I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone who is not Caucasian. I was with a party of three coworkers per a recommendation from a patient of ours to try this establishment, and we were all highly disappointed and treated very poorly by the manager/waiter. He was racial bias and very rude from the moment we entered the door and mentioned we had a reservation, we were sat in a corner in a back room, took about 15 minutes or so to be acknowledged after being sat down. When I got his attention to place the order, he replied in an angry and condensing manner. The evening got worse from there. He slammed the plates on the table, didn't come to check on our table throughout the dinner, and made fun of my coworker for having mispronounced the name of a dish. On the other hand Caucasian customers seemed to get special attention and overall treatment by this "manager." The food was mediocre and not worth the hype. Shokran has been on my list for a while, and they're finally back open for delivery. I got the chicken bastilla and merguez. Both dishes were amazing, but the standout was 100% the chicken bastilla. It's like a chicken dessert: it's sweet, savory, and pastry-like. So unique and wonderful. The merguez was great too, really juicy and well spiced. Wow, my first time trying this place (I ordered delivery on grubhub) and had low expectations. First the outstanding dishes - Moroccan Mint Tea was delicious - I was thinking how different can mint tea be - but this delicious tea was stuffed with tall branches of fresh mint and tasted wonderful! Chicken Bastila - what a wonderful surprise - such a delightful unique combination of tastes (chicken, eggs cooked in a special sauce, and almond paste with orange blossom water) and texture. Lamb Marrakech Tagine - again, wonderful fresh exotic ingredients (a rich Moroccan lamb stew with artichoke hearts and green peas). The other dishes I had (Harira, Roasted Vegetables, and Beet Salad) were good (very fresh) but would probably try out other items on the menu instead. Finally, I am a hard to please foodie. The food has to be really great (food mainly, service secondly) for me to rate a restaurant 5 stars - I do not rate restaurants based on how cute the owners are or my desire to support local businesses. I was actually planning to get tacos the other night, and tacos are my favorite food. But instead, I ate tacos for lunch and chose to come here for dinner. NO REGRETS! This restaurant was amazing. It's pretty easy to miss since it's a small place on the very large and commercial Irving Park Rd., but this is honestly a hidden gem. When you walk in it smells like incense they're burning and you get an immediate atmosphere of peace and warmth. You're then greeted by friendly faces and given the option to sit in one of their three seating areas. The decor is warm and colorful, with nice patterns on their booth couches, and cool curtains hanging around the restaurant. This was my first time having Moroccan food, but they claimed to have the best in Chicago. So I can't be a fair judge on if it's the best or not, but it was certainly amazing. The server was extremely kind and is a big proponent of getting an authentic Moroccan experience. My friend originally asked for a chicken kebab and he asked if she'd be open to changing her mind. He mentioned you can get a kebab anywhere, but to get a true Moroccan experience a couscous or tagine was the way to go. It worked! My friend got the chicken couscous. I got the sweet chicken couscous. Both of us were in love!!! They also gave us pita bread with a red dipping sauce (reminded me of romesco) and olives for free. If you're in the area and are open to trying new things, please come here! And if you're not in the area... then maybe you should come!! This place will make you happy. The top of my husband's travel list is Morocco, but he's a picky eater so we decided try out some Moroccan cuisine before planning a trip. Everything we ordered was delicious, but I have to give extra props to the chicken bastila. For a dish with ingredients that do not sound like they should go together, it works beautifully. It was definitely my favorite dish. We got three appetizers and the lamb couscous to split and they had to roll us out of there. Very reasonable prices as well. The service was OUTSTANDING. Our waiter was so helpful and knowledgeable about the food and history of Morocco. People often travel on Irving Park Rd. in the city because it passes through many nice north-side neighborhoods in an east-west direction. Little do they pay attention to a particular restaurant that is hidden in between an interstate entrance, a metra station, and a CTA station. I meant this place was "Shokran," a cash-only establishment that serves Moroccan food. Hubby and I came in on a weekday evening, at approximately 5:30pm. I believe we were the first dine-in patrons of the day and got to sit at the indoor sunroom near the kitchen. The seating was consisted of chairs, devon sofas, and decorative pillows. I almost wanted to put my feet up on the sofa but thought such behavior was quite rude. Based on a few Yelp reviews I read, we knew the Moroccan mint tea ($2.50/person, as of 03/13/2027) was a must-order. To be honest, the experience wouldn't be successfully completed without this honey-rich and ultra-soothing drink. The smell of mint leaf, to me, was one of the greatest pleasures in life! After the complementary pitas, with seasoned black olives and homemade hot sauce on the side, the "briwats" came ($6). Think about this appetizer as a Moroccan, with a French influence, crepe. However, the ingredients inside the crispy crepe were unique: shrimps and vermicelli. We drizzled some lemon juice from the lemon wedges as part of the plate garnish. I personally liked how this dish tasted and would consider re-ordering it again. Then the entrees, "lamb fez" and "lamb Marrakech" were delivered to our table ($18 respectively). The flavor profile on the lamb fez were interesting: cinnamon, almond, and honey. Pieces of prunes and boiled eggs were soaked in the sauce. The presentation of this lamb stew was magnificent; the entire lamb leg was in the center stage. I normally don't like sweet components in an entree, yet my tastebuds had no single denial! We continued enjoying the mint tea until the last drip. I could see "Shokran" as a popular dinner destination on the weekends. Fortunately, there was no extraordinary long-wait throughout our meal, and service was rendered in a very courteous manner. Finding parking on Irving Park can be difficult, but there are some free street parking along Pulaski. Some restrictions may apply. read more

True, authentic Moroccan food and mint tea! My friends and I just happened to have been in Morocco exactly 6 years to the day when we decided we wanted to relive our time abroad and visit Shokran. We were served batbout (Moroccan pita bread) with a spicy tomato sauce and olives, and ordered Moroccan mint tea for the table. They make the tea fresh and specified to your tastes (sweeter or not), and it is *delicious*! We split the chicken bastilla (sweet/savory chicken filling wrapped in phyllo dough and sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon), and it tasted exactly as we remembered! We each got chicken or lamb couscous which were large portions served with tender chicken or lamb, tagine-cooked veggies, and couscous with a side of homemade broth to flavor everything together. The ambiance and authenticity of the food brought us right back to eating in the medina in Morocco. This place is a must try! read more

This review is based just on mint tea and the customer service! We had been traveling and trying food all day, and my brother suggested to end our outing with mint tea. I yelped it and this place happened to be nearby. I walked in and it smelled so good! I wish I had space to eat but I was already stuffed! I ordered three mint teas to go. I know this is not a Cafe, it's a nice sit down restaurant. The waiter did mention it was busy but he made an exception which I really appreciated! The tea is filled with mint and made fresh! We came on a Sunday so there was free street parking. The restaurant is cash only but they have an atm inside the restaurant and Walgreens is on the corner where you can get cash. Excellent place even on a record-cold night. Cool location close to the blue line Irving Park stop by the bridge where there's lots of lots of pigeons. I had the bastila. It's a sweet pastry filled with chicken and almonds. It's served Moroccan weddings. I was not so sure about having a sweet pastry with chicken. But it was nice. You're also served some warm pita and olives and spices. I also had a sweet lamb Tagine. It had a huge lamb shank and couscous, almonds and raisins. Really delicious. The portions are huge. Setting was nice. Felt like a tent with the cushions. I had lots of leftovers and no room for tea and dessert. Maybe another time? It's a pleasure to review a restaurant deserving 5 stars. Shokran fits the bill. My wife and I recently spent 2 weeks in Morocco, and greatly enjoyed its cuisine. We were curious to try a local Moroccan restaurant. I had the Chicken Bastilla appetizer, chicken inside filo pastry. Very nicely seasoned. Also had the spicy and tasty Merguez (beef and lamb sausage). My wife enjoyed traditional harira soup (served during Ramadan). Kefta kebab was her main. Both were very well seasoned and just right. Our waiter was helpful explaining seasonings. We also enjoyed discussing Moroccan cuisine, culture and geography with him. The restaurant has several eating areas, all decorated with Moroccan sights and crafts. Altogether a very pleasant evening and highly recommended. read more

Moroccan food is a lovely find as these restaurants are not very common. I try to find them all the time and don't have much luck. When you do find one it's nice to see that it's recommended on the Michelin guide. The food is spot on for what I like from Moroccan food, a lot of flavor, unique ingredients, and blend of spices that bring the dish to life. They really make dishes different and most will agree that this is something you haven't had before. I love the chicken tagine fes, I highly recommend that one as it is amazing! While the dishes were pretty good, it wasn't flavorful and each one felt like it was missing a lil' somethin'. It is BYOB ($5 corkage fee) so make sure to pick up a bottle -- there's a Walgreens next door (albeit, with a limited selection). A very solid 4! Came here for dinner with my family. The restaurant is much bigger than it looks from the outside. The lighting is very dim inside which makes it kind of hard to see. The food and service overall was great. We also had a baby and it was too loud or anything. We came on a Tuesday around 8:00pm and they were an out of chicken, to our surprise the restaurant was pretty full. Food: - Chicken Bastilla - Skip, pretty dry - Hummus - simple but good and served with warm pita - Shokran salad - just okay - Lamb Fez - this was my favorite! The lamb is so tender and falls off the bone. The prunes and honey go really well with the lamb. - Lamb Kefta - I would pass on this, dry, and nothing that stood out about it -Merguez - homemade sausage, yum This place is also byob.
