Fantastic food, terrible service. My daughter ordered lamb curry, I ordered a couple other items. She waited for over an hour while I was served, every other table in the restaurant was served, and at least a dozen take out orders were filled. When my daughter approached a staff member to ask about the status of her order, she was treated rudely. No acknowledgement of the obvious error, no apology, no courtesy or civility. This is a tiny hole in the wall that packs quite a huge menu that goes from falafel to kebabs to burgers to a full coffee bar. The minute you walk in you are hit with a deja vu. The simplicity of the set up and the regulars make it understandable. I came for the falafel and that was a very difficult choice seeing the huge menu and resisting the gluttonics (new word) in action as they teased every atom in my taste buds. I am glad to report that my defenses worked this time and I had the falafel sandwich on a Lebanese wrap. It is huge and cut into two. Trust me and ask for half of it to go and you can enjoy it twice. The wrap was filled with enough falafel to guarantee plenty in every bite. In the filling you get a bit of everything that makes this sandwich popular. Hummus spread, tahini dressing, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers to add a crunch to the mix. The surprise is the palatine style pickles. I usually avoid pickles in my sandwiches but after the gave me a sample to taste I asked for extra. This is my one sandwich review. Unfortunately I had the most unfortunate and racist experience on my trip to St Paul by a staff member serving me and my guest at Shish. Regardless of attempts to be overly polite, kind and appreciative of his service and food. This staff member could not get past his hate and routinely made it clear his racist feelings with his remarks and comments towards me. I used to really love shish, years ago. I came here to eat lunch with a friend this summer for the first time in years. We each ordered at the same time but her food came out pretty quickly and mine never came. After asking a few times about my food, it was clear that mine was completely forgotten. By the time I got my food, 30 mins later, she was completely done and I was over it. I wished that maybe I had received some sort of compensation or maybe a simple "sorry". But I figured, all restaurants have bad days and maybe this was one of them. So, I didn't want to completely judge over this one mistake or wrote a negative review. I wanted to give it another chance. Now fast forward to this weekend. Me and a group of friends went to dinner. We showed up relatively early, around 530pm. It was busy but not crazy busy. We were able to find a booth seat quite easily. When it was my turn to order I had a couple questions about ingredients. However, the person working at the register had no idea what was in or not in the food and didn't seem to care to ask about it. So I placed my order and sat down. As we were waiting for our food a man working, not sure if he's the manager? Or who he was, He was bagging up takeout orders. Every time a take-out order was ready he would yell at the top of his lungs the name of the person. He was angry looking and a bit aggressive. The people sitting in the tables in the middle of the restaurant made eye contact with us a couple times because it seemed like the guy was yelling about 2 inches from their faces. It made one of the people at my table very uncomfortable. She made a comment about it and said "that is way too much aggressive male energy for me" now onto the food. The food came out at all different times, which isn't a huge deal but two out of the four of us were missing items. We had to flag someone down and prove that we had ordered the items that we were missing. No one working seemed happy. The room felt very tense. I can't speak for everyone but my food was not good. My rice was ice cold and the portions seem to be a lot smaller than usual. I got a side of vegetables with the hummus and the carrots were crumbly almost as if they were frozen and they were trying to thaw and with that came two pitiful pieces of cauliflower. Definitely not worth the extra money I paid for a side of veggies. If you try this place sit in a seat closest to front of the restaurant so you are not being screamed at. Also, KEEP YOUR RECEIPT. If there are missing items you will need to prove it. As for me, I don't think $17.95 and $9.88 plus tax was worth my meal. Delicious! The chicken curry is a little pricy but OMG so delicious. Gyros are great too. The only thing I wouldn't recommend here is dessert- it's expensive and just average. They serve breakfast until 1 PM on the weekends. I was already jonesing for a Greek breakfast and that fact alone made me come here. Good god. I was expecting it to be good based on other reviews but it was so, so, so much better than good. I got the Greek omelette - perfect fluffy eggs, spinach, kalamata olives, a nice big chunk of feta on top, delicious bread, and some of the best fried potatoes I've ever eaten. Honestly, I have no idea how the potatoes were that good. Crispy, flavorful, not overly seasoned, just fantastic. And all of that is without mentioning the americano, which was better than what you'd find at most coffee shops. It's a no-brainer, this is a gem and you should definitely eat here. Went back to Shish for the first time after their remodel and was pleasantly surprised! Had stopped going there a while ago because the service had gotten bad and the place was looking worse for wear (the food was always great). Now it's back to its old self - and even better! They've got some new menu items, too. I tried the falafel bowl - comes with jasmine rice - which was excellent. Don't forget to get it with pickles! Large portions, nicely presented and all tasted very, very good (the tabouli could use a bit more lemon juice for my taste). Salads are huge. Two of us shared the Meza plate appetizer and a gyro pita, which was very filling. Along with kebabs and wraps, a variety of burgers are on the menu. We couldn't quite figure out how "burgers and fries" qualify as Mediterranean food. Perhaps it's because Shish is close to Macalester College, which may also explain "American" breakfasts and the desert choices. Yes, they have baklavah. Walked to Shish Mediterranean last Friday from my Sister's home in St. Paul. It was absolutely beautiful out, so we decided to sit outside! The cute cafe setting near Macalister college was a perfect lunch spot! Our party enjoyed a chicken wrap, a Cesar salad, some cheese cake, and I got the Falafel Burger! My Burger was one of the best meals I have had in a very long time! The falafel was cooked perfectly, topped with avocado, and hummus! It was huge, delicious, and came with salad or fries! I was feeling like I was on vacation so I went with the fries! It was a great choice, it topped off the meal perfectly! This is one of those places you want to go back to right after you eat here the first time! This was formerly my favorite restaurant in Minneapolis. They jacked up their prices following a renovation--fair enough. But then they jacked them up more without actually changing the menu board. So your order always winds up a few dollars more than what you expect based on posted prices. ​That was ​two years ago. Invariably, servers feign surprise when asked about this. The food is still good, though less carefully prepared and the portions ​and garnishes less generous. The server just THREW my paltry green salad onto my table while rushing by. VEGANS BEWARE Shish's menu is and was lying about what items are vegan. Their burger buns have milk in them and have apparently always had milk in them. On top of that, they don't seem to be in any particular hurry to fix this. I was a pretty regular customer. I won't be going forward. Shish has gone through some major renovation both in the physical location and on their menu since the last time I visited. The changes aren't good. First off, their new signage takes away any description of what comes on the items. You have to find a takeout menu (only 2 available when I visited) or wait to awkwardly ask the cashier about everything. This is stressful when there is a huge line behind you. Second, my favorite had been the falafel burger that came with avocado slices on it. The avocado made it . And this item had been marked as vegan. Now it doesn't come with avocado and it's marked as not vegan (and is, I think, still the same cost). What was up with this vegan/not vegan issue? The cashier went to check with the manager - ALL OF THEIR BURGER BUNS HAVE MILK IN THEM. Since when? Since forever. So every time I ordered it the past, it was also not vegan. My face fell and my stomach turned. Then how is this other new veggie burger marked as vegan?? That's an issue with the new menu, they said. There wasn't any signage, no sticky note; it's marked as vegan even though it is not. A temporary fix would have indicated they are aware of the problem and will be working to fix it. As it stands, they appear not to care about vegan customers or their customers with milk allergies. I contemplated walking out, but I was hungry and my partner wanted the gyro. I settled for sweet potato fries, which had always been the star of my visit anyway and worth the price of an upgrade. The side of garlic sauce (still marked as vegan) was tasty as usual, but the fries were on the burned side of crispy. I actually didn't finish them and I love sweet potato fries! I also got the 5-piece falafel (nearly the same cost as a wrap) that came with a side of the tahini. This was good. It cost $2 to get the smallest side of hummus. But it was tasty and adequate for the number of falafel. I was happy it came on a small bed of spinach, so I could have some greens. My partner did get the gyro, which was also on the burned side of the charred meat. He's had better on earlier visits. In conclusion, it was overall a pretty disappointing visit that made me feel sad about all the times I had eaten there before. I come from a restaurant background and this is simply not how menu issues are handled. I would have spoken to the manager directly, but it was a busy Saturday night and I just wanted to go home. My partner and I loved coming here because I could get the falafel burger (with avocado!) and he could get the gyro. We agree that we will look for a new falafel place. read more

If Samuel Huntington had had a Leoburger at Shish, he wouldn't have written "The Clash of Civilizations!" I'm not sure how old the cafe is. But it doesn't come to me as a big surprise, if one claims that when Kofi Annan was an undergrad student during the 60s at Macalester College, two blocks away from the Shish, he had a Leoburger for lunch between his classes and the first bite into the burger inspired him to become the seventh Secretary-General of the UN. If you're curious what the mythical Leoburger that has profoundly affected, and I believe keeps affecting, the political thought and activism is, go and try it! Because it can't be adequately described by words. It basically is a half-pound of grilled Angus burger, crowned with a generous amount of gyro meat, topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce, and served with a side of fries and garlic sauce. However, there is more into this combination. It's not only a burger. It actually is a dialogue between two civilizations (Huntington's Western and Islamic civilizations), presented in a bun. More importantly, the result of the interaction between the two civilizations presented in the bun could have not been independently obtainable. There is a synergy at work here that makes you lose faith in mathematics. Because, one plus one does not equal to two here. It's more like 4 or 5. Leoburger is only one among a long list of delicious food. But good food is not the only thing you could expect here. Friendly service is the other thing. Since it's close to Macalster College, it gets super crowded in certain hours of day. In many other busy businesses, we usually anticipate indifferent, hasty service. But at Shish, even during the busiest hours, we've been received very politely by the hard-working staff. The only negative thing is that their desserts don't impress me that much. They look better than they taste and exactly for that reason, they're hard to resist! I know I won't taste what I see. But I can't resist them. I totally agree with Alexandra on this one. My first visit to Shish this past Friday night was by accident. I had the best Mediterranean food in town...yet. My friends moved from Ohio to the TC area last week. We were looking for a place to have dinner on Friday night and decided to avoid downtown Minneapolis for obvious reasons like parking and the crowds. Moreover it was almost 9:30pm and we just needed something less busy. Driving around Grand Ave, came across Shish and the place looked nice with ample curbside parking. I had heard about Shish before and being a vegetarian would definitely vote for Mediterranean food for its Hummus, Falafel and the most famous Ottomon Empire invention "BAKLAVA". I ordered Shish Maza Mix which is everything a vegan can eat Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Falafel, Fabbouli with plenty of soft, tender Pita breads. My friends ordered Lamb chops and Lamb burgers and they had nothing to complain about the taste or the quantity. I agree with Rhonda and Sal on Falafel. I have had better Falafel at other restaurants. But, I still give them 5 stars for the service. The service is just amazing with beautiful girls with the most beautiful smile even at the end of their workday. They even helped us pick our order as we were confused and kept looking at the menu. A special mention to their Pistachio Baklava. It was pure HEAVEN. I wish I could try their cakes that looked delicious but was already full with half of my Maza mix. Had an interesting experience at Shish. Before COVID we would eat at this establishment. Last week when we visited it had a vibe of a take out spot. The on line orders were popping out of the printer with tickets almost to the floor. The man in charge was working feverishly to keep up along with two line cooks. Pick up orders were being announced chop chop.Our table was close to the kitchen. However the customers in the restaurants we're being served piece meal. Our table was no different. I received my meal a full 10 minutes before my wife was served. I brought this issue to the attention of the manager and suggested that the table should be served all at the same time. Sheesh, Shish... you've got some good Middle Eastern food. I come here maybe once a year and I've always liked everything. I've done the shawarma platter, falafels, gyros and the chicken kabobs, all quite satiating. The portions are generous, but I still always want to eat all the side dishes since the grilled veggies and tabbouleh are both great too. I try to leave without making eye contact with the desserts, or I'll have to be rolled out. It's a counter-order cafe, so you order and pay and then take a number and they bring you your food. It's always busy, but I've never had to wait for a table since everything moves along pretty smoothly. It's a great place for a group where everyone is paying separately, so that there's no awkward mathlete struggle at the end when you're trying to figure out who owes what. The chicken shawarma came out right away and was not warm and the kabob took a solid 15 minutes longer so imagine how awkward that was. Everyone! I need your attention... I am missing some gyro meat that should have been on my plate Saturday morning. If you're in the Grand/Snelling area and catch it strolling around aimlessly, please message me. There is no reward, but I may buy you breakfast. Thank you. With that out of the way, I stopped in at Shish on Saturday morning after putting it off a week and going off the recommendation of a friend of mine. It's a Grand in StP, expect street parking unless you can get into one of the local lots. For those unaware, it's an order at the counter, menu is on a chalk board on a wall, get a number, sit and wait place. I stood there gazing at the menu and had to ask myself, WWPEJD? What would pancake eating Jesus do? Order pancakes with breakfast or just get a breakfast specialty? Well he said to order pancakes. And I did... along with the Greek omelet which sounded amazing, gyro, feta cheese, kalamata olives, spinach, red bell peppers, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes & red onion; served with rosemary potatoes, toast and fruit. Pop a squat with a coffee, and wait 5-7 minutes or so when the chow arrives. Everything looks great, omelet is pretty, taters look solid, cakes are a double short stack of small cakes - hell yeah, lets dig in. Then I notice... I've got a lot of tzatziki... Like a lot a lot. No worries. I love that stuff. Then I notice under the pillow of tzatziki, my gyro meat has only left me faint clues he was there. To tune of 3 miniscule slices. I shit you not, I had 3 tiny shavings of meat. To do some recon, I pull up Yelp, search Shish and look at pics of this breakfast from other users. Wow, they must have got all the gyro meat previously! Bastards not leaving me any! You can see the couple of pieces sticking out of the tzatziki in my pic. That was it folks. Whatever, I now start eating my nearly vegetarian omelet in disappointment. Flavor is solid, the tomatoes give it a real acidic flavor and the tzatziki provides a nice cool cuce flavor. Decent hint of dill. But, the feta cheese on top, was ice cold and added nothing at all. Do yourself a favor and stick this brick inside hte omelet so it melts a bit and the flavor rolls into the dish. Rosemary spuds were a total miss. Some were cold, the edges were barely crisp and they literally fell apart. Just a total let down. Fruit... well, it was fruit and not fucked up. Congrats. Pancakes... the only thing that keeps this from being a 1 star. The cakes were a solid buttermilk and the cream with them was really nice. You can debate whether syrup is needed on your own time, I rolled with syrup although a preserve wouldn't have been bad either (especially something tarty to go with the salty butter flavor). Low and behold I'm done eating and get out. It was too early to be an asshole to the people that worked there. I simply wasn't happy and figured swearing at my steering wheel on my drive back to the NW burbs was more worth it. My final thought, the breakfast was great in theory, very poorly executed. Put the gyro meat and cheese in the damn omelet. Cold hard cheese on top and gyro meat outside of an omelet that is full of big chunked veggies which then makes it REALLY tough to get a bite of everything is just asinine to me. read more

As an area resident, I've been to Shish a number of times. A Mediterranean cafe, the fare would be most widely recognizable as Greek. It's a "fast casual" setup where you order at a register and take a number to your table. The food is excellent. Their standard varieties of gyros and falafels and hummus are superlative, but two things often get undersold here. They have an excellent breakfast, which can be a welcome departure from normal breakfast food and as light or heavy as you're feeling. This includes amazing coffee. They also have great bakery items and desserts. I've found myself bringing them places to friends and home to enjoy as well. Give their dessert case a try. Shish you still make me happy.....had my hummus, gyro, and a pot o tea here today and it was absolutely fabulous. Probably the best gyro meat I have ever had.....I highly recommend this place anytime of day and for many different people and taste. They do have just burgers and soups also.....and a damn fine looking breakfast menu. My friends had a avocado wrap lavish and it was delightful and fresh tasting...my non-adventurous friend got a chicken sandwich which was sprinkled with perhaps a curry spice but I tasted it and it tasted great and just like grilled chicken....but she doesn't care for curry so she was sensitive to that spice. She never had gyro meat and i shared and she was really sad that she didn't order that....I was happy to share and all was good. read more

A constant now in our workplace lunchtime rotation, Shish is pretty much as good as it gets. Everything on the menu for a vegetarian option is just amazing. It's phenomenal Mediterranean food that has no equal in the Twin Cities (not that I have found yet). To start...order the Dolma. Trust me. One of the only places where I have ordered it and it comes warm, just made. Absolutely amazing and a staple order every time I visit. I have had each of the vegetarian options for burgers/sandwiches by this point and they are all delectable, but nothing beats the Falafel Burger. A well balanced falafel patty on a toasted bun with avocado, hummus, hot sauce, and your normal burger toppings. There are no words to describe this amazing burger. In my very first visit to Shish with coworkers we were honored by one of the chefs with a Leo Burger version of the Falafel Burger...it was so amazing and filling! Mediterranean done well! This place is awesome and has fast, great service. It's an order at the counter/pay at counter and take a number & seat kind of deal. They have a great variety on the menu and a pastry bar that has an awesome, wide array of sweets. I never tried the cakes, but each time I go I'm so tempted because they're the biggest slices I see for a great price. Seating is pretty good, they have a cute little cozy area in back if you don't want to sit in the main area. They have booth seating for groups and regular tables as well if you're one-on-one. I've been going here for years with my favorite being the Jerusalem breakfast, which requires a hearty appetite. They do seem to cycle thru staff, however, and you have to make sure that everything listed in the menu shows up on your plate, about half the time it doesn't and you have to ask for it, although it's usually something quite minor, like olives. This is a cute cafe with a huge selection of food. The staff was very friendly and service prompt. It was busy when we arrived for an early dinner and I was worried that we'd be able to find a table for our large party, but there was plenty of space in their back room. There's also nice seating outside on the sidewalk for smaller parties. I enjoyed my lemonade and Avocado Lavish Wrap. That thing was stuffed with perfectly avocados! It came with a nice big portion of fries and those were great, too. We split the maza mix appetizer sampler and that was a great portion and really tasty. For my second visit to Shish, I had the Gyro on flat bread on July 21, 2010. The service was swift, the price was low and the taste was wonderful. The gyro meat is so delicious I think next time I will skip the flat bread entirely and just have the cook dump the meat and vegetables on a plate. Bonus points for serving in a way that avoids a sloppy, drippy mess. Last time I had the chicken schawarma, which was also good but not as flavorful to me. Wow!! This is my favorite place for middle-eastern food in the Twin Cities. They serve high-quality food in a casual cafe/deli setting. The staff is super friendly and patient, impressive for how busy this place is. The portions are enormous. Seriously - the sample platter was more than enough to satisfy 2 adults The fafafels are amazing as is the tabbouleh and the hummus. My friend got the ground beef kebab platter and that was served with a house salad - large portion again - and a very generous portion of rice and grilled vegetables. The rice I could have eaten all by itself without any sides. The best part was the Turkish coffee, flavored with cardamom and sweetened just right.
