We were a party of four. We ordered chicken breast teriyaki, tako sumono, sashimi combo , hotate and some rolls. Our dishes came with miso soup, which was good. The tako in the sumono was good and not chewy. My rolls were just average overpriced. Chicken teriyaki was very good. The restaurant only had one other couple eating when we were there, but it was early in the day. I think I would come back. read more

This place is a hidden gem in Stanwood. One of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever eaten at. We started with edamame which was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of sea salt added to bring out the flavor. The miso soup was light and refreshing. The Seattle Tempura was a knock out. A salmon roll with a light tempura fried topping. So good dipped in their high quality soy sauce. The California roll was excellent. Then we tried the special salmon sushi on rice. I usually don't care for so much raw fish, but this was delicious. So fresh! So light! We can't wait to go back again this week. They also have a selection of wine, Japanese beer, and saki. Waitstaff was extremely helpful. The decor is intimate and relaxing. Easy parking in the back with a back entrance. read more

Pretty frustrating experience of waiting over an hour for no food, until we asked for the bill for the drinks and left. They hadn't even started cooking our food at that point, and while a bit apologetic didn't comp any drinks and basically gave us the bill and were ready for us to leave. It seemed like multiple other tables were also experiencing the same long wait times with no food. We had a similar experience there a bit ago and decided to try it again, but unfortunately after this second time we won't be back. read more

Lettuce wraps were 10/10 Sushi was really good. I am giving it 4 stars just because in relation to other sushi in Seattle it's not jaw dropping, but I would say it's the best sushi in the Stanwood/ marysville/ Arlington/ camano island area. Surprisingly on a Tuesday night there were a good handful of people, but not enough to where we had to wait for seating. The food is on point and fantastic. We have the same wait staff both ladies are great. We always go during a time we know they won't be slammed. Like any other business today, if they are short staffed it's not their fault. Good luck finding good and reliable workers. Again, familiar faces when we go and it's great. Our favorite spot in town. The staff are friendly, responsive and the food is fresh, full of flavor and reasonably priced. They are generally busy but if you do have to wait it is not more than 15 mins. We truly love going there and have become regulars. Even if you do not live in Stanwood it is worth the trip to get sushi and experience Shima's. If you do not like sushi their Udon and Chicken Teriyaki is amazing too. read more

I've been here twice now. The sushi is amazing! Lots of different options. Everything is so vibrant and fresh! Chicken Yakisoba is delicious as well. I took my mom in during my second visit and she wants to go back soon! Not pictures but a repeat for us is the White Tiger Roll. I was worried it would be spicy, but they seeded the jalapeños and sliced them thinly on top. It wasn't spicy at all. A very yummy bite! read more

The best sushi north of Seattle. They get super busy, so be prepared to wait! It's worth the wait though. The fish and other menu items were super fresh. The spicy it a is actually spicy too. I loved that, because when I go out for sushi, the spicy tuna is not usually spicy, which drives me crazy. I loved the lettuce wraps. It was very different, but tasty and filling. The poke roll was our favorite. The California rolls were good too and my daughters teriyaki chicken was delicious. We all had to try a bite to see how it tasted. Other items we got were the volcano roll and the salmon skin hand roll. Both great choices but the salmon skin hand roll was soo good. $8 for one roll, but boy was it salty and flippin amazing. I'll get two next time. We found our new sushi spot! read more

Was looking for a great place for dinner to catchup with family in the area and Shima did not disappoint! The jalapeno yellowtail and lion king rolls were highlights, as well as the simplicity of the fresh toro nigiri. Definitely a gem of a place in Stanwood. If you want to experience Japanese sushi and sashimi without going to Japan, then go to Anacortes and try DE Sushi. I have traveled to Japan over 40 times and this sushi restaurant is the best one in Skagit Valley. Give them a try, you won't regret it. read more

Was there for the first time last night. We read the reviews and our expectations were high. Add in we're from a big city back east, so we're used to quality sushi. Plus as w professional cook, I can be particular about my food in general. Shima exceeded our expectations on every level. Our waiter was great, perfect service. Sake was great, sushi was fresh and reasonably priced. The gyoza was amazing and I really liked the dipping sauce. The miso was very good too. Needless to say they will be seeing a lot more of us in the future. read more

What a diamond in the rough, the original owner operated a fancy sushari (new word I just invented) "Retired" in small town Stanwood and then decided he couldn't handle that hard retirement life and opened Shima. Eventually, actually retired. Passed the torch to his next generation we'll call this more of a sushi dynasty than a restaurant and they haven't missed a beat. This is one of the best sushi places in all of the state. Come up to stanwood and give it a try as it will be worth the drive. The waitstaff is wonderful and the owners are great. The only reason I hesitate to review this restaurant is because I don't want so many people to show up and then I can't get in for dinner;) Atmosphere is clean and friendly - come check this place out! read more

Then, one random weeknight, we headed to Barley & Brew in Sedro Woolley to see a comedy show, and there was Karuma. Score! At the time, I was recovering from a tummy bug, and didn't want to eat raw fish yet, so I ordered a California Roll and got a beeper to await my order. 45 minutes later... it was ready. And...it was delish. Not to mention HUGE! I couldn't even finish it. Since they're new, I'll give them grace on the long wait and hard-to-findness. Each specialty roll included 10 pieces and they all contained a generous amount of filling with a relatively thin rice layer, making the average price of $18 - $19 per roll worth the value. + TAKOYAKI ($7.50): These deep-fried dumplings had a soft creamy interior and housed a small piece of tender octopus. Four pieces came in an order, topped with mayo, unagi sauce and bonito flakes. I loved the crispy exterior and they were served steaming hot. I am not sure they were made in-house or frozen, but they were delicious. + KOUSHI ROLL ($17.99): A crab, avocado and cucumber roll topped with cajun seared salmon, spicy mayo, unagi sauce, green onion and fish roe. This place gets an extra star because my original server did come over and sincerely apologize for the issues with the food. Nevertheless, it is not a place I would come back to. Maybe best left to the locals.

This place just may turn me into a sushi lover. I am working on acquiring a taste for sushi, so take this review with that in mind. I have had it prior to this experience though and just have always found it kind of bland, but people keep telling me "you just haven't had good sushi yet". So, I keep trying it and I think they have been right. My mom wanted to go here for her birthday in September, so I took her. We told the very friendly waitress that we are sushi novices and working on acquiring the taste for sushi and would love it if she could suggest some stuff. She suggested a few items, including Monkey Brains. We ended up getting a mixture of sushi, California rolls and started with Monkey Brains. It was all incredible! The fish was super good and fresh and you have to try Monkey Brains! I honestly cannot emphasize that enough. It is so good and full of flavor! So, if you are beginner at sushi, come here! Sincerely appreciate the Shima staff creating sets of beautiful platters for my mother's Celebration of Life memorial this past May. Hidden gem in Stanwood. Try the lettuce wraps to start, they're amazing. The Camano roll and Dynamaite roll were my favorites. Really can't go wrong with anything. Make sure to read the specials board for new sushi/roll as they always change. Yong and Dan are the two chefs and they know how to make sushi at a affordable price. read more
