It really stinks when the closest grocery store to you is the worst. This is where we go based on proximity but tonight was the tip of the iceberg and I will not be back. I have lived here for 5 years and ShopRite has always been more expensive than its competitors, but it's so convenient I usually turn a blind eye to the prices. Their selection is fine, sometimes deals are great, sometimes. Over the last few months they have been making changes to their layout, which is great when it makes the shopper experience better. Tonight I walked in to a store that was basically flipped and scrambled in a pretty asinine way. That being said, as a creature of habit, I can totally understand my own frustrations probably heightened my irritation, that is until check out. There are roughly 9 self check out lanes and maybe 7 or 8 manned stations, may be more or less, I'm not sure because I don't think I've seen more than 3 open at any given time. Mind you, it is almost 9 pm on a Saturday so the store is dead. There is 1 checkout lane open and as I go to check out, no one is at the register. Okay... not ideal, but self checkout it is. ShopRite's new policy is 20 items or less for self checkout, totally understandable. Except your only manned station has no one there. There, again, are 9 self checkouts... and no one in the store. I had about 27 items. Definitely more than the limit, but nowhere else for me to checkout. I am ringing up my items, nothing big or crazy and am about 6 or 7 items in when the attendant working self checkout tells me that this aisle is reserved for 20 items or less. I explain that I understand but there is no one at regular checkout, who is now back and has 2 people in her line, and there is no one behind me. She then says, I know, but 20 items or less... let me void that for you and you can head over to regular checkout. She proceeds to step to my register, void my transaction and send me on my way. I had to pack up the things I had already scanned back into my cart to re check out at another station. Maybe I sound ridiculous but I am flabbergasted at the ridiculousness of the situation at this overpriced low end grocery store. read more

As far as customer service is concerned, I've never had a poor experience at this Shoprite. I've also never had issues with the food I purchase here. Everything I get is fresh. Their cakes are awesome. Their prices are pretty average - not overwhelmingly high, but there are other grocery stores in the area with slightly better prices. I usually only come here to get the basics when I run out - milk, bread, eggs, etc. - since it's the closest grocery store to my house. However, it's rare for me to do a full-blown grocery trip here. read more

I am giving this SR a generous 2 stars and not 1 bc there are some workers there that are helpful. Those are just a handful and are the ones that have been working there for a while. This is also the closest supermarket and they do have great sales including really good once a month meat sales (usually 3rd Sat), which are also both +'s!! Otherwise, there's consistently new workers that don't seem to know or care about what they are doing. The cashiers seem to think they have all the time in the world, but this isn't just your world!! There have been instances where I think the color of my skin determined how I was treated and that just shouldn't be. It also wasn't one of the newer workers that did this and just left me with a sour taste. I feel everyone is so friendly in HC, so I just think this is one of the few exceptions. Go a few miles to Wegman if you don't need something right away. I normally don't like to give anything lower than a 3 star rating, but every once in a while I want to give them 0 star. This 2 star rating is being very generous imo! read more

I wish I could post pictures of the rotisserie chicken I purchased there. I tasted a piece about half the size of my pinky finger, spit it out and still got severe stomach cramps. When I took it back the next day, the customer service person didn't want to hear a word I had to say about it should never have been cooked or sold. She didn't even make eye contact and just did the transaction to return my money in cash. She could care less that I had a mild touch of food poisoning from their chicken. It's a grocery store. It's clean and bright and has all of the usual food stuff that you'd expect at a store! I think the prices are average for the area. Plenty of parking and feels safe enough. read more

If this wasn't the closest and most convenient grocery store to me I would be going somewhere else. I don't know how many times I have bought food (cheese, milk) and it has been expired or expiring within a day, when I checked the expiration date. I've also bought several products that have been cut open, most likely by the guys stocking shelves and the product is no good. Also, on 2 separate trips to the deli, I have gotten sliced pepperoni and they have forgotten to take off the plastic wrap before they sliced it. You can complain to the customer service but they are just a bunch of young kids and don't really care. Once I got a refund and the other time they sent me to the back to get more pepperoni as a swap. Very inconsistent in how they handle problems. I've had lots of problems with things ringing up at correct prices and getting my coupons to ring up correct too. read more

I hate this shoprite, one other Yelper on here said she has bought expired dairy...well the same thing has happened to me 3 times! Cheese, Sour cream and just recently butter. The butter I bought was 3 months old!!! Yuck!!! I called and complained because it's really annoying having to go back up there and exchange it out! I shouldn't have to do that as a paying customer. Terrible service. Employees stand around at the customer service desk talking amongst each other and to their visiting friends and relatives. Any time I've asked where a certain item is, I've been pointed to where it might be and it's never there. Our family has food allergies and recently this store has just started stocking wheat - free flour on shelves above wheat flour. People with severe allergies can't climb or reach above risking contact with wheat to get to wheat - free products. It's ludicrous. I have received great customer service from two cashiers, one named Kimberly and another named Emily. In ten years, (there's been a name change) service has been consistently crappy. read more

I don't normally review grocery stores, but I saw the negative reviews when looking up the hours for this grocery store and felt obligated to post. Anyway, I always buy dairy and never had anything expired... Most of the cheeses I buy expire months after purchase date. Staff is pretty helpful.. The only complaint is sometimes there are long lines, but not all the time. The weird thing is that I see lines sometimes when there's another lane open without any line at all... This is my go-to grocery store and haven't for a second thought about going somewhere further. read more

I had terrible experience with the employees! I left my phone there and called back 15 minutes later (the store had just closed) to see if they had found it. The guy on the phone told me to come back so I could look but when I did, 2 store employees just stood there looking at me from a distance. I tried signaling them to come talk to me at the door but they didn't and one of the guys signaled for me to wait a minute. Still waiting outside in 30 degree temperature 20 minutes later, the lights started going off and no one ever came back!!! It is the Employees that keep me coming back. I have been shopping at this store for about 10 years. I so think Corporate treats this store as their stepchild. All the other Shoprite stores in our area are really nice and have anything you are looking for. This poor store has new things and when you go to get the item next time it is no longer there. The Salad bar could use some updating too. They have a cucumber salad that my family loves but I always have to go to the others stores to get same. . Not very pleased with Corporate and their management. Like I said before I just go there because of the employees. But, soon that might not even be enough to keep coming back to this location. read more

Most area's have good customer service, but the deli counter is beyond bad. Four workers just running their mouths talking about nothing and not waiting on customers. They move so slow, thought I was watching the Walking Dead in real life! Left before they could continue to ignore me and took my business elsewhere. Asked for the store manager at check out and was told he wasn't there, cashier kinda laughed and said they get lots of complaints about that department. read more

I cannot believe the "great" comments on this Shop Rite store in Riverside on Google Reviews. The store is not the cleanest. I can't count on them having my typical usual products that are already top sellers week to week. The produce isn't fresh, it's rotting most of the time! The employees pretend to help you by shrugging their shoulders. Parking is atrocious as well. It's like the red headed step child of the Shop Rite chain. I pass this store every day on my way home from work and I go out of my way to NOT shop there. read more

If I could rate zero stars, I would. This place has the rudest associates working there, especially today. My first stop is at customer service to cash in my voucher from coin star since I had a bunch of change I need to get rid of. I begin to ask the woman if they are able to break a 100 dollar bill. I notice she's not even looking at me or paying me any attention so I ask again, while not even looking at me and answering my question she tells me "no". I'm like "ok, well when I go to purchase my items, will they be able to do so at the registers?" She says "no". I'm like "so you're saying I can't make a purchase with a 100 dollar bill?". She says "yes but you have to buy stuff." Um duh , that's what I just said and why tf would I be there in the first place? Strike one. So next, I'm cruising along just browsing a man says "ma'am, can I help you find anything?" My response "oh, I'm ok, thank you, just looking, not sure yet what I wanna get" so he then says "well if you don't even know I can't help you then." with an attitude and I'm like wtf? At what point did I say I needed your help anyway? Strike two. Lastly, I'm in line getting ready to pay for my merchandise when I realize my total is like $24.39 so I say "one sec, I think I have the change." So while I'm digging through my jacket looking for my change (I guess to her, I was taking too long), she proceeds to just take my $100 bill and give me my change or whatever. I then say "Thank you, have a good day" and she responds with nothing. Strike three. Wow. I don't ever complain but I've worked customer service before and I know the rules. You're supposed to pretend like you enjoy your job even if you hate it. It's not my fault you chose to be a cashier at ShopRite for a career. Anyways, that's all I've got to say. We've lived here for a year & go here because it's really the only convenient grocery store... A lot of the time we drive 15 mins to go to a diff store just because the service here is so terrible. A LOT of the staff are young kids that care more about talking and standing around than bagging, being a cashier or working the deli. Tonight, it took 18 minutes to bag 5 bags worth of groceries. Everyone in line was rolling their eyes, pissed off and the cashier was just talking to other coworkers while bagging extremely slowly. Also, the deli people were not calling numbers even though everyone was pulling one to be served in order & te deli people made it more confusing for themselves and everyone else this way. Also, they renovated much of the store lately, yet the produce is still bad within 1-3 days MOST of the time. We literally counted 8x in a row where much of our produce went bad within a cpl days of purchase so we stopped buying produce from here now. It would be nice if you'd actually see a manager on the floor making sure his/her employees were doing their jobs because there's a lot of slacking going on here & the freshness of produce needs to be checked up on as well. read more

Should be zero stars. Terrible produce section, often selling wrinkled and/or otherwise rotten food, saw the same bag of rotten grapes and a bag of red potatoes on the shelf for 2 weeks! Deli counter is simply a dirty mess with the poorest service I've ever experienced. Dairy products are regularly being sold while out of date. Vendor-stocked grocery products run out regularly and are not re-stocked timely. This is especially true of #1 sellers too! Manager, Brad, is politely responsive to complaints but takes no real action. Store comes across as the one that Shop Rite doesn't really care about. Do yourself a favor, go to the Aberdeen store instead, it's a much better experience. Shop Rite should be ashamed of how this store serves the Riverside/Belcamp community. read more

Shoprite in Riverside has the best butchers. I love their store ground beef. I make sure not to buy the beef in the Shoprite wrapping. Check with the butcher first so that you get the store ground beef. There has never been any gristle in the beef they grind there. Excellent! read more
