Food 3/5 - Based on the prior reviews I was excited to try something different for dinner in the town of Lewistown. I got the hamburger, which is served either pink or no pink, and comes with a side of chips (no substitutions). I like my burgers medium, but it still came out no pink. Quality of ingredients was great, but together it didn't just do anything special for me. Should have tried something a little more exotic I think. Beer 3.5/5 - Different beer styles to choose from and a 5 beer sampler is on the menu. Couple beers tasted great but the problem with any beer is by number 4 or 5 they are warm - which I don't particularly like. Would definitely give a few beers a second shot. Ambiance 4.5/5 - inside consists of tables/bar seating but the outside seating area is great. Fire pits, a stage for live music, and even tables under an overhang in case of rain. Gives off a camping feeling and would definitely be a great place to visit with a group. read more

This place is an absolute gem and not what you would expect to find in Lewisburg PA. The inside is beautiful and cozy. They have a bunch of different styles of beers to choose from. We both enjoyed a few different ones. My absolute favorite was the Jaybird NE IPA. Friendly service and a spot to hang out and stay awhile. read more

You want your non alcoholic drinks to subsist of root beer (that's supposedly brewed there but tastes a lot like mug), some "italian soda" and rich coast coffee? This place is probably for you! You know those places that "want to be"? Yup this is that place! Place that their patrons who review don't know if they're in Lewistown or Lewisberg cause they have their head crammed up their butts? You guessed it! There were like 3 things I would have liked the cheapest was $13 (not really a big deal) but I kinda knew I wasn't going to have a good time by the time I ordered since it took them 45 minutes to even bring us a menu. Now, I am really disappointed. I knew Shy Bear when they were just a bunch of homebrewers, and their beer has ALWAYS been on point. And it still appears to be that way. However...this food thing they are doing...it's not great. My partner and I both had food poisoning after eating a burger there--the only shared food we had all day. They were out of wings the only night of the week they have wings an hour after opening...the food we had was not good. We did not finish our food and just got more beer instead to be good patrons. We will go back again in the future to see if it was just a bad night.... The venue is awesome. They've got music. The service is really bad, and the way the waitresses dressed made me feel like I was at a dive bar. read more

Maybe I'm biased because I'm a local and I love craft beer - but Shy Bear has become one of my favorite places. Like, period. Not one of my favorite places to have a beer or favorite places on a Friday night. Like, it's just one of my favorite places period. I love this place to death. The beer they brew is absolutely stellar - I've never had one I didn't like - and my favorite has got to be Jaybird's Paramour. You'd think, "Okay, they're good at beer, that's good... but are they good at food?" Unequivocally, YES. The food offering at Shy Bear can appeal to all sorts of palates and dietary persuasions - from unabashed carnivores, to vegetarians and vegans, to folks just in more of a snacking mood. And they ace pretty much every last section of the menu. Their chips are homemade and downright incredible. The Shy Burger is honestly one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever had (probably because it's got a mix of chuck, brisket, and bacon in the patty!). Their menu does change seasonally, but if they have it, I highly recommend the Brew-ben - their take on a reuben, which has completely spoiled me for all other reubens. I haven't even started on the atmosphere yet. Without getting too long-winded, this is just one of the friendliest, most pleasant places I've ever been. The bar-room is pleasant and congenial, even in the dead of winter, and the whole place explodes out onto the patio and open-air porch in nice weather. The events hosted here range from live music of all varieties to movie nights to community events. The staff is so accommodating and warm, and the owner Jason will come and chat with you just to see how you're doing. Overall, I just couldn't love this place enough. We were planning on going to State College for a late lunch but after getting stuck in ridiculous construction traffic we popped a U-turn and went south, stumbling across Shy Bear and couldn't have been luckier to find this place! Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and great food. Definitely a gem and worth a stop whether you're from the area or passing through. We sat in the deck area overlooking the outdoor area and wish we could make it back for live music! Great set up! I had a flight of beer and enjoyed them all while my husband, who was starving, ordered three of the tacos because he couldn't decide. I had the burger and his favorite taco was the pork belly. Finally tried the brews and I'm a huge fan of the peach wheat and blonde. Great bar with billiard balls for each draft handle. The burger may be the best tasting patty I've ever had. Wow! Amazing! Incredible! Yes, my hyperbole can easily continue for Shy Bear Brewing. What a place! A good portion of my extended family lives in Lewistown. There are not a lot of great restaurants in Lewistown. Returning "home" to see family was always challenging for this vegan and good food/venue appreciator. That was true until my brother-in-law introduced me to Shy Bear. What a beautiful restaurant with great dining optionsj for everyone's food restrictions and preferences. I so appreciate SBB serving the Impossible Burger. For vegans it is a new go-to dining pleasure. Even my 90-year old mother-in-law loved the fish tacos. If you are ever in the State College/Mifflin County region, make a trek to Shy Bear. Now, I cannot wait to go back to PA to see my family and plan for all of our family meals around the Shy Bear dining hours. read more

Beer was pretty good. Hazy IPA was solid. Both porters were good. Brown ale was nice. The old vine Zinfandel was especially good. They have a strict no substitution policy on the food menu, which was annoying. Ordered the small fries and they are ridiculously small. The Thursday special ribs were good, but would have liked a spicier BBQ sauce and a potato or chips instead of the potato salad. Veggie burger was pretty good too. Their $10 charge for a new growler stopped me from buying one and beer. They really should reduce the price to $4-5 for the growler glass. Very nice outdoor seating area. read more

First visit and will definitely be back. Arrived early on a Saturday afternoon, plenty of seating in the patio area. Pleased to see everyone practicing good safety and social distancing. Started with a flight of four beers and wow was impressed with all that I tried. The Cookie Dipper, an oatmeal cookie cream ale, was amazing and unexpected. Left with a 4 pack of that. Had the Asian Brussel Sprouts that were delicious in a Thai glaze with roasted red peppers, yum! I finished with the Shy Burger which was good but a little over cooked to my liking. My friend orders the poutine which came out with the gravy on the bottom and cold hard cheese curds and was well disappointing. Lastly I tried the Indigo Broh, a sangria session ipa, all I can say is it was like no beer I have ever tasted, walked out with a 4 pack of that as well. Was wanting so badly to like this place. The location and layout are perfect. Outdoorsy for those who want to be outside and with a decent bar for beer knurds to peruse the taps. The beer was ok. I found one that i enjoyed - the Doppelbock - and bought a small glass. The problem I had was that the pub wasn't crowded or extremely busy for a Friday night at 9pm and yet the wait staff could barely bother to take my order or check back on me. AND I WAS SITTING AT THE BAR!!! Would have bought more had they been a little more engaged with beer knowledge for those of us who have more detailed questions. read more

Visited on Sunday with family. The outdoor seating area was great, would definitely like to spend more time out there (and bring my dog!). My wife and I ate here about two years ago and really enjoyed both the food and the beer. Decided to visit today because some friends were playing on the outside stage. Tried an IPA and a Pilsner and the IPA lacked any kind of the crispness that expect with a good craft beer. The pilsner was dull as well. Even though they rated it 32 IBU's it was very malty and I just didn't taste any real bite. Onion rings and tacos were really good but burger was . The biggest disappointment was the house sound. We've heard this band numerous times and although the instruments were mixed well the vocals and harmonies were so far back in the mix that I felt bad for the band because the audience was missing those great harmonies. I don't know if the sound guy was somehow reading this as I am writing it but 20 minutes before the end of this last set the vocals just came up. Sad that it took so long. An okay place but things just seemed off tonight. read more

This is definitely my new favorite spot in miffco to grab a beer and a bite to eat. I got the fish tacos which were delicious. I grabbed a side of Hawaiian salsa to put on it as well I tried a flight of 5 beers and wasn't dissatisfied with any of them. Right now my favorite beer for summer that they have is son of a peacheyman, it is perfect to quench your summer thirst. The atmosphere outside is quaint and a great spot to gather with friends. I've been really hesitating to write this updated review because I so badly don't want to say anything negative about this place. I go here quite a bit and the past few times I've been here have been less than impressive. There's a lot of new people in the staff, which tells me there's frequent turn-around...which tells me there's issue in management somewhere. The service is spotty; meaning..one time we'll come and the service is great, then the next time we go and we barely see our waitress at all. I also get the impression that the staff are miserable working here. Which just makes me wonder what the management is putting them through. My family and I were dining here yesterday (party of 4) and we all received and finished our food by the time my dad got his hotdogs. We watched the guy at the grill make them and he spent a solid 20-30 minutes just putting the toppings on. The hotdogs, of course, came out cold. I'm writing this hoping for positive changes. I'm really rooting for this place and want it to do well. But I feel something needs to change in management. read more

I would have never guessed to find a place like this in the middle of nowhere. We sat outside last night on the deck with the crazy rain, but they turned the heater on so it was cozy. I'm not a beer drinker, so I can't comment on their beer..I realize it's a brewery, but what I can comment on is that their hard drink menu is on point. Many times brew pubs forget that some people don't drink beer, so it was nice to see representation! Not only that, but they use local distilleries for their hard liquor, which is awesome! My boyfriend got the special, it was some sort of quesadilla and it was delicious! We also got the polish delight that used homemade pierogies! I stuck with the summer salad that had fresh berries which was actually unexpected because even though it's summer, I've definitely been places that use frozen berries in mid blueberry and raspberry season! Off of the main road, US 322 but well worth the drive. The beer is excellent. Seating inside and out side. Had Shrimp tacos and Reuben tacos. You get three served on a bamboo plate, very impressive. They are flat tacos that are warm. Taste is great. My granddaughters (9 and 11) had shrimp taco. Yes kid friendly. All sodas are home made. I.E. no Coke or Pepsi products, I was impressed. One grand daughter loved the lemonade other hated it. Has pulp. In winter may have trouble getting inside, most of it is build for outside business. Prices are reasonable. You can get three different sizes of beer which is good. It was my first time here, I will be going back. They just opened in March of 2018. This review written July 16. Only downside was too many flies inside the restaurant. Their are two doors to the outside used by customers and wait staff that allow bugs in. Restroom was very clean. read more

I've only been here twice but I have some very mixed feelings about Shy Bear. The food is great and the beer is decent, but the service has been some of the worst I've ever experienced. We haven't been out of there in less than about 3 hours each time. I don't think the facilities/kitchen are large enough to accommodate a busy night. It was more than 80 minutes between when we ordered our food and when we received it (both times!). Again, this is made slightly better by the fact that the food tastes great, but leaves me with mixed feelings overall. We shouldn't have servers other than our own giving us free 'apology beer' because they notice how bad a job our server was doing and how miserable it was making us. read more

Born and raised in Lewistown but moved away 30 years ago. Come back to visit my parents 2-3 times a year. Glad to see an establishment like this. Seems to be doing well the few times when I've been there. Menu is limited but very good. Saw a lot of Shy Burgers being served. My parents loved theirs. I had Tuna Tostadas as appetizer and Asian Fish Noodle Salad. Never thought I would see the day that something like this would be served in Lewistown. Everything was fresh and perfect heat from the spices. Loved it. Beer was very good. I frequent and prefer small local brew pubs everywhere I travel. The Jaybird IPA is excellent. Not trying to do something crazy with an IPA like so many do now. It's hoppy but not overpowering and has nice hint of citrus. Just right. As we were leaving they were getting ready to have movie night showing Goonies. Doesn't get any better than that !! I highly recommend going here.
