The meat seemed old; the tomatoes were pre-ripened; and they put huge chunks of onion on it. The pita bread was greased up and looked like it was rolled over by a car. Small older building but everything was clean. There were a few high tables and a bar with stools lining the window. Lots of character to the place. Good prices, plenty of menu choices, and the staff was friendly enough. I ordered the double cheeseburger. It was grilled on the flat top and then chargrilled, always a good sign of a good burger. Shorty's is a local spot with so much more potential than I feel like they live up to. The size/portions, the preparation, and taste all missed the mark. We had a Gyro Pig Out, plain cheeseburger, and cheese fries. Pig Out Gyros - way more onions than necessary on here. We were disappointed that there wasn't as much meat as we'd expected and the tzatziki was also all in one spot. The meat is the same you'd get on the spit at any Greek joint out here, a little thin cut and crispy instead of feeling like a nice chunk of meat. Plain cheeseburger- I don't ask for much, seeing as this is a very boring order, but I didn't expect the entire thing to be dry the way it was. The cheeseburgers we'd scoop up off the line in high school had more moisture than this burger. Cheese fries - what? When the guy at the window asked if needed a fork for this dish, I should've known. This is a wad of cheese thrown upon a few squishy fries. Ive been ordering here for years, trying to keep a small local business alive. I ordered a gyros, pizza puff and fries and it was the only thing I had eaten that day. It gave me the worst case of food poisoning I have ever experienced. Haven't been here in years since I moved away in 2015. I used to order catering for our company meetings. I remember my colleagues enjoyed their BBQ ribs, wings, gyro sandwiches, burgers and salads. The red and yellow Vienna Beef umbrella's and signage lure you in, old school drive inn looking place but don't fall for it, keep driving. Two hot dogs everything with fries and a drink. Long wait for two dogs served on a rectangular plate with a small handful of fries. Initial reaction, no sport peppers? go back they add 4 peppers and I get a look from the cook. OK, take a bite I'm getting no snap and a strange taste of like the little wieners in a can. Very thin hotdog inside a very dry bun, no celery salt bland dog. Tried a few fries, unsalted and nothing special. One bite is all it takes, threw out the entire meal. Inside, the floor at the fountain drinks was very sticky and the AC must not work very well, warm inside on an 85 degree day. The windows and door glass all dirty. The outside seating area is large but the Umbrellas could all use a good scrub down. Bunch of clutter at the back door area. I have driven by this place a million & one times & decided to give it a shot. I was surprised as all hell when I saw that not only did they have a drive-thru, but the intercom system was working. I ordered a half slab of ribs which came with two sides, which I chose rice & Greek potatoes. I also added a side of the Jumbo Barbecue style (I could have gotten them Buffalo style) wings. The ribs were ok. They weren't awful. They certainly are not better than Sweet Baby Ray's down the street. The rice was pretty salty but ok I guess. The Greek potatoes were not good. Very very salty. The 5 wings I ordered? Based on the appearance alone, I didn't really want to eat them. They slathered so much sauce on these damn things that, really... that is all you tasted. If I were to rate the wings separately on a 5 star scale, I would give them a 1. The guys serving you are definitely no nonsense. They barely interact with you. I didn't go inside, so I couldn't tell you i about the overall ambiance of the place. Based on the view from outside, I wouldn't expect much. Over all??? I'd give it 2 out of 5 stars. A solid 3 stars, which means that Shorty's is A-OK. Not fancy, family run fast food. The food is good. My favorite items are the spaghetti soup, the fries and I always enjoy chicken on a pita. Fries are great - one of the very few who aren't trying to give their customers a heart attack with the ridiculous amount of salt used. Gyros are great - they add a lot of meat which could be a good thing or a bad depending on the person, but you can always take off the extra. Shorty's is a strangely shaped brightly lit fast food eatery located off of Irving Park Road in Wood Dale. The unique design of the building itself reminds me of an old time drive in. And while it is a drive thru and eat in only establishment it retains a level of 50s charm. There's a deck with a few tables situated if you choose to eat outside, and a counter with some stools and a few tables inside. When visiting Shorty's I was unusually hungry and in an experimental mood, so I decided to try two items, a hot dog and a burger. The hot dog I received came on a regular non-poppy seed bun. The first thing I noticed was the huge amount of celery salt applied to the dog itself. There was a thick pickle spear, nearly as thick as the hot dog itself on top. The tomato slices were thick and not too sloppy or wet. The onion, mustard and relish application was fine, and there were a few hot peppers on the dog As I took my first bite pickle flavor easily overpowered everything else. From then on I had to remove the pickle, once I did that, this was a pretty good tasting hot dog. The burger I received was pretty average for a mom and pop fast food place. The beef was good, the bun was soft, but nothing jumped out about the quality, texture or taste of this burger to reach the level of exceptional. Overall I liked Shorty's, it's a solid mom and pop fast food place. I like the aesthetic of the place. The employees were nice and friendly and service was great. The food was well within the range of average. I would come back here, but I wouldn't go out of my way to stop. This place is A-OK in my book and earns three stars. read more

They're totally growing on me! Plus, I lied. I've tried the chocolate shake again. It's yummy. Nothing fancy, but tasty. I've used the drive thru a few times now and have found the right food in the bag once I got back to the office. That's always highly appreciated. Recently, I tried the chicken breast on a pita. The grilled chicken is seasoned nicely and pretty juicy. The pita has always been fresh. The onion rings strike another positive note. Today's lunchtime visit provided a nice surprise. While waiting for my lunch, I was already wondering how I would eat all of the food that I ordered. There was no way, but then the kind gal at the window let me know that they threw in a free cup of today's chicken and rice cream soup. So, I'm not a cream soup kind of girl, but I opened it and found large chunks of chicken in what was obviously a homemade cup of soup. It was phenomenal! There's a reason they threw in that soup. I've also tried the steak sandwich and philly cheese steak, both are solid winners. Figure that dinner for two will cost around $17-22. The location looks like an old drive-in. It's clean, and it's where my wife and I go every time we need something good, quick, and cheap. You can't miss on their daily special. The daily special is always good. This place just rocks...it's that simple. On 3/11/2014 I tried the Maxwell Street burger and the chicken Parmesan sandwiches. My life changed for the better after having them. I can say 3 things. 1. Fries weren't bad; fresh/hot. 2. Pulled pork had good BBQ sauce on it and they didn't charge me for extra sauce. 3. Orange Fanta had bubbles. That's the best I can say. The pulled pork was not smoky like real pulled pork, the bigger lumps were kinda dry, and I definitely needed the extra sauce, but it wasn't terrible. The terrible part was the bun (like a hot dog roll) which was inedible; hard and rubbery like it had been microwaved. I could not bite pieces off or chew it; I had to eat the pork off with a fork. Which I guess saved me some carbs, but still. Maybe they let them age so they don't fall apart when soaking up Italian beef juice, but it was awful. Probably won't be back anyway, was just driving by, but I would suggest getting something else. read more

(They have a drive thru, but not the 50's era drive-in service.) Surprisingly deep menu has some great BBQ options including full rack of ribs. The prices are very reasonable, like everything on their menu has a good price that I also consider cheap. The service was also fast. The food was served quickly. Family run fast food that is worth the stop. Near the train station and the bowling alley. Gyros excellent, sauce is tasty and homemade. Chicken pita is juicy, flavorful and pita if soft and fluffy. It's been awhile but I must report that they also have stellar Greek salads. The "small" pretty much filled me up with a grilled cheese. They serve it with a piping hot pita and some fab homemade Greek dressing. Tons of feta, red onions, cucumber, tomato and fresh crisp lettuce, topped with oregano. I should note there were only two Kalamata olives on it, but that's OK with me since I'm not really an olive fan. (Olive oil yes, olives no.) The grilled cheese was nice and hot and cheesy, but nothing special. They do offer it with bacon. :) But oh, that Greek salad... Now I want to try all their other salads! I've only eaten the hotdogs and fries here, but I LOVE Shorty's! A hot dog, fries and drink for $4.35 (tax included) just can't be beat. And it's a good quality Chicago style dog. Best crinkle fries I've ever had. I usually prefer a shoestring type fry, but I could make a meal out of their crinkle fries alone. They're excellently seasoned...not exactly "Seasoned Fries" but I think they also have cajun fries if that's the type of fry you're looking for. But I personally prefer the good old fashioned ones.
