We ordered 2 appetizers, a bento box and 5 absolutely delicious rolls for a family dinner. Fresh fish, real crab, delicious sauces, well rolled! So very yummy! For the appetizers the Gyoza was a little more cooked than we prefer but the tempura shrimp was delicious! We got the 3 item Bento with California roll, Teriyaki Chicken & Yakisoba Beef--it also came with a salad, Miso, Rice & 2 Gyoza. It was also great. Ordered a bento box for lunch pick up. Food was ready fast. Huge portions for a bento box! I got California rolls, which were decent, shrimp tempura rolls which were pretty good too. It also came with miso soup and salad, and chicken teriyaki. I had more then enough food for lunch and dinner. Food was good. Not great sushi, but good enough. Environment was nice. I ran in and ran out, but it looked clean and stylish. It was fairly full for a Saturday afternoon as well. The staff all greeted me with smiles when I entered. I travel all over the planet including Japan, and Sushi is always my go to food. Shinsei provided great attention to detail (the fact that I love Salmon) and made some great pieces. The Sashimi was smooth and fresh, and the rolls had just the right consistency and texture. I will definitely come here again when I am in Medford. It's good sushi for southern Oregon. The price of rolls are way overpriced. But they're competitive with all the other local places in town.... Don't waste your time ordering anything other than sushi. We bought a teriyaki chicken plate and some yakisoba noodles for the kid... my teriyaki plate was small, like really small. $15 for what is essentially a scoop of white rice and maybe 1 chicken breast. The kids "yakisoba" (if you can call it that) was $9. It was literally nothing but noodles, no vegetables, no meat, no sauce, just noodles... Some serious price gouging on the non sushi items. Leaving 3 stars because it is tasty, the prices are just ridiculous. I won't be going back it's good but really no better than most of the other sushi places in town. read more

I go out to eat with my 12-year-old daughter and she writes the review. We went during the lunch rush and they did not have any regular seated. I sat at the sushi bar for the first time. I have been here a few times with my mom but first with my dad. It was kind sitting with our backs tot he servers. First they had fancy chop sticks. They offered me a fork like I needed one. I have been using chop sticks since I was about 4. The miso soup was yummy. It was even better than usual because it was a stormy day. Always better on a stormy day. Would have liked more seaweed and tofu but again it was yummy. The sushi chefs had some serious Japanese stoasism. Their hats did look like boats but not the sushi boat my dad got. He said it was good and had real crab. I got the adult bento box and my day it was going going to be to much food. I did not realize he just wanted left overs. It was yummy. The chicken was thighs and cooked just right. The gyros were just right with crunchy but not too crunchy. Did not touch the salad. Forgot to ask for no dressing. Rice was not quite as sticky as I would like but delightful. Servers were nice and quick. Definitely will go back. They are a solid 4.5 so I rounded to a 5. Love this place! The food is always delicious and the service is great. The restaurant is clean and so are the bathrooms! I usually get sushi but decided to try the ramen this time. It was really good! Im pretty picky about my ramen and this passed my test . I got the pork ramen and the broth is really rich. The noodles are perfectly cooked and the veggies weren't over done. I know, I'm the jerk that gave less stars than everyone else, but I am doing so because I've only been once, and I wasn't blown away like everyone else. However, I will say that this place has TONS of potential, and excellent prices. In all honestly, it's a 3.5-star place right this moment (IMO). The place is very, very small, which I would think is kind of counterproductive for a sushi place...especially here in the valley. Sushi is a very popular food choice when dining out, and good sushi is about as common here as snow is in Mexico. Okay, I'm exaggerating, of course, but you know what I mean. The Fiance and I stopped in with the intention of getting one roll each, just to test the place out. It was very crowded, yet not noisy. That was good. We got the LAST table, a small two-seater by the kitchen. I couldn't hang my coat on my chair without getting the girl sitting behind me, but that could also be because she seemed very intent on letting me know that she was NOT trying to share her space with anyone or anything lol. The selection of rolls is decent, but the menu is a bit confusing. They abbreviate a lot, and I constantly had to refer to the "abbreviation key" at the bottom of the menu to see what "STM" and "CU" and "US" stood for (hey, some of you may think I'm an idiot, but I have ADD and can barely remember my own age half the time). We zeroed in on the crispy rolls because they're priced incredibly well, and sounded amazing. We got the Sun River, Medford and Smokey Vegas rolls; the Sun River is a "traditional" roll, rolled in rice and not baked or fried. The Medford and Smokey Vegas rolls are both battered and fried. Sun River- I did not try this one, as The Fiance ordered it and he was starving. He said it tasted good, but was very loosely rolled. I could see that myself; it was kind of falling apart before he even picked it up. However, this did not bother him too much. A former sushi chef and server, he said that the person who prepared the rolls may be "new" at it, and that they would probably improve over time. It's a new restaurant, so maybe he's right. Medford- (Deep-fried, spicy tuna mix, avocado, spicy mayo and unagi sauce): Not bad. The fish tasted fresh and the flavor was good. However, the roll was slightly cold and soft for a "deep fried" roll. I was expecting hot and crispy. That was the only downside to this roll. Smokey Vegas- (Deep-fried, smoked salon, cream cheese, avocado and unagi sauce): This was DELICIOUS. Again, the only downside was the fact that it was soft and cold, not crispy. Had this not been the case, I probably would have given this place a solid 4.5 stars. The semi-complicated menu and space issue aren't a huge deal, but they are the reason I'd knock off a 1/2 star. All in all, not a bad spot. Fairly extensive menu, great prices and fresh fish are all great reasons to go :) read more

We tried this place because of there reviews on yelp and were not disappointed. We got the edamame and pork Gyoza as appetizers. The gyoza was deep fried and delicious. We both ordered crispy rolls (the super crispy and the double crispy) again delicious. My husband also order salmon eggs because he'll try anything once. I passed. We also got a free mochi dessert for checking in here on yelp. It was real chocolate ice cream wrapped in a rice paper. It was an interesting chewy texture but still good. read more

I'm sorry to leave one star but there is a young man with long dark hair who didn't care to tell us that there was a waiting list to write our name onto and instead told us to wait. We waited for around 20 minutes and someone walked in and was seated before us as a result. There was zero communication that there was people already in line for the restaurant and it felt as though we did not matter. We left as soon as we found out we were going to be there longer than anticipated. Young man- get it together. We have seen this place perform much better without this kind of carelessness. stopped in early on a Sunday evening. good crowd for the day and time. always want to see a busy sushi spot, as you can imagine that there is a fair amount of turnover, and that the food is reasonably fresh. I was somewhat guarded given other reviews, but was ready to give the place a fair shot. finding a restaurant in Medford that I'd visit a second time is a rare occurrence, and this definitely qualifies in my book. first impression. nice curb appeal. I'm an architect, so space is important to me. as some other reviewers have mentioned, the entry is a bit tight, but as it was not extremely busy when I visited, this was not necessarily a problem. I was shown to a fairly comfortable two-top on the sushi bar side of the restaurant. the division seems a bit strange as the wait staff have to cross back and forth through the entry area. space was a nicely finished and very modern. nicely lit as well. even with all of the tables occupied, it was not too loud. a real problem with other Medford restaurants. the menu is a bit confusing consisting of four pieces - a beverage menu, a hard menu, a sushi menu on a single card, and a specials menu, also on a card... seemed like things could be condensed for ease of use. well. mr long winded architect... how was the food? I ordered a gyoza and siumai appetizer. a little greasy, and the siumai were definitely from frozen, and deep fried instead of steamed. the gyoza were better, but again a little greasy. seems like the oil probably needed to be a bit hotter. I ordered a spicy roll - the fantastic roll. unfortunately the jalapeño was without heat. the spicy tuna could have used a bit more kick. it was well prepared, however and quite tasty anyway. you can never rely on chiles for consistent heat, especially at this time of the year. the wait staff was very friendly and polite. knowledgable about the menu as well. I heard them helping several other patrons through the extensive menu. quite expertly I might add. in addition, I think the prices are very reasonable. I left stuffed for just under $20 with a soft drink. I little more than your average Medford meal, but certainly reasonable given the quality of the food, service, and environment. one quibble. I'm very sensitive to the smell of bleach and the sanitizer used in restaurants. the towels the servers used to clean up reeked of the stuff. I appreciate a clean place, but it can be off putting. it gave me a terrific headache. read more

There are still a couple of newer sushi places in the area that I haven't yet tried, so I don't have a perfect basis for comparison, but this place is the best I've found so far. Decent prices for rolls. Fast service. Fish isn't old. Miso soup is pretty good too. The sake flights are a nice addition and are quite interesting. There are even a number of options, with and without tempura, for those who prefer to remain meatless. All in all, a great place. I've never had to wait but it does get busy on weekend evenings. read more

Sushi was top-notch fresh, with very unique veggies in the veggie roll....well done! Very light and tasty miso, nice and hot even after delivery. Overall, A+ for what I've had in this Valley! My boyfriend and I don't know a lot about sake, so the waiter brought us out several to taste and gave very knowledgeable suggestions and information about each of them. So I stopped in during a shopping trip to Trader Joe's to get a roll to go. Being a new customer to any sushi spot, I always check out a non-raw option on a first visit, so I got a Spider Roll. The fellow that I spoke to was new and in training, but another person quickly showed him how to put the to-go order in the system. She said it would be about 10 minutes (it was less) and I walked out with a roll that was well presented (even in the to-go box) and it contained everything one would need to eat it, from soy sauce to the napkins. I didn't have to ask for anything. Honestly it was the best Spider Roll I've eaten. And I've eaten a few. The veggies were fresh and crispy and the crab was hot and flavorful. I made yummy noises through the whole thing! I'm looking forward to going back and exploring the menu. I wrote the above last August and I've had a couple of excellent sushi meals there since. However, I was disappointed when I returned this last week with a friend. He ordered the teriyaki chicken. I had a roll on the specials menu, which was as usual very good. However his chicken was tasteless and tough as leather. It was a thin cut and for some reason was served on a sizzling platter with bell peppers and onions - yeah - like a fajita with teriyaki sauce on it. That last sizzle apparently turned it into uneatable (I did taste it btw). The house salad which came with his meal was "unusual" for a Japanese restaurant. It was mixed greens, not very well torn as he was wrestling with large pieces of some of the greens. It also had a lot of raw broccoli which could have used a quick steam to gain some flavor. Smokey philly roll, shrimp tempura roll, and spider roll -- all were delicious, a little small, but the prices were reasonable. Seaweed salad was refreshing. Service was fine. This place is a very solid restaurant with dependable fresh sushi that, generally speaking, done right. However the quality has been somewhat inconsistent lately. I do not feel this is a COVID related issue. I think it's a kitchen issue and mostly during lunch service. Sometimes dishes can come out "picture perfect". Just like the best photos on this page. Other times, the fish looks incorrectly cut and as if what is being served is being culled from scraps of trimmings. Such was the case at my lunch today. The Ahi Poke that I have enjoyed so much, today was dry and looked shredded or torn. No clean knife cuts to be found anywhere. It so affected the texture, and therefore the flavor of the fish. The lack of Poke sauce was also detrimental as there was nothing to season the overall plate. I asked for more sauce, I got rice vinegar. Again, inconsistent. The service is generally good and friendly. So, it's gotta be lack of formal training in the kitchen or lack of experience. Perhaps since most of my experience is with lunch service, maybe ownership feels that their lunch crowd won't notice the difference. read more
