I've driven past this restaurant many times and finally took the plunge. Service was fast and friendly, the lighting was good and the room size adequate. My appetizer, Tuna Tataki, really stole the show for me. The combination of the lightly seared Tuna and cucumber really hit the spot. Very savory as well as invigorating. My wife enjoyed her Hibachi Chicken and Philadelphia roll, two classic items that need no explanation. Now for the Beef Udon Soup, I didn't know what to expect but I was surprised in a good way. A ton of food in a nice chicken broth. It's the little things though, for example the way the green onions were sliced. I would recommend this Japanese steakhouse. This is a really good Japanese restaurant with hibachi and sushi. They have a good variety of choices on their menu and the portions are plentiful. The service is always great, with servers that are always willing to answer any questions or get anything you might want or need. They always check to see that your food and service is satisfactory. The dining area is modern, clean and well kept. While this is a Hibachi restaurant it is not one where they cook at your table, if you enjoy the "show" that you get at those types of Hibachi restaurants this one is not the one for that. read more

I've been here twice so far and the prices are very reasonable. The sushi is good (I usually just go after the salmon, so I can't comment on much of the other rolls that don't have it), and they were willing to make small alterations to my order when requested. Upon arrival to this restaurant I noticed the ambieance was quite nice. Lighting was low and music was playing quietly. I usually read the reviews before trying a new restaurant, but my coworker picked this one. I praised her for picking a restaurant that looked clean and didn't smell odd. There was quite a bit to choose from on the menu. After choosing the hibachi filet and shrimp, I finally made up my mind on a shrimp tempura roll. She brought out the soup and salad. The salad dressing was mayonnaise based, so I did not eat my salad. It is the only dressing they have. My entree was amazing! The filet was cooked so well. Overall, I wouldn't order another roll and I would decline the soup and salad, but would order the same entree. read more

Some of the worst sushi I've ever had in my life, I couldn't finish the pile of old vegetables and rice with a hint of eel that they served me as a "dragon roll." The rice had obviously not been properly flavored and the avocado was soft, slimy and warm. The cucumber was very old and made up the majority of the roll. I don't know the quality of the eel because I could barely tell there was any in the roll. The barbecue sauce was not the sauce typically used on eel rolls. The fried rice was ok and the teriyaki was actually pretty good, though I don't know who told the chef that teriyaki was supposed to be the Asian equivalent of a fajita. The atmosphere is very dark and cramped. The serve hibachi meals for typical hibachi restaurants prices even though they do not have hibachi tables. Part of the high price of hibachi restaurants is the show put on by a talented chef, the prices on their menu should be lowered accordingly. The ONLY reason I am giving the restaurant 2 stars is the service. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive throughout the meal. read more

Sushi would get 3.5 stars. It was ok on fresh - great combo roles. Hibachi would get 0 - seriously don't even try it. My rare filet mignon came out looking like small lumps of charcoal - boo! The shrimp tasted like it had been made on a burnt grill (maybe where my crispy steak came from)? The veggies felt more steamed than sautéed. Not sure if they've got a new sushi chef since earlier reviews, buy whatever the change, this is hands down the best sushi in the tristate. The ambience is terrific with low lights and modern decor. The hibachi is good but no better than you can get elsewhere. The sushi and appetizers are the stars here. Service is hit or miss but generally good. There is no where else I enjoy more on a Friday evening to relax and enjoy good food. Perfect for a date or chat with friends as they have a full bar and a chill atmosphere. read more

We have eaten at Shogun several times. The food has always been fresh and exactly what we asked for. For example, when I ask for my steak to be cooked med-rare, they actually serve it to me that way. The servers are great and I like the atmosphere. You don't have to wait forever to get your food, it is served hot and there is plenty of it. No it doesn't have the hibachi tables, but neither does it have the grease, smoke, strangers, and you don't have to try to communicate with your cook, who may or may not be able to understand what you are saying I'm happy to finally have a nice, CLEAN Japanese Steakhouse in Ashland. And it's in a nice area that's easy to park in and get in and out of, unlike Huntington. read more

I want to start off by saying that I went to this restaurant without reading any reviews because I wanted to offer an unbiased opinion. Location: 4/10. This place is tucked away in a small shopping center near the Ashland mall. It is right by a dialysis center which is convenient because you will likely need to schedule an appointment after your meal. Service 2/10. I would have rated the service lower but I did have some sympathy for the wait staff. This place is alarmingly understaffed. It took 10 minutes just to get a couple of waters to our table and the restaurant was less than half full. I recommend calling in your beverage order ahead of time if you plan on dining in. Quality -1/10. I ordered the Spicy Roll Combo which included 3 sushi rolls. I have consumed a vast variety of sushi in my lifetime and this is undoubtedly the worst. The "filling" looked very similar to Crest's Cinnamon toothpaste but I assure you it is far less appetizing. This was the first time I've ever eaten a meal that tasted like nothing. I eat at shoguns often. I usually get the sushi and it's always incredible. I decided to go for something different and tried the shrimp tempura and the soft shell crab. I got them to go so they boxed everything up with the special sauce inside. They didn't close the lids on EITHER "special sauce" which when I got home, discovered was spilled all over the inside of each dish we bought. The chicken teriyaki, the salads, even our soups were covered in the sauce... both the soft shell crab and shrimp tempura are described as "lightly fried" and they were both COVERED in breading an inch thick and the inside was of the breading was mushy, along with the meat. Everything was absolutely disgusting. No seasoning. I couldn't even eat it. I'm not sure what happened because it's usually amazing. Really disappointed and still hungry.. read more

Having dined here for lunch twice before and finding the food not too bad, I suggested to my husband we dine for dinner on our first wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, it ended up being a mistake of rather gargantuan proportions. There was one server for a restaurant soon filling up with more and more people, a kitchen hand clearing tables with a trolley of filthy dishes, often leaving the trolley very close to people still dining, and someone we assumed was the manager occasionally around asking diners how they were enjoying their meal. The server brought us our appetizers, which were tepid. My shrimp dumplings were not too bad but my husband couldn't eat more than one crab Rangoon as the sauce used to glue each crab Rangoon to the plate was overly sweet and was mismatched to this type of appetizer. We got our mains and tasted them. It was clear they were also nowhere near hot. My chicken hibachi was too dry and had obviously been diced prior to grilling instead of the other way around; my fried rice tasted very strange and as if something was slightly "gone over" in it (I wondered if it was the egg). My husband's tempura chicken & vegetables was so bland it was clear to him that no effort to season the batter had been made. He tried my rice and had to spit it out into his napkin as it was definitely tasting very bad to him. We sat for a very long time until our appetizer plates were taken away; no query was given into the fact that almost every crab Rangoon was untouched. We sat for an EXTREMELY long time waiting for our plates to be taken from us when it was clear we were not eating. The server walked past us several times and attended to other tables; he never came back to our table. The manager finally noticed we were not eating and asked if we were enjoying our meal. We said no, and explained why. My husband was told he obviously didn't realise what he had ordered while I was told I didn't know how hibachi was prepared. I told her I do and that I had had this dish in many Japanese restaurants in various countries. She mumbled "Sorry" and took our plates. A good while later she presented us with our bill - no effort to comp our meals had been made and no-one came to our table to take our payment. We finally went to the front desk and had to wait for several minutes while the staff chatted until the manager came to take our payment. Still no offer to comp any part of our meal. We paid and left the restaurant. Interestingly, in his haste to leave, my husband forgot his coat. I went back to get it and they didn't seem to want to give it to me so I went to the chair over which it still hung and took it. Overall, probably the most disappointing meal I have had in the longest time. We will never recommend this restaurant or either of its other locations to anyone we know. If only the staff had had a different attitude, we might have even come back. In a city labelled by Forbes Magazine in 2014 as "America's Most Miserable City", you'd think Shogun of Ashland, KY would have made more of an effort with people who actually know what good food is. read more

Great Sushi, great service, bad customer service....is that even possible? Yes, if the manager of this restaurant is concerned. About 1/2 way through a pleasant dining experience, one of our servers accidentally spilled my beer, saki & soup, when his serving tray slipped, honestly , I've been there, no harm no foul. Everyone was very apologetic, all good....not so fast , when I received my bill, much to my disgust , I was charged for the beer and 2 other items that were included in a combo order. Probably an oversight, I pointed out to server, who apologized again and scurried away to rectify this overcharge. She returned with yet another apology, my manager removed the two items you shouldn't have been charged for , but she is still charging you for 1/2 the spilled beer, REALLY. I paid the bill still tipped the servers for their efforts, accidents happen . I wanted to express my distain to the manager, who at first directed me to another employee. After she owned her job , I told her how I felt, still very wet! Anyway she made no attempt to make me feel like a valued customer, so I'm out! Extra credit to server who tried to apologize again, no apology for bad Management and disregard for a customer ! read more

My wife and I are in town visiting for the long weekend and decided to take our son to Shogun for dinner last night. The waitress was very nice, but inexperienced. I had lived in Japan so I started rattling off the dishes we wanted and she had to ask me to point them out on the menu. I had no problem with that, though. Better that she admitted inexperience than getting the orders wrong. Once we got our food, I was very impressed. My wife had the beef negamaki, and she loved it. She had the seaweed salad as well, and it was quite good. I had never had octopus salad and found it exceptional. Our son had a regular side salad and the Flower roll, which he said was also quite good. I ordered the Chirashi Don. Sashimi scattered over sushi rice. I was amazed at the quality of the fish here in Kentucky. I really expected it to be pretty humble, but it was exceptional. The only thing that was slightly off was the rice. It wasn't quite perfect consistency for sushi rice. Had a few crunchy spots. It wasn't a deal breaker by any means, it just needs a bit of work. All in all, Shogun is a superb Japanese restaurant in a place where I never expected to get good sushi or other Japanese dishes. read more

It would be much better to carry the tray to bus the table rather than push a cart on the bumpy tile floor. Service was very good as well. Sad. It was just sad the hibachi dinner was soaked in some weird watered down sauce. The sauce was terrible in itself. The fried rice that came with it was gross and had poor flavor. My fam and I were really excited to try this place. Was craving some umami flavors. We ended up trying a few different dishes including the vegetable fried rice, age tofu, seaweed salad, and the teriyaki tofu. The entrees came with soup and salad. We were starving. The soup: Basic broth, decent flavors but missing a number of ingredients to be a real miso. It satisfied our salty desires and was a bright spot in an otherwise lackluster experience. The salad: some pieces of iceberg in a styrofoam box. Guess I should have known and shouldn't complain too much. It seemed fresh enough. The vegetable fried rice: For one entree, you get enough fried rice to feed a small army. And that's the problem -- you get an enormous quantity of very bad, very oily, rice mixed with limp vegetables that both appear and taste like they've been sitting around for days. We asked for it to be spicy but there was practically no flavor besides oil and salt. The tofu teriyaki: Where to start? One of the worst dishes I've eaten in recent memory. The tofu was old, the breaded coating on the tofu was practically uncooked, and doused in a cold overly sweet attempt at teriyaki. There were a few carrots in the dish that seemed mildly fresh, again the highlight of the dish. Yikes! Eater beware. We all agreed that if you put enough sauce (including a mix of soy sauce, sriracha sauce, duck sauce, etc) on the food, it could be edible. But the take-out experience all in all was massively disappointing and I would be shocked if I eat here again. Shogun, you have defeated me. Must hire family members as one waitress had no problem sitting with other patrons. The food tastes okay but is not prepared as described on the menu. Hot food was served lukewarm. My wife and I used to eat here all of the time. We liked it because we could get vegan sushi rolls and gyoza. The Tuesday night special on sushi was always nice. The last 2 times we have gone on Tuesday, they did not apply the special discount, which sucks. After eating there tonight, I won't go back. We were waited on by children. The teenager that took our order wouldn't even write it down. We overheard the next table complaining that they received the wrong item, so we ordered half of what we normally do, just to minimize any chance of mistakes. While taking our order, the girl also asked if we wanted our food to come out at the same time (my wife ordered appetizers and I ordered sushi). I said yes, but it didn't matter. My wife had her appetizers way, way before I got any food. The gyoza was cold in the middle, the broccoli roll was undercooked and slimy, and the sweet potato roll was awful.
