To say that the owner and staff went above and beyond is an understatement. Not only did they have all the parts I was looking for but knowing that I was from out of town and just passing through they installed them on the spot and worked together to have my bike ready to go in no time. I purchased a carbon fiber wheelset, rotors, tires and tubes, 2 cassettes, chain, and pedals. They even switched out the cassette off my old wheels. Since I rode my bike 15 miles (from Tulare) to the shop it would have been difficult to ride back carrying my old wheelset so the owner offered to give me a ride back!! Now that is above and beyond service not to mention just a cool group of guys. I wish I could take this shop with me back to Pennsylvania. Thank you guys very much!! read more

Disclaimer: My reviews are not to demonize any establishment or to argue with any owner. It is merely to tell my experience. My loyalty lies with those who haven't visited these businesses, to either promote or shed some needed light on shadiness. Let's begin with the POSITIVES. SBW ( Sierra Bicycle Werks ) is one of the few bicycle shops in the Visalia area. By the location and atmosphere alone this establishment is very inviting. +1 Did I receive any energy of being prejudice or racial tension- nope. Not at all. Very friendly +1 Oh and there is a plus! They do give military discount. I brought my bikes into SBW and a associate helped me out and gave me an estimate. Now the estimate is printed on a receipt. That estimate can go left or right in price depending on the work that's being done. (Just a disclaimer) NOW TO THE NEGATIVES ... The gentleman told me that he spoke with me over the phone about it - but I was sad to report that we never spoke over the phone and that he spoke with my partner who I asked later about this claim. My partner informed me that they never spoke about military rates. And believe me people as frugal as WE are - deals are always sought after. Hey listen - if you don't ask you will never know. Anyway the woman with the awesome 2 tones Bob told me to mention that I am military upon checking out and I will get my percentage off. Well that didn't go as planned. The young gentleman that completed my transaction the first time and assisted with completing my transaction the second time informed me that military discounts ARE ONLY FOR PARTS ---- NOT SERVICE. Was I disappointed? Of course. Very. But hey some savings is better than none. I also felt a small inkling that he was a little disgruntled that I was asking him about what the other associate told me. His demeanor and his facial expressions shifted slightly. Moving forward. Whatever deals and sales they have - I believe all the employees should be on the same page and understand the specifics of those deals and sales b/c it's not fair to the customer or the customer's fault if we are going by what we were told. Did I end up paying MORE than the quoted price? Omg yes.. and here's my complaint with that. If you are to change the price where it costs the customer more b/c a part is needed I personally and professionally feel that you should inform the customer before you decide to make that move. Just going ahead and performing a service and then charge me without me knowing that you are going to do more.. eh.. not cool with me. What if I hit a financial hardship and wasn't able to pay that extra money? Things like this happen. Pro activity isn't always the best activity when communication is not apart of the solution. Now the call I received was to tell me that the brakes wouldn't stop squeaking and that they tried to fix it but they couldn't and that they were sorry. Butttt the same young gentleman that checked me out with my first bike failed to mention that they ordered new brake pads for me in which I had to pay for, which was the surprise that I found out later.. increasing my price for my final bill. Not cool. Clear and precise communication seems to be an issue and I don't like being or feeling locked into paying something b/c someone was being an overachiever. CONCLUSION Does the bike work? +1 Hell it better for the amount of extra money I spent. Ha ha. Yes both of the bikes work exceptionally better- and SBW did a great job. SBW is full of smiles and greeting but they do have a couple of kinks to work out. You can not please everyone but you can work on preventing displeasing more than one. #damagecontrol #prevention #communication Would I recommend SBW? Si (yes) But ask questions! Get clarity on what you have to pay, anddd if they are to upgrade anything on your bike make sure to inform them to call you prior to them ordering any new parts that you haven't discussed to be ok. You don't want to walk out with a $100 estimate just to return to a $200 bill. No one likes those types of surprises. read more

Overpriced and worst customer service. I took my bike looking to repair the rear tire. They told me that I didn't need a tune up but they charged me a lot of money for "other repairs" different people help me and gave me different estimates. when they returned my bike, the problem in the rear tire still the same and the brakes work the same, they only charged me 200 for nothing. read more

Went to this business looking for upgraded seats for our new e-bikes. For a smaller shop they carried a good selection of accessories at what I felt was a very competitive price. The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They explained the differences in the seat types and recommended a seat that would help with some of the issues my wife was experiencing. The folks at Sierra Bicycle Werks have come through for me 3 times in a little over a year, and it's about time for me to drop a note here about it. Back in April, 2020, when my job changed to WFH, I was able to make some lemonade out of the lemons and start getting in a lot more mountain biking at my favorite location. Now, there's one thing I've always said about mountain biking: if you like bike maintenance, you'll love mountain biking. And my trusty 2012 Trek Lush SL ("Surprise") was going to need some suspension maintenance sooner rather than later, and I didn't want to miss a chance for a ride because my bike was in the shop. So I realized I wanted a second bike that I could trade off with Surprise. There was a real run on bikes at the time (and there still is!), but Christian and Drew and SBW helped me find just the right bike. There weren't many left in the US (2020 Fuel EX 9.8, Small, 27.5" wheels), but they got one, and I had it just a couple weeks later. What a revelation! (Named it Conway, after the great mathematician JH Conway who had sadly died not long before of COVID-19.) Fast forward to the fall, and my (adult) son who lives in the Bay Area was ready to do some mountain biking--there are a couple of county parks with some pretty nice MTB trails within biking distance of home for him. But he needed a mountain bike! (His hybrid commuter just wasn't going to cut it.) I'm the kind of mom who can't resist buying a mountain bike for one of my kids (even now they're not kids anymore). He's in the Bay Area, so I first tried some bike shops there, but I couldn't get any of them to even talk to me on the phone. Sheesh! This isn't the kind of thing that works well over email. And part of the reason I can buy mountain bikes is because when I'm not mountain biking, I'm working pretty hard at my day job--I don't have a heck of a lot of time for shopping. I really need a shop that has the time for a phone conversation. At first I was like, what am I gonna do? And then I realized that my son, at 5'11", wouldn't really be a problem to size. And certainly Christian at SBW had talked to me on the phone before. So, yep, ordered his 2021 Trek Top Fuel 9.7 (I wanted to get him a bike that would help him LOVE mountain biking) through SBW. This time it took a bit longer, and there were a couple of delays (on Trek's side), but SBW was great about keeping me posted, so I didn't fret. Delivered in March, it's the perfect bike for the riding he's doing, and he's loving it. Now, remember what I said about bike maintenance up at the top? Ever since I'd got Conway, I been riding it (my A bike) 3x per week and Surprise (my B bike) once a week. That means some regular suspension service (other things like brake and drivetrain maintenance I take care of myself). I haven't been using SBW for service in the past--it's a half hour drive from where I live, and since they have to ship out the suspension parts anyway, I've always just shipped them out myself. And the tech I've been sending them to for the past ten years has been quite reliable, always getting the parts back to me within 3 weeks, usually 2, and occasionally in just 1 week. So I sure didn't expect when I shipped Conway's fork and shock to him for regular maintenance not long before Memorial Day, that they would still not be finished (but that's a whole nother story). And not only that, but 3 weeks into riding only Surprise (and already realizing there were delays ahead for Conway) Surprise's shock blew up. Well I wasn't about to send Surprise's suspension off into the black hole with Conway's, and I was like--what the heck, bring Surprise to SBW, and not only get its suspension fixed up, but have them do a bunch of other maintenance and install a dropper post too. There were a few delays for parts (of course--that's just the way it is these days), but yesterday I picked up Surprise from them, and this morning I had a great (EARLY so I could get home before it hit 100°) ride and it's riding like new! Jacob (and another mechanic, whose name I neglected to get) did a great job. I couldn't be happier. The past few weeks I've been riding my 20-yr-old hardtail, and getting back on Surprise all fixed up--well! it's not the same as Conway, but it's still pretty great, and I'm so happy about it that I had to call them on the phone to say thanks. And then I thought--I never write yelp reviews, but I really owe them one. I want them to get all the customers they need to stay in business so they're there for me when I need them. So yeah, if you want to buy a bike or get a bike serviced, they'll take care of you. And you don't have to buy a ton of fancy bikes like I do to get good service, either. I totally have watched them provide the same care and attention to all their customers. read more

I came in, got fitted for a bike and walked out a happy customer. We just purchased two Townies from SBW. Did a lot of research over the last few months. Wanted to buy local. Bought a used Giant Sedona to play with while trying to decide what to do. Went in to buy brake pads for the Sedona. A young guy helped me. He showed me the Townies. I came back with my wife to show her the Townies. We got hooked up with Christian and the rest is history. Ended up with two Townies. Great customer service. Loads of knowledge and low pressure sales. We pick up one of the bikes in a couple of days. Wonder what else we'll leave with. Sierra Bicycle Werks has been nothing but absolutely great to me. I've been going to this bike shop for 2 years now and have had no problems. The employees I've interacted with have been all be outstanding. Christian has especially been super helpful and has answered my many questions. He was also able to fit me to a bike that was a little too big to me that I bought secondhand. With the adjustments he made to the headset and seat, my Trek Emonda fits me perfectly. What can I say! They saved Christmas . Due to my hectic work schedule ( and procrastination) I set out looking for a bike for my 8 year old at 3pm Christmas Eve. I had just got off work after a long day. The owner and staff are a friendly group and they stock a LOT of parts and accessories as well as bikes from Trek and Cannondale (primarily, there are a few other boutique brands in there as well). If I had one complaint, it's that being downtown, it can be difficult to find a parking spot during peak hours. I just bought my son a bike and helmet for his birthday, and can't say enough about the service that we received. As long as we live locally, this will be our shop. read more

I wish I could give it NO stars. The parking is beyond dismal; imagine even *thinking* (I can't) about loading/unloading a bike on the street for servicing. Then NO rear parking when there's all kinds of empty space back there. As if that weren't enough, the only "seating" space they have inside is ONE TINY, LOW armless "bench" designed for a *toddler,* lol--nothing for an adult, much less a senior. They clearly cater to the elite event crowd and overindulged teenagers. So relieved to never go back there again! read more

Went to see if they could fix or replace a rear wheel for my sons bike and find some brake pads, Keith helped us right away with solutions to fix it, and he was very helpful, friendly and not pushy. As we were there we noticed that their bikes were very reasonably priced, and instead of putting money fixing the old bike, we decided to put it towards the purchase of a new bike. Keith let my son try the bike out and ride it to see if he liked it, then got it ready once my son picked the bike he wanted. I was genuinely amazed by the level of customer service and professionalism at this bike shop, Keith and the other employees were friendly and I appreciated that he explained everything and wasn't pushy at all. Great little bike shop in the heart of downtown. I'm riding back to the bay area after coming from NYC and i have stopped in here a couple of times in the last week to grab a few things for my journey, though this isn't the biggest of bike shops after coming in a few days after explaining to the gentleman in the shop that I was looking for a specific tire- to my surprise i walk back in no more than a week later and the exact tire is shelved without me even asking. I go in today and get the lube for my chain that I am needing. Needless to say this is a more than adequate bike shop for every need. if they don't have it, they can get it. The staff is extremely friendly and energetic and, although they can get overwhelmed at times, are very eager to provide great service and sound advice. I absolutely LOVE this place!! I got into cycling earlier this year and commute daily and they've been my go-to spot for everything since I found out about them (I only wish I knew about them before I bought my bike with a ton of accesories from Sport Chalet). One of their employees, Sam, talked me in to getting some new 28s for my bike and they make for a very comfortable ride, Fonz got me a rear light that works great, Rudy helped me with a fitting and Craig gave me great insight on some clipless pedals. Overall, the entire staff here is very knowledgeable, friendly and they've definitely got themselves a lifetime customer. I really, really wanted to make this place my new local bike shop. I like supporting small businesses and after reading their story on their website, I felt good about choosing this shop to purchase a new bike. I went online, did my research, and narrowed my selection down to 3 Cannondale bikes that I really liked and were available in the color I really wanted, black. All I needed was a little expert advice to help me weigh the pros and cons of each. I went down to the shop, patiently waited outside due to social distancing restrictions, and finally met Christian. Christian was very nice and very helpful. After talking to Christian, I decided on the Cannondale Treadwell 3. Christian told me a black Treadwell 3 was on its way to the shop and would be available in a few days for me to test ride. Excited as I was, I told Christian that I work nights and asked him to please hold the bike for me if I didn't answer my phone when he called. I was worried because during my online research, I realized bikes were quickly selling out as a result of the worldwide pandemic and I had already missed out on buying a different bike online. Christian and I had a short conversation about the current lack of bikes available due to the pandemic and assured me he would hold the bike for me until I got a chance to test it out. I told him I was ready to buy and just wanted to give it a test ride first. I left the shop excited and anxious to ride the Treadwell. The very next day I get a voicemail message from Christian that the black Treadwell had arrived, was assembled, and was ready for me to come down and test ride. The voicemail message was time stamped 10:45am and it was now 4:48pm (I was asleep during the day because I work nights). I happily returned Christian's call to set a time for me to go to the shop and ride the Treadwell, knowing that the shop would close at 5 and I most likely wouldn't get the chance to go down there that day. Christian was busy with another customer, so I left a message for him. Christian returned my call just after 5 pm and told me I could go test ride the bike on Monday (shop closed on Sunday). I thanked him and just to be sure, reiterated that it was specifically the BLACK Treadwell that I would be riding. Christian then told me, with hesitation in his voice, that he had sold the black Treadwell earlier in the day and only had a maroon Treadwell for me to test ride. My heart sunk. I asked Christian why he had sold the black Treadwell and he brushed away my concern saying he could order another and it would arrive in about a week. All of this AFTER we had our conversation about the lack of available bikes and delays with shipments coming from China. I was deeply disappointed by Christian. I did my best to express my sincere desire to purchase the black Treadwell and believed Christian when he told me he understood my concerns and would hold the bike for me. The whole incident left me unable to trust Christian, as he had broken his word to me, and unwilling to do business with this bike shop in a town that only has 2. I really wish Christian had been a man of his word and told the new customer that the black Treadwell was on hold for another customer but he could order another for them if they were interested, instead of selling it out from underneath me after saying he would hold it for me. Christian could have sold 2 bikes and kept his word to me. read more

Initially I was going to buy a MTB through Motobecane after asking for some input at forum I frequent, but decided to come to Sierra Bicycle Werks in order to see what they had and to go discuss what I had been told on the forum. The guy I spoke to is named Christian. Christian is very knowledgeable and did a great job addressing the pros and cons of going through Motobecane, or any online retailer. He also did a great job discussing the quality of various manufacturers components, frame quality differences between brand-name and on-line retailers and in discussing what size frame would be best for me. Im a very inquisitive person and ask a ton of questions in order to ensure that I am getting my money's worth. After speaking to Christian and his objective, no BS info, I settled on buying a Trek from him. Not only did I a get a quality MTB, but I am also supporting a local business.
