Another friend, Pam, had highly recommended Emma Jayne's Restaurant which is only a couple of traffic lights from Trader Joe's - a perfect location for our trip. The restaurant sits just north of Fred the Butcher (next door, literally) for those who frequent that establishment, on Route 9. There is off-street parking. When we arrived at 12:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, the front parking spaces were full. (Note: there may be parking around back; I didn't check) We thought we might have to wait for a table. Wrong! The restaurant is surprisingly spacious with two large rooms furnished with tables that were thoughtful spaced apart. A photo of an adorable young girl, whom we assumed was the dining establishment's namesake, was on the wall. Let me be sure to mention that the ladies room, which smelled faintly of bleach, was spotless. I mean REALLY clean! About the food ... my friend and I shared an appetizer of Fried Calamari. It was an ample portion (took some home) accompanied by sweet chili sauce - a nice change from typical marinara served at other places. However, the calamari was small and overcooked. As a result, what was presented was a plate of small, overly crisp rings of 90% batter. No squid! For our entrees, Barb chose the Chicken Salad Sandwich. She requested that it be served on a pretzel bun (touted as homemade) for which we were hit with an up-charge of $3.50. The chicken salad had grapes and walnuts in it and Barb liked it very much. The up-charged pretzel roll did not appear to be homemade. Very disappointing. Had she known it would be uninspiring, she would have accepted the brioche roll. Macaroni salad - not very exciting - accompanied the sandwich along with a pickle. I love seafood and was torn between ordering the Fish and Chips (halibut) and Lobster Pot Pie (an appetizer). Our server, Drew, gets a gold star for suggesting the second one when I told him I wasn't a big eater. Apparently, the halibut, while highly recommended, is a sizable portion. The pot pie was superb! The rich, creamy sauce was divine. I couldn't eat it all and will enjoy the rest of it for lunch today. Emma Jayne's menu has something for everyone. Our server, Drew, was informative and attentive. While we may make other food choices (skip the calamari and pretzel bun but keep the pot pie), we will definitely return.

I chose the Poke Bowl ($35) for my meal (my first ever poke bowl) with marinated raw tuna and salmon, edamame, cucumber, watermelon radish, snap peas, nori, avocado, sesame seeds, scallions, and pea tendrils, all over sushi rice with ginger gochugaru oil and soy sauce on the side. This was absolutely delicious. It was a wonderful blend of fresh flavors and textures. I guess she had a craving for Thai on a Saturday evening because she suggested trying out the Clifton Park location and it was already after 5pm. As per usual, it was brightly lit inside and there were only two other tables with customers. There was also a Mealeo driver waiting to pick up a delivery order. We were politely seated and provided with menus and glasses of water. Right away, I noticed that my wife's menu looked different from mine. Hers had white stickers covering several items. We checked with the waitress, and she confirmed our suspicion that the covered items were no longer available. She asked if I would like a different menu since nothing was covered on mine. Rather than being tempted to order something that I would later learn was not available, I agreed to having an updated menu. Initially, I thought I had received another outdated menu, but the waitress pointed out their attempt to use a magic marker on the plastic coated menu was not successful; you could still see all of the items on the menu. With all the awkward stuff out of the way, I ordered a Thai Iced Tea ($5) while we studied the menus. Maybe because I hadn't had one in a long time, it tasted extra good. Great flavor, and it was not too sweet. The Curry Puff ($9.95) appetizer caught the attention of us both, so we ordered the vegetarian version with potatoes, onions, peas, carrots, and curry powder inside a house made pastry with sweet and sour sauce and cucumber sauce on the side. They looked like little empanadas and tasted delicious, especially with some of the tamarind sauce. Unfortunately, our Curry entrées were brought to the table about a minute after the Curry Puffs. Fortunately, we were able to quickly devour the three puffs before our entrées had a chance to cool. My wife's Green Curry with tofu ($16.95) was served mild, as requested, and was quite delicious. There was just enough spice to recognize that some of it was in there. I ordered the Kabocha Pumpkin Curry with a combination of shrimp, beef, and chicken ($19.95) with medium spicing. The blend of flavors was outstanding. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, and both the beef and chicken were tender. The spicing let you know right away that it was there, but it was not overpowering. It began to fade just as you were ready for your next spoonful. Both of our curries were served with heart-shaped molds of white rice. Had we noticed that the menu also offered brown rice we would have chosen that instead of the white rice. Apparently, they do a good takeout business. During the time we were there we observed an almost constant stream of customers or delivery drivers picking up packages to go. I'm certain we will return for more good food and friendly service.

The spicy noodle dish, which we were warned was "very very hot", wasn't hot at all. Unfortunately, the restaurant has no "Chinese hot mustard" available - the waitress couldn't give an explanation as to why, so perhaps it's not considered authentic (since it's usually made with Colman's) or perhaps they just don't want it? At any rate, we were brought chili oil but the taste of adding it is completely different from the taste of an actual Sichuan spicy dish. The duck was average at best. Mapo Tofu was very spicy despite being labelled only one out of five. It was good but so salty, we only tasted a little of it. Sauteed pea shoots were excellent but again, too salty to eat. The four of us found this restaurant slightly below average to average in the food offerings. If you go, and you don't like massive amounts of sodium (even in dishes that aren't soy sauce based!), insist on low salt or no extra salt. The duck and soups were the only things that weren't ultra-salty. It's unfortunate because it's the ambience and service were excellent.
