When I am in this area, I sometimes stop to get a pastry or two. I like that they bake their own goods. The supermarkets equivalents I don't even buy because of all the overuse of artificial colors and ingredients, preservatives, etc. I've tried many of the pastries in the many years I've been here. My biggest complaint is that they use way too much sugar . That being said, my favorite two items in years past are no longer made. The strawberry cake - with gobs of whipped cream frosting, fresh strawberries. and glaze (yes, the glaze has artificial red coloring) was simple and available all year. It was my favorite cheat dessert. Now it's gone. The other item I really liked were the German cookies - hamantaschen. But they're both just a memory. I've had the large wagon wheels with the different toppings and they're more just sweet more than flavorful. What I like are the lemon blueberry pound cakes - moist and not overly sweet. Pastries are $3.75 as I write this. The bear claws have great almond paste inside a sweet pastry. The blueberry muffins I've had have blueberries in every bite. A sugar bomb with fiber is their honey bran muffin. Their mixed fruit tart to me is disappointing, despite beautiful presentation but again more sweet than tasty. The last one had more canned fruit pieces than fresh fruit. The carrot cupcake is good but - like all cupcakes - are pricey (I think $6). For the same price you can get a quarter carrot sheet cake at Trader Joes. (Actually my home made carrot cake is better than both). I did enjoy their sourdough bread. They also sell brewed coffee though it's not flavorful either and sometimes bitter or warm instead of hot but cheaper than Starbucks across the way. They do make good and beautiful cakes though I've only order one many years ago. Last, their pies - I've had apple - and the filling was for me and my guests too sweet. Service is good, though they don't have a typical checkout. There's a fee to use a credit or debit card. They use an adding machine to total your purchase, and they walk to the one register for change. Still, Am glad they are still around. Through the years my wife has had several cakes from French's and they have all been delicious.The staff is always friendly, helpful and accommodating. For her 60th she asked them to create a rosette covered cake in pastels. She showed them the color pallet from her decorations and they created the most perfect birthday cake! Love this place ! The desserts are wonderful ! In French, "Les desserts sont merveilleux !" We purchased carrot cake & it was divine. We also purchased German chocolate cake, and French bread. My favorite by far is the carrot cake. Usually I have some constructive feedback, but when it's done perfectly like this, perfect recipe. Furthermore, each day, for the past three days I ate some, and it was just as delicious as day one. Additionally, the French Bread was crispy, on the outside and deliciously soft inside. I was next door to French's Bakery and decided to pop in and pick something up for Valentine's Day. I hadn't been to this bakery in years. The baked items I purchased were "okay" but not great as I had hoped. The staff are not very friendly so that was a turn off. But the main reason I won't go back is that they charged me the 3% fee for using my credit card and did not inform me that would be the case. What happened to the days where the fee was part of doing business instead of passing it onto your customers? read more

I have been coming to this bakery on and off for about seven years. The quality is hit or missed depending on what you order. Sometimes they have bread that is a day or two or three old. Most bakeries don't keep bread this long. I've had to return a few items because they weren't fresh. This week I bought a cranberry scone, which turned out to have only 2 cranberries. I've never really enjoyed the flavor of their scones. There's something wrong. I also bought some cookies which they charge top dollar for and they are close to the worst of any bakery cookies I've purchased. The business is convenient for me. I just keep hoping that they will get better but hasn't happened yet. It's too bad - I'm not sure how they stay in business. read more

This has quickly grown to be one of my favorite bakeries ... I bake myself so I don't give out this compliment lightly. The cakes are absolutely delicious. And I love that they give you a variety of cake flavors and fillings to choose from. There is also a wide variety of already made cakes, cupcakes and other treats to choose from. If you are a fan of beautifully decorated cakes that don't use fondant, this is your place!!. I absolutely love the flower work on the cakes. Simply impeccable every time. The staff is always so courteous and patient and helpful. This is the only place that I get my mom's birthday cake from. The lemon cake, The cream cheese frosting is to die for. Let's not forget about $1 cupcake Tuesdays. It's my favorite day of the week and you cannot beat that bargain. If you want a custom cake be sure to submit the order at least one week in advance. I'm really a cupcake and cake fan, but those cheese danishes and those butter/ sugar cookies deserve an honorable mention. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything from this bakery. I made an error in emailing the wrong location to begin with but it turned out to be the location I needed. I had such a lovely experience here. First and foremost, this bakery is so cute decor + interior-wise and in my opinion, one of the best! I was so so sad when they closed down the one closest to me. I truly appreciate how accommodating they were. I left my wallet and only had apple pay available, which they could not accept. However, they were able to take the card details instead of the physical card which was so so helpful for me! I also came for a last-minute birthday cake and choosing this bakery was the best decision. They had a variety of cakes ready to go which was great. I was helping my elderly client host a Christmas party and purchased two key lime pies from this Bakery. I noticed they had great reviews and I needed a place close by where my client lived so I decided to give French's Bakery a try and boy am I glad I did. I have never been a fan of key lime pie myself but I did take a bite and now I am in love with key lime pie all of a sudden. I'm not sure what was wrong with the other pies I've tried in the past but this one was almost souffle like in texture and the crust was light and perfectly toasted. I can't get over how good this pie tasted and actually just had a slice for breakfast which inspired me to write up this review. The price compared to value is excellent. Worth Every bite read more

Until 2/27 never had I had a terrible cake. I had asked the gal what cake was under the strawberry, she said white cake with strawberry frosting. I asked on multiple cakes before making decision . not one concern since every cake over the years has had many compliments this was not white cake, it was angel food cake , I would not have chosen if I knew that, the cake was mush with frosting, it was a birthday cake disaster. Even the birthday person took couple bites and threw the rest away. No one ate a slice more than half the cake was thrown away. it was a moist, mush angel food cake with frosting Heads up to others to ask when white cake is under frosting, ask more to not have a mush disappointed. I wanted to live in that cake!! Service has been great each time I've gone! Overall store is cute - appreciate the open doors but sometimes a few more flies/gnats get in than should be in a store - however if I was a fly/gnat I would definitely go here as well :) Maybe adding in a light windscreen would help. read more

We were looking for a local bakery where we could place an order for a small carrot cake. The first place I called near my house wanted to charge us $55 for a 6 inch cake. French's was my second call and their price was so low I thought there might be a mistake. On the day I went in to pick up the cake I also purchased two dozen cookies (they're on sale after 10am) and the 6 inch carrot cake and two dozen cookies came out to less than half the price of what the first bakery I had called quoted me for just the cake. The cake was tasty and had carrot pieces and cream cheese frosting. It was perfect. The cookies were delicious too. I think I'll be stopping in here way more often! read more

Cute bakery in Costa Mesa! I had a Groupon for this location and was excited to use it for my first visit here. The bakery has a large selection of baked goods, cupcakes, cookies, danishes, and even cakes. Very clean and open so you can see everything and have a pleasant experience. We got a strawberry mousse layer cake for a birthday party and it fed about 16 people very nicely. The cake had a clear plastic film all around that kept it together during transport, such a nice detail that impressed me. They even wrote a message on the cake. The cake was delicious and not very sweet. The mousse layer was thick and creamy. There was a strawberry jelly mixed in that to me had an overly artificial taste. I think if they took that out, this would be a very excellent cake. We also got some danishes and cookies. The danishes were very nicely sized for the price and very good. Not stale and tasted fresh. The walnut cookies reminded me of pecan meltaways. Am excited to come back and try the other items! read more

How sad is that you treat you customers so poorly, telling them is not a swap meet and calling a client "pendeja", you need to be clear with your prices and explain why the suddenly increased. I bought a rosca de Reyes there a while ago it was the most disgusting thing I ever ate, the flavors were full of artificial flavors, the bread was super dry, on top of that super expensive, I had to put it in the garbage after the next day because the bread was hard as a rock. Sadly you think your Mexican or Spanish speaking clients don't bring business to your business, but yes they do, treat them with respect because they will respect you more if you are immigrant because we are in the same page. read more
