Finally made it back after such a long time! I grabbed some cupcakes for a clients work event, and had perfectly enough for my five clients plus me to celebrate a 70th birthday. Our girls had such a fun week at Shugar Shack's bakery camp in Huntington Beach. Since the class takes place inside a working bakery, they not only created some amazing desserts but also got to watch the bakers in action and see how they connected with customers. One of the best tips they picked up? Pouring heavy cream over brioche cinnamon rolls before baking. It was decadent and delicious. I'd never been to Shugar Shack before, but it's a hidden gem tucked inside the Huntington Harbor Trader Joe's center. Before we left, we had their tiramisu, which was delightful. I found Shugar Shack thru the "too good to go" app, I reserved my "surprise bag" and came to pick it up. When I first arrived, I wasn't greeted (ok no big deal the worker was helping someone else already) I even considered leaving at one point but I thought to myself I already paid for my order so I just told myself to wait to get it. So I started to browse their selection. Then I realized it was gonna take a while bc the customer had bought a few things plus drinks so while the worker was making the drinks and preparing her order I went to use the restroom. When I got out, the worker was still helping the customer (at this point still no acknowledgment) okay whatever still no big deal bc she's busy. Then when the customer left, it was my turn and I told the worker I was there for my surprise bag. She then prepares my bag and hands it to me. I went home and saw I got 4 cupcakes for $6 (before taxes). Unfortunately the two cupcakes with the little cake sponge on top were dry. However the two in the back (vanilla) were really good. Horrible customer service, entered establishment and met with bad attitude. Was recommended this place while waiting for my car at a nearby car wash. As I walked in, nobody was at the counter. There was a woman seated at the table who had a cake in her hand. Didn't great me, I asked her if she worked there as I headed to the restroom. She told me in a rude tone the bathroom is only for customers, I said ok and proceeded to restroom. She then asked me if I was gonna buy something. I said yes. She then stated if you're not you can go to the bar next door and use the restroom. After that I said you know what I changed my mind, I'm not going to buy something. Explained I wanted to use restroom before I ordered, turned around and left. Didn't use the restroom, didn't get to try anything. I mean I'm not dressed like I'm homeless. Maybe I'm too ethnic looking. Per reply from Shirley. I walked in to do business in good faith. You obviously made me uncomfortable and feel some sort of way. Ethnic can make other ethnics feel the way you made me feel. Fact is as a business owner, you lost a sale & potential regular customer. Was going to Red Table and Trader Joes and noticed this bakery. After we finished grocery shopping my wife and I stopped in to check it out. My wife who can't eat sugar was happily surprised they had a fairly large selection of sugar free cupcakes and cookies. They can also custom make cakes sugar free. Employee was super nice and happy to answer any questions. As a sugar eating glutton I got two cupcakes and a cookie. I went with chocolate Nutella cupcake since the employee said it was his favorite, a strawberry and cream cupcake, and a decorated for Easter sugar cookie. My wife got a sugar free carrot cake cupcake, another sugar free I don't recall the flavor, and some sugar free cookies. Prices were on the high side but they had nice artistry and the take-out packaging was great to keep the cupcakes intact while you drove home. One thing I really liked is the desserts were not overly sweet. Some places overkill the sweetness factor to the point you feel sick after eating them. Here it's much lighter. Everything tasted fresh and we both enjoyed our treats. The sugar cookie was awesome and reminded me of those cookie basket cookies from years ago. Some people might complain about the price, but again, baking takes time, good quality ingredients for baking are expensive as well.
