A nice variety in their hot deli case. 12/29/2022
    Lisa P.

We have stopped at Thorp Fruit & Antiques I don't know how many times over the last four years on road trips to and from Puyallup/Spokane?! Always filling our gas tank at Shree's Travel Plaza, paying at the pump, never entering the store. Only recently did we notice the sign reading Best Food. This last trip home after the Holidays we just wanted to get off the road as soon as possible. With all the crazy Weather and way too many accidents so our stops were limited and quick. We used the rest room at Thorp Fruit, filled our vehicle at Shree's and decided to give the huge variety of foods in the well labeled and priced hot deli case a try. We were not disappointed. I got mini tacos ($3.49??) that were flavorful and surprisingly crispy. Plus directly behind me was a small reach in fridge with lots of Jack Linx options. I chose cheese and Salami ($2.49) to accompany my crackers I had in the car. Another in our party had chicken strips and wedge cut fries. Reported the chicken strips were great but the fries were too greasy and not fresh. And our third party was also pleased with their choices. Sorry, I don't remember what they were. Also offered are about every bottled beverage you can think of, an Icee machine, air pot coffees and so on. We enjoyed a half mango, half cotton candy Icee. And lastly, as pictured, many away from home self care needs available while on the road, if needed.

    Trash can blues.

I had never hiked up this way (did fly fish it last year though). While driving up the valley, I happened upon this little grocery. I didn't have a Wilderness Pass, so I figured I'd stop on in and grab one (as well as some beef jerky for me and my dogs). This place is fairly small. The person running the place was sitting in what looked like an attached living room to the store (her cute kid was playing around on the floor playing)--definitely a homey feel to the place. The woman was nice and answered my basic questions about getting to the trailhead. "yeah, the roads alright, but there are some potholes to look out for", she said. "Potholes" turned out to be the buzzword of the day for me. If you need to pick up any last minute provisions, Teanaway Mercantile is your only options in this beautiful peace of the world.

The new owners seem really great and are still doing renovations and cleaning up the place, with future hopes of running a little sandwich/snack counter once their permits get approved. I'm a big fan of the unmanaged Twentynine Pines campground just a few miles into the hills past the Mercantile and now that this place is open again, I don't have to drive the ~20 miles back into Cle Elum for any supplies I forget. The prices are higher than Safeway and etc, but they're not outrageous and the convenience is worth it. I'm helping host a 30+ person event out that way this weekend and found that the Mercantile wasn't missing anything I might need during the event; they've got beer, propane, food, drinks, supplies, tools, and more. Their plans are to stay open year-round and I hope these guys can make enough to keep their doors open for a while.

ATTN: Women! Avoid this gas station and encourage any men & family members who support you to do…read morethe same! The male (i'm won't call him a man cause he is not) - clearly HAS ZERO respect for women. We stopped with family to get gas and desperately use the restroom. The restrooms were locked (which is not foreign to us), but when we asked for the key, the person indignantly looked me up and down and informed me that I MUST make a purchase in order to use the restroom and then proceeded to deny my 11 year-old son a key to the men's restroom! It was only when I told the guy behind the counter my husband was purchasing gas, that he reluctantly gave me a key to the woman's restroom. When I opened the door to the restroom there were 4 stalls with a line of other woman with children waiting outside! However, all but one of the stalls were actually usable! The others were backed up or had TP stuck to seat which was DISGUSTING! The place smelled awful! It clearly had been AGES (looked like weeks!) since the place had been cleaned. There was zero toilet paper in the stalls, no running hot water, no hand soap and only a blow dryer (as they are too cheap to provide paper towels). I was completely grossed out! I wouldn't be surprised if the public health services haven't fined them! When I went to hand the key back to the guy I nicely attempted to inform him of the state of the woman's room was (which no doubt he HAD to know about) and he refused to look at me. Even though he wasn't assisting anyone at the counter, he directed me to put the key (which was attached to a stick) on the counter as he clearly didn't want to touch it. I felt like chucking it. Leavenworth has always had friendly businesses and this filling station used to be managed/owned by a really lovely family for years, but clearly they sold it and the new owners (who appear to be Persian) clearly have zero interest in providing any customer service or treat their woman customers with any respect. While waiting to purchase drinks for our kids we watched as a another woman who had an adorable toddler made a purchase and the man was so disrespectful and rude towards the woman who was trying to pay while trying to keep her little one from wondering off and touching other things. However when my husband went to pay, he was given the courtesy of eye contact. What a tool! I left the shop completely disgusted by the guy's arrogant behavior. My husband saw and completely agreed the guy's behavior very rude. We will not be returning!

I especially loved their in-house "Dan's" label products. I brought several items home with me, including their BBQ rub, black peppercorns, and of course, coffee! Their hours are incredibly convenient (5:00 AM - 10:00 PM), which makes it easy to pop in anytime. We even visited during a snowstorm -- and yes, they were open! What a hidden gem!! Their $6.99 sandwich deal is an awesome value, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a hearty, affordable hike lunch. You can choose from one of their set sandwiches (like the Reuben, Silly Phillies, or Wild Turkey) or build your own from a generous selection of breads, cheeses, condiments, meats, and veggies. And it comes with a complimentary bag of chips! - Reuben - a warm, pressed classic. Generous corned beef, melted Swiss, tangy sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing on grilled bread. Super satisfying and perfect trail fuel - Turkey Cranberry - layers of turkey with cranberry spread, cheese slices, and fresh fixings. Sweet, savory, and delicious The deli counter is right inside on your left when you walk in. Everyone behind the counter was incredibly friendly, genuinely chatting with us about our hike plans and offering samples from the bakery. Our sandwiches were made fresh and hot in minutes! The overall vibe is that of a local neighborhood grocery with staff who truly care. We loved it so much, we came back for round two. Don't miss this spot if you're prepping for a hike -- Dan's does a trail lunch done right!
