Quick! It's 7:30pm, we're in the middle of The Blue Mountains on I84, it's dark out and we're starving! What's there to eat at the next town? Yelp brought up several good looking options in La Grande Oregon. But Side A Brewing won out mainly for convenience - they were open late (i.e.: open until 9pm in this town.) Dinner was such a pleasant surprise! Side A Brewing is located in an old converted fire station. Hence why it was a little tricky for us to find at first - it looks like a fire station! Look for the side door with the neon flame symbol on top. It's also the door to the fire museum. Once in the door we were greeted with long beautiful wooden tables and the delicious smell of good food! The decor on the walls and behind the bar is trendy but complimentary to the building's history. Old pictures, drawings and even art made from old fire hoses woven together, dot the walls. The food was excellent, came out hot and fast and was devoured quickly. Lots of beer options on tap and lots of menu items I'd love to try. Posters on the wall for upcoming live music shows. It's easy to see why this place is popular! Good stuff! My only suggestions: add a little info to the menu on the veggie burger with the smoky house sauce. I almost didn't order it because online pics looked like it was drenched in Sriracha sauce. The smoky house dressing is so much better than that and it should be celebrated! I've sponged off Yelp for over 5 years and this is the first restaurant that has compelled me to create an account and write a review. Specifically, it is the peanut butter bacon burger. I have no idea why that wasn't thought of years ago, or why I needed to be wandering through La Grande OR to find it, but God intervened today. A big shout out to Side A. 5/5 stars for sure! The food and beer were delicious and our host/server, Gardenia, was super kind and generous. I felt safe eating here during the pandemic. All seating was outdoors, all staff were wearing masks, and food was served in compostable containers to prevent staff from getting sick while washing dishes. My partner had the Mac and Cheese and they said "it was so spicy, creamy, and delicious!" I ate the house burger, which was also amazing. Also plenty of vegetarian options. Amazing! We were staying just outside of La Grande and were looking for a good place to grab a bite and a beer. When we arrived the place was hopping. The hostess was very kind and greeted us quickly. She took our name and gave us a heads up that the kitchen was a little behind (not an issue for us since we weren't in any hurry). She also said it would be a 15-30 min wait and then directed us to wait in the fire house. This was a fun little area to sit and wait for a table. Lots to look at and plenty of room to sit. Once we were seated we were quickly waited on. We both ordered a delicious beer from their tap. Our waiter was very prompt and attentive. We ordered their buffalo cauliflower and the house burger to share. DELICIOUS is the only word to explain the food. The burger was cooked to perfection and the cauliflower was Devine. read more

Great experience on our trip through La Grande. Stopped in around 2:00 on a Thursday afternoon. Seated quickly and our server, Drew? or Deven? arrived shortly afterwards. He told us the specials and I knew immediately I had to have the special. It was a chicken sandwich with maple candied bacon. OMG this was amazing. Fresh bread and greens, crunchy chicken and smothered bacon. It was so good I was beside myself. I savored every single bite. My side was Truffle fries. It had white truffle oil and parmesan. Again, amazing. Attentive server and really friendly. Made a special trip to go through La Grand on our trip home so we could eat there again but sadly it was closed until 4:00. We are staying in La Grande for a week this was the first place we hit for lunch. The service was friendly. The beer cold and refreshing, we had the Fifth Horseman, Nubian lager and There B Flowers. I'm a recent transplant to La Grande, and for the first couple of months we lived in town, I shied away from Side A, largely because (a) I'm not a big beer guy, and (b) the term 'brewpub' to me often means great beer, so-so food. That was a mistake: from our first meal -- through to last night's -- we've never had a bad dinner at Side A. It's clear that the folks who run the place want a great restaurant that has good beer and food, wine (yes!), and friendly people who work there. My friends who visit can attest to the excellence of their beers; one friend who has been passing through La Grande since they opened remarked recently at how good the beers have come in the last year or two. (Whenever I go to Portland to stay with friends, I bring a few cans of Side A brew with me as a thank-you present; they don't last.) I do dip into the beer side from time to time (I love the Oregon Fog), but we really appreciate the fact that they don't treat wine as an afterthought. There aren't a lot of choices -- usually 4 reds and 4 whites -- but they're thoughtfully chosen and almost always good. They also rotate them (along with a cider) on a regular basis, which is a nice touch. For my wife and me, Side A's biggest strength is the menu. It's not super deep, but they use fresh local ingredients (when possible) and grass-fed beef from a local ranch. Since we're grain-free, we tend to stick to the burgers, glazed pork belly (!!) and the like (I'd love to try their mac and cheese, but I think it would kill me, happily), and they're always prepared as we request, which is a rarity anywhere. Their chimichurri steak is unbelievable, reasonably priced and always delicious. The Bibimbop (sp?) bowl is also good, and the Kale Caesar salad is delicious (minus the bread crumbs on top for us). They also make really good soups, and folks we've gone with have loved the tacos, flatbreads, and other appetizers that we don't eat. As I said, I've never had a bad meal here; there clearly is a great chef in charge on the menu, one who has trained the rest of the staff on how to prepare great food in a consistent manner. Lastly, the staff, from the bartenders to the waitstaff to the kitchen folks, are as good as everything else. At times, Side A gets really busy, but it's rare that we wait forever, for a table or our food. In general, it's a friendly, small-town type of place with good service. If I had anything negative to say, it would be that it can get kind of loud when it's full, but it's not overpowering. All in all, it's a great place in a rural area. read more

We recently stopped here on our way home to Seattle from Idaho it was a good stopping point with great burgers and a cool little fire museum. My husband I enjoyed our meals he had the chicken sandwich and I had the peanut butter bacon burger. Our kids ordered off the kids menu they weren't a fan of the macaroni or grilled cheese needed more cheese and maybe not on sourdough bread, the kids burger was good though. Service was good but kitchen seemed a little slow, I imagine when they are busier it would take a long time to get your meal. Stopped here for dinner after a long day and we were greeted by a very friendly server who helps us decide what to order. I got the friend chicken sandwich. It was absolutely spectacular. Really loved the flavorful, crispy but not greasy chicken and everything else on the sandwich. The fries were probably some of the best I've ever had. My wife got the veggie burger. It was excellent and the patty had a really nice mix of veggies in it. A tad bit dry but tasted great. The only let down was the salad that was kind of wet from being washed and the dressing was not very good. Came to La Grande for a horse show in town and had some time for dinner. We got in around 5:30pm on a Friday and were seated right away, by 630 it was backed up in the waiting area. My mother and I tried a few beers but decided on the wheat beer. It was really good! She had the grilled cheese with tomato with bacon, she really loved it. It was garlicky toasted goodness. I had the House burger, Giant patty and OMG the gouda was amazing! The bacon was thick cut and just perfect on it. We both had the fries as a side. They were home made and thin cut. Very tasty! Side A is always a great choice when we come to La Grande to visit family. Their beer is delicious and Side A has a special meaning too. On the most recent visit I had the Bi Bim Bap bowl and am so glad I did. The veggies were so fresh and the smoked pork was amazing combined with the drizzle of sauce on top. Loved this place. We decided to stop by during my brother's graduation at Eastern Oregon University (who wants to sit in the sun all day watching graduation?) My dad and I sat outside and had a few beers waiting for my brother and mom. I had the oatmeal stout and the lager, both tasted sort of hoppy but enjoyable. The outside seating is cute but sort of in the back alley and you smell the dumpsters a bit. The food here is what really stood out. We ordered the Korean pork tacos, pork belly blt, fried chicken sandwich, and the sausages. I got the dirty fries with my pork belly BLT. I definitely suggest getting the dirty fries, they have an aioli and peppers on them. The BLT was interesting.. I missed the crispness of a regular BLT but the pork belly was thicker and heartier. I tried the fried chicken sandwich as well, great sauce and super thick chicken pieces. I loved the Korean pork tacos. They had a bright pink sauce on them but it was pleasantly spicy and I especially liked the pickled vegetables. Even though this place was a little difficult to find because of the signage, I'm glad we found it. It was a perfect lunch on a sunny day in La Grande! read more
