Not a large downstairs or upstairs but it is a cozy spot like a comfortable living room (i.e., not swanky nor too modern). Should be in a cocktail bars rotation if one cannot be a regular. A reservation is highly suggested though you might be able to walk-in if just a couple people. We got lucky and snagged reservations at Martiny's and absolutely loved it. The house is beautiful inside and out, though it's a small space, which probably explains why reservations are so hard to get. The staff was fantastic and did an amazing job walking us through the menu and explaining the flavor profiles of the cocktails. One thing to note: there is a time limit for your reservation and they do enforce it, so just be mindful of that when planning your visit. We tried four cocktails: the Porcini Risotto, Grand Martiny's, Tea Ceremony, and the Olive Oil Vesper. Watching the bartenders work was a gem in itself they're clearly masters of their craft. Every cocktail was unique and very well executed. I definitely recommend ordering a variety to experience different flavors. My personal favorite was the Olive Oil Vesper. The real surprise, though, was the food -- wow. While it's on the pricey side and the portions are small, every single bite was delicious. It's probably not the place for a full dinner unless you're ready to spend quite a bit, but I wouldn't skip on the food. It's perfect to share as a snack alongside the cocktails. My husband booked this bar in our NYC trip, as it was World's Top 100 bars - #75 in 2025. Fun to try. Definitely make a reservation here! We tried coming early for our reservation, didn't get in - it's just tiny, but a nicely intimate setting. The only drink I really remember ordering here was my husband's Caprese, which tasted exactly like a Caprese! It had the tomato and basil notes on point. I excitedly got a Martini, I believe it was a Pandan one, but I can't remember what it tasted like. I remember thinking my martinis weren't that strong. However, by the end of the evening, I was quite tipsy before our dinner. What I do remember was the service, and the ambiance. Once we got sat, it went downhill. We had a few different waiters coming to our table throughout the night and one of them messed up part of our order. Then another waiter tells us the kitchen closes at 10:45, but our order wasn't even taken until 10:55?? When we tried to figure out what was going on we got sent to two different people who both said they couldn't help, and finally a manager came and told us the kitchen actually closes at 11. So which is it lol. Feels like they either don't know their own hours or just wanted us out. There's also a $50 per person minimum, and because of the kitchen thing we couldn't order enough food to hit it, which was annoying since some of us weren't even drinking. Bill came out to $310 and we left a $35 tip (about 10%) which honestly was still more than they deserved after all that. As we're leaving, a waiter literally follows us outside to ask why the tip was only 10%. Like... maybe reflect on the last 2 hours? You don't get a low tip for no reason. I had three drinks here. Two were misses and one was great. For a place known for its cocktails, I thought it was disappointing. Not to mention they forgot one of my food orders. The only drinks my friend and I liked were Olive and Honey and Blue cheese Sake martini. Unique and clean. Blue cheese sake martini was more savory, not overly salty. Olive and honey was on the sweeter side but not overpowering. I also had the risotto drink and the Grand Martiny's. Risotto was on their seasonal menu, supposedly had truffle on it. Martiny's has been on my bucket list for a minute. It was actually recommended by a bartender at The Bees Knees in Kyoto. On a Monday night, we swung by around 9 PM. This intimate, very dimly-lit bar with a capacity of possibly 25 people on the main level was full. We were put on the waiting list and grabbed cocktails around the corner at L'Americana (coincidentally, under common ownership with Martiny's). L'Americana's cocktails are excellent by the way! (try the Porcini Fashioned). 30 minutes later, I received a text that our table was ready at Martiny's. The hostess was kind and patient. We were provided hot face towels and menus. Our server provided excellent descriptions of the flavor profiles of cocktails. The bartender mixologists - Tomo and Miguel - were dressed smartly with bowties, and mixed cocktails fluidly while John Coltrane and Stan Getz played softly in the background. I tried the "Tea Ceremony" (a whiskey cocktail), a "Grand Martiny's" (a beautiful ruby-colored martini riff), and a "Potter's Old-Fashioned" (using brown butter-washed Maker's Mark 46) All three cocktails were impeccable. I don't mind paying $20 to $30 for a cocktail for this superb level of quality and presentation. Overall, I highly recommend Martiny's for fellow craft cocktail afficionados. read more

We were chatting about cocktail bars with our wonderful server here and she asked about our faves in the city...honestly? It genuinely might be Martiny's after this visit. Everything from the drinks to the food to the service to the sleek-yet-cozy space was top-notch. We sat downstairs at the bar, but I took a peek at the lounge area upstairs, which was very inviting and reminded me of someone's (wears 'quiet luxury', regularly hosts jazz listening parties) living room. Cocktails: -Orangettini (earl grey-infused gin, Grand Marnier, Lillet, cacao, peychaud's bitters, orange): this was described to me as a dessert-style martini, but I found it to be just a little sweet and really balanced overall. The expressed orange peel added a really nice orange essence. The cacao was subtle, similar to how it's used in a 20th century cocktail. -Tea Ceremony (bourbon, cacao, matcha, coconut water): harmonious flavors and high-quality ingredients. The interplay of the matcha with the cacao and coconut is hard to describe but it's almost like you can taste the flavors all coming up to meet one another, if that makes sense. The matcha did overpower a bit at the bottom of the drink. This one was pricier than most of the other cocktails ($30), so I don't know if I would get it again. -Fig & coffee (mezcal, fig, Mr. Black coffee liqueur, kokuto [Japanese brown sugar], espresso, chocolate bitters): an espresso martini riff, and a strong candidate for the best in the city. A really rich, sumptuous liquid dessert. The addition of the fig made the drink taste even richer. Bites: -Burrata (yuba chips, nori, Lao gan ma, smoked trout roe)- the salty umami-ness of this dish completely transformed the burrata from its kinda tired preparation of tomato-olive oil-balsamic. One of the best dishes I've tried in a while. -Scallop (bonito cream, grapes, fennel, pickled daikon): Fantastic. Each bite was creamy, savory, and smoky. Also sweet and tangy. Definitely an odd combination of ingredients, but it worked. -Scotch (Japanese) eggs (Tsukune sausage, Ajitama egg, yakitore tare): Another winner. The smoky pork and that uber-crunchy crust are classic, but the savory-sweet sauce (a mixture of soy, mirin, and rice wine) made this memorable. -Karaage with caviar (karaage, caviar, cream cheese): I remember this being good and crunchy! The townhouse that it is in is cozy with an upstairs and a downstairs. Reservations are highly recommended. If you sit downstairs, the space is ADA friendly as well as the bathroom. I had the Maia cocktail and the Caprese cocktail. My favorite was the Caprese as it was sweet without being over powering. My friend had a martini and the Risotto cocktail which was so savory with white truffle. The downsides are a $50 per person minimum and a menu that lacks substantial vegetarian food options. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, please have a full meal before coming here. There's a tomato dish offered but it has gelatin on top. There are really good corn fritters but make sure to get them served without the roe butter. They are served with egg yolk shredded on top however. The staff is highly attentive, though sometimes to a little bit of a control freak mode. They open up at 6, and don't let you wait in the vestibule before they open, so they had us waiting outside in the street with 3 minutes to opening. There's a sidewalk shed up right now thankfully, otherwise we would have been standing out in the pouring rain. I put my food dish on top of the menu that I had been reading, and a server came by and removed the dish and placed it back on the table for me. Just weird little quirky things that seem like control issues here. I'm grateful the bartender gave me a warning that the tea ceremony martiny is whisky forward and strong which is not my type of drink. I was here for Christmas drinks with some friends, and our experience was great. Friends arrived before we did and were seated promptly upstairs. They provided towels for our hands and gave us time to look at the menu. Quick tip - the menu on each floor is slightly different! But once inside I realized - YOU SHOULD WAIT - because it is demonstrative of the fact that they are protective and in complete control of the experience inside. When you walk into the bar there's a jazzy and sophisticated yet cozy Japanese prohibition vibe. The staff work their asssssses off and you can tell. The bartenders are about their business - drinks are made PERFECTLY and with a consistency that I rarely experience. I like going upstairs (it gives rich grandma vibes) but I prefer the bar. Drinking alone here is a must do and this is my reason. The staff here understand the art of bartending on a deep level. The bar staff exemplify the Japanese idea of "omotenashi". This martini focused cocktail bar deserves the accolades of #24 in the Top 50 Best Bars in the World List 2025. Even before they got this award, I had this place bookmarked from a friend. Reservations are hard to get especially for 1, but I was glad to catch up with a friend so I got a last minute reservation for a post dinner drink session on a Monday evening. You get 1 hr 45 min to enjoy the experience, since the tables with turnover are 2 hour slots, so I assume 15 min is for them to complete the transaction and clean the table for the next party. I wasn't a fan of $50 per person minimum spend, but if you're not bar hopping and just want to take it easy and focus on one bar for the night, it's absolutely reasonable since 2 drinks per person will easily hit the minimum. We tried the following cocktails, all of which were hits 1. Mole Granada - I love egg white cocktails and this was a creative one. There is some sort of salty rim that's not salt and they also have cacao on top of one half of the drink that allows you to experience the cocktail 2 different ones. The mole flavor is apparent and well balanced 2. New York New York - New York is famed as "Big Apple" so this drink has elements of apple. As it's a dessert cocktail, they say this drinks like an apple pie. I loved how this egg white cocktail is torched on top for added flavor and meringue like texture. This feels similar to the grandma's apple pie drink at SG Club I tried in Tokyo, bringing back memories 3. Grand Martiny's - I typically don't like to order a typical martini since while I like spirit forward, I don't like the lemon or olive garnish that comes with it. This bar's take on martini is still spirit forward, but drinks like sherry instead of straight up liquor. Slow sips of this drink satisfied me throughout a nice catch up session 4. Tea Ceremony - the way the matcha and bourbon is mixed is perfectly balanced with the right ratios. Simple in ingredients but they executed this well. I liked the shiso leaf flower that is not just a garnish but actually tastes like shiso leaf, enhancing the flavor of the drink at some points. No complaints aside from a steep $30 price tag Service is good as they constantly refill water for you and check up on you. What I assume was the owner of the bar is friendly and sarcastic in a good way, loosening up the vibe of the bar that has a dimly lit, formal, otherwise misinterpreted as stiff ambience. Whenever I travel I try to check out bars on the Top 100 Bars list! I've been lucky enough to try a couple in NYC, but this last visit (with enough advanced planning) I was able to score a reservation at Martiny's! When we arrived we were our seats weren't quite ready (no problem - we were 10 minutes early) so we waited outside. In those 10-15 minutes several groups popped in wanting to get a seat but they were full for the night so folks were mostly leaving after hearing how long the potential wait would be. Once we hit our reservation time we were seated at the bar and reminded of our maximum time. The bartenders were moving quickly to fufill the many orders. It was non stop from the moment we sat down until we left. Luckily a front row seat meant you could see which things looked appealing while also reviewing the menu. They started me off with I think the Maia (swapped with tequila) and then Three Little Words. Both were very good and refreshing! I guess we should've gotten a martini but we were pleased with the drinks we did have! The one missing star is mostly for the way our experience ended. We were asked to leave our seats 15 minutes early to accomodate another group. We respect that their our reservation times, but being rushed at the end before our official time was up wasn't great. We were constantly reminded we had until 10 pm, but at 9:45 they were pushing us out as a large group stood behind us. We waited outside until beyond our reservation time for our table so that was a turn to actually lose a few minutes up front and a chunk at the end. Why is that when I go to nice bars, there is always a dish that I adore and want to recreate but was not even the purpose of my visit! Had reservations for a night here with 2 friends and had a really pleasant time. There is a crispy crunch from the small bite sized ball of sweet corn that is perfectly shaped. It is heaven in a ball. I wish I could remake it. The ricotta and tomato dishes were also pretty good. I was looking forward to the ricotta more, but I actually ended up liking the tomato more! It was so refreshing, not too watery or plain. Actually quite nice. Slight acidic tang very mildly which added an extra layer with the cool refreshing taste. After ordering half the menu, we couldn't get enough of the beautiful plates and potables of perfection. The smooth cognac in the Grand Martiny tickled the palate with its merry notes of cherry and mischief. A cocktail bar on the World's Best Bars list run by an Angel's Share alum? Yeah, there's gonna be a line outside. Fortunately, my friend and I planned a few weeks ahead and made a reservation for the bar. We tried: + Grand Martiny's + Olive & honey vesper + Plum blossom sour + Passion punch The martini and vesper were perfect, and I loved the passion punch as well. The menu is huge and there were tons of drinks that I'd love to try in the future. 5 stars for the drinks alone. The thing that keeps this from being an overall perfect 5 stars for me, though, is the time limit - we barely had enough time to gulp two rounds. (Other reviewers have pointed this out, too, so just be aware before you go.) Service was fantastic and they were kind about the limit, but at these prices, I don't want to be rushed. TLDR: It's considered one of the best cocktail bars in North America for good reason. If you can snag a reservation, the beverage program here is executed really at the highest level. Tea Ceremony if you like an old fashioned, if you like Asian-palette cocktails (refreshing not too sweet) the Maia. If you want to know what this place is about, grab the Caprese. Don't forget some bar bites too. My wife knew I wanted to try Martiny's and fortunately snagged us a reservation. We were sat at the bar with Ethan and Phillip who were both awesome hosts. We went a bit crazy but it was a great time. We started with the Caprese and Maia. The Caprese reminds you of just that - a Caprese salad. It's refreshing, very tasty and easy to drink. The Maia had a tropical flavor, a bit of sourness, I could probably drink multiples of these. We ended up trying the Tea Ceremony, which is kind of like a matcha old fashioned. Wife got a seasonal mezcal drink which was very tasty and somewhat divided in half for two drinking experiences. The last two drinks were ridiculously good. The Olive & Honey Vesper which finished really nicely, while still being quite a stiff drink. The subtle honey and the yogurt finish. Wife got the Passion Punch. Passionfruit, tropical, just overall insanely yummy. Food-wise, we got the Scotch Egg which was like a Japanese take on the classic. Delicately fried, a chicken/fish meatball like mixture with the egg and topped with yakitori sauce. The karaage with caviar was good but quite HOT. Juicy chicken, dashi cream cheese and a nice dollop of caviar. The wagyu tartare was very unique, with parmagiano reggiano and salted seaweed. It can get pricey but you are getting drinks where the craftsmanship is Olympian-like (since it's going on now) talent. Yelp I totally came here bc I saw it on World's Best Bars List (#4 in North America for 2024). Kudos to the owner for being at the helm of Angels Share previously, a cocktail bar I wanted to try but sadly did not have the chance. Loves: + Good cocktails. I can't remember names of the ones we had except The Caprese. + Cute space. I would have loved to sit upstairs near the window but hopefully another day. + I forgot the dish exactly (no menu online) but they had like a chicken caviar app that was SO good. The main things I'd note to people are: - Drinks are pricier than most cocktail bars. I'd say average is $25-32. - They do not allow standing room which is tough if you haven't finished your drink. I highly recommend you asking the staff how much time you have before you start a 2nd or 3rd round. Overall, it was a nice time and happy I got to check this place out. read more

Ranked #4 for North America's 50 Best Bars in 2024. If you love martinis, this is your home. Yes, the drinks are going to be expensive because it's NYC. You're also paying for innovative and well crafted cocktails. I highly recommend getting the Kaluga Caviar / Mini Martini pairing for $30. I really am surprised at the number of negative reviews. As one whose one of her favorite bars was Angel's Share back in the early to mid 2000's I truly appreciate the gem that this bar is. You really need a reservation to come here, even for the bar seats I gather, so my friend and I showed up at 5:45 on a Saturday evening (as a walk in). By 6pm when they opened, there was about 8 ppl on line. Milagros the hoses/server, came out and had us stand on a separate line for those without reservations. There were 4 of us total. We waited maybe 5 minutes and were escorted in to a high top table and were told that we had to vacate by 7:45 which was fine by us. The cocktails are expensive, there's only so many we could drink, and we had dinner plans. As was Angel's share, the ambiance was great. dim lighting, cozy exposed brick walls, and jazz was playing. A.S. was one of my favorite date spots (even though you had to share a both with strangers), and Martiny's would be great for one too. The music isn't loud, and since it's mainly reservation only, no one was standing around and possibly interrupting conversation by ordering a drink between 2 ppl sitting at the bar (which I hate). The drinks were good, I had the olive and honey and an espresso martini (off menu). The only negative is the pricing and the sizes of the drinks (small). read more

Date of Visit: 3/18/2024 Martiny's is a well-renowned cocktail lounge located in the Union Square/Gramercy area, that was established by Takuma Watanabe, who was a former cocktail director at Angel's Share. Martiny's is a three stories cottage style building, with an intimate atmosphere and Japanese style cocktail and decoration. Orangettini $26 I ordered the Orangettini with a slice of chocolate orange on the side. This glass is made from Earl Grey infused gin, Lillet, Cocoa and bitters. Crisp and refreshing. Tea Ceremony $30 The matcha style tea ceremony is one of the most popular cocktails. Made with bourbon, coconut water and matcha, the tea flavor was not too strong but with a hint of freshness. Grand Martiny's $26 We ordered another martiny for the second round. The Grand Martiny's was made from Broadway Sapphire Premier Gin, Sherry, 2016 Porto, St Germain, Cognac and grapes.
