After our first stay here, we loved it so much that we decided to rent all nine Airstreams for a family reunion. Troy and Michelle have been amazing hosts, showing us around each trailer, answering questions phone call after phone call, even going as far as helping me find a local photographer for the occasion. The Airstreams are beautifully decorated, well-equipped with amenities, super clean and comfortable. They've put a lot of thought and creativity into everything; the trailers, the drive-in theater, even the snack bar... And, every time we stay there, they seem to be making some new improvement, like adding more Airstreams, remodeling, or expanding. If you want a fun place to stay in the Escalante, Bryce Canyon, Petrified Forest area... I can't recommend Shooting Star enough. These people care about their guests and, in my experience with them, it shows. read more

As my 10 year old stated, "we were baited!" Booked our reservations nearly a month in advance, maneuvered a few things to ensure we got here on a Tuesday to experience the drive in movie. Upon arrival we found everything under construction. No one ever notified us of this. The construction has been happening for a while, it almost looks like they started a project and ran out of funds to finish it. No drive in theater, no wi-fi, bathrooms & garbage are an eternity away from the campsites. Nowhere near 360 views of the grand staircase! I would have gladly spent our stay in a campground at Bryce Canyon or even up the road 1 mile. All pictures are deceiving! No airstreams or decks due to construction. We were the only people in the entire resort (that's a stretch to call it a resort). Having it to ourself may have been the only positive of this place. read more

I wanted to love this place but during my recent visit I was only met with disappointment. I spent one night on July 14th 2018. Let me start with the good: it is beautiful here. Now the bad: the main reason for my visit was to enjoy renting a classic car and watching a drive in movie however, since the person running the resort showed rain in the forecast, he was unwilling to play a movie. He showed me his weather app on his phone to validate that it was going to rain. When the sun went down, there was absolutely no rain and it stayed dry all the way until we left the next day. I asked the resort attendant to please open up the drive in if it was possible and he said he would if he could. He never bothered. It seemed as though it was to much work to bother with us and the movie. I also asked for a trailer for one night when I made my reservation. They have a two night minimum policy but was assured that if one was available (when making my reservation) that I could rent it for one night. When I asked on arrival for the trailer rental, the same man told me that the strict policy on two nights can not be broken. Really? There was hardly any one here....you don't want my money???? Or you don't want to bother with the work that goes with that too? On my receipt it says "We look forward to your visit and will do EVERYTHING possible to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable". My guess is that the actual owner does not know or care about how their property is being managed.....if I am wrong, please respond......... read more

My wife, 14 year-old son and I just got back from spending 4 days along Route 12. We went from LV to Zion to Bryce to Escalante then turned around and went through Cedar Brakes on the way back. There is no doubt we went the right direction because after experiencing the vastness of Escalante National Monument, anything else would have seemed less dramatic. I can't describe it other than to say that the terrain is an entirely different scale. When you pull into the drive-in, you first meet Troy at the office and he leads you over to your Airstream RV in his yellow '57 golf cart with fringe tooling around the canopy. I mention this only to say that everything on the property has been treated to the same impeccable attention to detail. We approached the Airstream and noticed a cooking area with a new Weber gas grill and two deck chairs, and a picnic table next to the deck. Just beyond a hammock in a small garden in the shade. When you enter the trailer, which looks like it is brand new, you see a fully stocked kitchen. All cooking will be on the grill with side burner and microwave. The kitchen table is a booth for 4. There is a sitting sofa convertible to a double, TV with cable, radio and speakers. The bedroom is mostly all bed, but it and the bedding was plush and comfortable. The bath is a spotless RV bathroom. It was a perfect setup, especially if you like the concept of camping and being in nature, without any of the inconvenience. The next day we decided to spend an extra day. Troy recommended the Peek-a-boo and Spooky hikes. You drive past the Devil's Garden toward Hole in the Rock Monument. Bring your water shoes for these hikes. This was the highlight of our trip, in my opinion. If you decide to dine out, Troy and Michelle have some great options for you. We went to the North Creek Grill for an outdoor dining experience that was a great birthday celebration. Thank you Troy and Michelle. Hope to see you again! read more

This place is so awesome! As far as RV parks go, it has loads of green space, with sites in groups of 4-6. We were pulling an Airstream, and parked amongst several permanent Airstreams. If you're into the aesthetics of Airstreams, seeing 6 lined up together is pretty satisfying! I also liked how each site had its own trash, recycling, and fire wood, right next to the lighted hook up. The owners were great, and recommended a hike that was way off the radar (Spooky and Peekaboo Canyons). They also steered us in the right direction for adventures down the road--very generous with information. The real treat was the drive in movie theatre. They show a movie on the weekend (or maybe anytime there's critical mass?), and rent out old cars to watch from. People bring out lawn chairs, sleeping bags, fire pits--super fun! read more

The idea of staying in an old fashioned airstream was what drew us here. They are clean and the staff friendly. The problem with our visit is it was so hot and the air really didn't work well. The door didn't close right and the hot air just comes right in. The airstream really needed some tlc. Doors would come off and the bathroom door didn't slide shut. You can't use the microwave and the air at the same time. They have only a microwave, no stove and the pots provided are all aluminum. I couldn't cook very well except for the grill. On the up side I feel they really did try, but it just needs some work to be worth another visit. read more

Shooting Star is an amazing place in Escalante. It's glamping at it's best. The Airstreams are all decked out in movie paraphernalia and they show a movie every night at their drive-in. Shooting star is a do not miss when in the area. I came into town to hike in the slot canyons with my girlfriend for her birthday. The owners found out and had a lemon tart with a candle waiting for her. The Airstreams have a private deck with a grill perfect for watching the sunset. read more

There is so much to say so I apologize for being verbose. We had a great time at the Shooting Star. We had two RVs. The Kid's Hideout and The Duke. The Kid's Hideout seemed newer than the Duke. It sleeps only two. There are no pull out/convertible beds. It was clean. The air conditioner worked well. The grill seemed like it was new. I recommend the Kid's Hideout for a couple. The Duke (I think) is the biggest Airstream on the lot. We chose it for that (two kids with us) and it has two doors. One into the kitchen and one into the bedroom. This allowed us to sneak in after the kids went to bed. No waking. Nice. The Duke is also situated at the end of one of the rows of Airstreams. Not great views but trees for shade. We moved our picnic table all day to follow the shade. It was hot. (I'll get to that). The only real drawback of the Duke was the AC. It did not work well. And, as I said, it was hot... Both RVs were stocked with everything we needed to prepare/enjoy our food there. All cooking needs to be done on the grill. Both grills also had a burner for pots. Plenty of propane. Michelle, the host (her husband was out of town) and her in-laws were terrifically welcoming and helpful. Friendly and professional. We had a few problems with the Duke toward the beginning of our stay but Michelle was on it. She worked hard to fix the problem. And she did. (Thank you, Michelle.) We took in cartoons and part of a movie (young son, too late) while there. Sat in a the blue Ford ragtop. Really fun. My son loved it. He got to "drive." Honestly, I'd probably give the Shooting Star five stars if Utah wasn't so damn hot in July. Why blame the Shooting Star for the heat, you ask? I don't. But AC that worked would have really helped. Other than the extreme heat, I'd recommend Shooting Star to anyone who wants to experience Airstream life in the expansive, wild land of Utah -- and take in a drive-in on a cool (it really cools down at night) Utah summer evening. But I suggest waiting until the extreme heat of the summer has passed. Then it would be top notch. A few other things you might want to know. Escalante is small. The towns around Escalante are smaller. If you need any sort of specialty items, you might want to pack them in. We had a baby with us and we could not find the right size diapers or formula in town. (We packed everything in, so we were okay). Michelle was ready to help, by the way. She was on Amazon, doing a formula search for us. We did not ask. She took it upon herself. She really was a great host. Suggestion: It would be great if there was a schematic of the property on the website so guests can understand the layout of the Airstreams and the whole property. We got lucky. Our two Airstreams were in the same row so it was easy to share all our stuff between us and my in-laws. Here are some of the things we did and really liked: Bryce Canyon (about an hour away), kayaking in the reservoir (5 minutes away), Lower Calf Falls hike (good hike for people in reasonable shape. That is, mostly flat. 3 miles each way. Bring plenty of water. Half gallon per person for four hours. Wear hiking boots and a hat! The falls are beautiful. The water is frigid. Perfect when it's so damn hot!), Petrified Forest hike (5 minutes away. Need to be in good shape. Uphill. Petrified wood is cool.), Devils' Garden (about an hour's drive along a gravel road. Really cool hoodoos that you can climb all over. My son loved it. Bring lots of water, vibram soles and a hat!). Also, the welcome center is a great place to orient yourself and ask questions about the unforgiving land before you go hiking and buy a cool beaver hat. read more

We just got home from our stay at Shooting Star RV Resort. We had such a great time! There are Air Stream Trailers you can rent and each one has a movie theme. Ours was "The Kid" for "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". It was charming! It was clean and comfortable (the bed was so comfortable!) and had everything we needed....including a tv...all the comforts of home! Each trailer has its own deck, deck chairs, propane bbq, and picnic table. During the "good weather" months they have an outdoor "drive-in" theater where they show great old time movies. I say "drive-in" in quotes because they provide old-time vehicles you can rent to sit in to watch your movie...or you can just bring a chair or blanket to sit on. They also have a snack shack to get your popcorn and snacks for the movie....great idea right! There are SO many things to do around the area. And they are happy to point you in the right direction. We will definitely be back! read more

We were there for 4 nights in April. Loved it, we have our own rv so we just rented a space. We were right behind the snack bar and drive in. Troy and Michelle were great, very friendly and helpful. We did the Petrified Forest hike, we're not hikers so it was a workout for us, but we enjoyed it and we were proud we made it up and down, without falling, lol. We have a side by side so we did a lot of riding. The beauty of Utah never ceases to amaze us. We were there for movie night and snagged the Rambler, for Any Which Way but Loose. Was so fun and nostalgic, and Michelle whips up some delicious popcorn! We went on a trail Troy recommended a 60 mile loop, but since we are directionally challenged we managed to turn it into a 100 mile loop, a little tired when we got back, but still enjoyed all of it. We stayed here for a night while visiting the Escalante Petrified Forest and Grand Staircase. It was the best place to stay! My husband is very anti RV parks. He likes to stay as far away from civilization as possible. I love a bathroom and shower! This was the perfect in between. The owners moved us to a great spot where we could hang our 4 hammocks, without being crowded next to RV's or other campers. It had lots of shade, and easy access to the facilities. The drive in movie on Saturday night was so much fun! We were able to reserve a convertible and watch Cannonball Run under the stars. This is something my kids have never experienced before as all the drive ins in our area have been long gone. I can't say enough good about the resort and the owners. We want to plan another trip just to stay - and next time get one of the Airstreams! read more

Very disappointed in the lack of ability to work with unforeseen emergent circumstances. We booked 2 RV sites in March for June 14-17. One of the sites booked we will be able to use, the other a total loss. Zero give on the policy, which I understand policies, however customer service completely lacking, with no understanding of emergency and very limited in what they were willing to do. Rebook this year was the only option or lose entire amount, 50% deposit taken in March and remaining 50% taken 8 days prior to arrival. At this point limited availability to book anything this year. We are cutting our losses and unfortunately will never book this location again. Be sure you know when you are going, and don't expect any deviance from policy, compassion or understanding for life or death unforeseen emergencies. A little goes along ways.. we would have been happy with a minimal $20 refund on our $118 payment, and would have likely tried to rebook in 2019.. read more

This place is AWESOME!! First heard about it on the Today show last summer and we had to check it out. The trailers are super nice on the inside and they have some neat items such as old movie scripts. The drive-in itself is great with very nice cars that are in great condition. There is also a concession trailer that is filled with candy just like you would find at the drive-in such as Necco wafers, candy buttons, and bottled sodas. The owner is extremely friendly and personable and is willing to go out of his way to make your experience the best possible. We are ready to go back!! read more

I can't remember how I learned about Shooting Star but I wish more people knew about it. We really want this place to succeed. We reserved Mrs. Rutledge's Room. A lovely Airstream with the best view on the property. I am disabled, walking with difficulty on canes. (And FYI, Utah seems to be made up entirely of rocky, uneven surfaces!) As I approached the 2 stairs leading up to the deck, I realized that I would have a really hard time negotiating the first stair with the slight incline and rocky surface. Right away, Troy said he would bring his tractor over in the morning after we went out for the day and make some adjustments. When we returned the next afternoon, he had not only smoothed out the approach to the deck, he added a smooth firm layer of sand and even added a small platform so that first step to the deck was much easier for me. He did all that even though we were only going to be there 2 nights! Why stay in a boring hotel room, when you can have your own self contained unit for the same price! The bed was big, warm, and comfy...with the softest sheets I've ever slept on. Coffee, tea, even cream and sugar was supplied. (However, if you like your coffee or tea sweet and creamy bring extra. We didn't have quite enough.) Try something old that's new again...a restored, vintage Airstream sitting near, if not on, the Escalante Grand Staircase. read more
