We closed this place down on New Year's Eve. Well, maybe not, but we were definitely the last hibachi table still hanging around. The service was much better, and the food was just as awesome, except for some reason this time around I didn't like the soup, and the fiance DID like the salad dressing. The maki we tried this time remained not-half-bad, although I'm still not sure I'd ever come here for JUST sushi. Hibachi is the way to go. We broke in 3 new people and they all agreed it was le yummy. I'm updating my review to 5 stars, RELATIVE to other hibachi places, so keep that in mind. I LOVE Shogun! We've been going here for years, and know most of the staff. They are great with our son, and don't mind if he gets riled up, they like to try to play with him. It's nice feeling at home there. The greated part about Shogun? Half-price sushi nights!! I know it is on Monday and Tuesday night, we usually go on Mondays. You either have to go early or late to beat the crowd, otherwise it's quite a wait for your food. Seriously though, half price sushi? Your bill is cut in half and you can gorge yourself on sushi. Only thing is, you can't get it as take out...it has to be eaten there to get it half price. The hibachi there is amazing. I always get the filet mignon and it never disappoints. I love the decor. The fun tables, and of course the hibachi tables. It's very quaint. They also make some great drinks. We got a lover's bowl once...I don't think I've ever had so much alcohol at once. They have specialty drinks, but not a full bar. We've also ordered the love boat of sushi. It is a ton of sushi! I recommend this place to all my friends and family. The decor of the restaurant is above average. I come here often to enjoy their half off sushi. The sushi is dirt cheap, and the quality is decent. Be prepared to wait forever for service, your drinks, and your food. Sometimes I come here and the waiters talk , dance and prance before they take my order. Oh, Shogun! I can appreciate that you have business savvy and want to be packed to the gills all 7 days of the week. Mo money, mo money, mo money!! I get it. And I get that this is why you have 1/2 priced sushi Mondays and Tuesdays...but oh my, the wait time and the service have gotten completely horrendous! My husband and I come here once a month on a Monday night for their special. We've enjoyed it for almost three years now but we may have to look for other options. Either that or eat a little snack before coming so we won't be salivating when nearby tables are served, or loudly banging our chopsticks on the table. In order to stave off our hunger this time, we ordered salads....which were pretty darned awesome. The chef salad has shrimp and crabmeat over mixed greens and tomatoes, with a ginger soy house dressing. It could use a little more meat on top for $5, but the dressing was really tasty so I didn't make a big deal out of it. Their sushi is good and more people were bound to find out about the 1/2 price nights. It's just getting crazy crowded. This is my favorite go-to place for sushi. SImple rolls, prepared well with fresh fish, and affordable. Oh, and they let you BYOB!! Oh, and on Monday and Tuesday nights you get 1/2 price sushi and it's just as good! I love the place! The shrimp tempura has ruined all others for me. Simple- shrimp, rice, eel sauce. So good. They also have a spicy tuna roll, wrapped in cucumber instead of rice that is fantastic! When I lived in Drexel Hill, this was my go-to spot for sushi mainly because of the fact that it's BYOB AND awesome half price deal on Monday and Tuesday nights (and for lunch time). Now, I come from the depths of Philadelphia once in a while to indulge on cheap, delicious sushi and a bottle (or two) of wine. There's nothing fancy about Shogun whatsoever, and that's why I like it so much. And yes, service can be slow and sometimes the, but the sushi is cheap and tastes fresh so it's no big deal to pass the time chatting it up with dinner dates. For now, I am giving this place a two. The exterior decorations are what drew my boyfriend and I inside. It just looked different and interesting, which isnt an easy feat to achieve when located within a strip mall. Upon entering, I took note of the fact that they had hibachi tables, regular seating, and also the low tables where you can sit on pillows on the floor, which also scored points with me. However, I have no more praises to sing after this. The service that we received was so much worse than "slow". It was negligent, and really did border on begrudging and rude. It took oveer ten minutes for someone to comee take our drink when we sat down. From there, if we needed refills, or anything else, we really did have to flag down a staff member (I caught one rolling her eyes at me too). I used to be a server, and that sort of behavior really gets to me. I should add that we were there on a Thursday night, and the place was close to empty. The food was average. It was good, but not the best I've had. I did debate giving this place a three, but I changed my mind because I do not believe that really gets across the level of service we received. In conclusion, we live two minutes from here, so will probably end up giving it another try. If we experience anything different, I would be totally psyched to adjust this review, but I am not sure what to expect after last time. read more

Hibachi! Steak it up here for a fun and filling experience. Not my first or last visit. Skip the white tuna if you're a fish rookie. The good: steak (tender and lean), chicken, rice (brown and hearty), shrimp, veggies. Fun participating entertainment at the Hibachi. Good bang for the buck. Good for families and kids or casual fun dates. 3$ domestic bottles. The meh: At my last visit I decided to try a table instead of the flattop common. This meek server was not very knowledgeable in anything food and had less patients when we demanded she ask. She did honor our requests when pressured, so I forgive. If you don't have the fight in you then you best skip the tables and join the hibachi group. CAUTION: The white tuna here is escolar not albacore, or at least I conclude by reverse engineering. Yep, with some interweb digging I found that this snake mackerel is tasty enough to be nicknamed butterfish, but it is not of the tuna species. Consumption must be limited or avoided all together, if not... you've scored a ticket to wow chip $h!ts. Yep, our bodies treat the fats in this fish kinda like it treats olestra, we can't digest it. My results were so bazaar that I had to search the World Wide Web with specific detail in query. Result número uno...... and 10 results after that we're the same thing I had for dinner. Tip: Albacore (the more expensive actual tuna) is pinkish when raw and escolar is off white; both are white when cooked. Both are commonly called white tuna. Some folks actually think it's common knowledge to know about albacore (obviously not me). The internet is littered with details and I encourage the research. Aside from the fishy business my experiences here are positive and I give 4 stars simply bc not everyone serves true lean filet and they do at such reasonable price. This is my favorite sushi in all of Pennsylvania. I am there at least once a week and I travel about 25 minutes to get there. Half priced sushi on Monday and Tuesday is a real game changer, but I would also pay full price for these rolls. I love the shrimp tempora, dragon roll, and rainbow roll. I get them every time and each and every time they are consistently delicious. It's also BYOB, like as if they needed to do anything to make this place any better. BYOB and the best sushi in town = an amazing chill date spot. The service is slow though, but I get it because they have like two guys rolling the sushi by hand for the entire restaurant. This is my second time here. So before I get into my second visit here I will talk about my first visit here 2 years ago. I came in to a nice restaurant with nice decor. I place was not as crowded so I'm guessing the service would be quicker. WRONG! I waited 30 minutes for them to make my food. All I ordered was 2 rolls! California and eel rolls. Simple and easy! What a wonderful dinner experience here at Shogun 3. We came here tonight for my son's birthday. The three of us ordered Hibachi, I had filet mignon and shrimp, my husband had chicken and filet mignon and our son had filet mignon and lobster, everything from the miso soup, salad with ginger dressing to the fried rice, sauces, vegetables and shrimp was outstanding. The service was wonderful and the woman were very attentive and very nice. Our Hibachi Chef was very good and very nice, performed a great show too. After we all finished the server brought out a birthday surprise for my son it was tempura fried ice cream sundae with a sparkler and she banged a gong and everyone at the table sang happy birthday, what a wonderful ending to the night and my son had a nice birthday dinner. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I should have read the reviews regarding their service before coming. This girl "Jennifer" basically threw our food on the table, not a single word, not even a smile and forget about asking if there is anything else you need while dining in. After we finished our meal, we waited and waited but no one was even paying attention, I walked to the front desk and ask for a box, ready to pay. A nice little establishment in the great neighborhood (admittedly biased) of Havertown, PA. On this particular visit we treated the boys to a Hibachi style dinner. There in lies the best part, getting a kick out of watching the boys enjoying the show put on by the chef. We started with a bowl of Edamame. They are steamed and well seasoned with sea salt. Heck, the 19 month old devoured the protein filled beans with me. The 4 year old has reached the age where he feels the color green is better suited for his favorite football team than food. The fare is standard Hibachi. I have had better, I have had worse. I really wish that the service was a little bit better. The entire staff could have been friendlier. Maybe we caught them on an off night (hardly an excuse), but it appears as if this a continued trend on Yelp reviews. All in all though, I recommend this as a nice change of pace dining event and experience that the entire family will enjoy. read more

This place has always been somewhat decent, but my recent visit was worth a review. As soon as we walked in, there was a woman who was texting and refused to look up or greet/seat us, and a chicken bone on the floor. The fish in the sushi case looked rancid, and the counter behind the front podium was crumby and dirty. I was appalled. The salad was ok, but watery, and the soup was greasy and didn't taste fresh. Our server was much more friendly and filled our drinks. The entrees were pretty good, but my calamari was lacking flavor. We went on a Sunday evening. It was quiet with most of the activity taking place in the open hibachi area. My boyfriend and I opted for the more tranquil, private dining area sectioned off to the side. Our servers were attentive and the food was satisfactory. The passionfruit sake martini was soft and sweet. The vegetable tempura was very crispy, yet soft in all the right places.i enjoyed the variety of veggies that was served to me, my favorite being the sweet potato tempura and the broccoli. The chicken katsu was on par. The breading was perfect, as was the dipping sauce, but the texture of the chicken left much to be desired as it tasted especially chewy that night. The gyozas were as good as I expected them to be, although I suspected they were not the vegetable ones we ordered. We paid a very good price for dinner for satisfactory food and ambience. I enjoyed the traditional feel of the restaurant, although I disliked squeezing past the bar area to get to my seat. I currently reside in Yeadon as of this review and I would recommend Shogun as a destination for Japanese cuisine, especially for the mixed drinks with sake if you live within or near the area. read more

This place is absolutely phenomenal and is my favorite restaurant of all time, for the reasons stated below. DESIGN- It has traditional Japanese lanterns hung on the ceiling, to add more of a cultural effect as you dine, there's grills that are placed next to the tables that are used by the chef's to perform hibachi (in front of you!), and even a fish tank filled with idiosyncratic creatures. SERVICE- Although the service can be a little iffy sometimes when you go there, I would say about 90% of the time, it's amazing with the timing, and the waiters/waitresses are excellent when it comes to getting orders correct. I, nor my family, have ever had an experience where our orders were incorrect. FOOD- Do I even need to explain? It's SO DELICIOUS! From the most tender, exuberant hibachi steak, to crispy, exquisite Philly rolls and sushi, this place will always keep your tastebuds happy. Not to mention, the chefs that cook in front of you perform amazing tricks that are so cool, and will keep you entertained while eating. Shogun has been a constant in my life for many years. It serves as a quality restaurant for many occasions, meals, cravings, and evenings. Many years ago, I would love coming here for friends birthdays in big groups and having the back room to ourselves. More recently, I have loved their half-priced sushi options on Mondays and Tuesday. No, it isn't the highest quality sushi, but if you're smart with what you order (tempura, spicy tuna, salmon) in terms of rolls you will enjoy it; plus, the cost is a STEAL. I was just here tonight for a birthday dinner with family and had the filet hibachi, with the calamari appetizer. Calamari was good; lightly fried, hot, and not rubbery at all. Not crazy flavorful, but well pre-pared. Filet was prepared well, along with the rice and the veggies. Chef was terrific, fun, and really made the experience great. read more

Granted, I haven't been there in some time, but when I frequented this place at least once a month about two-three years ago, this place was good. By "good", I mean, the sushi was decently priced, the drinks were adequately filled with alcohol, and the waiters were decent with customer service. One bad experience - there was a waiter who seemed to be a bit frantic and messed up our orders, and would then rarely check up on us to see if we needed anything (which we did). During our 3 hour dinner, he might have checked up on us voluntarily maybe once. He also seemed frantic and unsure of himself when talking to other employees. Oh well, maybe he was new. I love this place! I have never gone to the hibachi section so I don't know about that but just for standard dining this place can not be beat. I only wish I was closer It is a bit pricier than other japanese fare in the area but the quality is better I would say- you can really taste the freshness of the food especially in the maki rolls and sushi. They also have really good lunch and dinner meals that really fill you up (try the bento boxes). I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about when it comes to the service. I have never been there on a really busy night but when i have been there the staff was polite and attended to our needs very well. I was looking forward to eating here tonight with my friend due to rave reviews I've gotten from my parents & neighbors but the only thing I have to rave about it how HORRIBLE the service was! The food was average - nothing special & a bit overpriced for the quality. Then upon ordering my meal we were graced with a new male waiter who proceeded to showcase complete disinterest in either of us, almost to the point where he seemed offended that we would order food from this establishment & had better things to do with his time then take our food order. Come to think of it, I don't even think he showed eye contact with either of us once! When I went to give him my meal order with brown rice (something several of people have told me they serve since they've ordered it before) I was rejected this request & told they never have brown rice. When my friends meal of teriyaki chicken was served we had to wait 10 mins until my 1 sushi roll was finally delivered to our table. Throughout our meal, NOT ONCE did our waiter come back to ask how our food was & if we needed anything! May I also just say, this would have been understandable if they were busy but we were 1 of 4 occupied tables! When it came time for the check we were graced with a 3rd new male waiter, this guy was very nice but I think he was actually the busboy & didn't want to cause trouble so when we asked for the check he delivered it. However, after receiving our check we were left unattended for 20 MINUTES & my friend went to the front to ask if she could get change - completely unacceptable!!! Needless to say this was the first time I've ever left a restaurant without tipping someone - this is your job, if you want to get payed for it like the rest of society does then work for it like the rest of us do. Came here w/ my girlfriend on Tuesday for dinner when they coincidently had "half off" sushi. We were greeted by an older guy who RUDELY took our order, and treated us like we never had sushi before. After a 20-25minute wait we got our food. The food was decent.. Nothing to brag about, our rolls were cold but still tasted decent. Being hungry we ordered a variety of sushi rolls and ended up not finishing them. We asked the waiter for the check, a box to take our leftovers home and to our surprise he said they do not allow "take out because it's half off sushi today, which is almost like all you can eat." Thats ridiculous!! We're here paying for our food and cannot take our leftovers home. I told him that's the first time I heard of such a weird policy and he angrily replied "What do you mean it's weird?!" First off, fall back on the attitude dude. It's understandable to not allow people to order take out and leave on half off days. But we sat down, ordered what we wanted, couldn't finish our food and asked to take it home. Regardless, if I ordered more food and took it back home it would be more business and money for them! I should've left without tipping but being generous we left leaving 15%. If there were sushi bars better than average in this area I'd leave these guys 1 star. Since they're the only ones with AVERAGE sushi around here, I'm leaving 2 for PITY.
