Saturday evening right when they opened at 5pm. Spots in the restaurant started filling up quickly! We asked to be moved to the bar seating and the host agreed. We opted for omakase for the both of us. It was fun watching the chef prepare our meal and our 3rd time having omakase. We started off with a snow crab filled cabbage roll topped with unagi, some beet and onions sauce, and gobo fried chips. It was interesting with all the different textures in my mouth. The snow crab was fresh but the roll was not my favorite. Next was the sashimi plate with lobster because it's in season, black snapper, uni, blue fin tuna snapper. It was fresh and imported from all different parts like Japan, Greece, and some were locally caught in San Diego. I would definitely come back for more of the black snapper. It was the perfect texture and had no fishy smell or taste. Next on the menu was lobster with some stir fried onions and mushrooms and some creamy sauce. I think it might have been shoyu and mayo. It was a bit tough understanding our chef but he engaged with us and made small talk. I was just fascinated watching him create all the rolls and dishes being sent to the tables. Next on the menu was tempura. There was tempura shrimp with some rice crispy balls coated in it, kabocha, and fish, and mushrooms. There was matcha salt on the side and we lightly dipped it in the matcha 3 salt. The tempura shrimp was light and crispy and shrimp was perfectly cooked. Kabocha had a nice bite but was still tender. The fish and mushroom was quickly devoured but rest assured it was delicious. After the tempura round, we had 3 pieces of nigiri and then lobster miso soup, and the other 3 pieces of nigiri. It was lobster, which was surprisingly chewy, and then 2 other types of white fish I forgot. I stopped taking notes and just indulged myself. Hehe. The lobster miso soup has incredible depth of flavor. Who knew miso soup could be elevated? The lobster taste was very prominent and added to the salty broth. After the soup, I attempted to eat some of the legs with little success. It really hit the spot because I was starting to get full. But I knew I had to push on! Back to the nigiri: tuna, uni wrapped in hamachi (my favorite) and lastly more tuna. I can't remember what type or where the tuna was from but trust, it was bomb. Lastly we finished off the meal with ice cream!! We had to choose from red bean, black sesame, or yuzu. I opted for red bean and my husband got yuzu. I wish I had got the yuzu. It was bright and flavorful packed so much flavor. The red bean was still good and had pieces of red bean throughout however. It was the perfect palette cleanser. Who doesn't love ending the meal with ice cream. The omakase was so worth it. Definitely pricey at $140/pp but great for special occasions. Make reservations ahead of time. The quality of ingredients and fish is fresh and they use ingredients that are in season. Maybe I'll return in another 5 years for our 10 year anniversary but realistically sooner than that.

Deeeelightful! Omg, insert mouthwatering emoji plus a happy food dance! My friend brought me here she made a reservation on a Thursday at 1130 and it was needed! People are LINING up immediately ! She mentioned they can turn you away without a reZ or give you a limited time to eat. So be safe and make the reservation. Parking is also very limited so plan ahead for that. Place smelt a little fishy coming in but oh my gosh the sushi is mouth watering, my mouth bursting with flavor especially with belly sampler. The ginger the served felt so fresh! So juicy and delicious, I couldn't stop eating. I'm going to dream About this place and absolutely recommend ! It feels like a typical sushi restaurant, decent seating, clean restrooms

I had no idea how busy this place gets for an understated place in a strip mall. I showed up without a reservation for a party of 4 for dinner and got a little nervous when they said they normally don't take walk-ins, but they were able to seat us relatively quickly, which I really appreciated. The food was amazing. The Diego roll and Albacore Sunrise were excellent. The Jalapeno salmon was also a big hit with our table. Loved the sushi here.

Ask the Community - Sushi Ota

    Are kids allowed?

Yes, but they don't have high chairs (as of mid August 2025)

    Are reservations necessary?

Yes. I have been turned away without them!

Do they have gluten free food? How about gluten free soup sauce?

Lots of gf food options. Not sure on the sauce.

Does Sushi Ota sell salmon cut rolls? Not spicy salmon roll, not salmon skin roll, not salmon hand roll. Just plain salmon roll?

It isn't on the menu ! I'm sure they will do it.

I heard the quality suffered after Covid. Is this true?

It is still awesome. Fresh fish is like produce - some times some items will be better than other times, but they seem to purchase quality products so while my favorite nigiri of the night will vary, I have not had any that was poor quality.

Trying to call for the past week, getting a message that the number does not have a voice mail setup. are they closed?

They close for about 3 hours in the afternoon. Check yelp. The restaurant is open

    How much is the omakase?

I think we paid around $140 each.

    Is this restaurant Kid friendly?

This restaurant doesn’t provide high chairs or a kids menu. It’s a refined, chef-driven tasting experience in a calm, intimate setting, so it’s generally better suited for adults or older children who can enjoy that format.

    Are reservations suggested for lunch?

Yes. The place is nor big and so if you walk in you may wait for a long time.

Hi, do you take reservation? I can't seem to find you online. Do you have any availability for 3 people tomorrow at 6:30pm?

Do you offer a sushi making class?

No.... Why would they. You should look on etsy or something

Hi, Do you have private dining room for party of 6?

    No.

Is the bar open for Omakase/dine-in?

Yes and it is the prime seating location.

Do they have premium quality? Do they use real crab or just imitation crab?

I would imagine real... unless it's a California roll. This place is very Japanese and authentic. I doubt they do anything outside the Japanese norm.

Is Omakase available at the bar now?

As of 4/9/2022, they do not have sushi bar service. You can still order the omakase at the tables though.

    Is Sushi Ota Japanese owned?

    Yes

Is this restaurant dog friendly 🐕?

    It is not

How do I make a reservation?

Is omakze in front of the chef?

I had debated whether to reserve upstairs or downstairs and ultimately chose upstairs and I was happy with that decision for the two of us, as it was a bit more relaxing and I liked the decor. There was however, a large table of about 8 people in the center of the room that were quite noisy. Downstairs definitely had a more 'hustle bustle' atmosphere with large booths and a long sushi bar. (There is also some outdoor 'Covid' style seating). We ordered sake, a couple of sushi rolls and negiri. They were kind enough to supply a complimentary birthday ice-cream dessert with a candle. Service was very attentive and as we passed the sushi bar on the way out, staff behind the bar waived goodbye. The theme of Sushi MARU is truly attention to detail, and that extends from arrival, to service, to, of course, the food. Staff were incredibly attentive and easy to talk to, including the chefs. The food, I will comment on just generally as the menu is constantly changing (as is the case with many omakase): each dish was composed of pieces that complemented each other well and created a cohesive flavor pallette. Each nigiri was artfully prepared that emphased the quality and cut of the fish, and were complemented by flavors to further highlight that. The flow of the evening was non-traditional omakase, but it felt perfect. Price ($180pp) is not for the faint of heart, but is cheaper than others I've seen. Unlike other omakase restaurants, Soichi offers their full vs petite vs nigiri only omakases at variable times (not limited to 2 seating times like others). You can also enjoy any of these omakases or order a la carte or both at the tables and outside patio also. The ambiance is bright and full of energy. For dessert, they had 4 flavors of homemade ice cream to pick from. The sesame was incredible and the roasted green tea really good too. I feel like most of the omakase I've been to have 2-3 seating for dinner, so all the customers for that time arrive at the same time and everyone is at the same point of the omakase. At Soichi, it seems like each party has their reservation at a different time (4:30, 4:45, 5:00, etc.) so each group is at a different part of their meal, not to mention some parties that ordered a la carte or a different omakase menu (sushi only option, etc.) As a result, the chef is bouncing around working on a bunch of different items, and we had to wait quite a bit for each of our nigiri courses. The whole meal took 2.5 hours. We also felt less of that group vibe with other parties that is common in other omakases. Overall, we still had a really lovely time and glad we got to try it!,

**5:30pm Omakase seating with Nigiri**…read more My dear friend and I came here for dinner on Monday night to enjoy Ichifuji's summer menu. Everything was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. All of the fish is high-quality, and most of it is imported from Japan. They do also source fantastic shrimp and uni from San Diego at times. Both sushi chefs are super personable, very skilled, and they have rad knife skills! Service from the waitstaff was attentive yet unobtrusive. The restaurant is diminutive and consists primarily of the sushi bar with 10 seats and an attached patio dining area. They do have a small parking lot which is appreciated! The pacing was just right, and each course was presented simply yet beautifully. I truly enjoyed this experience and give it my highest possible accolades! I loved that we were able to taste test three different sakes before choosing, and the carafe of sake was perfect for two of us to enjoy with our meal. It was also fun to choose our own special sake cup/glass from Ichifuji's eclectic collection for the evening I truly enjoyed all of the 19!! courses but the chilled chawanmushi, king salmon & all the nigiri were my favorites. When you come to Ichifuji, know that you are getting a very authentic Japanese dining experience. This is the real deal! Another fun thing that Ichifuji does is they give you a punchcard, and once you've tried all four seasonal menus, you will receive a special gift from Japan. Arigato gozaimasu!

All delicious and wish I could've gotten seconds! - Sashimi: Chef's selection of 4 different sashimi with a side of seaweed. I enjoyed them all but my favorite are the toro and amaebi. Love that they also fried the shrimp head and gave us a choice of salt & lemon or ponzu sauce to pair with it! - Yakimono: Grilled cod with asparagus, crispy fried lotus root, and goji berries. The cod was so buttery and cooked to perfection. - Nigiri: 9 piece nigiri chef's selection. All were super fresh, melts in your mouth, and of course delicious! - Uni wrap: I'm not sure if this was part of the nigiri or its own course, but chef let us try San Diego Uni & Hokkaido Uni! Both incredibly yummy. I feel like the SD Uni has a nice sweetness while the Hokkaido Uni has a slight bitterness. My group mostly liked the Hokkaido Uni. - Chawanmushi: Very flavorful and silky as I think they added dashi to enhance the egg. - Soup: Red miso clam soup (Nagoya style) was delicious. Super comforting and savory to end the course out before dessert. - Dessert: Hojicha Panna Cotta with strawberries! I usually don't like the desserts at most omakases, but I loved this! Great balance of light sweetness of the Panna Cotta with the sweet and acidity from the strawberries. [Service] - Friendly, charming, attentive, helpful - Shoutout to our Chef, Hiro-San & server Ken-San for making sure our experience was beyond amazing! Thank you! [Ambiance] - Classy, upscale, intimate - Has sushi bar & patio seating [Overall] - Made reservations for a party of 6 for my bf's bday and they definitely made it special! I love that they took pics for us with the chefs and even gave us a print out with a stand. So cute! - Would definitely come back for the food, vibes, and great service! - Each season they have a different menu, if you had all 4 on your stamp card, you'd receive a little gift! I definitely would love to try all 4 seasons but unfortunately I don't live around the area.

There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

We ordered takeout, and the food was packaged well!…read more We ordered the: -Sashimi champloo ($31.95): This had twelve pieces of prime cuts of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and chef's choice. Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.
