Clean, good variety. Service pretty fast. I liked how they offered at the end to do separate checks. My tonkatsu ramen broth was very thin and not very savory, the cha shu so crumbled it looked like ground meat. The noodles were nice and thin. Been here few times now. Amazing food. We tried various sushi rolls, regular and fried and they're all delicious. We tried the Gyoza and it's great! The sushi fried rolls include dynamite, dinosaur, mango, amazing, Hawaiian. For the regular rolls, we tried the spicy salmon, spicy tuna, spicy shrimp, and Philadelphia. Service was relatively quick given how busy on that day. Even though the place is not that big inside, the noise level was not that high. Will come back for sure to try other seafood. read more

I ordered a takeout lunch special of two sushi rolls from here recently - spicy tuna and Alaska. It came with a choice of miso soup or salad and I chose the salad. The interior of the restaurant is classy and it was recently crowded for lunchtime. The sushi rolls were decent and a solid choice if you're in the area. I've dined in at this place several times before and always loved it, but this was my first time trying their takeout -- and wow, it did not disappoint! The sushi and sashimi were incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and packed with care. Everything tasted just as amazing as it does when dining in -- from the tender sashimi slices to the flavorful specialty rolls. We also ordered a variety of appetizers like tempura, dumplings, and fried shrimp, and they all arrived crispy and hot. Even the dipping sauces and garnishes were thoughtfully included. In a quiet development, this place is unexpectedly good to visit. Fairly new place, still very clean. BYOB is nice so that one can take own favorite for sure. Fish used for sushi was fairly good along with Tuna rolls. It was good variety for sure. I am not in favor of those devolated sushi rolls; so, their caterpiller roll came with "sushi for two" was not my taste. I probably should have asked substitute when ordering. Sushi pieces were nicely done, except ones came with rather sweet source on top. I shall go back and check their regular sushi along with their ramen. Tried 3 take out 'special raw' rolls from Otaka. Since this review doesn't 'need' to focus on what we had, I am not going to note the rolls we got. Why? Because we independently came to the same result - the rolls were only meh tasting. We have many sushi restaurants in the Newtown Square area - unless a friend wants to try Otaka, we're once and out. The overall presentation of the restaurant looks very nice and elevated. We got the shrimp tempura which was delicious and was much bigger than other places I've tried. I tried the chicken pad thai but unfortunately wasn't my favorite. Our waiter was incredibly nice and wanted to ensure I would like my food. I reordered and got katsu chicken. The katsu chicken was DELICIOUS but I really wish the curry bowl was much bigger because that was the star of the dish. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with our meal. read more

Tried this place for the first time tonight & it did not disappoint! We loved it! Had some apps, I love gyoza & bao buns & they had so many great tasty options!! Everything was so good!! I'm typically skeptical of restaurants that claim to specialize in both sushi and some other type of cuisine. I have to admit though that Otaka was pleasantly surprising. I had the Ichi Spicy Ramen and it was fantastic. The noodles had just the right amount of firmness, the broth was flavorful but not overly salty, and the pork was tender and tasty. I also had an eel and avocado roll because I had to know if Otaka could truly be good at both sushi and ramen. Turns out they are! The service was also great. Very helpful and people seemed genuinely happy to be there. I'm so glad they decided to open in Newtown Square. I'm definitely looking forward to going back. read more

I really hate to write negative reviews like this. As someone who used to work at a restaurant, I think I have a lot of patience towards restaurants when service is less than quality. Tonight, however, was probably my worst experience ever in a Japanese restaurant. I was really looking forward to our meal, but we left with empty stomachs. Tonight was a Wednesday, and upon entering the restaurant, there were only 3 open tables. It was surprisingly full, but I noticed that not a single person had food in front of them. It seemed weird, and I pointed it out to my boyfriend, but this restaurant is brand new and we wanted to give them a chance. We were seated and within 10 minutes, placed an order for 1 miso soup, 2 special rolls, and 2 bowls of ramen. We brought our own wine. About 3 minutes after placing our order, we immediately received the miso soup. The chunks of tofu in the broth were tiny and the flavor was diluted; it was obviously instant miso, not homemade. Not uncommon, but not pleasant either. But we waited.... and we waited... and after checking my phone, I realized 30 minutes passed. It was 7:30 PM and my stomach was starting to hurt. Our waiter was seen running in and out of the kitchen, empty-handed. The sushi chefs went from 2 to 3. We saw them cutting and pounding fish, but no plates were being served. Surrounding tables were looking frustrated as well without their food. Eventually, our waiter returns and tells us our food is running late. He asks "is it ok if your ramen comes out first? Our sushi chefs are backed up." I was not super happy about this and I should have asked for the check then, but we STILL wanted to give them a chance and at least try the ramen. I knew I wouldn't touch the sushi at this point, but we still said "Sure that's fine".... and then we waited again. And we waited.... for another 15 minutes... Our waiter vanished, and we didn't see him again for the rest of the night. I wish he had at least tried to check on us or offer compensation. We sat for a total of 50 minutes in Otaka tonight. After that, we threw a $5 on the table for the soup and quietly walked out (something I would NEVER do and have never done before). Ultimately, this was the first disappointing restaurant experience I've had in many years, and based on the reviews so far, I wasn't expecting this at all. It's only fair to share my experiences to warn others. I will give this place a second chance in a few months, once they've had time to figure out their management and get service to a better standard. I'll post an update to this review at that time. For now, AVOID this place, especially on weekends!!! This was only a Wednesday! read more

I recently had takeout from Otaka and it was really delicious. My husband and I had a Philadelphia roll, a tuna avocado roll , a shrimp tempura roll and yellowtail sashimi. Everything was very fresh and flavorful. Best sushi I've had in a while. The rolls are full of fish , not just one little piece. The prices are not outrageous either.
