What's the deal with this location? Their donuts and kolaches are the best, WHEN THEY HAVE THEM, which is never. Want a kolache on a weekend after 9am? It will not happen. And they will not tell you that they're out until you've already stood in line for 10 minutes. Want to hit up the drive thru on the way to work so you can surprise you coworkers with a dozen glazed? It probably won't happen because they'll run out of every single donut. And if you're as unlucky as I have been on more than one occasion, you'll get stuck in the drive thru and be completely unable to get out because the cars in front are willing to wait 20 minutes for the donuts to be available again and then you're late for work. What I truly can't understand is WHY management hasn't come here and read 30 identical complaints and decided to do something about it? Why can't they keep up with customer demand? Maybe it's because hoards of people, like myself, are willing to return and suffer through the ineptitude because the donuts and kolaches are really the best... The Boudin Kolaches have been the talk of the neighborhood since I moved to the area. Served only on the weekend and only served until they run out they simply had to be myth. So when my husband said he was going to hop on his bike and head over to the best Shipley's in town at 7am on a Saturday I knew it was now or never. Well my friends the myth is true. The kolaches are amazingly delicious with the right amount of spice and a soft pillow of baked goodness surrounding the sausage. So worth it to get up early and make the trek. You can use a card if you order over $5, which at a Shipley's is actually a challenge. [CASH ONLY] A local food critic recently named the boudin kolaches at this Shipley's Donuts as one of his top 100 dishes of food to eat in Houston. Skimming the list, seeing that I had tried only five of these dishes, and looking for something to bring with me to a Saturday at St. Arnold's Brewery, I decided I would try said kolaches. But be forewarned: as I came to learn, the boudin kolaches are only sold on weekends, and they sell out quick. In fact, I bought the last seven this past Saturday, and, if I hadn't been paranoid that I'd see them again, I would have directed a maniacal, mad-scientist laugh at all the people waiting in line behind me. I also bought an apple fritter because, like Prometheus giving man fire, I have loved apple fritters since my mom gave me my first one. I could only eat part of the apple fritter because it was big. Unlike the cheaper apple fritters that you get at grocery stores, there was no too-gooey, from-the-can apple filling inside. This Shipley's fritter provided a nice balance between apple and pastry. Had I not had a box of kolaches in the back of my car and my doctor's voice warning me about diabetes in my head, I would have eaten the whole thing. The boudin kolaches were AMAZING. The boudin inside was spicy and melted in my mouth. And it was surrounded by a buttery and flaky breading. It's hearsay, but my friend claimed after her first bite that these were the best kolaches she's ever had in her life. I went pretty many times there, but at the last time they were worse and I think won't go here soon. I was there last time on Monday and ordered like usually donuts, but I had to be to hang on 30 minutes. It was terrible! If you ready a long time to wait and to get not enough tasty food I advice to visit it. But if you want to get a really good impression, you must find other a place. I have two favorite Shipley's in Houston and this is one of them. Whenever we get kolaches and donuts here, especially on Saturdays, they are always fresh, steaming hot and fluffy-good. Because this location is just so busy all the time, its almost a guarantee that everything is hot and fresh. More often than not, the glazed donuts are not even in their display racks but taken right off the glazing rack in the kitchen. Awesome. This place is cash only, so be prepared! read more

I've eaten at a lot of Shipley's around town and this is by far my favorite of the lot. It's great to go in at night because you can see the guy making the donuts in the window and at 10 pm you can be assured to get HOT glazed donuts!!! What can you say? Rude as all hell. Came here on a Sunday night and asked for a dozen mixed donuts. This was met with a rude tone by the woman behind the counter who looked annoyed and asked "but which ones, you have to tell me which ones, I need the names." Uh, when I ask for a dozen mixed I mean MIX them up with whatever. I was so taken aback I named six and said I changed my mind about wanting a dozen. At that point I just wanted to leave. She may have sensed I was pissed off because she tried to be fake nice which is even more awful but at that point I really couldn't muster a "have a good night" as she had totally ruined mine. This is the worst Shipley's I have been to. We came around a late hour probably midnight on a Thursday. I wasn't expecting there to be a plethora of choices but have been to another location that usually is able to serve what I order. When we arrived they had no kolaches and no cakes donuts. I couldn't understand the clerk clearly because she was mumbling and what my friend and I both heard her say was blueberry fields donut. I asked her what a "blueberry fields" donut was and she snapped at me and told my friend to explain to me what she was saying like I was mentally challenged. When she clearly annunciated blueberry FILING I was able to understand. In conclusion, customer service is very poor and they didn't have anything I actually wanted to order. read more

One thing every person should do, is treat themselves to a Shipley's Donut once a week before work. This location is ideal for the heights. There are somethings you need to know before jetting off to this Shipley's. They take cash and a credit card if the order is above 5 dollars. There is a drive-thru, but going inside seems to always be faster, when there is a line in the drive-thru. Let's start with a self realization. I'm probably a donut snob. I live in an area where gourmet donut competition is pretty fierce. With that backdrop, here are my thoughts. I've not experienced the kolaches (sp?) of Houston, which appear pretty tasty, but I like me some donut . Coming from Southern California I guess we have lots of good donut shops because I felt like these donuts were substandard in nearly every way... The cakes and donut rings were dry, the toppings were gritty and overly sweet with little flavor, and the fillings... Oh man, let's face it. They were just horrible. They tasted cheap, like they were filled with artificial flavoring through and through. Not knowing this, I bought a dozen, bit into every single one, and simply couldn't get through any one of them. A serious let down for a late night craving, resulting in me pitching a dozen donuts into the trash. Contrary to other comments about service rudeness, I found the service to be courteous and prompt, including a smile. That nearly elevated my POV to 2 stars. I only held back because the quality was really that poor, the storefront was dirty, and the area seemed pretty sketchy. I like feeling safe and who doesn't? I saw an earlier comparison to Dunkin Donuts and have to say that I disagree completely. While Dunkin and other chains like them are hometown favorites for the east coasters, Shipley is not a step up. To be fair, I am not a big fan of Dunkin Donuts, but think the other reviewer must be considering the Dunkin coffees, which are quite good. If that same reviewer spent enough time actually tasting some really good donuts, I think they might change their mind. But, I digress. Shipley donuts were awful in nearly every way. That's my personal experience. A positive note, aside from a friendly experience, is that someone mentioned Shipley is family owned. I like that quality and think it tends to provide a unique experience. I didn't experience what this meant, so I can't in good conscience provide more stars. I have been going to the Shipley's on bissonnet for many years now. And I have really enjoyed your donuts. Only the 2 to 3 times I have been the donuts have been not baked well, and the filling tastes different from usual like the bevarian cream which had a slightly different taste to it. It was dissapointing. They should really keep up with management and their employees training and baking supplies, and do their best to keep that great donut taste they have had for many years. I also received a donut with a hole in one side and that was also upsetting. The glazed donut needed to be better and have also had a taste like it had been licked on before it was given to me or were wet with some kind of liquid or water.. I did not appreciate it. Also the packaging for my glazed donuts was prepared wrong and I again did not like the presentation. Again I am hoping for a better baker and cashier. Thank you for your time. read more

My husband has talked about this place since I met him. He always compares every donut place we e have visited to Shipleys - this is his barometer. And now that I have visited, I understand why. We are glazed donut eaters, not the other fancy donut types. These were heaven. He also LOVES the kolaches here. They dont serve many kolaches in Atlanta and while I am not the biggest fan, they are really good here!! Will make this a must stop by on my next visit!! read more

Best Shipley's around. I've been to many-a-Shipley's and had varying versions of the simple sausage & cheese kolache and these guys absolutely nailed it! The perfect ratio of gooey cheese to SOFT bread while the sausage had a slight *snap when you bite into it. Perfection. Also, the plain cake donuts were on point. This is the worst Shipley's I've ever been to. They are always out of kolache unless you want boudin. The lines are super long and they seem to always give you the stale donuts from the day before. What 24/7 breakfast place stops making kolaches on sundays? I come here at least 3x a month, and every time I have to wait for kolaches because they never have enough. Normally I wait 10 min or so, but today my boyfriend just got attitude from an employee that says they don't make them on sundays after a certain time. I have been going to this location since i was about 4 years old, and i'm 20 now. The employees at this location that i have known my whole life are some of the SWEET, MOST GENUINE, KIND HEARTED people that i know. They are not RACIST, or RUDE to anyone. When i was younger they made going to school so much better by giving me those few minutes of love when i would stop to get breakfast. Not only are they amazing people but they also make some damn good do nuts. I have never gone to any other shipleys for kolaches because they can't top this locations. I only got on here because i saw some negative comments about the location and thought i would set the record straight for some of yall. We've been coming here to this location for many moons. This truly is the tastiest donut shop in houston. The donuts are made with love :) Seriously , their made fresh daily. The drive thru line is always busy during the morninga especially in the weekeends. But don't run, it always moves quickly. The donut holes are best servwd with a pint of milk. This is probably the worst Shipley's I've ever been to in Houston. They donuts are always hard, dark colored looking and not fresh at all. This is the only Shipley's that taste different their kolaches aren't like most Shipley's here they're very sweet and small at the other locations the kolaches are twice as big with a different kind of bread. My total was $5 the girl charged my card $50 lol who gets $50 worth of donuts at Shipley's? Had to wait a week to get my money back. My all time favorite Shipley's is off Ella and 610 they make your donuts when you order them it's always fresh and hot and I highly recommend them. read more

Shipley DO-NOTS! Being from California, I was stoked to find a Shipley's fairly close to where Im staying. I have been to a few Shipley's before, in the Galveston area and never encountered such unhappy people as I did here. Rude staff and everyone looks incredibly miserable. After receiving my change, that the lady behind the counter just slapped in my hand, she proceeded to thank the lady behind me in Spanish, telling her to have a wonderful day. Then looked at me and did not say a word. "Uh, thanks" I left. I will never ever come back here even if it were the only shop within 30 miles of me! Horrible service! I wish I could give this place a higher ranking, because due to shipley's making some pretty good donuts on a national level, I am very disappointed in this place. Not so much the donut/kolache quality, but the service. I had two ladies helping me, and they were extremely rude. I don't mind a little "I'm working Sunday morning at a bakery that opens up at 4 am, etc" attitude, but flat out being rude is ridiculous. I wouldn't go back here because of this. This is easily walking distance from my house and I love a hot pastry in the middle of a morning walk with my dog. It's always packed and the drive through line is long but moves quickly. This is the original Shipley's and they make boudin kolaches that are out of this world on Saturdays and Sundays. Come early because they run out quickly! Also a fun fact.
