Sushi is great and fresh, restaurant is always busy! Robust menu options for everyone

This heir to the long-lost Shujiro on Lee Rd. is probably still the best Japanese food in the Cleveland area. Strictly-fresh fish at the sushi bar and excellent grilled food and noodles from the kitchen. I especially like their dashi, the base for the miso soup and tempura sauce--not every restaurant still makes their own dashi, but Shuhei does. Service has always been swift and friendly. Shuhei is pretty easy to get to from most of the Cleveland area, being on Chagrin Blvd. not far from I-280. Parking is easy in the lot behind the building, although the entry to the lot is a bit odd, as you have to circle the front of the building and drive down a hill. All told, glad that Shuhei is still around after more than 20 years. read more

This place was really hard to find. It's in the basement BEHIND another building with a one way in and a different road out. They have a really long, big menu that was pretty hard to choose from. The taste of everything was pretty good but the portions were smaller than expected. Prices were on the higher side. The servers were dressed in kimonos as promised though. read more

Been coming here for years - always a delicious treat. Age dashi tofu is the best in the city. Love the appetizers Gyoza and Negimaki - beef is tender and delicious. Always enjoy their sushi too. Service is always on point. read more

After many years' experiences at Shuhei I have to say they are off their game. As a host of a party of six I was disappointed in lackluster service, mediocre sushi and uninspired ramen. It was early in a Friday service so I don't think the kitchen or sushi counter was slammed. I'm left just sad and looking elsewhere for my next fix read more

Everything was INCREDIBLE. Service from Alaina was great. The food was hot and fast and the drinks were strong and creative!

Ok, where do I begin..? The Food Sucked! The rolls that with Tempura were cold and the Spider Maki tasted Old. The spicy tuna was very small. Service was good & the atmosphere was fine, but both of those go out the window when the food is leagues away from the quality I recalled from years ago. They have always had a great reputation from the days of being a Premier Sushi restaurant for our City. We left without finishing our meals and had to go elsewhere to forget the whole event. I think the owner needs to make it his/her mission to at least try to be the Best once again.. Until then, I do not recommend to eat there. Ordered chefs selection and a few different sashimi rolls. The fish was very fresh and I enjoyed it, but the chef nigiri selection was pretty tame as this restaurant seems to cater to easier palates. My selection had 2 tuna, a big tamago, 1 ebi, 1 salmon, 1 surf clam, 1 flounder, and it came with 12 rolls of tuna and crab/avocado (basically what others have posted pictures of). The miso soup was homemade and really good and came with fresh ginger salad. If you're looking for great tasting, basic sushi, this place is it. read more

This place is in a dark, dirty basement of a run-down old office building. It is crowded, the tables too close together; the servers are stressed and unaccommodating; a manager stands and stares at everyone, not working. The men making sushi didn't acknowledge us as we walked in, which is a sign it's at least not authentic. Never found out if it was fresh or tasted any good, got out as soon as possible. No idea why it should have good reviews, or be listed in Cleveland magazine. read more

I cannot believe that I haven't reviewed Shuhei Japanese Cuisine and Sushi Bar yet, so here it is. Shuhei is located at 23360 Chagrin Blvd, close to Green Road in Beachwood. The restaurant is in the back of a set of a small colonial style office building. There is a small sign out front and plenty of parking in the back. The entrance is under the awning Once you enter the restaurant it is a different story. The decor is periodically updated with plenty of Japanese prints, sculptures and other art. The overall feeling is of modern Japanese style. The dark tables and chairs present a nice background for the simple table settings and the wonderful food. The servers wear traditional Japanese clothing, with the waitresses in kimonos and the men in "happy jackets". Shuhei has an experienced and knowledgeable wait staff that do a great job of taking care of their customers. The food, well that is hard to beat. The ingredients are of incredibly high quality and are carefully prepared, the sauces made from scratch. For the most part food preparation and presentation stays close to the traditional Japanese style, which is a good thing when it is done as expertly as this. Lets start at the sushi bar where the highly skilled sushi chefs combine the freshest fish and seafood with rice, seaweed and other vegetables to make the best sushi in the area. Whether you order a simple maki roll up to the large assorted sushi and sashimi platters, presentation is carefully considered and the plates are works of art. One of the tests of a good sushi bar is how they do on the simple straight forward nigiri sushi, where the fish is presented on top of a rice pellet. At Shuhei the freshness of the fish along with the skill of the chef shines through, the fish melts in your mouth with a nice contrast from the lightly vinegared rice and the wasabi. Some of my favorites and suggestions to try are the scallop sushi, large fresh scallops served raw allow you to experience the slightly sweet taste and the wonderful texture; the spider roll, taking a perfectly fried soft shell crab and rolling it with lettuce and slightly spicey mayo for a great flavor combination; and the Nippon Kai Salad, an assortment of raw fish and seafood cut up into smaller pieces and served over a light vegetable salad with special miso flavored dressing that allows you to try a wide variety in an appetizer. You cannot go wrong with any of the sushi dinners, but if you want something a bit different try the Chirashi dinner. Instead of individual pieces of sushi, you will get a very nice assortment of fish and seafood on top of a bed of the sushi rice. The rest of the menu is perfectly prepared Japanese food presented simply, but elegantly. Japanese cooking tends to emphasize simple flavors using the freshest foods available. It is hard to go wrong with anything on the menu, but once again some of my favorites. The tempura at Shuhei is how I think tempura should be. Shrimp and vegetables are battered and then deep fried in such a way as to result in an incredibly light and flavorful, but cruchy outside with the inside being perfectly cooked; you cannot go wrong with any of the tempura items. The fish dishes are all incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked and then mated with an appropriate sauce. The hot pot meals come out in a large iron pot steaming hot and loaded to the brim with goodness. The salad entrees and noodle dishes are outstanding, especially as a lunch. While ramen has become a recent food trend, but Shuhei has been preparing an excellent version for over a decade. A bowl of noodle with a slightly spicy broth is topped with shrimp or beef and stir fried vegetables. If something on the menu sounds good, give it a try since it should exceed your expectations. Shuhei is certainly not the cheapest restaurant in town and with the number of Japanese restaurants that continue to open in the area there are a lot of choices, but Shuhei shows that value comes from excellent food expertly prepared and served in a well designed restaurant. The food, service and ambience are all top notch and there is a reason that Shuhei has remained one of Cleveland's top restaurants. read more

The staff was nice, the dining room was clean and the interior is nicely decorated. The calamari was tough and the portion sizes were extremely small for the sushi. In fact, these were the smallest portions of sushi I have ever seen for a California roll. We will be trying to find other sushi restaurants to try before returning to Shuhei. read more

This has been one of our all time favorite restaurants over the 20 years we've lived in Cleveland. The staff has always been courteous, attentive, and welcoming, the service impeccable, and the food delicious. The sushi is routinely excellent, and the chef will tell you what is best and freshest, but their prepared dishes are wonderful as well: Tempura includes choices including shrimp and scampi, appetizers of prepared fish, sashimi, or vegetarian options abound, and soba dishes are a family favorite. They offer a full cocktail service, beer, and a wide selection of hot and cold Dai gingo sakes. Always 5 stars in our book! A very disappointing visit last night 4/29. First of all waitresses and other staff are still wearing masks and the front door still has a paper form 2020 about Ohio health order for Covid. I have not seen this in any other restaurants so someone is very obsessed with Covid here. It is 2023 and it's time to stop masking. We don't want to go eat somewhere and not be able to see faces of people serving us. The food was not very good and the waitress was not very friendly. She did not like that we needed more time to look through their menu. Sushi rolls 6 piece were so small that there was practically no fish. Could not taste spicy tune a table. The prices are tripled, 9$ for small toll and 17$ for a bigger roll however it barely had any fish in it. Chicken teriyaki for 27$ had barely any chicken. It was filled with mushrooms, carrots and green beans. The quality has gone down since we have been there many years ago. I would not recommend this place to anyone and that is unfortunate because it used to be very good. Pacific East on Coventry has way better sushi. I can't believe that people are giving them 5 stars and such good reviews. What's shame, such a good place has become so terrible. They just care about making it lonely and not giving good food. read more

I have been here quite often and never had any complaint even though food is not as good. I liked the environment anyway. Just last time I was with a black friend. After I knew we were about to be seated in a table area, I asked to sit in the booth because we have something to discuss. The owner told me with higher tongue " no? Second sushi restaurant we tried this weekend. The first was Ginko and it was an overpriced disaster. Luckily, Shuhei was a wonderful restaurant with excellent food. My wife had tempura udon and loved it. I had them chef omakase. Both were an excellent value. The waitress made us feel welcome and invited. What a dramatic difference from Ginko where the sushi was overpriced, the trendy bar was uninviting and the dark underground quarters felt like a coach seat on Spirit Airlines. Shuhei had great lighting, fast sushi chefs, nice portions and attentive staff. We enjoyed a great meal for two with extras to take with us for less than the price of the skimpy appetizers and rolls at Ginko. Only suggestion, and it prevented awarding five stars, is the sushi omakase was not as adventuresome as my taste would have liked. It stuck to fish that beginner sushi eaters would find safe such as yellowfin tuna, salmon and tamago. For a true chef's choice, I would have eagerly welcomed aji, eel, flounder, amberjack and ikura as part of a more sophisticated or advanced sushi selection. We will try this warm and welcoming restaurant on a future visit to Cleveland. I hope the management accepts my suggestions to improve the omakase selection for passionate sushi devotees. read more

Shuhei is a great pick for sushi in the Cleveland area. The fish seems very fresh and there's a fun variety of roll options. I really like the Crab Salad Futomaki and their tempura dinners are my go-to orders. They can get busy so I recommend knowing your order and being prepared when they open to call if you are placing a takeout order Getting into the restaurant for the first time can be a little confusing as they are in the back of a building, but once you get to the back parking lot there are several signs to guide your way. read more

I've been coming to this place with my family for years. By now they all know us but the service is always great. I really like that they give you hot towels to wash your hands before you eat. Al of their sushi is always good. Sometimes it's best to make reservations but sometimes, like on a Sunday evening, there's no need for a reservation. They do carry out as well. TL;DR - great quality, great service, enjoyable atmosphere It starts off in kind of a neat way, because it isn't visible from the road, there's a sign, but it's quite unassuming. You drive around to the back of an office building and sure enough you'll find it. You walk in and are greeted by a much more authentic sushi atmosphere than I was expecting from outside. Went on a Monday night, it was pretty busy but we were seated right away. Our hostess was very friendly and gave us some great recommendations. Ordered a couple (small-ish) bottles of sake, an appetizer, some nigiri and a few rolls to split. The crunchy shrimp tempura appetizer came out quickly, it was hot and delicious! The sushi was pretty dang good too. My favorite was definitely the crunchy spicy tuna roll. The tuna nigiri was pretty pitiful, thin and not as flavorful as I've had other places. Unagi and tako were very good. My biggest gripe, and lots of sushi places seem to do this in Cleveland, is using JUST krab stick in their rolls, instead of making it into a krab salad beforehand. Makes such a huge difference in taste and it just comes off as lazy when it is omitted. read more

For starters i didnt come here for sushi i came here for friends and to socialize. I didnt order any sushi but i did order the spicy calamari and the gyoza. The gyoza was so juice and tender with every bite gently oozing juices of flavor. It was paired with some pretty unique dipping sauce that was a bit spicy all while being delicious. Im seperasting this section because it deserves a spot of its own. The Fried Calamari... CALAMARI CALAMARI CALAMARI. Im gonna be up front here i tried the sushi here and wasnt impressed at all. Its mediocre in terms of sushi quality. On top of that it was some of the most expensive sushi i have ever had, but let me tell you about the calamari!!! CALAMARI!!! It was hands down the best fried calamari i have had in yearz. The breading was perfect the sauce was perfect. The texture???? PERFECT!. The sauce tasted similar to the sauce you would get on Korean Fried Chicken which is something im obsessive over. I even stop dipping my gyoza in Its sauce and used the calamari sauce. If i ever end up here at this location again it will be to devour their squid and the sauce that comes with it. read more

I tried the David's special, 4.5 and fresh salmon wrap. All 3 where bad. Fish didn't seem very fresh and the rice amount was alot! Seaweed and the other ingredients were very gummy and chewy. The ginger salad was just ok. I did love how the placed looked. Going in it almost felt like I might needed a code word. The people there were very nice as well. Our office ordered a very large to go order, about 15 different rolls 3 apps a meal a salad and 4 soups. The woman taking the order of the phone was very lovely and put up with our mishaps of quick order edits and was able to keep it all straight and repeated it back to us twice and gave recommendations and asked if we would need extra sauces, silverware, etc. walking in for pick up the mood was very chill and quiet and seemed like a great place to dine in and eat. The gentleman checking me out then offered to help me carry our order to my car and was sure to carry the majority of it and that it was placed correctly in my car so it would not slide. besides personal preferences of foods and people trying new things they did not like, everyone loved the food and thought it was excellent and freshly prepared. I should add we were also told it would take about an hour and I got there at 45 minutes and it was ready to go.! Perfect timing! read more
