Trio- eggs over medium, salad greens, and sweet potato oatmeal pancakes
    Jaime R.

Great spot for a delicious breakfast in downtown Madison. Came here on a Saturday in the late morning/early afternoon and had to wait for just a bit for a table to open. We ordered at the counter and grabbed a seat. I went with the trio and chose eggs, salad greens, and upgraded to the sweet potato oatmeal pancakes which was a great decision! The pancakes were so delicious and tasted like fall! They were nicely spiced but not overly sweet. Loved the whipped cream that came with the pancakes as well. The short stack was huge! Overall, we loved our meal and the lovely atmosphere. Would absolutely return!

Delicious breakfast with a very casual atmosphere. Their potatoes are the perfect amount of crispy and portion sizes are pretty big. Upset to hear they will be closing in a few days.

Short Stack Eatery is a great little restaurant in the heart of Madison. I went with one other person around 11 a.m. on Friday and it was abuzz with activity. Luckily, we didn't have to wait for a table. However, there are many times when I've walked by Short Stack and seen a line out the door and down the sidewalk. Quite frankly, this is not a spot worth waiting for. Don't get me wrong, the food was delicious. Everything was hot and tasty. The bacon was thick-cut and savory. The scrambled eggs were...scrambled eggs (pretty hard to mess up). But the blueberry pancakes were the star of the show. They were fluffy and I thought I could taste a bit of corn meal in there -- a nice touch! The blueberries were fresh and plentiful. Now if you're wondering why I didn't give Short Stack Eatery more than three stars, I get it. The food was great. But the price is unbelievably high. I don't plan on returning because I can't justify spending nearly $20 on eggs, bacon, and pancakes. I only drank water because I didn't feel like tacking on a few more bucks. The person I went with ordered the same thing, and after tip we were at almost $50 for our bill. There are plenty of other great diners in the area that'll offer you similar quality food for half the price (and no wait time either).

Stopped in while visiting Madison. They are known for the pancakes but I went in for the Cajun biscuits and gravy. It's all made from scratch and it shows. They also use farm fresh eggs. My daughter had the choc chip pancakes The only downfall is that they don't have an espresso maker so only drip coffee.

I took out lunch from here. Sweet potato oatmeal pancake was my item. I went for full size. And that was enough for 2 people. Pancake was good with excellent flavor.

This place was great. In Madison for the weekend and wanted to find a good breakfast spot. Was recommended short stack as the place to go. I really like the way the restaurant is set up, I feel like it provides a very efficient eating experience. Different than traditional wait service, you order your food in front and have access to self serve coffee (that you pay for), free water, and free condiments. When your food is ready, they will bring it out to your table. This solves a problem I have experienced a lot at restaurants where I feel like you are sitting with an empty glass of water/cup of coffee for a long period of time. Food here was excellent, I ordered a "trio" of 3 things (essentially a breakfast combo). I got chocolate chip pancakes, bacon and house potatoes. Pancakes tasted of a much higher quality than I am used to, seemed scratch made vs from a powdered mix. Bacon was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were seasoned and crisped to a level I did not think possible. I did not even get a chance to take a picture of the food because it was so good!

Wonderful place to stop for breakfast right on state street. This place is usually pretty packed but they have a nice patio and service is usually very quick. They have some really tasty vegan and gluten free pancakes and their eggs Benedict is one of my favorites in Madison.

I the focus on locally sourced ingredients including absolutely delicious blueberry pancakes with real Wisconsin maple syrup. Yummy ! The coffee was a step above normal breakfast restaurants coffee and locally roasted (try the driftless). Usually when UW is in session there is a line so we were lucky on Saturday after the farmers market to get in and a place to sit. It is a bit eclectic as my coffee mug said Madison Sewer District This would be a great place to go before UW football games as they serve bloody Mary's and beer too. Highly recommend if you can get in without a wait

Food: 5 The blind special was really good--nice that they don't skimp out on their bargains :-) Service: 5 Very kind staff. My friend's eggs were scrambled instead of overeasy (as she had ordered them), and they switched them without any fuss! Ambiance: Very eclectic environment with interesting decorations. The lighting is fun to look at, and I'm glad they're outwardly supportive of minorities and certain nonprofits :-)

We arrived about 8:15 on a Thursday morning. There was no line and we were greeted promptly. The have an extensive menu with something everyone would like. I ordered the blueberry pancakes and had a cup of coffee. The coffee is self serve using the vacuum pumper system. The wait for our food was insignificant and the wait staff very pleasant. The blueberries were fresh and had that wonderful pop to them. Very tasty, great experience.

Madison seems to love this place. There was a line 5 minutes after it opened when we went. The next two days we walked by and there was a line 15 deep both times. They are doing something right. I'm not from Wisconsin so I just must not understand. Don't get me wrong. It was perfectly fine. That's it, it was fine. Not mind blowing by any means for a breakfast. The Bar. We sat at the bar and the service was great. They have a full bar and you can order booze as soon as they open. Including pours of whiskey is you so desire. I love bloody Mary's but I hated theirs. It's just a weird beety thing. To be fair they give a warning and offer a sample before you order but beware. The food. It was a bit pricey. The portions were average and so was the food. We went there because it opens early. If you are looking for a place to grab an early breakfast and a drink this is your jam. If you're looking for a place to blow your mind this ain't that.

Food was delicious!! Best eggs I've had in awhile!! Everything was cooked perfectly. Milkshake was tasty too! They did have a lot of rules, stand here, wait outside if there are 2 people inside. I guess they get busy and it's first come first serve on tables, but besides that it was cute!

The breakfast trio is amazing! Came in for brunch around 11:30 and was able to be sat in around 20 minutes. Very cutesy and unlimited coffee

The biscuits and gravy-- not particularly spicy but with amazing flavor. My guy couldn't even wait for the pic to dig in!

I was skeptical when I realized we had to order our food at the counter vs. being seated and served. I didn't like having to pay gratuity prior to being provided any service. We ordered Chilaquiles and the French Toast. The chilaquiles was not authentic but we really liked it! Would definitely recommend. Same for the French toast! Yummy. The fruit was so sweet and fresh. I've ordered the same thing both times because I loved it so much- the Three Grain & Tempeh Bowl. It's so fresh and delicious, filling without making you feel over-full and gross. She had the Mushroom & Gouda Omelette and also very much enjoyed. The seating space is small so you can definitely run into a wait during busy times, but service moves fast! You'll order at the counter and be handed a number to take to your table, where the food will be delivered. During busy times I've seen them try to help coordinate seating arrangements but it is otherwise largely a seat yourself sort of place. Next on my list are the lemon ricotta pancakes which are reportedly famous and a turmeric cookie I spotted in the bakery section :)

It was off the highway, so I thought I would give it a go. Walked in and it was what you would expect from a Wisconsin diner -- old carpeting, waitresses who are lifers, and signage from the bygone era. I sat at the bar, with barstools that came about 4 feet off the ground, and asked the cordially waitress what was good. She rattled off about 3/4 of the breakfast menu so I needed a few minutes. A few minutes passed and I went with the Krab Cakes Benedict (why the K?) and the Cottage Platter. The crab cakes were decent (definitely better than the Cottage Platter), but very crisp on the outside, straddling the line of burnt, and somewhat cooked on the inside. Light on the seasoning. As they say on the cooking shows, it was screaming for some acidity...or in this case some Old Bay. Then the Cottage Platter, which I was very much looking forward to, fell flat for me. The hashbrowns had a funky taste to them, which I couldn't quite place. And again, overall, the dish was lacking in flavor. Would I go out of my way to hit this place up again? Most likely not. If I was in the area and wanted to try something else, I probably would.

You can tell that storage space is at a premium, with boxes stashed in overhead areas or equipment in the bathrooms. The staff there were very pleasant and helpful. Ended up getting a Chai Latte (extra foam) in a mug. It didn't take long to make, and they delivered it out to the table. It was an excellent drink -- hot, flavorful, extra foam, and not too sweet. A joy to drink. The atmosphere is a bit manic. With the tight seating, you can feel a bit claustrophobic, or on the other hand, like you are at a concert and getting energy from the crowd. We had reservations, so we were seated right away which was a plus. Also, I will say I don't think any of the issues we had were because of our waitress. She was super friendly and quick enough to take our orders on a day when there restaurant seemed full enough, but manageable. We got our drink orders in and our food at the same time to speed up the process for getting little kids food, and the waitress even took note of that. We also ordered an appetizer to help during the wait. It took a while for the drinks to come out, but they were all rather tasty. I think my apple cider mocktail was the best and refreshing since it was getting hot in the restaurant with the sun beating in. Our food however took forever and the kids meals did not come out any earlier than everyone else. One person in our group also initially didn't get his meal, which the waitress apologized and said there was a mixup in the kitchen. That's fine, it happens, but then the staff running meals tried to bring him the wrong order 3 times. The rest of us were all finished eating by the time he finally got his food. Overall, the food was fine. I got the eggs benedict which was a little underdone on the eggs for me as the whites were too runny for me. The kids chicken nuggets were pretty tasty with a flaky breading. I heard decent reviews of the breakfast burger, but the thing that was the best to us was the breakfast sandwich. It was quite messy, but the messiness of the sauce was worth it. We also got an appetizer of the cinnamon roll. I feel like it's a little mislabeled though, as it was more like a morning bun with some frosting/glaze over the top. Tasted pretty good and helped keep kids entertained for a while. Overall, the food was fine, but the experience wasn't great. With the multiple mixups in orders and getting a little green house effect going with the sun shining in, there wsnt a great feeling when leaving. Again, I don't think it was our waitresses fault, so not sure what was going on in the kitchen.
