This is no Benihana's, but it's pretty much a small town version of it. Food is adequate, nothing too special. Friendly people. One thing they do at this restaurant that makes me a little upset (considering diabetes runs in my family so when I see white sugar, it sends red flags to me) is that they add sugar to their fried rice. I have been here 3 times (one for the sushi, one for lunch, and one for the teppanyaki). This place is horrible. As said by a hostess/waitress/server, "he is one of the best hibachi chefs in NM." Ummm ok....no. The sushi is mediocre, I hate to say it but it seems like they don't receive any training or apprenticeship when it comes to Japanese cuisine. The one trend I have noticed in this town is that business owners seem to slap a name and categorize their food to try to diversify the food types here. If you're going to be a Japanese restaurant then take the Chinese food off the menu and the Chinese decor. Use a Noren correctly....it's not a decoration. Buy better quality fish if not stop offering nigiri and sashimi. Teach your waiters/waitresses to know what toro, uni, unagi, etc...mean. No, hibachi is not the same as teppanyaki..... I didn't have huge expectations ordering sushi in the middle of New Mexico, in the small town of Clovis no less. Shogun Steak House met those expectations and nothing more. On the plus, Shogun's has a cool interior with relatively private seating. Also, we experienced surprisingly fast service as well... perhaps it was because we ventured there on a Tuesday night, but I'll take it. The sushi was average, heavy on the rice and cucumbers and light on the fish, but considering their geographic location I find that a smart move. I don't know that I'd return to Shogun. I think the big issue for me is the massive amount of sugar in the food. It just really kills it for me. On the other hand, kids love food with lots of "snow" (sugar). I only tried the Japanese grill so this review is limited to this selection. We arrived early, which I think is a good idea because man does this place fill to capacity. I think it must be a very popular place in Clovis. We were seated with another family and the kids really got a kick out of the whole show. The chef was fantastic about interacting with the kids and making them laugh. The food was fairly good until the sugar was added. I added a lot of hot mustard and soy sauce to cut the taste, but wouldn't bother returning again. Maybe you can ask for your portion to have no sugar? It was super weird. After we were served, the checks came quickly and we were able to pay at the counter. It was fun and a nice spot to get together with friends. Kids were engaged and had a fantastic time. I wouldn't go for the food, but there are some pretty awesome advantages especially if you have kids. The waiting area even has a fish pond and bridge that the kids can climb all over. Went there waitress forgot to get enough chairs for our group then did not add one of our guests meal for the cook. The cook was awesome! The waitress also spilled a drink on our group. In the end we were automatically charged gratuity instead of giving us the option to put it ourself. This used to be a really good place going downhill. read more

This place is awesome to take out of town guests or friends looking to share an experience and a good meal! The sushi is the best in the area (for where we live). The kabuki grill comes with a friendly chef and cheesy jokes with a show. The wait service averages ok, everything I've had from the grill is good but if you have a shellfish allergy let the cook know from the beginning as it's all cooked together. Also note that they don't seat you till your whole party is present! 3 stars because it is good for the area and a solid restaurant choice when in Clovis but in a larger town it wouldn't be anything special. read more

Like other reviewers have stated, all the food tastes the same. They shovel some mixture of salt/sugar type seasoning over EVERYTHING on the grill, so nothing has a distinct flavor. I've been to Japan and I've been to Japanese steakhouses in the states, so I have plenty to compare this place to and this one, by far, is THE saddest place I've been to. It's also filthy and dusty inside...food particles on walls, dusty plants, cobwebs in the lobby ceiling. This place is a gem! My favorite restaurant here in Clovis. I can't believe we waited so long to give it a try! They have a decent selection of sushi and excellent selection of hibachi. The ambience is great for date night or family dinner. Service was quick and courteous and the prices are fair. Portions are more than generous. The yum yum sauce is the bomb! My only grumble here is that they don't have cowboy rolls! All I need is some sushi with a little steak in it and I'd eat here everyday! read more

Very disappointed with this place. Went in tonight paid 65 dollars for the imperial dinner for 2. But nothing about it was imperial. Steak was a poor cut. Then after paying 65 dollars for the meal they charge additional for fried rice. Service was sub par for pricing. Chef did a great job performing that is the only reason this place gets 2 stars. Well shogun was my husband's favorite restaurant in Clovis. We ordered a steak and shrimp and omg bearly got any food asked for medium rare and got well done steak. This is the 2nd time I ordered here to go and it was horrible we will not be going here any more. read more

Usually I would give Shogun a decent rating but today was a special circumstance and for the amount of money that I usually spend there, which for a party of six is easily over $200.00, I expected some flexibility. I'm hoping that this reaches the owners of the restaurant because if I was the owner I would be upset. It is my son's birthday and we wanted one of the private rooms that sit about 8. They refused to give us a room and sat us with a bunch of other people. My son was upset because it wasn't a personal experience so we asked for the check, paid for our drinks and left. Considering the location (Clovis), I was fairly impressed. The first sign that the area is not used to Japanese food, was when I saw forks on the table instead of chop sticks. Usually you have to ask for western eating utensils at a Japanese place. The food was decent and the chef was entertaining. I think his name was Charlie. The prices were average for the type of restaurant it is. My steak and chicken were cooked correctly and I loved the grilled veggies. The soup was weird, not sure if was supposed to be Miso or not. Went here to get a night out with a group of friends. I should have had them over and cooked instead. So we asked for a table with grill to get hibachi. Our party of 6 was seated at the grill with another couple. Which is okay I get that the grills are expensive, but this is CLOVIS New Mexico. Not a real city where land is actually valuable and I would expect this. But whatevs, I'll move on. So the hibachi cook did put on a good show, but seeing how the food was actually made was not comforting. The amount of sugar and salt put on everything from steak to rice was equal to what I would use in my homemade fudge recipe. To me, this tactic seems like an easy way to cover up bad ingredients and lack of quality spices. One of the girls in my party, after flinching at the sugar bucket, asked how many calories the fried rice had. Instead of the " I'll get you the nutrition facts" or "I'll get back to you", we got a laughing "you don't want to know". The sushi was okay, especially for a land locked state. The roll choice screamed mediocrity though. There wasn't anything super fancy and yet there wasn't the simple fish and rice rolls to offset the hibachi sugar high. We have a gift certificate dated Nov. 2019 in Clovis, NM...Due to all the lock down, mask issues, Covid, etc., we didn't get a chance to use it as it. We decided to go out to Shoguns and read and realized it was only good for ONE year. When I called to ask if they would honor the certificate, they said we could have used it for carryout but chose not to....I guess they are right...I would THINK that they would give a little compassion. Anyway, $100.00 down the drain.... Thanks for adding to the already screwed up food service business. Overall the food was okay. The chef was fun...but there was a huge lack of service. We ordered drinks that were never delivered, never got refills on water or soda. Ate the entire meal with nothing to drink and never saw the waitress until checkout. Too much teriyaki poured all over everything, from the rice to the lobster. I thought the chef was dumping mass amounts of salt on the food while cooking but turns out it was sugar..probably 6-7 tablespoons on every item. And the women's bathroom wreaked a horrible smell. Well the first thing you notice is the sweet smell of grease trap as you walk in the door. After that don't look down to the floor or baseboards...they look gross. Also expect everything to be a little dirty for the first 10 min. As soon as the chef arrives though prepare to be entertained and to enjoy yourself. Be sure to get the large hot saki and keep them coming. Don't worry about being picky about ordering because honestly it's all pretty much the same. The formula is simple. We've lived in Clovis for a long time and have been to Shogun's many times and it used to be good. Atmosphere, service, food was all good, but not anymore. Now the restaurant is disgustingly dirty, wait staff is rude and neglectful, food is terrible and expensive. 10/10 would recommend any other restaurant in Clovis over this. Love the decor of the restaurant, customer service was very nice, people were pleasant and my order was served promptly however i found the garlic noodles extremely sweet tasted like someone put a cup of sugar in the wok , the sugar overpower the garlic didn't quite understand. All the food tastes the same. Same seasoning for the noodles, meat, and vegetables. On top of that, make sure you check your ticket before paying. The hibachi rooms are very dark and gloomy leading people to think they may be dirty. The chefs are friendly but I am not sure what posses them to put sugar on everything. The "special" concoction from the bowl covers all the food in sugar. I could not believe it the first time we went. The second time we asked for no sugar and it blew the chef's mind. Needless to say we some settled on light special flavoring. One the plus side you get a lot of food. It is getting toward the pricy side , but in par with other hibachi places. We had a pleasant experience for a surprise birthday dinner we had for my friend here. Everyone was so helpful with accommodating our large group and didn't mind that the head count changes a few times! We had hibachi and sushi that night! All of the food was surprising delicious. The reason I gave a 4 star was Bc I've been to many hibachi restaurant and always really enjoyed the fun stuff the cook would do to interact with the group- all though our cook was friendly he didn't go out of his way to make the experience wow and seemed annoyed with how much fun we were having at times. Odd! The staff did do a wonderful job bringing out the surprise cake at the perfect time after dinner. Overall it was a great night and we plan to go back. In addition to letting me know that she'd charge me for the first bad roll along with the replacement roll, she made sure to let me know that I "can't order a roll, not like it and not have to pay for it." Surprisingly after reading other reviews I expected bad customer service, but we actually had been good service. They keep refilling drinks without us asking and checked in with us willing we were waiting for our food. Now the only issues I had was the wait for the food and the food itself. We waited 30-45 minutes because of the kitchen, they either need to add more cooks or improve processes. When the food came out, the food seemed to have been rushed, which makes sense since they were backed up. But like other reviews what is with adding a whole bag of sugar to the meal. I thought I was eating dessert instead of dinner. My meal was way to sweet for me to even finish half. I personally will not be going back. They seat quickly, but it takes a while to place your drink and food order. The chef was probably the best part, he was nice and seemed to enjoy his job. The pricing is about normal for a hibachi meal and there is a substantial amount of food provided. No one at our cook top was able to complete their meal. Our plates, silverware and cups were clean, but building itself was disgusting. The hoods don't look like they get cleaned, but maybe once a week or more (grease fire potential?). Don't look at the ceilings or floors. It will gross you out. The vents for the A/C are nearly black with dusty grease build up. I would eat here again if they would do a thorough deep cleaning, but I know they won't. So I won't be back. read more
