I really enjoyed the atmosphere, ambiance, and friendly staff. I had the pumpkin curry which was great. We also had the "eggplant lovers" but were disappointed, it was more like stir fried vegetables with little eggplant, too much gravy, and it was too sweet. The pad thai, I didn't try but the comment was it was too sweet as well. I'm not sure why this was but rice wasn't included with the pumpkin curry or eggplant lovers, had to order separately. How are you supposed to eat curry without rice? Generally other Thai places its a given you get rice. read more

Tom Kai Gia soup is amazing came with my mom.. My mom's fried chicken rice was bland and the spicy mushroom stir fry was not close to spicy.. A friend recommended to come in because the decor atmosphere and overall experience was decent. The service we had made the whole dinner experience A 5 . It was busy yes but the girl Linsay helped us and that kind of kindness and service she provided we will return soon of course we will ask for her and we recommend to friends to ask for her... A friend recommended this restaurant to me and I am so glad she did. This is now my favorite place for Thai food. I ordered Green Curry... the best curry I have had at a restaurant! My friend ordered the Garlic Pork/Chicken. The seasoning was spot on! Service was courteous and very professional. Nicely decorated. If you want a dining experience that is A+ this is the place. They recently updated their menu and list the protein options with most entrees as "veggie" rather than "tofu." Although this is confusing and kind of strange, you can still get tofu as an option, along with the veggies that come with the dish. Just a heads up. read more

The panang curry had zucchini and peas in it - that was a first for us. Terrible! Got some food Togo and ordered wide egg noodles (chow fun I think) it was swimming in sauce that seemed like just straight soy and the veggies were mushy.and it tasted like plastic. The only saving grace was the spring rolls. I have had better but compared to my noodles it was fab! Nice sweet cinnamon dipping sauce that caught me off gaurd but it was surprisingly tasty. Oh and I had the mango with sticky rice with coconut sauce. That's always good and it was a good size portion. I have just moved to Tacoma and am looking for a good Thai place. I've given this place 3 chances, and it has failed all three times. The first time I tried the pad thai. I'm used to pad thai having green onions, egg bits, etc in it. Here they just give you plain noodles that are flavored...nothing else in it. The flavor isn't great even. The second time I had drunken noodles. It was super watery and had a fishy taste despite I ordered it with chicken. The third time I ordered garlic chicken with vegetables. It says it comes with "mixed vegetables", but there was only broccoli with it. The sauce was the consistency of water. I've eaten at probably close to 20 different Thai places around the Seattle area, and have never had a complaint about a single one, except this one. read more

Ok so last night (30 Dec) 8 friends and I decided to have our monthly Dining Out at Silk Thai in Tacoma. My wife and I have eaten here several times before over the years and the food and service has always been excellent. BUT Last night was Definitely a totally different scenario. The food was excellent, as always BUT the service was horrible. They took our order brought our food and after that, the 10 of us somehow became invisible. We noticed how they refreshed everyone else around drinks. But never even brought us water. Other wait staff were offering their guest a dessert menu but we got nothing. One of our friends never even got his food. I actually had to go find our waiter and let him know were missing a plate. A tip is something you earn, NOT something we owe you. So if you're disappointed in the tip you got, believe me, you got more than you deserve. read more

I was first introduced to Silk Thai when I moved to Tacoma back in August of 2017, and my life has never been the same. Tacoma wins by far when it comes to thai food! My go-to by far is the Chicken Pad Thai, basic but you really can't go wrong with a classic! They give you the option to choose your level of spice, I usually go with a 4 star (out of 5). The food comes out fast and hot, I've always had good service, and even if there's a line to wait for a table, the hostess is very attentive and provides updates on wait times. I rate my thai food on a scale of 1 to chao praya (kent, wa). This was the first place I ever had thai and it's been, by far, the best thai I've ever had. I'm also super american and pretty much only eat phad thai. Anyways, ordered some take out for myself and a friend. I work about 10 minutes away, so I made the call and she said it would be about 15 minutes. Wasted 5 minutes or so and got on my way. Upon arrival, I was told it would be about five minutes. Figured it would be a good time to read some of the reviews and I noticed a familiar issue, they say 5 minutes and it really means 15. Which is about how long I waited. It could have been ten, but it sure wasn't the five I was told. After reading a few reviews, I took a look around the place and it looked very cozy. Not your typical place, but very comfy. I've heard a bit about the main cook, her true knowledge of thai cuisine and how to "layer it". Got my food and got back to work. My phad thai was 3 star and looked pretty tasty. I'd give it a solid 8. I think the 3 star was probably a little weak, but that's how it goes. I've had 3 star at other places, multiples times and it's always different. Sometimes weak, sometimes my eyes are watering for twenty minutes. It was a nice dish and I would have it again though. Still doesn't match chao praya, but it was good enough for me. The co-worker got Tom Kah Gai and she said it was to die for. Overall, the prices are okay, probably a little more than I want to spend on take out, but meh. Food was good, people were friendly. My wife and I had been going to Silk Thai since I've lived in Tacoma (3 years) and used to like it more: 3-4 stars. We tended to order a few of the same dishes regularly and branch out from time to time. Of our core dishes, we found that the taste and quality varied from order to order and the quality seemed to decline steadily over the last several years. Pad Thai has been way too greasy and mushy and other dishes we liked seemed to have morphed into less distinct and appealing flavors. Get the pad Thai, Chang Mai noodles and Tom yum soup. Ask for the spice tray. Stay away from jasmine rice. It's a total profit center. The boar meat is nothing to write home about. Service is okay. Not terrible but nothing special. Men's bathroom is dirty. Always worries me when bathrooms are dirty. Peche beer is phenomenal. Update, 1/25/15: Demoted to 1 star. I was eating my leftovers and I found a rubber band in my pad Thai. I'm so glad that my senses are good. As soon as the rubber touched my tongue, I knew something was not right. I'm sure it was an honest mistake, but it the kind of mistake that can cause someone to die. It's one of those unforgivable mistakes. I won't be coming back. Enjoyed dinner with a friend at this Tacoma gem last week. It looks unassuming from the outside, nestled in a strip mall off 6th. When you step inside, the ambiance is awesome. Wood carvings and art, bohemian lighting, it's a really cool place. We both ordered noodle dishes that were tasty (Pad See Ew and Lahd Na). The Lahd Na was on the greasy side but had very good flavors. I really liked that the tofu that came with it was steamed and not fried. Looking forward to coming back and trying more food. read more

Some of the best Thai I've ever had. When you first walk in, the first thing you'll notice is the Indiana Jones decor.

The food is decent. I like the soups the best. The pad Thai is greasy and doesn't come with peanuts. The service is less than ideal. They have not answered the phone multiple times for carry out requests and once arriving at the restaurant I have been treated like a sit down guest and waited around while 3 families were seated and multiple orders were taken. Frustrating when I already know what I want but I had to wait 10+ minutes just to put my order in. Food is not worth the wait. The servers do not take time to acknowledge you. Have NEVER left a zero dollar tip until I came here and was treated like that. read more

In the mode for Thai and you have had the privilege of eating authentic Thai, don't come here. Don't order from here unless you can wave a wand to erase the flavors of creamy COCONUT based curries and the smell of lemon grass, basil, kafir lime and ginger Traditional Thai leaves on your palette. Our order: garlic beef, chicken panang, spring rolls, pad Thai. We always order basic first when trying an establishment for the first time. Upon ordering we were asked if we wanted the spring rolls fried? Haha? Spring rolls are fried. Spring rolls should come with lettuce, cucumber, basil, mint and a fish/peanut/chili sauce. You wrap everything up in the lettuce to eat. Summer rolls are wrapped in the "see through" rice paper. When I saw them coming I knew they weren't either one. They were a poor excuse for lumpia or some type of egg roll at best. No lettuce, no basil, no wrapping. But the sauce was there and it was sweet tasting not spicy. Thai should be spicy! We ordered everything a level 7. The curry was sweet and watered down. The garlic beef was more like beef and broccoli with a cornstarch based sauce. Absolutely no coconut cream added here. And it was sweet? Pad Thai was the best item we ordered. By no means was it great. It was edible, the flavor was almost there but overwhelmed again by something sugary sweet added. I'm a huge fan of Thai food. But not to this one. It seems their food is progressively getting worse, not to forget that people who order to take out get treated carelessly. My pad Thai 3 stars came with handful of spice and burned egg on top.(almost wanted to return this dish to claim my money back). Did it at least taste good? No, the spice was too overwhelming for me to get any flavor out of the noodle. Maybe I'm just spoiled by all the competitive Thai places around u-district. Background History: My family, friends, and I are knowledgeable about Thai's food. My family owns a Thai's restaurant and my boyfriend went to Thailand before. In other words my boyfriend would be the one that has most knowledge about Thai's food. Positive: the atmosphere was quiet and causal. We dine in around 4-5pm. The restaurant decor was amazing. They had many antique and unique items displaying around the restaurant. Con: The food was okay - moderate. We have tasted better Thai's food. We ordered chicken pad thai, beef pad see ewe, beef drunken noodles, and pineapple fried rice. The guy server that we had was nice but not very friendly. It didn't seem like he wanted to interact with us. It's not like we are expecting him to be friends with us, but at least make us feel welcome to your restaurant. There was also a lady who was cleaning our table. She kept on going back and forth to our table to clean out our dishes even though we're not even done eating our dishes. It feels like she was trying to rush us out of the restaurant. I can understand if she was doing that if the restaurant was busy, but there was no costumers except my family and friends. Overall, I would rate this restaurant a 2 out of 5 stars. I can understand if the restaurant has delicious food, but their servers are terrible. But, if the restaurant servers and food isn't that great I believe they should do something about it. Maybe, retrain their servers. I wish they put more effort into their food or costumer service as they put into their restaurant decor. read more

Something has changed here. New ownership or management? My last three visits have been disappointing, and last night was probably my last visit for a while. Our appetizer and entrees arrived at the same time. The server tried to take away my plate while I was still eating off of it. I told her that I wasn't finished, and she walked away only to return with a to go box that I hadn't asked for. The place was NOT busy, but she sure wanted us out of there. After a couple of visits (this is our average rating), we prefer other Thai restaurants in Tacoma and do not expect to come back. We have had good (4 star) experiences and terrible (1 star) experiences. Good: The food is of generally high quality. The menu is wide sampling and the seasonal specials are nice (though the Fall special menu seemed to continue throughout the winter and Spring one year). The setting was intimate and cozy. Bad: Once waited 15 minutes in the crowded and cold entryway, with several other parties, while there were MANY open tables, as the staff tended to to-go orders and neglected those customers waited to be seated. A big-turn off and we would have left except that we were with a few friends who were quite hungry and tired. Worse: I have asked each time I have ordered whether they add fish sauce to certain dishes (namely the pad thai and curry dishes). Each time I have been assured that these dishes did not contain fish sauce if requested, but upon getting these items the taste of fish sauce was blatantly apparent to me, it has a strong flavor and is not easily mistaken. Even when asking the waiter to inquire in the kitchen about ingredients they insist no fish sauce is added. I have had these dishes with, and without fish sauce, and my palate is discriminating in this sense, and they most definitely did add the fish sauce. The presentation was lovely and the food seems well cooked, but I was not able to enjoy it. Fortunately I have always been in a group setting where dishes were shared and I could sample other menu items like the Pad See Ewe, which seem to legitimately have no fish sauce added. I do not expect all restaurants to cater to my dietary restrictions, but I do expect them to be honest about what is in their food. Given that I cannot trust the waiter's (or the kitchen's) knowledge of ingredients or respect for their customer's preferences and values, I don't expect to order any item from them again. read more
