Shorty's Steakhouse (Garrett, Indiana) - looking for a unique steakhouse, not too far outside Fort Wayne? Shorty's is one of the Salvatori's Restaurant Group offerings that is located on Main Street in Garrett. Head north on 327 to the downtown area. Shorty's is set in a small and older building located on the east side of the road. You will need to park on the street - which isn't an issue in Garrett. As I said... Shorty's is a smaller venue. The building holds about 10 people at the bar and 90 inside dinners. The outdoor patio appears to seat about 50 people. Shorty's is always busy - especially on Friday/Saturday nights. So, make a reservation via their website. The larger side room can hold bigger groups of 8-14 people. Otherwise you are limited to a table of four. Upon entering the restaurant you will quickly encounter the host stand right at the door. There is no real foyer area to wait for your table. You may feel uncomfortably close to a stranger if things are backed up. The bar area is one of the first things you see. Legend has it that this bar was relocated from a Chicago area business who had it installed in around the time the 1893 World's Fair was in Chicago. The bar wood work, design and finishing are gorgeous! Very inviting. The older part of restaurant retains the decor of the old building - attractive dark wood interiors/fixtures, green plaster ceilings and hardwood floors. All are very comfortable and welcoming. The host and service team were very friendly and helpful. There was plenty of help to hustle drink orders, refills and follow up. The kitchen is very small. Food orders may take a bit of time when they are busy. So be prepared to relax, enjoy a bar drink, converse and admire the renovations. Shorty's has a decent variety to offer on their smaller food and drink menus. They are more than just steaks. In general, most items are a bit pricey...but probably normal for most area steakhouses. Here is a run down of the food we ordered: -Table Bread: nothing to special; white bread roll with a firm exterior and soft inside with basic butter; tasted like it was freshly baked -House Salad: nice sized salad with a fresh taste and ingredients; several side vegetables and cheese to dress up/accent the salad; the honey mustard dressing tasted familiar - probably not made in house -Crab Cakes: my wife loved her crab cakes; tender, full of crab and seafood tastes; nicely grilled exterior -Prime Rib & Baked Potato: delicious taste, tender and smaller amounts of fat; my medium rare request seemed to be more medium as I didn't see much pink coloring; the real horseradish lacked the usual bold kick that I except. The potato was baked perfectly and accented with the usual dollops of smooth butter and sour cream. Good steakhouse choice. Overall, Shorty's offers good food & drink selections in a unique setting. Remember, Shorty's is a very popular place and fills up quickly. Therefore, plan ahead and make a reservation. Shorty's is definitely worth a trip to Garrett to give them a try. read more

Good came out quickly and it was all so delicious. The tuna tartare special was fantastic! Might be one of the best tuna dishes I've ever had. The prime rib was flavorful and the horsey sauce good. Was in town for the weekend and stopped in for dinner. Atmosphere is a little dark but nice. Tables around the bar can be a little loud but not terrible. The appetizer could have been presented better, maybe chopped tomatoes instead of just sliced once... dishes are not cohesive with photos. But was served vey good and fresh. Drinks- I ordered raspberry lemon drop martini, it was great. Appetizer- we ordered the coconut shrimp, blah! No coconut flavor at all. Ordered years ago and they were amazing, large and flavorful, not this time.. Bread brought to table was gross, no flavor and butter was just plain. Nothing special about it. Dinner- everything was okay (pictured) Service- slow (delayed delivery of a soda to one in our party and wrong appetizer brought). Staff- friendly but not prompt check ins About 3 Years ago I would come here weekly and everything was delicious. Then I started to notice differences in flavors and quit going weekly. Living up to the name shortys, I felt shorted. My first experience was awesome 5 star review raving about the food and worth the price. The tables have turned, prices jumped and food preparation has been all been forgotten. What happened? Our Ribeye steak ordered medium rare was more like beef jerky. No juice, no pink meat inside, just tough. The shepherds pie was good but nothing to write home about, 48 bucks for a small shallow appetizer style dish with very salty mashed potatoes on top. Our guests had Cod platters, they did not rave about it so would say it was par for the course, but the price!!! Holy cod fish, you would have thought they had ordered lobster. Again not sure what is happening in Garret but the prices don't match the food. Hopefully they will find their way back to realistic prices for what they are serving or make sure the quality of food being served is to die for. read more

What a cute little place with parking on the road in front!! I tried the valentine's special margarita, the sweet tart cocktail, and the carmel martini. The margarita and sweet tart martini were my favorites. The three cheese hash was so sensational, I think next time I'll get 2 orders of it instead 2 different sides!!!! The peanutbutter pie was spectacular!! It would be even better with a scoop of ice cream. Some guy in jeans was getting his ninja moves on right in front of the bathroom 15 minutes begore closing. I think he might have been an employee because he went behind the bar. They should probably charge less for their food if it's that casual. I've been here twice. Shortys is good and getting better I believe. I've been here a handful of times. This time was the best by far. We went on a Monday, which you can't beat the $6 martinis! They were very good. The steak tips and stroganoff were very tasty and have been a staple for a long time there. I had the chicken, it was good mainly because it was smothered. If it wasn't for that it would have been dry. To me it appeared to be one chicken breast sliced into two thin cutlets. Overall still a decent dish for a chicken dish. The soup du jour was a mushroom soup and my wife absolutely loved it. She ordered a couple cups of it because it was so good. I do like the ambience there, it's a little loud but overall good. The service was also very good. They were attentive and we had a manager check on us a couple times as well to make sure we were enjoying our time. I have had a couple dishes here that weren't amazing- but this time stood out to me. Will definitely be back again soon! read more

I've always enjoyed my meals at Shorty's in Garrett, but this last time I went approximately 3 hours after I ate there I started violently puking and having the worst diarrhea. (ik gross) My boyfriend also had very bad diarrhea following the next day and is still happening. I know the cyclosporiasis is going around right now so I called them the next day to tell them that I had fallen ill after eating there. The woman said she couldn't find the manager so she took my name and number and said she would call me back once she could get the manager. Well... I never got a call back. I really was just calling because I wanted to make sure nobody else had gotten sick/ would get sick in the per see able future. I noticed when I was eating my ceasar salad quite a bit of my lettuce had a pinkish tint to it, but I didn't think anything of it considering I had ate there many times before and never had an issue, but since this specific parasite can be on fresh produce I feel it wasn't a coincidence. I am still currently sick and so is my boyfriend. I really wish they would've at least called me back. read more

In years past this was a consistently good place to eat, but no more. Not one dish served to our table was tasty or prepared even acceptably. I ordered a Caesar salad and the beef stroganoff. Romaine was wilted, croutons oily and the dressing was dull. The rolls were soft and somewhat soggy (really, white rolls??) and not sure what the "butter" actually was. Whipped (and no taste). Noodles were overcooked (sent back because the dish was barely warm) and soggy. Brussel sprouts were burned to a crisp and when the wait person was asked if this was how they were normally served she did agree they were burned and replaced them with properly roasted brussel sprouts. The salmon was dry and not at all flavorful. Buffalo chicken was ok if the idea is to batter so heavily the chicken is dry. I hope the new owners will take this to heart and restore Shorty's to its former reputation as a good local restaurant that serves delicious food. Our server, Vivian, is the reason for the 5 stars. We had a party of six and Vivian was top notch on a busy Saturday night. Our cocktails and beers along with our appetizers, arrived in quick fashion. The haddock fingers and crab cakes were good starters and we would certainly order again The majority of the group had filets...make sure you order the Asiago grits as one of your side's, you won't regret it. There were clean plates all around, but we were able to make room for the peanut butter pie. I'm glad we did, as it was one of the better pb pies I've had. Give 'ol Shorty's a try and ask for Vivian if you can pick your server. One thing I do have to mention is that their new side room is nice but L-O-U-D with those high ceilings. read more

2 things negative - Pepsi products (only diet Pepsi for diabetics), no sweet tea, and I honestly thought the cole slaw was spoiled- but apparently they use apple cider vinegar. Husband liked it so each their own. Everything else was great. I had pollock, fries, and green beans. Husband had Jamaican me crazy burger and son had deluxe cheeseburger. Daughters had fish sandwich and other had chicken fingers. Parents 1 had shrimp the other pollock with sweet potato and green beans. Waitress was good also. I was looking for a local place while on a business trip. I decided on Shorty's. I am glad I did. The staff were so friendly and attentive. The menu had a lot of good choices and I settled on the shaved prime rib flatbread with a side of Brussels. The sauce was something different than normal. It was more like a spread. The spread had nice a herb flavor. The flatbread was topped with a balsamic glaze. I complimented my dinner with a gin and lavender martini. This was a very tasty cocktail. Stopped in for an early dinner. Shrimp dinner was excellent sweet potato is very good. Paddock fish dinner is very good breading on fish has a sweet taste to it. Chicken tenders were good. We went for lunch after a round of golf at Garrett Country Club. There we not many here. We had no wait. The inside of this place is perfect. Cozy but not cramped. We all loved our meal. I had a blue cheese burger. I didn't get a picture. It was awesome. A top 3 burger of all time for me. Temperature was perfect. The way it was cooked was perfect. I love burgers and my tolerance to the varying ways to cook them is high. I am not picky. But, this was fantastic. Eat here with lots of confidence for sure. read more

Went for a neighborhood gathering tonight at our favorite restaurant, Shortys. We have been coming here with our neighbors the last 8 years and it never disappoints on food and service. The atmosphere has always been amazing, but since the new addition it made it easier to host big neighborhood get togethers. Tonight, we had some neighbors that had retired a few years ago and move from our street that were able to come back to visit all of us. Shorty's is a fantastic restaurant, whether you choose to take into consideration its unexpected location off Garrett's main drag...or not. After your first visit, you may mistakenly believe you "discovered" this awesome new restaurant in middle of Garrett, until you realize the smarter locals have been visiting since its opening...so why did it take you so long to visit? Some of my immediate family members are obsessed with Shorty's (and its cosmo martinis), so I tend to visit pretty frequently when in town. It is located in a renovated storefront, with a tin-stamp-looking ceiling and beautiful wooden bar. The service is great; you don't see a lot of turnover of their core servers, and "Shorty" is friendly and very welcoming...and well, short. If you grew up around Garrett and northern Allen county, you'll probably see a lot of familiar faces. My more memorable orders: - The almond-crusted grouper w. jalapeno tartar; I usually don't like mayo slathered all over my entrees, but really love the spicy kick of the jalapeno; - Homemade salad dressing options, especially the peanut & sesame vinagrette; - Scallops (especially when incorporated into the daily specials); -Jamaican Jerk burger w. pepper jack; -Peppercorn sirloin (if looking for a cheaper beef item. The prices are the best part. Cocktail, scallops and steaks are more expensive at the better-known steakhouses the next county over, but Shorty's versions taste just as good or better than their "big-city" competitors. Word about Shorty's has gotten out over the last few years, with a more recent stellar review in the local Ft. Wayne paper, so be prepared for a possible wait during the typically busy hours. Shorty's is a popular local place and the main reason is...it's the best Garrett has to offer. It's nice decor. Good wait staff. People always make you feel welcome. Old charm feel with custom wood work, dark hardwood floors, and nice art work. Great looking bar adjacent to then dining area. We went there day before Valentine's Day to avoid the crowds. But kitchen is inconsistent. Been there 4 times and half the time steaks were overcooked. Good soups and cocktails but again if you're going to be a steakhouse with above average dinner prices you should know how to cook a steak no matter what day. Lunch is always good so start there. Sucks because we REALLY want this to be a favorite but quality has to get better. Suggest management spend more time on quality out of the kitchen. read more

Have been here 2 times and enjoyed the food and service. Went again and made reservations 3 weeks in advance. We were sat at a table by the door that looked like it was a serving station. Rolls looked to be freezer burnt! Prices have gone up and service was just mediocre. Steak was severely undercooked and had to take back to kitchen to cook longer. They didn't remove the cheesy potato casserole and when the steak came back out the casserole was burnt! Likely won't go back again for the price! Shorty's was our favorite steakhouse until recently. With the add on, it now seams like a family restaurant. What we loved about Shortys was the adult atmosphere it provided. The last few time we were in, we could hear crying babies and screaming kids. Not so much an adult atmosphere anymore. Also, wait staff has declined since going under a new GM. Our last visit was greeted with the wait staff bad mouthing the old GM, spreading news about his departure that probably shouldn't be shared. It left us with a bad taste in our mouths. Stopped in for our first trip to Shorty's and as we walked in the front door were a bit surprised to see only TALL tables :) However as we looked further back there were some booths and regular tables! Nice atmosphere and our waitress was prompt to wait on us. We went with a 12 oz. ribeye and a 6 oz filet both medium and the potato hash and salads. The salads were excellent as were both our meals, both prepared just as we requested. My only small issue was that I'm not a fan of rosemary on my steak and it came out with rosemary on it, I wish I had known but it was still the best steak I've had in a LONG time!
