You can sit at the bar or one of the few tables (really more like a booth) but I prefer the tables so you can see everything and also enjoy all the tableside service options. They have a tableside hand roll service which I LOVE. To be fair, I love table side anything. The hand roll is so fresh and delicious with fish flown in from Japan (SO YOU KNOW IT'S THE GOOD STUFF) and of course, the nori is nice and crispy. The entrance was quite hidden I had trouble finding it... but once I got in I was transported into the deep undersea. It was very much octopus themed, I really liked the varied blue toned couches and counters. There was a central bar seating around a curved bar in the center, but my friend and I were seated in one of the couches on the side. There were a LOT of very unique drinks, but I was opting for something lighter that night. There was a fried chicken drink that I really wanted to test out, but made the mistake of ordering a mezcal drink that unfortunately turned out to not be as light as I wanted. Still good though. The Little Gem Okonomiyaki was one tiny cabbage wedge with bonito flakes and some mayo on top. It was $26 and definitely not what I expected, it wasn't a pancake, didn't taste cooked through, just mostly raw cabbage. The mushroom rice bowl? $30 and SO small, super salty, and nothing special. I wish the menu had more descriptions of the food and drinks so people know what they're ordering. What even was that okonomiyaki? Also, don't go by the prices listed on their website. When we got there, the physical menu had noticeably higher prices. Service was a bit off. They gave us complimentary tea, but the waiter spilled some on the table and didn't pour evenly for everyone. When we mentioned it (since the place is super dark), he seemed kind of annoyed. Then they rushed us off the table after just one hour, I thought we had more time. My boyfriend and I sat at the bar which we loved because we get to converse with the bartender. Our bartender/server was great his name is Miguel ! Wow I was mind blown by how unique yet strong the drinks are! I'm usually very picky with my cocktails and consider myself a cocktail connoisseur. A good drink to me is a tasteful drink that packs a strong punch. Shinji's drinks were all that and more, because the presentation of the drinks were also . They use dry ice to make the drink, and it makes the drink 10 times more cool. Here are the drinks we ordered: 1. Honeypenny- their take on vesper, and the most spirit forward drink they have. It is so much better than the vesper, and definitely strong 2. Tropicana- their specialty drink is the frozen orange/ballon. It tasted like juice, I literally drank it so fast, cuz it was thay good 3. Hot toddy: this drink was so unique. They used chemistry to keep half of the drink warm and half of it cold, so when you drink it, you can simultaneously feel both of the sensation. Apparently the only other bar that does this was a Michelin 3 star restaurant in London. 4. Soba cha cha cha- this was a vodka old fashioned that is paired with a pineapple made out of soba sprinkled with salt. I wouldn't say the salty soba goes well with the sweetish drink per say, but the drink was very tasty in its own. 5. Dirtiest martini- better than your typical martini, but not as good as the other drinks I mentioned above. 6. Jackie tree horn- don't remember much about this tbh. Maybe bc it wasn't super memorable. In these inflation times, cocktails have quietly risen to $20+ at most specialty spots with little change in quality or quantity. Shinji's is a good example of this. My Shiso Mojito ($25) lacked any discernible shiso flavor. The $30 Tropicana was better, but...it's $30. You could buy five boxes of orange-flavored Creamsicles for that price, let them melt, and get far more of the same thing. The Naked and Almost Famous was probably the best of the bunch, which isn't saying much. Our $11 chips (yes, $11) were, well, not worth $11, IMO, but at least we got a free refill? Service was nice, and the tableside shaking and mixing is a nice change of pace, but if I'm going to blow $25+ on an artisan cocktail, this won't be the spot. read more

Ok, I know this places hasn't gotten a lot of love in their reviews, but honestly, I really enjoyed Shinji's. Are their drinks expensive? Yes, they're all $28-40 a piece. But you're paying for the experience, with good quality ingredients, and I truly thought the drinks I had were well made. I started with the Shoba Cha Cha Cha, which is a vodka based old fashioned. It was very good! Not sweet, and had hints of coconut in it. It comes with a little pineapple-shaped thing to nibble on in between sips. That was interesting and reminded of some rice-meal something I'd had before. The edible part wasn't bad but overall I didn't love it. My next drink was the Jackie Treehorn. It's this creamy drink with coconut milk (I think?). I really enjoyed it! The service was good. Our bartender was friendly, and explained each drink that we had. I loved that each drink had its own glass and even own coaster. I enjoyed my experience here. It's definitely not somewhere that you'd frequent often just given their price range and relatively limited menu. With top notch drinks and theatrical service, I truly enjoyed the cocktail experience at Shinji's. It's a very intimate space with only 18 seats, and we almost missed it walking past, with blacked out windows and a nondescript door that almost looks like a vacant storefront. But after tentatively opening the door, the vibrant, extravagantly decorated bar was certainly not what I expected on this unassuming block of Flatiron. The service here was impeccable, and all the drinks were made tableside, several with dry ice as part of the process. The mojito and Tropicana (served in a frozen orange) were both excellent, as was the Naked And Almost Famous. The Hot Cold Toddy shot was also very interesting, with cold on one side and hot on the other. All-in-all, I'd definitely come back here for both the spectacular service and the interesting cocktails. The music was too loud and did not create an ambiance for a cocktail lounge. The service was only mediocre as it was very difficult getting our waiter's attention even though the bar was tiny. There are only four small tables that fit only a few people and a bar. If you have a group of more than 4 people there is barely any space to sit. I was honestly skeptical at first due to the poor reviews recently but now that I have experienced it myself, this is not a surprise at all that Shinji's has been dropping in consistently on the rankings of World's best bars. Jonathan or Jon the bar director is honestly so full of himself and treats every single customer judgmentally. He gets upset at the littlest things and also pressures the customers to leave early if they're only ordering drinks. I literally couldn't care less how good your cocktails are which they're not and completely overpriced. A simple cocktail going over $30 is ridiculous even in New York City. I would be glad to pay that if the service was right, but they should honestly reconsider Jon as their director if they're trying to prosper and keep up with other great bars in New York City. Stopped by Shinji's on a trip to NYC and was blown away. I was hesitant before going due to the mixed reviews on here, but those were put to rest. I came in with the expectation that Shinji's is at a high price point, and with that in mind, the experience was wonderful. The space is intimate and gorgeous, with only a few tables it feels cozy and comfortable and we even had a nice chat with our neighbors. Started the night with the Tropicana cocktail - my absolute favorite! It's such a creative drink and nothing I had seen before. The nostalgic title and wonderful taste made it a delicious drink. Ended up ordering another. Also, the Jackie Treehorn came with fun table-side pouring! We had the steak tartare and hand rolls, which were all wonderful, and surprisingly filling for their relatively small size. With delicious food, fun cocktails, and excellent service, I will definitely be coming back. Our servers John and Marc were so kind and knowledgeable and our time there was one to cherish. I was there for a special occasion and were given free shots (and even though I dislike tequila usually, they tasted amazing)! Some of the best service I've experienced in NYC. Unreasonable hospitality to be sure (Will Guidara). First - I called, got VM, hung up, and the host/manager called me back to apologize for missing the call, asking if I needed anything. I showed up not realizing how busy or "hot spot" the place is. They went out of their way to accommodate me at the corner of the bar where there were usually no guests. Then the drinks and service and explanation from the bartenders...all were so thoughtful and detailed. For the record - they're doing some of the most innovative cocktails in NYC from what I've been able see. Most were tasty - the Ramos Fizz is crazy....mind bending how they do it - but flavor was lacking. Best cocktail I've had in a few months was their take on a Vesper. Food is where it needs a little help. The hand rolls are well executed but missing salt / soy. The rice bowl with mushrooms had great texture but needed a lot of salt. The added pork belly was forgotten - came late - and was just ok. Chips and caviar are a home run (as anything with great caviar should be). The dashi chips are stellar - great concept. There is the small bar with the octopus over it, and literally THREE tables. Their Resy makes no mention of this. I got the Dirtiest Martini ($30) and it was unlike any other martini I have had - along with the bartender chilling the glass with dry ice and then tossing it against the bar wall for all the smoke to dissipate. They serve it with a type of powder that you're supposed to lick before drinking it, which had some Szechuan peppers that numbed my tongue and a drop of olive oil in the cocktail. From walk in, I was super impressed by the decor and customer service experience from the sweet guys at the door. I booked a table which was a bit cramped and they were nice enough to move us to the bar when it freed up. Bobbi was an amazing bartender with showmanship but also care in recommending drinks.
