Becareful when paying for your food here, they cheat people. Today my husband went to pick up lunch and the guy put the money in his pocket and came back with the bag of food without his change. He played stupid and my husband had to explain how much he gave him and how much change to give him back. He was like ooo I sorry...hmm. And forgot a part of the order... Other than a few items not being available today, my lunch was very nice. For those of us that don't like our rolls drenched in sauces, Shu's has several rolls that accommodate that preference. I believe I tasted chili oil in their spicy rolls (I had the crab) so the heat profile is more defined and it balanced well with the sweetness of the crab. The nigiri were rather large cuts of fish, easily over 1 oz. of fish, which was very surprising. The fish was still very cold when served, so I could not accurately describe quality of the nigiri outside of visual signs of freshness (which all of my served dishes were visually fresh), but the fish and crab within my rolls all tasted fresh, so I'm sure the nigiri was as well. My rating is probably closer to a 4.5, but we live in a whole number world on Yelp. And Im not rounding down on a meal that I enjoyed. While Im in the area Shu's will be a place I return to. read more

We found this place based on Yelp reviews. My friend and I had never been here, and did not know what to expect. Very happy we had dinner here! The sushi menu is extensive, and have a LOT of local favorites and unique custom sushi creations. Everything was freshly prepared and very tasty. We had a bottle of very reasonably priced wine. Still my number one place to go for sushi. I met my friend and her husband here for a double date on a Friday evening. The sushi here is always fresh and delicious. I love the creativity of the specialty rolls. I usually rate this place as a five, but service was not the best on this Friday night. It was difficult to get our server's attention when she did appear from the back. It was a very busy night, but still you need to come to your tables and check on customers. Ex-server here talking. Our friends ordered the grilled calamari appetizer, the OMG and the devil's candy roll. I loved both the grilled calamari and the OMG, but the devils candy was a little too hot for me. I loved trying new items from the menu that my friends suggested. Of course, I ordered Kong sushi island because that is my absolute favorite roll. I love the flavor and that it's made with black rice. We also tried a couple mochi, chocolate and green tea, at the end of the meal. My friends never had mochi before, so it was fun to introduce them to something new. The green tea mochi was the standout over the chocolate. I highly recommend Shu's for it's fresh and creative sushi dishes. I do not have high expectations for sushi: historically it is a food for common people. But when sushi rice is made without the basics - salt, sugar, vinegar - it not only does not taste like sushi, it technically is not sushi. This must be the third or fourth time we've been here, and nothing stood out the last times we went. It might be a one-off, the result of some kind of mistake. I hope. But to the owner: Make sure you're not serving just plain white rice in the sushi. We just won't be back unless we know we're actually getting sushi rice, since the result is bland and not tasty otherwise. That little bit of salt, sugar and vinegar is soooo important. read more

Found this place on a whim and I didn't even get a chance to read any reviews before coming here, which made me a little nervous. It actually ended up being a very pleasant visit. Prices are reasonable, was very happy with our choices, and we had a great waiter. His name is Brock. We will request him again when we come back. We ordered the edamame, which is free with check in on Yelp, OMG, Godzilla, Kiss of Fire, and Ocean Drive. Brock actually suggested Ocean Drive because we couldn't decide on a 4th roll, which ended up being my boyfriend's favorite so thank you for that suggestion! Quite surprised at how great the sushi is here. I guess because it's in the middle of Illinois and not near any water. LOL The nigiri and sashimi are really fresh. So fresh, the meat literally melts in your mouth. I'm also a huge fan of crispy rice, which many sushi places don't do. Theirs is done with spicy tuna, which is an amazing combo! I must say, I was disappointed after such great reviews. We ordered takeout from Shu's over the weekend and it was mediocre at best. My husband and I each ordered 2 rolls. We asked them to box them separately because of his allergy but they put everything in one container. He did have a reaction that night but we can't say for certain it was from that. I did not like the spicy crab or shrimp tempura rolls that I got. The rolls were so big and had the seaweed wrapped on the outside, so much that overpowered any other flavor. I did not enjoy it at all. We also got the shrimp udon noodles which tasted good, but they don't devein the shrimp which I find odd. For me, seeing the vein is unappetizing. This was a relatively small, modern, wonderful sushi bar I enjoyed with visiting family tonight. Nobody left disappointed and we decided that we would make this a regular place to go every time they visit. Service was exactly as needed and the food was amazing. I had the sake don, which is slices of amazingly good salmon with a ball of sushi rice. I tried the tekka don (tuna) my wife ordered and a smattering of other dishes (both sushi and cooked) ordered by the family. Nobody was disappointed and everybody was happy. We all decided that this was a special occasion and had dessert. Several of us had mochi ice cream, a few of the lemon sorbets were ordered, and my nephew had the fried bananas. They were all very, very good. The red bean mochi was a little over-thawed (they cut it into a beautiful presentation so they had to thaw it for that) but it was still delicious. What a wonderful lunch, thank you! Tried Shu's for lunch today and it was really nice. Look at the picture. So many lovely colors and textures. Crunchy salad greens with a really good dressing (I might have slurped up the leftover dressing after eating the salad!). Salad was the standard iceberg with some more colorful lettuce added in. A garnish of shredded carrot and I believe beet was a pretty addition of crunch and color. I don't know what makes a good miso soup but I enjoyed this one. It warmed me up after sitting in an over air conditioned office all morning. Tasted pretty good too! The sushi rolls were very nice. The tempura shrimp roll had a lovely bit of crunch and the Cali roll was just a nice Cali roll. Everything was packaged nicely; a very clean presentation in your basic carry out containers. I love going out for sushi, grazing and taking our time studying the menu and adding more rolls to our menu while sipping a glass of wine. However, not every restaurant has outdoor dining or open dining at this time, and our time studying the menu is instead online! We had a taste for sushi and wanted to try somewhere different than our normal line-up. We browsed a few places, and weren't really captivated by what we found. Enter: Shu's. Not only were we captivated but we had such a hard time choosing what to order!! The menu is large and their rolls rank from traditional to completely inventive. We chose a few of each to get a good idea of what their specialty was. The verdict? ALL OF IT. I usually order a California Roll at every new sushi place. It's like my "spaghetti and meatballs" of sushi restaurants. Hands down, the best California Roll I've had yet. Very fresh, perfect ratio of ingredients. Hubs is a huge Chicago Cubs fan so he was drawn to that roll - it was very different, with guac and an entire shrimp on top! Impressive and delicious. The Godzilla was mouthwatering. We also had the Filo Dough Shrimp appetizer, which was very good. Lastly: I'm a huge ginger dressing fan, so ordered a side salad - SO good! Normally I give this place 4 stars, not today... Even though this is COVID-19, the things that remain in restaurant's control are service and food quality. Calling ahead, the hostess was nice & accommodating. The salmon roe nigiri was not remotely fresh-dull in color and tasting warm. This was the was the case for the super white tuna, not fresh and warm feeling the touch. Our server was not attentive, more concerned with making small talk with the regular situated at the bar. Some businesses just aren't going to make it and it's just not because of Covid-19. Small businesses have a chance to make it through with some creativity and innovation, but they can't afford to blow it on basics like food quality and service. Shu's in Oswego, fairly large restaurant off of RT.71. I saw that they had my favorite appetizer "hamachi kama", I ordered a sashimi dish and a couple of house rolls. I have to admit, this order sounded small but I can confirm that this is a lot of food. I had to take a few pieces home. In the rolls, I ordered the Kong - made with black rice - it was different but tasty. Sashimi was good, thick slices and fresh. The only thing negative was the hamachi kama, it was broiled and the meat was not dry but the skin was underdone, I had to ask to bring back to the kitchen for them to re-sear the skin. Place is super cute, good cocktails on the menu (had a cucumber martini and it was delish), soups, and salads were great. Now, I like sushi, but not too impressed with the rolls we got. The fish was diced up and mushy on the one instead of filets. Next time I go, and I will again, I'm going for the ramen. We'll see how it stacks up to Sushi and Noodle on 127th and 59, or strings in the city. They had some items on the menu that sound great, and I would def give them a go. Really enjoyed our evening out! Started with ahi poke tuna. Very good with large pieces of tuna and nice flavors throughout. Tried specialty rolls and a couple of "standard" rolls. Daughter prefers soy paper to seaweed so we substituted on a couple of the rolls. We all agreed the quality of the fish was quite high and flavors were spot on. Restaurant was clean and server was polite. Everyone enthusiastically greets you when you arrive and thank you when you leave. I usually only try writing good reviews but I've been a few times and really enjoyed the selections. That being said, the last time I was there we were rudely asked to leave because the restaurant was closing. I understand that employees want to go home but I've also worked in the industry and one typically doesn't ask their customers to leave unless it's much later than closing hours. We were with a small group and based on that experience I'll be going to other sushi places in the area from now on. Needless to say, I'm new to the area and this restaurant lost a potential regular customer. Just had to change the review. I wanted to give this place a second shot. I ordered and some . Amazing food and a great night out. We went with a small group for dinner. Our daughter had the steak teriyaki with rice and loved it. The rest of the table split several rolls. All the rolls were good and some were just beyond good. The Under Fire was fun to order and it comes on a plate that has a fire going. It was very tasty. The Godzilla, scary spider and California crunch were also big hits and we will definitely orderer them again. The devil's candy was fun to try and while it was good had just a little spice to it and we were hoping for a little more so it is not something that is on our must order again list. The under pressure roll and the o.m.g. roll were also good but not as good as other rolls. The staff was awesome! Our waiter made the whole time there completely enjoyable and fun. He was quick with his recomandations on rolls and drinks. The sushi chefs made each roll not only taste great but also into amazing art on a plate. Shu's Sushi is an unassuming strip mall restaurant, but let me tell you - magical things are happening inside! Yelp led my husband and I here on a date night and we had a delicious time. From the hostess to our server to the sushi chef, everyone was extremely friendly. They made us feel like they were genuinely happy to have us. They offer a nice beverage list of sake, wines, cocktails, and some beer. I was feeling fancy and wanted something I don't normally drink at home, so I went with the sake-tini. It was so good! Crisp and refreshing. It's basically a sake martini with cucumber and ice chips, but makes you feel like you're at a spa. To start our meal we had edamame (free with Yelp check-in) and miso soup, which are pretty standard choices for my husband and I. Then we ordered the ahi tuna poke, because the pictures I saw were drool worthy and anything with that much avocado and tuna I will for sure be eating. Well, it tasted as good as it looked and I highly recommend this app! As for our sushi I can't quite remember the names of the rolls we got, but they were extremely fresh and flavorful. One was definitely spicy and the other had crunch on top. Each roll was cut into 8 pieces and we finished them all. Two rolls plus our apps were the perfect amount of food for us. I mean, let's be honest, I could have eaten another one but I think then I'd be leaving stuffed instead of perfectly content. Shu's definitely wasn't empty on a Friday night, but it was pretty quiet.
