Last night had the most extraordinary meal, divine, scrumptious @ Sierra Chef monthly dinner. I am a foodie and this was world class food.

I love to support locals and the setting for Sierra Chef brunch and dinners is lovely. But I have yet to have my meal hot. Italian dinner at $65 was fun but heard from at least three others that food was cold and veal was tough. It was a lovely evening and I enjoyed the company and location. Unless this gets resolved, won't be back. I probably would get their nightly takeout dinners for $20 and heat at home. I know the food is good, just needs to be the right temp. read more

Since losing my husband (who was the cook in our family) I've relied on Sierra Chef for providing meals for our family holiday gatherings. Never a disappointment and the pricing and portions have always been great. If you're ever in Genoa, you have to stop in their shop. They have so many awesome eats and the staff has always taken great care of me, and I've loved their recommendations. They have great hostess gifts too. I know I appreciated the gift certificates I've received for various meals. They provide a farmers market in Gardnerville that is quite popular. They support so many events and organizations within our small community. And of course, they're located by some other great locations... such as Nevada's oldest thirst parlor, Genoa Bar, which is an experience of its own. I highly recommend them. We walked in, super excited. The workers ignored us even when we were standing at the pay counter with products to buy. New customers walked in and they said hi to them and started helping them. I'd like to think this wasn't racially motivated but we weren't the same race as the person behind the counter and when that person started helping the customer behind us and they were the same race it kind of makes me think it was about race. I will never go to this establishment again and I will tell as many people about it as I can. I really hope this was just a fluke because it was a real bummer. read more

Sierra chef is such a gem of Genoa and I'm so grateful to be able to get a homemade dinner right around the corner. Some of our family favorites are the mushroom ravioli with Aunt Nellie's Marinara, Lasagna, homemade sausage and a cannoli or whatever fun dessert they're serving that day. I was excited to see this place. I never knew this place existed. I am Italian from the east coast so I am always looking for some good authentic Italian food. Having been a chef for years in an Italian restaurant and having my own personal family recipe that has been past down from generation to generation of a Sunday gravy my expectations are high. This place failed so badly. It hurts me to say this because I am always in support of small businesses. However, it makes me mad when I pay 35+ for food I can not even eat. I didn't get to go in the store and please keep in mind this review is only for the food I purchased. Let's start with what I was told is their "signature sauce" it's their marinara sauce. Marinara sauce should be light and vibrant showcasing the freshness of the tomatoes with the sauce. Theirs was nothing like that it simply was horrible. My husband and I couldn't even eat it. It was heavy and dark. It had an overpowering taste I couldn't really put my finger on. The best way I could describe it is anise flavoring. It tasted like someone dumped a bottle of anise (the flavoring you would get from black licorice) flavoring in it. Along with cinnamon and it had a sweet taste as well, almost like sundried tomatoes. I have never in my years tasted a marinara sauce like this(this wasn't a good thing). I have yet to go to Italy but I dare say having eaten at the best Italian restaurants in New York, Jersey and from family members who are from Itay this sauce Sierra Chef serves wasn't good marinara sauce. I kept saying to my husband if they were hired to serve this at my wedding I would have been extremely upset. The cheese ravioli was decent but overpriced for the 12 dollars you're charged for 8 pieces. Next, we have the "fresh garlic parmesan bread braid" It wasn't fully cooked it was disgustingly doughy in the middle. So it was a waste of money. Uncooked. The taste was just ok. They use dried garlic seasoning on top with powdered parm and I believe paprika. So the taste was nothing special and I couldn't even eat it because the middle of the whole loaf was doughy raw. On to the cannoli. Straight disappointment here. The filling is way too liquidity so it ran all over the place it also tasted like garlic. So I am not sure if the reason the filling tasted like garlic was because how they stored it at the store or if it was because the person who packed my food put the cannoli in right next to the hot loaf of garlic bread. The cannoli shell was burnt. So yeah all of it was gross. The last thing was the coffee. Carmel Macchiato nothing to write home about. Tasted like something I would get from Starbucks and it wasn't even that hot. This place could have been an exciting gem tucked away from the craziness but it was just extremely disappointing. read more

I was excited to see a bakery and pleasantly surprised to see they had espresso in this small town. They had empty cannoli shells ready for filling. I ordered a small one and glad I did. The coffee, even though I ordered and extra shot, was weaker than anticipated from Italian bakery. I also expected more from the cannoli. The shell had an old taste letting me know it had sat in the freezer a couple of days. The filling was okay. I did appreciated the mini chocolate chips and the ground pistachios. I did not try any of the other baked goods. The small store had a lot of Italian cooking and baking supplies that appeal to the impulse shopper. Would I stop in again? Probably not knowing I can get stronger and less pricey coffee in Carson City or Minden/Gardnerville but if you are in town for the touristy events, it will do. read more

Fun event to do while on vacation. Highly recommend adding this cooking class to your vacation agenda. We did the Ravioli class - learned a ton while having fun! As it was a Tuesday event they not only catered the event, they provided dinner the night before as it was a destination wedding and we all came from afar. Cynthia and her crew were so kind and helpful. They decorated the tables and provided a truly enjoyable afternoon. It was perfect. My husband gave me a surprise birthday party catered by Sierra Chef! What a wonderful present and I couldn't have been more impressed by Cynthia and her team. The food was delicious; we had a sit down dinner for 12 and everything went off so smoothly, I didn't have to worry about a thing.
