This place is great! An old school diner. I dunno where the smokehouse name came from. There's no epic BBQ here that I'm aware of. But the breakfasts are nothing short of outstanding. The waitress is very old school. You couldn't ask for better. Coffee cup never got lower than half full and she was johnny on the spot filling it. Very cheerful but a whirling dervish taking care of every customer in the place all by her lonesome. When I was ready to head out she noticed that I had a water bottle and asked if I wanted it filled with ice water. This pretty much guaranteed a serious gratuity for her. What a great gal and what a great way to start your day. Oh... the food was great too. Big breakfast for not a lot of dough. The sign says they open at 7 but the place has a lot of patrons there by 06:00. I inquired about this and she said that if they put 6:00 as their opening time, the townies would show up at 05:00. If I could give the Smokehouse zero stars, I definitely would. Biscuits and gravy are a complete embarrassment. Whatever they call a biscuit is nowhere near it. The gravy is obviously canned and just plain crap. Then there was the coffee for $3.25....uhh what? and it was weak as 3 fingers of water. Oh and the extra $3 for hash browns that were supposed to come with the ham and eggs. Said so on the menu but not how it turned up on the check. I have eaten at this restaurant many times 25 to 30 years ago and it was always great so I stopped in. Avoid this disaster even if you are starving. read more

THIS IS NOT A BBQ JOINT. We didn't figure out that it was a general cafe until we were seated, and by then we were committed. That said, it was good. We had a BLT, Crepes, French Toast and the "light breakfast". My daughter wished the crepes had berries inside of them and not just a small portion on top, but otherwise we were all please with the food. The bacon was the highlight, GET THE BACON! read more

Overall, this was a great breakfast. We got a nice table in the back, so it was easy to talk. The food was all really good. The cinnamon roll was in an odd spot on the menu, so I'm glad I saw it. It was soft and gooey. Maybe a little too much frosting, but it was fantastic. My major beef is that the coffee cups are thimbles. The server did a great job of keeping them filled, but you could empty one in two sips. Thank you for a great meal to start the day! read more

Flew in for the week from Tulsa, Oklahoma to be with my girlfriend and she showed me this place one cold rainy morning. We were both greeted with smiles and made to feel comfortable immediately. After sitting down I was recommended the country stack by a phenomenal waitress whose name I do not remember unfortunately and my girlfriend got the crepes. Our coffees were never left more than half way before getting a refill which is awesome! Once we got our food I must say that it was absolutely delicious. Not a crumb was left behind. If I ever was to live in this small cute little city I would definitely frequent this place daily as it was hands down some of best tasting breakfast I've had in quite some time. read more

I would say this is a hidden gem but it's not hidden in fact it's on the main drag. When you read the name one would think smoke house they'll have smoked meats, right! Well they don't but what this place has is great waitresses staff and a cook who knows how to layout some top of the line breakfast's. Not many places now a days have hand shredded hash browns from potatoes cooked the day beforehand an cooled for the next days hash browns nor do many places offer sausage gravy made like granny either. I had their taco omelette with coffee. I couldn't get a picture of my wife's breakfast cuz she was in it before I could get a picture so here's mine. I asked to add jalapeño no problem with no extra charges like in most other places. La Grande, Oregon has really friendly people it's a ranchers town so if you're one of those Greenies who think cattle are necessary then pass on through! If you're offended with that well build a bridge and get over it! Eat beef you'll be glad you did. We stopped here almost a year ago, and had a great experience. Service was fast and friendly, and the food was great. We really enjoyed it! This year was not so good. The food was just as good, but service was slow and unfriendly. My coffee cup was empty for at least ten minutes. My waitress looked like she had just swallowed a sour prune.(No friendly smile, no friendly hello). My breakfast came 45 minutes after I ordered. It was cold. Nobody seemed to care. Just had breakfast here. Not from the area but have eaten here before, every few years when in the area on business. Very good. Had eggs cooked perfectly with no lacing, hash browns, toast and awesome bacon. Wife French toast, bacon and eggs. Excellent. - Very good service. The only thing that is important to me that they did not do great was coffee. Tasted weak to my taste. Only reason could not give 5-star... Filtered water! A lot of places in town don't and it makes a huge difference in taste in everything from the soups to the sodas when there's no overpowering chlorine flavor that the local water has. This is our new go-to for La Grande. We've gone here 3 times so far and it hasn't disappointed us yet. Prices are decent and the food is good. Very friendly staff, they have little odds and ends for sale that gives the place a little bit of the country store vibe. My one and only gripe is they close around 3 pm and don't do dinners, so sometimes when I'm in town shopping for stuff I forget I need to stop by earlier and miss out. We live about halfway between Baker City and La Grande and Inland Cafe in Baker City used to be our go-to place, but the food here is better. Now we shop in La Grande because we get a chance to eat here. read more

So's my pally and I stop in La Grande to chew a little something on a Sunday, just before all the church goers fill up all the joints. Sunday breakfast mm mm. He wants to get a bite in town as he knows I usually prefer the Flying J Truck Stop outside of town a bit, cause they know how to fix good food. And you never wait very long there to get it either. But you'se know how that goes, your buddy wants this, you want that, it's a compromise sometimes. Damn shame politicians can't do that. So, I says to him, I can't speak well of this joint, last time I went in there was years ago, I ordered Eggs Benedict, it was terrible, burnt, pathetic sauce, dog food as far as I'm concerned. He says, that was then, this isn't let's try it. Being as Eggs Benedict was way too hard for em' last time, I order an omelette. I mean, how can a restaurant worth a Tinker's damn screw that up right? I asks for just the omelette, no hashbrowns, no pancakes, nothing to make it more complicated for them. The server brings my "omelette" which isn't particularly great to look at on the plate. But after all, this isn't the Hotel Roosevelt is it. The server is behind the eight ball, they didn't do the cook'in or the presentation. The service was great. Well ok, credit where it's due, the coffee wasn't bad, wasn't special, but wasn't bad. I drank it. I stick a fork in this "omelette", it bleeds runny egg and liquid all over the plate. That was as far as I got with it. I called the server over instead of using the plate as a frisbie and send'in it back myself and said, "I'm not eat'in this. Don't bother trying to cook anything else for me just take this away". The server came back and told me the cook said next time they'd try to do better. Well, anything would be a step up wouldn't it? If you have to "try" to scramble an egg and get it done, imagine what a hamburger would be like, or dinner meal. Ewwwwwwwww They removed the charge for the runny egg mess from the ticket, what else could they do? I certainly wasn't going to part with my hard earned cabbage to pay for raw eggs. I could have bought a dozen eggs, cracked some in a cup and given em a stir myself if I wanted raw eggs for way less mazuma. I'm not a raw egg kind of palooka. I don't like most anything not pretty well done. That's how my mama raised me and it took. So's it's years later, I don't usually give anyone or anything a second chance without a good reason and this is the why of it. Once bitten twice shy baby. It'd be like going in the Fort George Brewery in Astoria OR next time I'm over on the coast and thinking you could get a decent glass of lager. Or good service. It probably ain't gonna happen. So why would you go a second time right? I guess I'm just kindhearted. No wait, that can't be it. Lots of these flimflam restaurants hire cats to cook for them who aren't smart enough to come in out of the rain. You'se know what I mean. Menu was posed by another yelper and is still up to date as end of July 2015. I had sausage patty with poached eggs was medium but did the trick. It's hard to get breakfast wrong... but they accomplished that for sure. Flapjack sandwich was literally two pancakes with one small egg and two pieces of bacon ON TOP OF BOTH PANCAKES. French Toast had no flavor, and it was egg soggy and cold. $35 for a breakfast we didn't eat. The one hair in a pancake and the flies on the table were a bit much and I had to wait in the car. read more
