DISCLAIMER - they allowed my Companion ONLY after the song & dance below
A friend of mine stays here for an extended mental weekend - she likes to fish & this is ideal (I think) for the set that like to fish but not rough it - we decided to swing by for a few hours to visit.
I have an AmStaff Terr, Atticus, who is my companion. He will eventually be trained to full service (fingers crossed). My friend expressed a concern that they had just recently disallowed pitbulls on the property due to some attacks in the prior year.
Knowing that, by law, I'm supposed to be accommodated; I replied - no worries, let me just give them a call, let them know we're coming & I'll make sure to bring the necessary paperwork (doctor's letter, vacc reports, training cert, etc).
I should have known this was going to be an issue from the phone call - the manager, Patty, kept referring to pets/private property - I kept reiterating "companion/service animal". It was finally decided I would just show up w/all paperwork & meet said manager.
We made the drive out & I got to take a gander of the place - it's situated right off of a main hwy - pretty quick to miss &, honestly, not much to look at as you're pulling in. First is the RV parking, then what I believe is tent set up, a few cabins, bathrooms/showers. You come down the driveway into a loop that takes you right in front of the motel/store.
The motel is right on the water - you can fish from the balcony, which i love - along with a small general store of sorts.
I stopped by the room, let my friend know we were there, then headed into the store w/Atticus' papers.
I was greeted by a shorter gal with dark, curly hair (forgot her name) & asked for Patty. She asked what it was regarding, I advised I was the lady who'd called in about the companion animal that was a "pitbull". Her eyes got a little big and she went right away to get her.
Patty came out and her demeanor, right off the bat, was standoffish. I introduced myself & was greeted with "Yeah, thanks for waking me up". I was a little taken aback - I had called between 6:30 & 7 at what I thought was the business number for a stocked fishing lake motel. I found this response to be rude but held my tongue.
I set my paperwork on the counter (which wasn't even needed - she never bothered looking at it) and proceeded to get to hear her opinion on the breed of my dog, why "people chose a breed that was so obviously a controversy & bred resentment in business owners like herself" (or whatever it was she said) at this point I was appalled but still biting my tongue.. my friend likes this place and I didn't want to cause a problem for her.. "why didn't people just get retrievers" (Sorry lady.. a retriever is basically the doofus teddy bear of the dog kingdom.. a terrier is MUCH more intelligent & trainable for what I'm going to be asking this dog to do) & that EVERYBODY was always like "Well MY dog won't do that"..
I countered only a few points.. pointed out that due to unfortunate circumstances, these dogs are being blamed for irresponsible owners (a sentiment that looked like it was agreed with.. I saw the dark curly headed girl nod behind this woman) & yes, I absolutely understood her prejudice based on prior experiences.
But again.. did this apply to companion animals or service animals?
I was eventually told that I could bring him in - I had to keep him on the deck as no pets (she kept saying pets.. I kept saying companion/service animals) - & I had to not walk him on the grounds where other guests could see him.
We were only going to be there a few hours - I inwardly rolled my eyes and agreed to whatever it was she was saying. I already knew my legal grounds.
What brings the score down for this place is solely this one interaction at this point in time. The premises themselves are ok.. you get an upfront view of a lake prestocked.. off to the left is Mt. St. Helens.. it's a nice little place.. maybe a bit pricey for what it is.. but still.. lovely to just hang out, have a beer, hang with friends..
To Patty - if she reads these things - I would highly suggest getting familiar with Washington State Law and biting your lip when you're making personal comments. I have Atticus for a reason and you were triggering quite a few things. Let's just say I'm a much gentler and patient person with him.
Part of being a business owner while catering to the public is to be a steward for the disabled. I understand when you say "we told our customers we wouldn't allow" a specific breed.. be aware though that the title service/companion animal means you don't have that luxury of being so discriminating.. a service animal is held to higher standards of performance than those yapping ankle biters I saw all over the place (as an ex insurance worker, I know who bites more). plus, you could potentially be setting yourself up for legal trouble for your harassment of disabled people.
