Okay, okay...I teetered on this one and waited quite some time to write a review since Chinese fare is something I am pretty picky about. The skinny: Vegetable fried rice is pretty hard to screw up so it's an excellent thing that they do not. It is a bit sticky/clumpy as it should be and the vegetables are LARGE. This is my 2nd favorite dish but as you know, this is a very safe dish for most Chinese places. Crab Rangoon is just so-so. The filling isn't bad (good flavor, chunks of crab) but the outside seems to be always overcooked and there is simply too much of it. The wrapper to filling ratio needs to be adjusted. More filling, less wrapper. Pepper steak is my favorite menu item. The meat is not questionable whatsoever and again, the vegetables are huge. The sauce (or gravy...whatever you call it) has to be some of the best I have tried when it comes to pepper steak. This item is my main suggestion, for sure. Orange chicken is wayyyyy too sweet. It's similar to eating an orange push-up pop. Not what I want when it comes to my chicken. Leave that kind of orange to the push-up's and make the damn chicken taste like chicken please! Sesame chicken is mediocre. The chicken pieces are too big so the sauce isn't evenly distributed over the whole dish. The sauce has a nice mild flavor but with the chicken being over sized and slightly over-breaded, the sauce just isn't enough to save the dish. Vegetable LoMein has no flavor. None, zip, zilch! It is wasted money to me. Egg rolls are fan friggin' tastic. Well, with the exception of 1 time. Typically, they are some of the best made egg rolls around. Not too greasy with a nice crispy wrapper. Perfect. I give them a pass on the 1 time mine was burnt to a crisp; only because I have ordered here so often that 1 time isn't a deal breaker to me. I have ordered other menu items from here but the aforementioned are my highs and lows. As far as customer service and what not, I added some more skinny for you... The portions are huge. However, they tend to over-stuff the packages with your food when getting takeout. This may sound awesome but it actually is not very awesome at all. EVERY time I get food from here, something spills in the bag and on 2 occasions, I was left with sauce in my car. Booooo! Not cool! The staff are pleasant folk and do make sure you have enough soy sauce, silverware, fortune cookies, etc. so that attention to detail is appreciated. The shop is located in a strip mall so if you are expecting fancy then you may have some delusions in life you should deal with. The inside is clean however and the lighting is somewhat dim which I tend to like when pigging out in public. Personally, I would give the egg rolls and pepper steak 5 stars along with the customer service but had to be fair here. My 3 stars will stand for now. I say, "Give them a try." It's just down the street for us, and convenience is usually a big factor for me. But their food is solid and they are consistently good. I grew up going here. I probably ate here a few times a month for the first 18 yrs of my life. Although they have changed owners a time or two it is still the same place, same food. I love the consistency. You know that your meal is going to be the same, every time. The prices are extremely reasonable for the amount of food you get. Very standard menu options, but the quality is great compared to most Chinese restaurants. Service is usually pretty good, and the food comes out pretty fast, even when they are busy. Expect a little wait on the weekends. Easily the best Chinese restaurant downriver, and in fact, probably the best in the Metro Detroit area. I live north of Detroit now, and I would still drive there for dinner. For around $8 you can get a meal with either fried or white rice, soup and an egg roll. The only reason for four stars is I am reviewing the food and not the restaurant. The restaurant always seems dirty and the bathroom is gross. Located in what has to be one of the oldest strip malls in the area. I have been enjoying the food at Shong Hey for nearly 40 years. Fantastic Egg Rolls. Huge portions. The Special Won Ton Soup is a meal in itself. Great prices. The remarks on cleanliness are most likely coming from folks that have never worked in the restaurant industry. Old and dirty are not always the same thing. Who cares if the carpet is old and worn? I would not eat off the carpet at the Whitney either. The plates, silverware, and table tops are always clean. Newly moved into the area, I decided to try Shong Hey based on the awesome reviews. And then I ate there... Super aloof staff that neither made me feel welcome or comfortable. My crab ran goons had hardly any filling. I truly don't care if they are filled with pure cream cheese, fake Krab, or real chunks of crab meat but these bad boys had hardly anything in their crispy wonton shell. They also came without their own dipping sauce which was another huge disappointment. The egg roll seemed a bit small, comparatively but it was good and I like the type of plum sauce this restaurant uses. It's kind of hard to find so that was a small win. The fried rice with my meal was bland and about as simple as fried rice can be. My sweet and sour chicken "safe" meal just didn't seem all that great. Again, it was more on the bland side. You can order the same item time and time again and each time it will come a different way. At one point my fried rice that came in the combo was having some weird honey ham in it.... It was gross. The sesame chicken has often been burnt, the spice has changed to where the flavor is completely different and often too hot to eat and today when I received it my meal tasted more like sweet and sour chicken with sesame seeds than sesame chicken. I'm not sure if they have new cooks or if they're experimenting, but, they need to get back to their roots because this past year has been very inconsistent and sometimes awful...
