One of the benefits of my job is that I get paid to travel the "backroads". By backroads, I mean the non-Interstates. These are the roads that carry people and goods from small towns across America. I have been coming to the Kaplan & Delcambe areas for over half-a-decade and I am actually butt-hurt that our partners-customers have never taken me. This is Oyster Heaven; and by that I mean the place where fresh, big, raw oysters died in my belly. The oyster boats come up the waterway from the Gulf and drop off baskets of oysters almost as fast as the workers here can sort them and shuck only the best. Yes, you read that right: they actually send the inferior oysters off to places like DFW (where I live) and they only serve the best here. If it tells you anything, I ordered a dozen raw for an appetizer, THEN I had another ten charbroiled oysters aka "the Sampler" as an entree. Yum! We enjoyed our meal. They didn't have boiled crawfish for lunch so we ordered grilled tails. Everything in this restaurant (and this part of state) is breaded and/or fried. Salads are cheddar cheese romaine lettuce grape tomatoes croutons and standard dressings. Nothing fancy though Shucks has full bar. Dining partner ordered seafood pasta which was a thicker spaghetti with a lighter non spicy sauce. All entrees come with white roll/bread. This is a comfort food parish eatery and a good spot to soak up Cajun culture. read more

A confession: I didn't consume any seafood Instead I had their hamburger steak. What I had was pretty good for a mostly seafood restaurant. It was basically a hamburger, without a bun, on a plate, with tasty brown gravy and added a slice of cheese to it. That meal was pretty good, not stellar though was solid. The fries I had were particularly tasty. What set this apart for me was two things. A lack of seafood smell, which I find appealing, and the service. The wait staff was particularly attentive. We were on our way to New Orleans from Houston through Creole country when we got hungry near Abbeville. A quick YELP search turned up this gem! I saw the large size of the oysters on another patrons table and immediately decided on a raw dozen to start. Check out the photos below. These were the freshest, meatiest and most tasty oysters that I had had in years. My girlfriend and I then tried a cup of their gumbos. She chose Seafood, I chose the Smoked Duck & Andouille. Both were excellent! Rich and complex flavors that tingled on our tongues. For our entrees, we both chose the Pan Fried Shrimps in olive oil, butter and garlic with New Red Potatoes and a Fresh Garden Salad with oil & vinegar dressing. The shrimps were perfectly cooked so that they were not rubbery or mushy. The potatoes tasted like they were right from a garden out back. This was an outstanding meal all around and our server was excellent. The restrooms were very clean which is very important when you are on the road. It is very important that a restaurant follow safe food handling procedures especially when dealing with seafood. 1) oyster stew served cold, not ice cold but even worse at room temperature. Bacteria bacteria bacteria. 2) seafood platter: fried shrimp, oysters and fish were perfect. Piping hot. Stuffed shrimp, stuffed crab and whatever the other stuffed thing was, room temp. Now this was worth a few miles drive to get to, and it couldn't be easier to find. Right where the highway from Lafayette dumps you in the middle of town, there it is, right in front of you. I'm not an oyster fan, so I had the crab cake - just loaded with rich crab - and the fried shrimp, which were as good as the menu said. Big meaty shrimp, with a truly light batter which enhanced and never overpowered the shrimp. That being the case, what was wrong with the onion rings? Those, the batter did overpower the onion inside, and the onion itself was frequently stringy (from the part of the onion that's starting to turn into the skin). But the crab cake and shrimp were good enough to ignore that. read more

If you've never tried REAL Cajun food, you've got to come to Shucks. Smack in the middle of Vermillion Parish, this gem is talked about for miles around. We were referred by folks two towns away. I struggle to find words to describe how good the food is here; it's far worth the trip from I-10. From the multiple varieties of oyster-on-the-half shell recipes which are all incredible, to the shrimp etoufee this place has some amazing dishes. How important is a warm welcome to you? If very, don't bother with Shucks. The small, brunette hostess/cashier was deeply involved in conversation with her boyfriend. Once we were finally shown to our table, she simply turned and walked away. Bad start. The two dozen oysters we ordered were fresh and delicious. The seafood gumbo was okay but thin. Crab cake and shrimp poboy were both flavorful and decent portions. If I were in Abbeville, I would consider another try, but I would not make the drive from Lafayette again for Shucks. read more

It's hard to sum up all the good attributes this restaurant has to offer. The food, service, and the cold draft beer were all on point. I got to sample the crawfish étouffée, fried shrimp, grilled oysters, and their Bloody Mary, all were exceptional. We were passing through Abbeville and on a whim stopped at Shucks. It was DELICIOUS! We had gator bites, sassy shrimp, shrimp cocktail, and gumbo - everything was perfection. But as good as the food was, the service was even better. Ms. Christie and the owner made our experience so fun. Ms. Christie was kind and helpful and patient with our four children. But the cherry on top was their delicious chocolate cake, we had to stop ourselves from licking the plate! Today was our 4th time eating at Shucks and we were disappointed. My husband ordered the "strips" on the menu and my dad ordered the catfish which includes a $7 up charge for the catfish. This was not a problem as we don't mind paying an up charge for good food. Big disappointment. The catfish my dad ordered was so incredibly spicy that he could not eat it. It is obvious it was soaked in a lot of hot sauce and highly seasoned. The fish had a red color from all of the seasoning. We called our waitress over to discuss it. She was very nice about taking it back and my dad asked her to send him some of the strips my husband had thinking it was catfish. She informed us the strips are not catfish. When I asked what type of fish it was, she was hesitant at first but finally told us it was "Swai" fish. We were all shocked and disappointed that a Cajun seafood restaurant this close to the water is selling Swai. I am assuming that's why they don't clarify in their menu what kind of fish the "strips" are and why they upcharge $7 for USDA catfish. There are plenty of other restaurants who serve catfish instead of foreign frozen fish to try. We won't be back. It just comes across as you are hiding something when you don't let people know what they are eating and paying for. You should be supporting your local fisherman and not buying Swai fish from overseas. You expect to eat that kind of fish when you go to other countries and not from a local restaurant so close to the Gulf. read more

Spent a week traveling through LA and Shucks was hands-down the best meal we had! I had the Catfish Atchafayla, which is a lightly fried catfish fillet served on a bed of rice and topped with crawfish etouffee. Husband had the pick two platter with a crab cake and fried shrimp. Being from NC, I've eaten a lot of crab, but this crabcake was the absolute best I've ever had - very fresh, no filler at all! I can't say enough about the Catfish Atchafayla - just order it! Both meals came with a house salad. I tried their house cane vinaigrette, which was good. Husband had the house remoulade dressing, also a good choice. At the end of our meal, our waitress insisted on bringing us each "a taste" of their bread pudding. Neither of us like bread pudding, but didn't have the heart to tell her. I will say, based on the taste she gave us, I would consider ordering their bread pudding for dessert - if I had room left after the amazing entree! Hot, sweet, and creamy! This is the best of the best! I ordered a bottle of premium Pinot Grigio, 1 dozen oysters on the half shell, gator bites & the Louisiana crab cake with crawfish etoufee on top. The oysters were fresh & the horse radish was very freshly grated, the wine was brought to the table in a ice bucket, perfectly chilled and tasted delicious with the seafood we ordered, the gator bites were tender and the dipping sauce was delicious, and the crab cake was all crab topped with deliciously cooked crawfish and the salad that came with it I ordered blue cheese dressing and the chunks of blue cheese were amazing! It was like food I would get at a fine restaurant in NYC but now I live in Abbeville and am so happy to live near such a fine establishment with amazing food and such accommodating servers. I go to Louisiana at least once a year to visit family and they are all in the restaurant business. They live in Iberia Parish and this is the only place they go for oysters. I love it. I know there are different types and flavor profiles of different oysters, but I'm not an oyster snob in fact I'm an oyster whore and these are huge even in the off season (the months that don't have r in it). They call their po' boys "loaves" here.The oyster loaf and fried shrimp loaf are fried perfectly and are delicious. The gator bites are different from what I'm used to but they are fried and a little chewy but very good with a little hot sauce. Oh and don't forget the gumbo that's peppery spicy and has sausage and lots of nice fresh seafood and white rice. I look forward to it every time. read more

My family has been going to Shucks for over 20 years. This is THE place for oysters in the area...hands down. During a recent visit home, we had an oyster blowout at Shucks like no other. Raw oysters, candied oysters, roughneck oysters (these were new and DELISH - charbroiled w/ cream cheese, jalapenos, and bacon!), seafood gumbo (simply the best), and fried oysters...my head is still spinning from the greatness of that meal. I am an oyster fiend, and their fried oysters just cannot be beat! We finished our meal with the bread pudding (they can split it for you in the back b/c it's a BIG portion), and I suggest you get that too. The owner may be the friendliest person ever and stopped by to ensure we were having a wonderful meal. He said the bread pudding is a 60+ year old recipe...it was perfect! Hey all... We are foodies from Chicago that have used yelp for years to track down great restaurants away and occasionally at home. This is the first time that we have been so blown away that we were motivated to write our first review. This. is. incredible Cajun food. The absolutely best oysters we have ever eaten. Not just raw on the half-shell, but in every way beyond imagine taking advantage of the incredible depth of flavor from a large fresh oyster. Candied, char-broiled, 'supreme', 'shuck-afella', the list goes on and is kinda cheesy, but the flavors are all incredibly complex, balanced, and fresh Cajun from a local family that has been here for a hundred years or more and didn't start speaking english until the current generation. The pan-fried oysters taste like what escargot has always wanted to be, and combined with steak... OMG By the way, it's not all about the oysters... The staff was friendly and we were seated quickly. The seafood salad was great, the fried oysters lacked flavor and the crab cakes were filled with small crab shells. If you are coming from out of town it is not worth the drive. There are much better places along the way and Lafayette has many better selections. This place is a great place for Yummm Cajun food. I only gave them 4 stars because I wish there were items that were a little healthier..but that wouldn't be any Cajun dish known to man!
