First-time shoe-shiner here and I must say the experience was great. I have these amazing leather shoes that weren't looking much like themselves, so off to the shoeshine, I went. Walked in, greeted by two gentlemen...one in the midst of a slipper repair and the other invited me to have a seat. I informed him of my shining needs and he went straight to work. It was only a few seconds when I started to see the shoes I bought months ago. The gentleman was quick, efficient, professional, and courteous. Service: 5/5 Price: 5/5 ($5 + tip) Location: 5/5

So happy I stumbled across the shop one day. I took a pair of my favorite sneakers in to get polished and whitened. I've had them for a couple years the leather started to fray and the white sole starter to turn yellow. These guys brought them back to life. They look brand new. I can't wait to take my other sneakers and boots here. They are extremely nice, fast, affordable and great at their job.

Nice guy, but had 3 bad experiences here. Doesn't know how to repair designer shoes. Better options in the same neighborhood.

What you will find instead is top-notch shoe repair services and quite possible the best shoeshine available on the island of Manhattan -- or pretty much anywhere. Most recently, I took my beat-up, 15-year-old pair of Bruno Magli shoes to be resoled, and the results were stunning. I've had them repaired before with good results in the past, but there was exquisite attention to detail in the contour of the replacement soles; you'd hardly know that they weren't original, unless you know your Bruno Magli! The shoeshine was deep and long-lasting; two weeks after almost-daily use and commuting, there was still almost a mirror-like finish on them. Impressive. The décor and branding wouldn't win any awards, and you don't come here to chat (or to save a few bucks), but the quality of the work could hardly be better.

What everyone doesn't know is how a great shoe shine can completely change your outlook on the day. Most kids grew up being told that no matter what you do in life, make sure you always have clean underwear on. (Which is excellent advice.) Bullet number two on that list should be to always have on freshly-shined shoes. You could roll out of a Dumpster, filthy dirty, and stinking to the high heavens. As long as you have on a pair of shiny black or brown shoes, no one will ever notice. People who take the time to get a shoe shine are in the same class of people who give that extra wipe in the bathroom to make sure their butt is super-clean. They're the people who smile produly at everyone they pass by on the streets because they know how awesome their shiny shoes look on their feet. If you don't believe me, try it one day. Go get a shoe shine and watch how your entire life transforms in front of your face. And no one does a shoe shine better than the guys at Drago. For less than $10 with tip, they will take the ugliest, dirtiest, nastiest shoes you own, and in just a few minutes they will transform them into something that looks better than the day you bought them. They are the best. Trust me when I say there is magic happening in this little pocket of the Port Authority. You just have to discover it in order to believe it.

Shoutouts to Leather Spa bringing it back to life! On top of that, the turnaround time was so fast which meant so much to me. I'm beyond grateful to have my sentimental piece restored so beautifully. I first brought the boots to the Grand Central location and was turned away because apparently only 55th Street (the least accessible NYC location for me) does calf alterations. My boots were 1-1.5" too wide in the calves as I have very narrow legs, and while I was clear that I didn't want them to be tight, I did want them to look more fitted and neater around my legs. I went to 55th Street and intentionally had the boots fitted over jeans, repeatedly telling the store employee that he was cutting off my circulation and needed to loosen the boots. Rather than listen to me and do what I asked, he told me that they could stretch them if they turned out too small. I very adamantly said no, I will not compromise the integrity of the leather by stretching them nor will I agree to have the boots made too small so that additional work will be required. I finally asked him to provide the final measurement and was told it was 13". The boots were originally 14.5" for reference. The boots were ready in just over a week, which already had me concerned since I hadn't requested a rush job. Upon receiving them, I could immediately see that they were two different sizes. The left boot is 12.5" and the right boot is just barely 12.25". They are nearly impossible to zip, the seams were done VERY poorly and not straight, and most importantly, they do not fit without severe pain. I cannot walk in them. I literally can't even move my right ankle. And that's on my bare legs without jeans. I immediately contacted Leather Spa and received a response from Vincent who said it's very common for boots with this type of repair to require additional treatment and that I should bring them back for stretching. Did I not already have this conversation BEFORE I paid $300+ to ruin $2k+ boots??? Vincent insists they are not ruined even after I sent photos showing that they very much are. Further, they didn't even send them back to me nicely - they threw shreds of cut leather pieces inside one of the boots and just sent them off that way as further evidence of the total rush job. I used to frequent Leather Spa 55th and my patronage fell off years ago after they did something very similar to a pair of $300 boots. I was very clear during my visit this time that that could not happen again with my brand new Louboutin boots that were significantly more expensive. Had the employee just told me on the spot that they were going to cut my boots too small and require stretching thereafter, I would've taken the boots, walked out and gotten them repaired elsewhere. Literally the only reason I returned to Leather Spa is because Christian Louboutin recommends them. Never again.

Often, unless the guy is just THAT good, this leaves your shoes looking only half done. Not so at Friend's Shoe Repair! This clean, comfortable tiny store has a staff that definitely does a thorough job. Usually once your shoes are beginning to shine, that signals the end of the shine. Here, the staff takes extra time to clean the edges of the shoes, they buff several times with several different towels and they make sure they get every nook and cranny of your shoes done before saying "Done!" or "Thank you!". I am really impressed by this place and also impressed that they don't cost an arm and a leg (it was just $3 for the shine minus tip). While I've never used this location for shoe repair, I would definitely consider it if I need shoes fixed in the future. As I got my shine done today, I saw about four customers all come in with shoes to fix, and all of them had a comfortable familiarity with the man who did the repairs, telling me that they've been there before. Repeat business on that scale definitely shows people trust this place. In addition to repairs and shines, this store also sells a variety of nick knacks, some related to shoes (such as heel spur cushions, shoe shine equipment and so on) and others that are not (colored key wrappers, batteries etc.). I'm glad I work right across the street from this place since I know I'll be going back the next time I need a shoe shine!

This experience solidifies that rather clearly. I dropped off two brand new pairs of Valentino boots for weatherproofing and taps. I came by this shop this morning to pick up my boots and asked if they could be placed in the inexpensive brown paper bags (every shoe person I have used for the past 30 years uses the same inexpensive brown bags) to keep the leather from scuffing rubbing up against one another during my transit home. The proprietor informs me this is an unusual request and he then proceeds to place my boots into thick plastic bags. Leather wrapped in plastic is a complete no no? He claimed to have been doing this work for 30 plus years yet he tries to place my boots into plastic bags? Clearly uneducated in the materials of leather and the materials that are harmful to leather. He's clearly used to dealing with Skechers so this makes sense. He then tells me I am not educated on fine leather goods because I had front and back taps placed on brand new boots (which I do for all of my luxury footwear). Who would have a leather sole placed onto brand new luxury footwear prior to wearing the footwear for several months for the sole to show a least done sign of wear? Again, he's not that intelligent or educated regarding footwear. Perhaps a Rogue school in other areas, in footwear he needed much additional training because he demonstrated the knowledge of a novice. I'll stick to my great guy that I have been going to for the last decade. I was being lazy yesterday and I did not feel like taking a car to Brooklyn but it's worth the 20 minutes out of my day to do so next time. You deal with low brow establishments and you garner lowbrow results. I am sure this place is great for people that wear inexpensive footwear; and there should be places for that customer. Luckily I'm not that customer so I'll take my business to my amazing shoe guy that has been doing this generationally for 75 years. This was such a disappointment but the best lessons come from bad experiences. If you have luxury footwear this is not your shop. If you wear inexpensive disposable footwear this is the best place for you. Quelle dommage. Negative 1 stars out of 10 stars for this establishment.

I was told they would call me in a day or two to confirm the price but that it wouldn't cost more than $50. I called on 1/2 and was told they weren't ready because they had to order a certain kind of spray to treat the shoe first. I still was not given a price for their work. I told them I needed the shoes before I left town on 1/8 and was told they would be done. When I stopped by on 1/8, I was told to come back the following day, which I couldn't do because of my travel plans. I returned again after my travel on 1/15 and they still weren't done--actually, they hadn't even been touched. In fact, they were thrown underneath a chair in the front of the store. I took the shoes back and will never return. The people who work here are not trustworthy. Their inability to communicate, willingness to straight-up lie, and insistence on blaming me for their own poor customer service is breathtaking. Take your footwear elsewhere!
