I have bought 2 new cars from this dealer. However, my days of buying from them are over. I will not support a dealer that has such terrible customer service and a horrendous service department. Once a car dealer loses it's credibility, it's almost impossible to get it back. The final straw with Shockley was when I took my car in for a recall notice. Honda had a recall notice for their power steering hose on certain makes/models (mine included). Although I had never had a problem with my power steering, I thought it was important enough to get it done before it became an issue. After the work was completed, I took my car to my normal repair shop as my car needed an oil change. My mechanic told me I was low on power steering fluid and topped it off. I didn't think much about it at the time as often fluid levels need to settle and topping off is pretty normal. A week later when I had my brakes done, I was told not only was my power steering fluid was low, but that there appeared to be a leak in the system. I found it odd that the dealer would mess up something like recall work, but I called to let them know the situation and was given a run-around. Now I'm going to have to drive my car for two weeks with this problem which is dangerous, and have to continually feed power steering fluid into it until I can give it back to a dealer's service department that I don't trust. Needless to say, Shockley has sold me a car (AND gotten my service work) for the last time. read more

Too busy it seems to deliver the goods... here's a letter I wrote to the Facility Director regarding my recent discouraging experiences. Honda owners beware..!! Shockley Honda puts up a good front page in regards to selling Customer Care... but, what you may end-up getting is rather an epic fail in that department. Hello Mr. Pellicot, This effort to contact you is in regard to a few issues I've recently had with your service department. First, this all started with a recall notice I received a few weeks ago. When contacting your facility, I was asked to schedule a time to bring in my Element. I scheduled it for today at 10am. When making the appointment, I asked how long the repair would take and was told "an hour or less". This morning, when dropping off the car, I arrived promptly at 10am. I was informed to stay near my car and wait for a Service Assistant. I waited for about 15 minutes before Ron King began processing my car and told me that it would take about 1.5 hours. I explained that I was told otherwise and that I had a 10am appointment... and that I needed to be leaving no later than 11am. This did not seem to affect Mr. King whatsoever. All he could say was that "the people that make these appointments are told to inform owners that it takes 1.5 hours". No matter what I said... Mr. King just stared at his computer screen and repeated the same phrase... "the people that make these appointments are told to inform owners that it takes 1.5 hours"... like a zombie. I could see that this conversation was going nowhere, so I left Mr. King's office to search for someone that could better assist my needs. He had already deferred me to Cindy East. And, once I left Mr. King's office, I was able to speak with Cindy and explained my time issue. She also mentioned the same thing Mr. King said... "the people that make these appointments are told to inform owners that it takes 1.5 hours". But, she listened to me when I said that if that was the case, I would have to cancel since I made an appointment weeks ago, I was told it would take less time and that I planned my day around this information. Ms. East did what she had to do and made this all happen with time to spare. My car was repaired and I was driving it off your lot at 10:50am. Ms. East deserves praise and reward for her efforts... Mr. King..? well, not so much. So, if everyone in your Service Department thinks "the people that make these appointments are told to inform owners that it takes 1.5 hours". But, the folks that make these appointments are telling owners "an hour or less"... well, there in-lies a problem. Second, when I made the appointment for the recall repair, I asked to speak with someone in the service department in regard to also having my water pump replaced. They said that the service department was very busy and asked If they could have someone call me later. I gladly gave my contact information and waited for a call. About a week went by and I never received a call. So, I called again and went through the exact same process. Nobody in your service department was available so they again took my contact information and assured me that someone would call. I never received a call. Today, after leaving your facility and wanting to speak to the Service Manager in regard to all of this... I called and asked specifically to talk to the service manager. I was transferred to her extension. The phone rang, rang and rang... then it went into voicemail... where I left a very specific message for her to please call. That was over two hours ago. At this point, I really do not expect to ever get a call... but, I thought you would like to know how mostly dissatisfied I am with your service department. Except for Ms. East... who seems to be the only employee you have that actually wants to satisfy anybody. The real peculiar thing here is that when your customers call your facility... the recordings that they have to listen to... talk about the "highest level of customer care..." I've now dealt with several different people at your facility... I'd say about a half dozen. And, the only person that is interested in the any level of customer care is Ms. East. DO NOT go here!!! I've been going here for almost 5 years. The last two times I've gone for an oil change they told me I needed expensive, unnecessary repairs. For the first repair (a new steering rack that was supposedly leaking and would cost over $1500) I took my vehicle to a independent mechanic that I trust. He could not find a leak. The second time, Honda told me I needed a new battery (showed me the low reading on a printout) I took my vehicle to Advanced Auto who tested my old battery and said it was perfectly fine. I had a smooth and stress-free customer experience the day I purchased my new vehicle. But since then, service has been lacking. I paid for vehicle registration as part of my sales transaction, however I received a notice from the MVA that my registration was due. After corresponding back-and-forth with the dealer I ended up paying the MVA out of pocket for my registration fees and then receiving reimbursement from Shockley Honda. My windshield was leaking and I take my car in to Shockley on 3 separate occasions until it was corrected repaired. My first visit to have it assessed wasn't even recorded in their system. It's been difficult to schedule an oil change, often requiring a week before an appointment is available. And with an appointment on the book, it took at least an hour from start to finish for a basic oil change. This may sound insignificant, but they claim to give customers free car washes, yet after going in several times to get my car washed during normal hours, I've driven up to find a "car wash is closed" sign every single time. Disappointing, seriously. Customer Service could definitely use some improvements when it comes to basic etiquette and follow-through, considering that we're customers who had many dealerships to choose from and we selected Shockley when making a significant purchase. Show some appreciation through training your staff better in customer service skills. I personally would never purchase another vehicle here. read more

I brought my van in for a problem on Monday, August 28. They diagnosed it & 'fixed' it. The next day my van was doing the SAME EXACT thing. It was not fixed. I took it back the next morning. I asked if they were going to complete the fix at no charge since I already spent $831.90 & it wasn't fixed. (Again, the SAME EXACT problem was occurring.) The service rep said that she have to talk to the technician first. I also asked if they had a loaner or would cover the rental car. She said they don't & they wouldn't. The service rep called later & said that it came up with a different code therefore it was a different problem. This didn't really surprise me. We talked and she passed me along to her manager. The conversation went back & forth, escalated and we both ended up talking over one another. Then, from way out of left field, she said, "Are you arguing with me because I'm a woman?" I was floored. My hands actually started to tremble. I was passed along to her 'boss.' The person was actually her underling. The same basic conversation: new code--new problem or same symptoms--same problem. He eventually said he'd discount the cost of the new fix $831.90. Then he said that my van was old with a lot of miles on it. And maybe I should think about putting a lot of money into it. He'd be glad to discount the purchase price for $831.90 if I just wanted to buy a new vehicle. I wasn't floored like the 'woman' comment, but pretty unbelievable. In short--the most unprofessional handling of a customer problem that I've experienced or even heard in my life. read more

Came in for a check-up on my 2013 Honda. I prefer to call rather than schedule maintenance online. I am glad that Shockley Honda has that option plus evening and Sat. hours. I was greeted quickly by Joe Seedy and in his office we discussed the proposed work. He was knowledgeable, friendly and most important - he listened to me and then answered my questions. He made me feel like part of the process. The waiting "area" is amazing and offers several areas with various types of seating, free WIFI and coffee/tea. However I did have to sit in the showroom for over two hours to get a buyers order written up for me by the finance dept and once I picked up the car Shockley Honda put the wrong tags on my car so I was driving around for a day with someone elses plates! I was driving from St Louis to Philly with a business stop in Frederick. My 2003 Odyssey (189,100 miles) started "grinding" in the engine compartment on a Sunday and I ultimately made it to Frederick. 7AM on Monday I was waiting at their Service Bay. No promises as they did intake but suggested a diagnosis by midday. I went to my meeting. Within an hour (8:30AM) I had a diagnosis call. Clear info, clear choices, clear prices, clear timing for repairs - with OEM or secondary mkt parts. I gave an OK. Second call before noon - job done with price just slightly below estimate. I have taken two of my vehicles to Shockley and have had bad experiences on both. The first involved a SRS light that had come on. When I took it to them they said it was a sensor that was bad and would cost $350 to replace. I took the car home and did some research. Turns out that a lot of people had that light come on and , for many people ,it turned out to be part of the seat belt system which is covered under warranty. When I took it back a few months later to Shockley and mentioned that it might be part of the seat belt assembly suddenly the diagnoses changed from a sensor to a seat belt part which was covered. Apparently, the first time they were trying to get me to pay for something which they knew was covered. The second experience was when I took my vehicle for a simple oi change. A few months after the oil change at Shockley, my husband was checking the oil before going on a trip and noticed that it was extremely dirty and didn't even looked like it had been changed. I don't put a lot of miles on the vehicle and had asked for synthetic oil so there was no reason for the oil to have pieces of dirt floating in it which could destroy the engine. I'm not sure what they did to the vehicle but I paid for an oil change that looks like it never took place. Needless to say we will not be taking any of our vehicles back to this dealer for service. read more

I took my Honda Accord 2009 to Shockley Honda for a Service repair that fell under a Recall by Honda. I was initially, literally shooed away from Criswell Honda in Germantown after they claimed my car was not burning enough oil to fall under the Recall and they told me my car did not need the necessary work done(They lied and cheated me by topping the oil off). But Shockley Honda was fabulous when it came to performing the oil consumption test and then, servicing my vehicle. This place is exactly how a Dealer ship should be run. I will be buying a new Honda in a few month (Need to size up for the family) and will definitely approach this dealership if it is a Honda I decide to purchase. A special shout to Ron Sumangil at the Service department for being courteous and helping me out each time I drove into the Service center.His follow ups with Honda and with me were timely. I feel any place that has good after sales service, deserves good business and that is what will keep bringing customers back. The initial sale is just 25% of running a good business. Shockley has a fantastic setup and nice people working there and should continue to do a good in a time where most dealerships are not so good. read more

Four Lies: 1. I let Bill, the salesman, know I would be shipping the car to Saudi Arabia soon and wanted to make sure it was mechanically in good shape. I specifically asked about the timing belt, brakes, and transmission. The differential service and battery service were listed on the car fax report. Bill asked for Steve Trimble's input on this information and Steve agreed to check with the mechanics. He came back and reported that the transmission fluid would be replaced, the brakes were good, and that the timing belt could not be inspected as it was internal to the engine. I asked him if there was a computer read out from the maintenance minder system, or an exterior inspection that could give me an idea of if it had been replaced or would soon need to be replaced. Steve said that it is not possible to know the condition of the belt without disassembling a large portion of the engine (water pump, pulleys, belts, etc). I asked him what the standard milestone is for replacement in terms of miles or years. Steve did not know and did not ask the technicians. I sensed he was irritated with my continued questioning and wasn't interested in researching the issue with the mechanics. I asked for a second opinion at another Honda dealership one week later. The mechanic there pointed out a small leak visible from the base of the tensioner bolt advising it was a sign the bolt and belt are reaching their maximum life expectancy. I asked him if there is a standard for replacing timing belts and he said between 60,000 and 90,000 miles and that delayed repair could result in complete engine failure. I found this same recommendation on Honda's website (ahm-ownerlink.com) 2. The two front suspension brackets had cracked seals with black fluid leaking from them. The driver's side shock assembly was bad. The total repairs for the two items above was over $2,500. I asked Shockley to reimburse me their costs only for these repairs and received no response. 3. The car was not ready for sale. I called at 9am the day I purchased the car and was advised the car was on the lot and had not been sold. It was listed on the dealer's website three days prior to my call. I arrived at 1:30pm and the car was not ready until 7:30pm. 4. "New" tires were installed to pass Maryland inspection. Shockley installed off brand tires over five years old (I should have checked the date before driving an hour home). Standard warranty for tires is six years so I'll probably end up sinking another $500 in this vehicle over the next few months. read more

I filled out the credit application before I went in and after negotiating with Chapin on the sales price. He was quick to get back to me and had no sales gimmicks. It truly was a pleasure working with both Chapin and Shockley. It was the fastest, easiest car buying experience I have had to date and I highly recommend that if you are considering a Honda then Shockley and Chapin Painter is who you should go see. I had made n appointment online to work concurrently with going to a movie. I was at the movie for over two hours. I was told my car would be ready by 4, it was not. Peter Covert provided the excuse that they were overbooked, piled up, whatever it was, it was lame and did not calm down my husband at all. We were told to go home, which the n took us home, and my car would be delivered to us, or we could come back another day. Problem was I went through a schedule to get my car looked at during the time frame which I had lined up. This is the first time this has happened, but coupled with the purchasing of my car, which was a horrible experience, I am becoming very disenchanted with this shop. read more

It took an email to the service manager, but she was extremely helpful and accommodating. She personally made sure that my vehicle was taken care of, and even provided a loaner vehicle from right off the lot for us to drive through the weekend if needed. My sales person, Jon Price, was very knowledgeable about the different car models, trim levels and options and was extremely patient while I decided which trim level and color I wanted. He knew what questions to ask to help me make my decision and did not pressure me at all like many other dealers have. WARNING:a dealer without credibility, stay away!They work hard except telling you the truth. Just before we signed the finance contract, the APR was increased by 5 times than what they always promised. After we were going to take the car with an improved APR ( still three times high than they originally stated) and signed part of documents, a guy who claimed himself as the boss of the dealership cancelled all purchasing transactions. We have never ever, be treated like that. We were shocked twice in the dealership and spent 6 hours and got nothing but frustration and angry. They are just totally ignorant their customers and break their words freely. In a word, they have no credibility.In addition, just because involving with this dealer and ending with nothing, we lost our chance to get deals with other dealership. I went in to buy a used odyssey that I had called about in advance and made an appointment. When I got there I waited for 45 min for the salesperson I made an appointment with while he helped another customer. Then once we finally sat down he was unable to tell me what my old car would trade in for because they couldn't get the computer to work, they said. They said they couldn't help me and they'd call me the next day with all the numbers on my trade in/new car/loan info. The next day Shockley called me 3 times at work without leaving a message even though I told them very clearly I wouldn't be available to speak until a certain time. When I got off work I called them and they said I needed to come in to discuss the numbers. When I asked to get the trade in value and new care price over the phone since we had already discussed the details the night before and I didn't want to drive all the way in again if the prices were out of my range and the salesmen Thomas couldn't tell me so got the sales manager. They then proceeded to talk about me next to the phone without putting it on hold so I could hear them and acted like I was being difficult and even did an impression of me saying "I'm not coming all the way down there again if you can just give me the numbers on the phone...". Then after they talked about me for 5 minutes the sales manager got on the phone and acted like he had no idea what I was talking about or who was on the phone even though they clearly had just had a whole conversation about me. He said he wasn't at his desk so he couldn't give me the exact figures then wouldn't answer any of my questions with a straight answer and was very rude. This would have been my third car with Shockley but after that experience I will never shop there again. I will get my new van somewhere else. The sales manager was rude and unhelpful and the sales guy didn't seem like he knew what he was doing. Unfortunately, because I was a young women by myself I think they were trying to take advantage of me and treat me like I'm an idiot. read more

I cannot believe the poor level of customer service I received today, especially when compared with the excellent care offered at another dealership that I headed to next. At both places, I told the sales person that I was interested in purchasing a newer model Honda, preferable a CRV. I drive a 2005 Honda Accord that I bought through Shockley in 2008. The Shockley salesperson (who was surprisingly disheveled ... don't these people try to make a good impression anymore?) first of all ignored me completely, went right to my husband to shake his hand and introduce himself. When my husband indicated that I was the shopper, the guy did not apologize for his sexist assumption and treated me very dismissively. In fact, he Disappeared after I asked to test drive a new CRV. I said that I wasn't planning on buying a car today, but that I was interested in some test drives of CRVs and newer model Accords. He obviously lost interest in me at that point. We spotted him chatting on his cell phone, strolling around the parking lot, not bringing me a car to drive. The sea of sales people sitting behind the large desk in the lobby watched us leave without saying a word. More than 15 minutes had elapsed since he had left us, saying he would bring a new car around for us to drive. As we left, walking to our car, we spotted him strolling around the side lot, on his phone. The experience really blew my mind. Let me just add that I was prepared to pay cash if I found a car I wanted; I can't decide if the salesperson was lazy and didn't want to work for a sale, or arrogant because he had already met his quota, or what. We went from there to another dealership, I told these folks all the same things: that I wanted to drive a newer model CRV, that I wasn't ready to buy something today but wanted to do some research. Both my husband and I were greeted pleasantly and I was seated in a 2013 CRV within 7 minutes with a charming, attentive salesperson. The difference could not have been more stark. read more

I would recommend Shockley to anyone. I had a great experience there, Jonathan Price was great to work with. He provided a fair price out of the gate, and was able to accommodate my timeline, trim, and color preferences. When the van didn't show up as expected, he managed to get another one without excessive test drive miles...on-time. I did all of this on-line, and this was one of only a few dealerships that would take me seriously. They did not insult my intelligence or play any silly games. Straight forward buying experience. One dealership came in a wee bit cheaper than Shockley, but I didn't feel like I could trust them, so opted to pay a little extra to a dealership that would commit to a deal in writing with a VIN attached. They had the paperwork prepared when I arrived, I was in and driving away in my new van after about an hour at the dealership. The only downside was that the original van wasn't going to be there in time, but Jonathan promised he'd have one for me when I needed it. He sent me an email with the mileage and transfer location, which indicated that it hadn't been excessively test driven. They were committed to making the deal work. read more

My wife and I had been repeat customers of Shockley Honda, buying new Honda Fits in 2008 and 2012. We were ready to put down a deposit on a new 2015 Honda Fit in my wife's selected hard-to-find color when the deal broke down. Shockley Honda advertises a "dealer match" policy, where they promise to match or exceed (by "up to $1,000") a written quote from another car dealer. We had a quote in hand, but the salesperson came back to us with the MSRP. When I reminded her about the price match policy, she came back with the new car sales manager, Mr. Chapin Painter. He stated that the factory making the Honda Fits was producing another car until September, so there were few left in my wife's color, and none of those were available in 4 local states, so they were not going to follow their own price match policy. We could buy it for MSRP, with no negotiation possible. There was a $1,700 price difference between Shockley and two other dealers. (Note that color is a $0 option.) There was no attempt on the part of Shockley Honda's people to negotiate with me, nor offer a vehicle with a different color. Our feeling was the sales manager had an "I've got the upper hand" attitude. The fact that we were repeat customers did not seem to matter. In fact, the sales manager misrepresented the color availability. Another dealer in Maryland had my wife's top color choice, same as Shockley, and actually tried to negotiate ($1,000 less than Shockley) but they said they were sorry they could not match the price of our internet quote. (I did not even get an "I'm sorry" from the Shockley sales manager, just a bald statement that he simply would not work with us on the price.) My wife and I decided that we would go to a dealer 1.5 hours drive away rather than buy locally. I did e-mail Vice President Marisa Shockley of Shockley Honda telling her about my unhappy experience, but never got a reply. It has been a week since our visit. On two days this week, I got called by two different salespeople asking if I wanted to come back to get a car. I told the first that we had bought at another dealership, and the reply was a noncommittal "Oh, okay." I told the second salesperson that we not only had bought elsewhere, but that Shockley had probably lost a customer. I had to say _why_ I would not be returning before I got an "I'm sorry to hear that" i.e. any sort of response other than "okay". Did these people not even understand or care they lost customers due to a horrible shopping experience, not just a single sale? This is why I am writing this review. It may seem like I am a very hard case negotiator, but I did not set the process for car sales, the dealers did. The people at Shockley made no attempt to negotiate or follow their own written policy when they saw an opportunity to take advantage of a customer- now a former customer. Hands down the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I took my Civic in to have a new rim and tire put on after being involved in an accident. I assumed that it went without saying that I would like a new hubcap put on since the old one was ruined in the accident. The next day I went to pick up my car and I was told to wait in the service bay and that someone would be with me shortly. I waited in the service bay for twenty minutes with two other confused customers before I was finally able to pay and leave. When I walked out to my car I noticed they had not put on a hubcap and they had left the old rim and tire in my car after I had asked them to dispose of it. I went back inside to ask for a new hubcap and they didn't even offer to put it on after they explained that it would need to be attached under the lugnuts. Once I returned home I received an email asking "Tera Armstrong" to rate my service experience at Shockley Honda....my name is spelled Tara and it's included in my email address. Thank you Shockley Honda for employing the most unenthusiastic group of people, without them this review would not have been possible. read more
