If I could give this company a 10 I would. We ordered Bark for our front yard to replenish after the bad winter we had. After measuring our yard we were sure about the amount we wanted and the bark choice. BOY we're we wrong. They came to deliver the bark and the driver said we had ordered too much and the wrong style. He was great about helping us with the correct amount and the bark we should use. I am very happy with my delivery of shredded cedar. The whole process- beginning from ordering over the phone with Rudy to the delivery today was hassle free and with friendly and helpful people. The delivery truck driver arrived exactly within the time frame Rudy gave over the phone which was a relief because I have had poor experiences with other places when it came to delivery times. I asked the delivery guy to please dump as much of the bark as possible onto this sheet of plastic I had laid out in advance. DO NOT BUY GARDEN "SOIL" HERE! I had 10 yards of their "Organic" Gardeners Blend and it was littered with trash. Actual trash. Thousands of pieces of plastic and glass. This stuff belongs in a LANDFILL NOT AN ORGANIC GARDEN! It was particularly heart breaking because we had built a ton of raised beds at our new house and were excited to start an organic garden. Spring came, the weather was great and the soil was the last step before planting! Unfortunately, literally every time you put your hands in the soil you found trash. High prices, doubled in a year. So-so service. Have been buying pre-bagged top soil there for years. Today when my husband drove around after paying, the bags were only half full (.5 cubic foot compared to 1 cubic foot we've always gotten in the past). $7 a bag. Less than a year ago paid $6.50 for a full bag. Bags are more expensive than in buck by the yard, but easier for us seniors to manage. We will definitely be shopping around and likely not go back. We've purchased other items including rock and bark in bulk from them in the past and have always been satisfied. There is a rock yard that is half the distance of Sierra Rock, but they didn't have the soil that my inner hippie was looking for. I spoke with Nick over the phone and he was really friendly and helpful. I arrived ready to weigh out some options but the obvious winner stood out. I have ordered landscape materials from Sierra Rock for a long time (30 years or so). I am a very active 'do it myself' guy when it comes to landscaping. I made my own concrete patio at my last house from raw materials. In the several dozen orders for materials from Sierra Rock I have only had one slight problem over 30 years. I ordered 'fill dirt' and it ended up with a small amount of misc. construction items like small chunks of electrical wiring. But that was no big deal. None of the other orders had any problems and were delivered on time. One tip: If you order a large amount of material you should try to negotiate a bulk discount. This really helped save $$$ one time when I ordered 30 yards of bark. read more

On two separate occasions, during their regular business hours, I show up expecting them to be open only to be met with a closed office one of the times, and the other time the entire parking lot was chained off. Again I was not coming near the end of the day, it was in the middle of their business hours. My recommendation is to call ahead. The location is at least pretty good. read more

Had a question about a plant I had seen that was very attractive but I did not know the name. Explained it to the lady who worked there and she told me exactly what it was and showed me also. She also answered many questions about fruit trees. Prices a little steep for some things (IMHO) but I will pay more for service and knowledge to help me. No point having a "Guarantee" on the plants if they die because nobody at the big box store knew what they were or how to grow them.. I will be back! read more

I have only the best things to say about Sierra Rock! I have landscaped my whole backyard and also completely redid my front yard using materials from Sierra Rock. Every time I went all the employees were extremely helpful and polite. Two names that I remember are Rudy and Alan who are usually the ones in the office that helped me figure out how much of what I needed and what would be best for my project. I have been to Sierra Rock over 20 times and have never had bad service nor have heard any employees talk down or be rude to any customers. I will always go back to Sierra Rock and it's not because of their products. You can pretty much get landscaping materials anywhere these days. I will always go back for their customer service! Be aware they are not delivering amount you paid for!!! Ordered 5 yards of bark and first they delivered at wrong time. They were going to deliver at 12:30 and they delivered it at 9. I wasn;t home at time of delivery and decided to check if 5 yards was there, and loaded 3 Sq ft wheelbarrow flat each time and wrote each one of them on piece of paper as I was loading it. Got total of 39 which is 6 wheelbarrows short or 2/3 of the yard. Called in next day to complain and they were at first denying it. Talked to manager by name Rudy. I even offered them to watch my surveillance video if they want as everything is documented. At that time they said come over and we will give you half yard. I came and said not sure what happened but for sure there were no 5 yards there. He said maybe a tractor operator was snoozing at the wheel and wrote on piece of paper for them to give me half yard. I sad sorry but 2/3 are missing and he impolitely said half is more than 2/3, I gave you more. At which time another customer told him that I am right and he yelled to guy that is loading bark to give me f***ing yard and than we well be all good. In my opinion poor customer service and no need to use foul language like that. Not to mention at any time they were not apologetic. I will never shop there again. read more

I had a bad experience with another landscape company due to the delivery charge policy, so I called Sierra Rock to order two products. They have a 15% off coupon in Valpak, so I was able to use that. They delivered promptly and the driver was super accommodating. He backed into the back yard area, and split one of the products into two piles so they would each be close to their end destination. They had accidentally charged me for delivery, but when I pointed it out, the driver, Allen, told me he would take care of it. Within two hours, they called and gave me a credit. The organic compost and walk-on bark I ordered are great products. Buying from this company was a great experience and I will use them in the future. read more

I have purchased many plants from them, and had a landscaping plan made, great company lots of knowledgeable staff and I will continue to buy from them. The only negative is that many of the plants/bushes aren't very established and the root structure isn't hearty. The prices are fair but for a few dollars more I have got better plants other places. I've done business with Sierra Rock now and again for over 30 years. As a woman that does her own landscaping and design, for just my home, they have always met my needs, and materials were always on hand and just what I needed. Just recently I had my purse stolen, and in it was the receipt I needed to claim the balance of my bark order. With 20 yards purchased and 10 more to pick up it would have been a substantial loss to me if they didn't believe my story. Rudy, the yard manager believed me and wrote me a new receipt so I could pick up the balance of my materials as needed. This was a great service to me and I so appreciate this kindness. I ordered soil to be delivered for the first time and chose Sierra Rock based on a friend's recommendation. I called them up and asked for advice on what kind of soil to get and after a friendly, informative chat with a jolly gentleman, decided on the "organic mix". They delivered 3 cubic yards of soil on time and for a very fair price. Everything was great, except for one bit. The soil is full of gravel and glass. It's not like any "organic" soil I've bought before. After watering it, it hardens into a shell and it's hard for my plants to break through it or for water to sink into it again. I'd recommend going to the place and picking out the soil instead of trusting them to pick it for you. I think I got duped, but would use them again if I could be guaranteed I was getting what I ordered and not a pile of crappy dirt with garbage in it. read more

I called and the phone was answered with "Please Hold", not even a greeting. I held for almost 6 minutes and I had a couple questions. The person that helped me on the phone was friendly. When I went in, I wasn't greeted. I inquired about some items and then made my purchase. I over heard the manager saying, "This is how much it costs and if he doesn't like it, give him phone numbers to some other places." Even though that didn't happen with my purchase, that kind of attitude is not customer friendly. The price seems to be okay for a local place. More options and variety then going to the dump and getting stuff from there. When I got the delivery of my bark, there was more then just bark. There was plastic, rock, concrete and a substantial part of sand. I am not pleased that now I get to filter through the bark to pick out these items. Bought several yards of their "Garden Soil" Lots of broken glass in the stuff. As soon as something sprouts in it, its dead in about a week.Been gardening practically my whole life, never seen anything like that. Also seeds from multiple sources and all types so I know its not the seeds. Maybe good for a rock garden where ya don't want anything to grow. Cant recommend these people for gardening soil. This place is pretty darn awesome! I am a frequenter of many local Nurseries because I LOVE plants. I like to go to Windmill (Carmichael), Bushnells (Granite Bay), Capital (Citrus Heights) and Exotic Plants (Sacramento) also. Those are my favorites... although I'm also the occasional Mom & Pop hardware store plant shopper too... so I know quite a bit about the selection offered in terms of the plants I am usually scouting for. But Sierra is right down the street from my work, and for my needs in my garden, or the kinds of plants I am usually purchasing, here are their strong points: They may be very small, but their selection on herbs and edibles is excellent for the size of their facility. Herbs especially. A lot of other places wont carry as much selection as Sierra which is why I love to stop there, plus they are a block away from my work on my way home. Typically, however, you wont find much in the ways of larger edible plants (fruits & vegetables)... so basically everything you will find are starter plants in 6-8" pots. The only difference between them and other nurseries is that over a longer period of time they have a larger selection of edible plant varieties than other nurseries, who seem to only offer matured or fruiting plants in the season where it is prime to plant them and are very costly. I would probably assume it is good to shop here if you have the patience to start a garden and allow more than one season for less fast-growing edible plants to produce a harvest. They usually have a pretty nice selection in terms of cacti, lots of really beautiful varieties as well, and their annual/perennial selection is just standard like what you would find at a hardware store but better quality. Up in the front during spring you'll find an excellent assortment of Coleus, one of the coolest plants to buy! And as far as the Staff goes, I have typically found them to be extremely helpful and kind. They have a lot of younger kids who run the tractors and deal with the Rock supply, but the staff is really knowledgable and friendly and make the shopping a fun experience. read more

BUYER BEWARE. This company will deliver the wrong product and will not give you what you have ordered. Based on their website, I ordered 10 yards of rock "#129 Black and White 1.5 inch." When the driver arrived with the rocks, I noticed the rocks were different. When I brought up my concern that this is not what I ordered, HE LICKED a rock and said, "See it turns darker when wet." He dumped it and left. I called the owner and told him I did not receive #129 Black and White 1.5 inch, and I have photos of what I received and he can drive by and confirm for himself. He told me to wait for rain to see the darker color, but I have already hosed the rocks and I also verified the rocks were wrong by a 3rd party landscape material company owner. He told me what I received are actually gray "DRAIN ROCKS," NOT the Black and White rocks I ordered. read more

We have bought a lot of products from them and most have been fine. But warning, do not buy their organic garden compost soil. Mine is full of glass and plastic, it also turned to cement after I had sowed my seeds and it rained. I doubt if the seeds can even come up. Very bad soil. read more
