One amazing thing to do whenever you're in Long Beach, walk this bike path. It's a nice stretch along from the marina to the Belmont pier. There's two path, one for cyclists, skaters while one for walkers. It's pretty wide so plenty of room. The path takes you along the waterfront, while it's great for checking out the homes along the hill. Beach, it's a pretty big stretch of sand with plenty of space for everyone. There's also a bar restaurant towards the end of the path which is great for a meal and cocktails. Loads of lifeguards stations along the path. There's the main area where the tower is with the parking lot right next to beach. It's a smaller stretch of beach but grassy area and parking is available. I'm not sure how long the path is but it's worth the stroll along the beach. read more

Above the Shoreline Pedestrian Bikepath, we stopped at one of the overlook areas off Ocean Boulevard where one can enjoy sea breezes. Perfect for a little bit of people watching and bicycle watching and skateboard watching. For walkers' safety there is also a sidewalk. This spot off Junipero Avenue has a cannon next to the bench. To the right, steps lead down to the path and perhaps will lead to the elusive "Puff of Wind". read more

My friend Bret H. quit a very high-stress job earlier this year and has been enjoying the self-employed life from his home in Long Beach. Every time I see him, he's a little more golden, with a farmer's tan and a flip flop tan that just get crazier and crazier. Matt B. and I spent a lovely Sunday hanging out with him last month, and he suggested walking back from downtown Long Beach to his house in Belmont Shore. We'd been drinking all afternoon, so we didn't fact check him when he said it'd be about a half hour walk. That sun-dazed liar. On the bright side, it was a beautiful beachfront walk, most of it on the Shoreline Pedestrian Bikepath. This is exactly what it sounds like, a wide, clean path with lanes for pedestrians and bikes. There were plenty of both, though the path was never crowded. There was just so much of it, and so much beach and sky and sea to admire. We ended up walking for well over an hour, and other than my feet getting kind of wrecked, it was remarkably enjoyable. The views were gorgeous, and we got to work off some cocktails and work on our tans. read more

I really like this route. It's never overly crowded and it's got great views. There are going to be a lot of non locals during the weekend with their tandem bikes and scooters but that is only because the place is really cool. Family friendly. Good for a single run as well. read more

One of the safest and enjoyable cycling and pedestrian paths in So.Bay, along w RB strand - less congested than the strand, most of the day. Parking is challenging due to 2hr limit paid parking by credit card. Alt. parking may be to drive further south near Southern part of path for street parking above the beach area. read more

My first time running here was for a small non profit 5k.. Labor Day Splash for Fitness 4 All. The race began at 8am. The race had 5k & 10k since the path is 3 miles one way total I believe, so turn around halfway for a 5k. Turnaround at end for 10k. There are even distance markers on the running path! I would say I am pleasantly surprised and loved running here! Can't complain about the beach being right there.. (Good lighting and scenery for the obligatory selfie) It's so nice there's two separate paths for pedestrians and cyclists! I heard the renovated pedestrian path is even different material better for runners! Makes me feel better for my knees even if that's not true. There's plenty of restrooms and water along the way. There are sinks, but when I went it wasn't working (maybe for the drought). Doesn't matter though bc like all beaches there's no soap, so I recommend hand sani. There were people along path but not too crowded, even a few cute pups along the way (8am Sunday during holiday weekend). It might get more crowded as it gets later though, I know I wouldn't be up running that early if it weren't for the race. It did start warming up though, and running one way on path the sun was beaming down on me! For parking.. There was a lot that was slowly filling up towards 9am, it's 25 cents per 15 mins. But we parked on the street that marked no parking 9-5? So it was easy to find parking when we got there at 8am, and we left right at 9. So idk how parking situation is during day, but it was easy to find before 9! I had a great experience and would love running here regularly but it's a little far for just a workout. And I'm not sure how the parking situation would be during peak hours. But I definitely recommend for runners and walkers looking for a nice scenic stroll, especially with babies & fur babies. Think this place is ok. Secluded in a way & not many waves coming through - which works great for my daughter and myself. Parking price is reasonabe. A dollar for per hour is awesome. Theres a small shack where you can order snacks and rent bikes. During our visit on 9/8 we had a close encounter with a couple dolphins...they came so close but left graciously. The only con is the water being a bit dirty with green milduo. read more

When I moved to Long Beach I decided to start running. This Bike/Pedestrian path is 3 blocks from my house, perfect! By the time I walk/jog down there I'm warmed up! Then from the Belmont Pier I run towards downtown. In the evening you have the sun setting over PV and the LB skyline in front of view, with the ocean to your left. It's also a great place to rollerblade, or ride your bike. The path ends after it wraps around the harbor out towards the ocean. Double back and you get a view of Belmont Shores and the OC. I love to go down here to get away from the hustle and bustle and clear my head with a good run while I zone out on my iPod. read more

Excellent smooth path. This is a great place for walking, jogging, biking, and skating. And you'll find all of the above at any given moment. Be careful of the weekend tourist who don't seem to have a clue which direction they're headed and lack the ability to move in a straight line. I havent been to Long Beach since 2012. However i used to run on this bike path whenever I was visiting the area, approximately 2 or 3 times a year. I would usually run from the marina to the pier and back. I always loved running on the pathway and greeting the great cross section of people you would see taking a morning stroll Its a great place to run walk or bike. read more

It is not the cleanest beach but it is still nice to workout here - beats running on the treadmill. The pathway seems to be maintained pretty well - I haven't noticed any sidewalks that pop out, and the city seems to be fixing things up. They are in the process of replacing their old bathroom stalls with new ones (so in the meantime, they have port-o-potties - yuck), and landscaping is also improving with new plants being installed. I've seen a few police cars patrol here and there making their presence known. There's always a good amount of people riding their bikes, walking or running along the path but I have never encountered any bad vibes or overcrowding. Although most days you can spot transients laying out but they don't seem to bother. My complaints: is that a lot of debris and dead seaweed gets washed up on the shore (especially after it has rained). People need to pick up their trash. I wouldn't recommend going in the water (too many cargo ships and storm run-offs, the water is probably contaminated). Oh, and on a really, really hot day, the air quality can suck and you can really smell the diesel from nearby refineries. Those are the days when I decide to workout indoors. Despite all the negatives, nothing beats the ocean waves crashing at your feet as you run along the sand. read more

What a great resource for the residents of the city. I use this often. The city has made separate lanes for walkers and riders. The path is kept in good shape. The path runs from Shoreline Village to Horney Corner. There is only one street crossing (At Junipero). Restrooms along the way. Get out, get some sun and enjoy Long Beach, tons of pelicans flying around in the evenings. read more

Got in a beautiful 6 mile run on this pristine strand running South towards Belmont Shores. Much cleaner with less sand and debris than the Venice/Santa Monica strand and fewer cracks in the pavement. It also wasn't too crowded. Perfect place to be cruising on the skateboard. After my run I did a quick 2.5 mile walk to the North taking in the sights of the Queen Mary and the sunset. This route was not as smooth and clean but the views were pretty. Will definitely keep this in my exercise repertoire! read more

My barber told me about this trail, I must say it is kept swept and most of the times clean. We cross path as we ride along the trail or at the local Juice Pit Stop (Naturewell) or having a coffee at Coffee Bean. I can't wait till the summer time, I am sure there will be lots of eye candy. For some reason, the more times you go the more times you'll find yourself wanting more. Aside from the path and just off to the side, you of course have the sand which you can choose to walk/run if you feel the need to get that extra tread in your workout. As the sun sets and the night becomes darker, Long Beach lights appear. You can see the Queen Mary at a distance. It's beautiful! The view & vibe - It can't get any better than this. This path is cool other than the dimwits that don't know this is a designated bicycle path. Maybe the giant painted pictures of a stick man on a bike and the thing that says BIKE LANE don't clarify. Oh yeah and the lane that is made for pedestrian traffic, maybe they think that is for bicycles. Who knows! I guess these are the same people that drive and suddenly realize they need to make a right turn NOW so they stop in traffic until they can turn right from the middle lane. I suppose I'm expecting too much?? So they also rent these pedal powered car cart things. These are the worst of the worst out here! The people are absolutely clueless and stop, swerve, drive on the wrong side, etc. Then you almost eat it and they just stare at you with the stupidest blank stare. Um yeah, you almost made me fall and possibly break a bone, my bike, or get injured for real. Whatever. Other than these dangers, this path is freaking awesome! The only danger with the path itself would be the sand that sometimes gets on the pavement where there are turns. This could be bad news, especially on the one part where it runs parallel to the pier and makes a 90 degree turn. BE VERY CAREFUL HERE!!!! Most of the people who are on bikes, running, or on rollerblades are pretty considerate to the flow of traffic. They stay to the right if they are in the way, and pass safely on the left when they want to get by. Luckily you can see the real jerkface numbnuts coming from a ways back, so you can figure out what to do. Just slow down as you get near, as you honestly have no idea what abrupt things they are going to do. Also beware of the pedestrians crossing, as they oftentimes don't realize that this is a thoroughfare, and may not pay close attention. Note that around halfway through there is a designated dog beach area, so be careful for dogs crossing!!! Don't want to run over someone's beloved pooch! D= More often than not the wind will be blowing from west to east, so plan this accordingly, whichever direction you are going to be riding. The path starts out at the marina near Yard House, and goes east until it ends near Belmont Shore. Figure to cover around 5 miles end to end. On the West side you hop across the Pike area and can catch the LA River bicycle path and head north from there, which will take you all the way towards LA and beyond. The path is clearly marked and is well kept. There are places both on the path and nearby to rent bicycles if you don't want to lug one down here, or if you didn't happen to bring one. The scenery is nice, and gives you a view of the Queen Mary as well as various views of the Long Beach Marina and beachfront. I haven't been here at night, but this area is generally safe as far as I know, and there are a few beach restroom building stops along the way. I don't run myself, but this would probably be an excellent run if you made a round trip, at around 10 miles. It think it would be freezing at night no matter what time of year though! All in all, this is one of my favorite places to ride. I usually take the LA River bicycle path down to Shoreline Village, ride this path and then double back. Just be sure if you are coming back west that you don't do it too late in the day, as the winds really start to pick up and create some hellish headwinds! Check it out, you won't be disappointed. This Twin Peaks quote has been drilled in my head by my BF who happens to be the biggest Twin Peaks fan I have ever come across. I find that it fits perfectly with the events of my day today that brought me to the Shoreline Pedestrian Bike path. Today was "one of those days". I had people from all angles yelling, calling non-stop, and blaming me for everything that was going wrong. That's a pretty normal day in the mortgage biz, but on top of this my boss just pretty much threw his hands up and left me to do all the work while spouting out demands and bitching about how he wants out of this industry. It was a nightmare, to say the least. I was originally planning on skipping my lunch break to pound through a few problem files but by about 1:45pm I just couldn't take it anymore. I put on my gym shoes, slipped past my boss while he was on the phone and told the receptionist I was going to lunch. A walk was just what I needed so I headed towards the beach and just kept going until I hit sand. My first instinct was to call some of my close friends and vent but I couldn't get a hold of anyone and, in retrospect, I am glad they weren't available. My pace was pretty fast at first but as I kept looking out at the beach, then to the cute beach-front apartments, then back to the water to see sail boats on the horizon, my pace gradually mellowed as well as my frustration. To think, I had access to this kind of therapy the entire time I have worked in this office and was just now utilizing it. Lately I've been enjoying the Shoreline Bikepath on daily after-work walks with my good friend, in our dual attempt to shed some poundage and tone up for summer. I've used the bikepath on and off over the years with my bike and with roller skates, but I find I'm enjoying it much more as a pedestrian. Ending the day by walking along the beach is so much more enjoyable than trying to beat the crowd at the gym, and there's no equipment to lug around, except of course for our ultra stylish pocket pedometers. According to the city's website, the bikepath is 17 feet wide; two six-foot lanes for bicycles and one five-foot lane for pedestrians. It's one of 5 Class I (off road separate bike paths) in Long Beach. The official length of the bike path is 3.1 miles, from Alamitos Ave to 54th Place. However, you can continue much farther in either direction. Heading west past Alamitos, you can walk or ride along the Shoreline Aquatic Park Bike Trail and the downtown marina, and if you so choose you can hook up with the 29.1 mile Los Angeles River Bikeway. Or, continuing east past 54th Place, you can just walk one more block to 55th Place, where the Peninsula boardwalk starts and continues to the end of the peninsula. There's a wooden plank boardwalk on the seashore side of the peninsula, and a shorter cement walk on the interior bayshore side. I usually start smack in the middle of the bikepath and either walk east all the way past Shoreline Village and back, or walk west all the way to the end of the peninsula and back, and either way my round trip is about 6-7 miles. There are plenty of stairs from the bluff that lead down to the bikepath, or you can access it from one of the beach parking lots. You can rent skates, bikes, umbrellas, beach chairs, and surreys at the end of the bikepath closest to Shoreline Village. I've never done this, but I like seeing people enjoying themselves in the rented surreys on the weekend (though I'm sure they might annoy the serious bikers if they get in their way). I've only seen the rentals available on weekends, so I'm not sure if they're available during the week. For the past 13+ years, I'd always tell people if they asked, that even though I lived only a few blocks from the beach, I rarely ever went to the beach. Now it's nice to be able to say I'm there almost every day. Or at least, as long as Daylight Savings lasts. read more

This was my routine when I lived in Long Beach: Drive down Ocean Blvd and find free parking on one of the side roads facing the beach (7th Pl, 8th Pl, 9th Pl, etc). Climb down the tower of stairs toward the Pedestrian/Bikepath. Run a few miles down the beach and back. Return to car for water and beach towel. Chill on the beach and relax. Now that I live closer to Santa Monica beach, I really appreciate how nice the LB shore is. Yeah, they don't comb it enough, so it gets some seaweed junk built up in places. But it's so much more accessible and there aren't swarms of tourists. You can actually get some alone time with the beach! If you don't have a bike, there are a couple of places to rent them along the path. If you have a dog, there's a designated dog beach along the path. There are a couple of spots along the way where they hold free yoga on the beach (look it up!). There are also fully functioning bathrooms frequently along the path that aren't gross inside. You get an awesome view of the Queen Mary, and I've watched little planes take off from the port area by the ship. AND one day I saw a pair of dolphins swimming along right by the beach, no binoculars needed! You have a lot of options with this bike/ped path. Yeah, people don't stay in their lanes, but you just pass them and move on. Definitely worth checking out. read more

They have recently updated the old bathrooms and added a new block of them around the halfway point to the pier. UPDATE (Summer 2015): There is now a whole new path just for all pedestrians, located next to the bike path. Now runners and walkers have more space and don't have to worry about bicycling traffic! I love the Shoreline Bikepath. It's conveniently located right here in Long Beach. There are people going up and down the path from early in the morning until fairly late at night. This makes it a pretty safe place for a girl to run alone. It's perfect for a short run and great for a long run. I can't count how many miles I've run back and forth on this path. read more

I love this path. I probably visit this more than the gym. It's not only a wonderful bike path but it's a really nice running path as well. I use this to run/bike/roller skate year round. That's honestly the beauty of living in California, great weather all the time. We have to take advantage of this (especially since the cost of living is so high) and enjoy the public facilities! The prospect of riding my bike through heavy traffic, quite frankly, makes me a wee bit nervous. I love riding my bike, and if I could blissfully cycle through green pastures and grassy knolls, I would be in heaven. Given that we're in traffic congested California, my visions of bicycling among the dandelions and wide-eyed bunnies can sadly never be fulfilled. However, I will go so far to say that the Shoreline Pedestrian Bikepath comes in as a close second. I have only to endure a few blocks of car-ridden sheer terror before I can breathe a sigh of relief and merge onto the bikepath. It's an absolutely lovely stretch of sun, sand, and terrific views. The path is for all sorts of types. You have your sports bikers, your rollerbladers, your lazy cruisers. You've got the families, the couples, the runners (all of whom need to stay in their designated pedestrian lane, I might add). The Path of Populism! I find that there are constantly new things to discover. On one epic 14 mile ride we saw hippies dancing, the Queen Mary, a bull terrier convention, a British village, the aquarium...all while emitting zero carbon emissions. Now don't get me wrong, I'll brave the streets on my bicycle to get from point A to point B. But when I'm looking for a pleasant afternoon, I head straight for the bikepath. read more

"Its a thin line between love and hate." Enjoyment of the Long Beach bikepath is STRONGLY dependent on expectations. And adjustment accordingly. If what you want is a mosey of a bike ride, you will have no problem. Just chill and ride at a relaxed snail's pace, preparing to dodge multiple elements that will suddenly present themselves, because they will. If you approach the path with no real goal and with the ability to recognize the fact that it is a gorgeous day and we have this cool resource in our city, albeit marked by numbers of idiots misusing it, you will have good time. But make sure that you make that adjustment before riding, because . . . If you expect to be able to actually train in any reasonable way, forget it, because your heart rate WILL rise, surely, not from the healthy heartbeat increase of a sustained pedaling cadence, but from the near-heart attack experience of dodging the suddenly-appearing gangs of moronic spawn who weave in and out of the bike lanes with no sense of impending traffic doom. Apparently your tiny child being hit by a 22 pound bicycle bearing an 180 pound man who is riding at approximately 20 mpg is no cause for concern among the throngs of idiots who allow their children to sprawl across the path on the weekends. I don't need to tell any stories, because you have already read them all from other posters. These folks are cranky, yes, but cranky for a good reason. In order to save my sanity and good time, I basically quit expecting that the path would be any different, and this has helped me feel a lot better about using it. Just didn't like the feelings that it was bringing up in me. Life's too short. I use it for both non-goal oriented rides and power walks -- using the stairs for interval training is awesome and a great workout, as is running up the bike ramps adjacent to the stairways -- just make sure that the coast is clear so that you aren't being part of the problem. Having indulged in my neg-head little rant and having read those of others, who are understandably irate after near-death experiences, either of their own or submitted by their hands/arms/legs/bikes upon the children of others and rude asshole teens, allow me to submit: Santa Monica's Bikepath. Santa Monica's bikepath is approximately twice the width of ours, and the pedestrian area is designated and separated from the bike section by a curb that appears to run the entire length of the bike path. So, it is quite clear who belongs where and pretty hard to just merge over thoughtlessly, because you would hit the curb, fall down and go boom. But this fall would be from hitting a curb way before you hit a cyclist or anyone else using their designated lane. While some of these idiots have it coming, I still would much prefer someone to come to their senses without serious injury. And hey, it is not those little kids' faults, it is their parents not watching out for them. Pretty hard to be a total idiot about not realizing which section is for whom with such an impediment, although there would surely be those who would try. RIP. Do I have any creative funding ideas for this, city planners who might be reading? Not yet, but I am working on it! Woo hah! First time here and I loved it! Went here this morning for a nice jog...and it was definitely indeed a beautiful scenic jog! I'm feeling the runner's high :). You can park along Ocean Blvd. Running by the ocean really is refreshing and WAY better than the boring neighborhood in Sawtelle down Santa Monica Blvd, the place where your lungs fill with pollution and particles that's more detrimental to your health. I went today (Saturday noon) and it was not that crowded. There are lots of cyclists, runners and rollerbladers, and cool moms and dads running with the baby rollers. I hope to be a cool mom one day. My friend and I cruised this at about 230pm on a Thursday and it was pretty deserted and it was just soooo fun! We went all the way down the Peninsula to see the cute houses and then came back and stopped at Taco Surf for their $1 taco happy hour. One of my best afternoons in a long time! The views are great, the weather is usually perfect and you get to pass by dog beach and Belmont Shore too! Coming back at 5 something was definitely more crowded, but still very fun. Bike cruising is just about the most classic and relaxing activity/exercise you can do and Long Beach is the place to do it. read more

Convenient parking at the beach? RARE! I live within 2 miles of this place so I come about 3/week for a run because I cannot stand running on a treadmill at the gym. It's so much better getting fresh air and nice scenery as opposed to a musty gym staring at my reflection in the mirror, yuck =[ haha There's plenty of free 2-hour parking along Ocean, where you can just walk down the stairs to get to the path OR you can park in the metered-lot off Ocean/Junipero. The only thing that irks me is that the path is divided into three lanes, two for biking and one for pedestrians--I wish that people would stay in the designated areas AND that if you are walking (slowly, mind you) and see someone running towards you, perhaps people could not spread out along the whole pedestrian lane so that maybe the runner can move along without risking running into a bicyclist..? read more

This bike path is so smooth and the only thing you really have to worry about is the sand and some pedestrians that have no idea that there is a lane designated for them. No bumps or major holes on the bike path which made my experience enjoyable. At some point after passing shoreline village the bike path splits a bit and I found it after going through the parking lot, haha. It was my first time but I quickly discovered after turning around where the path split up and rode back to my final destination without any shortcuts through the parking lots. I recently moved to Long Beach and living so close to here inspires me to come almost every day. I've been walking on this path and working my way up to a run. Yeah yeah, I know, but this is the place to do it! I'm not sure how long this path stretches to, but it's great for some fresh air, exercise, and the outdoors. My only complaint is that the lane for the pedestrians is pretty narrow. For some reason, people just stop in the middle of the lane and I have to run on the bike lane or sand to pass them. Not ideal at all. However, this path is purely flat so very easy for beginners or if you like long walks on the beach. I can't wait to ride my bike here as well! read more
