We came here at the recommendation of local people who use them for catering in the Twin Cities. Close to Macalester College. The menu is fairly simple and lots of options for various diets. My husband ordered the falafel plate. He enjoyed it but he felt that the rice was not as flavorful as other rice plates we've enjoyed at other mediterranean places. I ordered the chicken swarma and side salad. The swarma was AMAZING, i mean it was SPECTACULAR! I loved the moistness and the spices. Delicious little magical goodness that I would come back to over again. Came on a Wednesday night around 7 and there were a couple tables occupied but not too busy at all. You go up to the counter to order and then they bring out your food. In addition to the Mediterranean menu they also had a bakery case where they had some dessert bars and cake by the slice. I got the chicken shawarma pita with fries which ended up being close to $10. The food came out pretty quick. The pita was packed with chicken! The chicken was very tender and flavorful and the tzatziki sauce balanced out the chicken really well. Only negative was that the pita was super messy to eat so I actually ended up just eating with a knife and fork. The fries were just ok for me. They're the thinner style which I don't prefer and they had a sour-ish seasoning on them that I wasn't expecting and I'm not sure I liked. Overall, I'm happy with my meal. Shish makes the best falafel in the Twin Cities. We got their falafel wrap ($10) which had excellent pita, super-herbed and spiced falafel and sesame-rich tahini. The side of french fries ($2) also were fabulous and seasoned with some herbs (rosemary?) that took these into serious flavor country. Their hummus side was ($5) perfectly respectable, but curiously not at the same level as the falafel. On my second trip, I got the falafel burger ($10) and foul medammas ($10). The falafel burger is more boring than the falafel wrap; the sauce is different and the falafel patty is too thick and bland. The foul medammas wasn't bad but didn't blow me away. Shish labels all its vegan items, but there are discrepancies between its website and the menu shown in the cafe itself. The staff isn't super knowledgeable about the issues, so it would be great if they standardized things and had clear answers. read more

Great food! I met up with some friends, one of whom says she swears by Shish, and I can see why. This is an ostensibly modest eatery where you order from the counter and they bring your food to your table. In our case there were four of us; the first two to arrive were hungry so we ordered right away, and we had our food before our other friends even arrived. What I'm saying is that the service is VERY fast. You can think of this as a place to get some Mediterranean-style grub quickly. And everything was outstanding! I was a little indecisive between all of the options, so I got the "Trio", which was three different skewers of meat on a bed of rice and vegetables, plus a side salad. Kind of pricey, but a lot of food and it was so delicious I can't stop thinking about it. Every zingy bite of meat tasted great on its own, plus there was a garlic-y dipping sauce that made for a nice, simple twist. My friends really enjoyed everything they got, which included falafel that was gobbled up rapidly, and Mediterranean-style burgers. We hung out for hours, actually, and I wound up going back for a slice of very nice cheesecake. There was a little chocolate fudge chunk in the cheesecake. That is excellent news for all of us. Wowza it's time for an update. 2 days shy of an 8 year old review. So this is my go to gyro spot for this area. I say that as there are a few other choices all very close by. There is the Naughty Greek(yum) & Zait & Za'atar(the old Lucilles which I haven't had yet. Both close earlier) and the Black Sea residing on the north side of 94 and University. This is also one of my favorites but again, is on the other side of the freeway. It may not be the easiest spot to park when busy but I went later and was able to park right in front and walk in.
